    Book Description

"Do you want to design a wireless transmitter or receiver for hand-held telephones? Have you wondered why the printed circuit wires on high-frequency circuits dont always run in a straight line? This valuable text will answer all of your questions regarding component parasitics and circuit characterization for rf/microwave amplifier, oscillator, and filter circuit design and analysis. You will understand why capacitors act as inductors and vice versa and why amplifiers work like oscillators, while oscillators for local area networks work more like local area heaters.

Application of the information in Introduction to Microwave Circuits will reduce design-cycle time and costs, markedly increasing the probability of first-time success in printed circuit or monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) design. Several approaches are taken into consideration, such as the effects of currents on the ground plane, bypass and coupling capacitors, and nonlinear effects in linear circuits. Featured topics include:

An integrated design example of a 1.25 GHz amplifier, oscillator, and filter printed circuit is also included, which could be useful in printed circuit board designs from tens of megahertz to tens of gigahertz.

Introduction to Microwave Circuits provides the tools necessary to analyze or synthesize microwave circuits. This text is an essential reference for undergraduate students, microwave engineers, and administrators. Also, it will assist experienced designers in other fields to meet the current rapid expansion of communication system applications and work effectively in microwave circuit design.

    3 out of 5 stars Overpriced for a paperback.......2007-09-23

While the content of the book is quite good (for a beginner in RF), the fact that the book costs as much as the usual hardcover engineering textbooks, while it is only a paperback, with lower quality paper, is a big negative. This book will definitely not hold up well in your backpack throughout the course of a semester, unless if you take care of it really really well. Even if it does make it through the semester, just think how long you can use it as a reference, before the wear and tear destroys the book (in particular, the corners will start bending, then creases will appear, then the binding will become loose, then the cover will fall off, then pages will start ripping and falling out). For those who will sell their old textbooks, I don't think used paperback textbooks depreciate as well as the more durable hardcover ones. Though, if you're stuck, and the class requires it, then you'll have to be a sucker and cough up the money, of course. The content is pretty good, though. It does a pretty good job teaching dumm people like us about RF design (in particular, it briefly explains the hard stuff [emag], and then shows how easier stuff was derived from that in order to simplify RF design, then it goes on to show how to use the easy stuff [Smith Chart], and that is as far as I am right now in class). If feeling cheap, though, then I think other versions.... are a better deal in this case than this "US Version" textbook.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Introductory Book.......2004-11-05

This is a solid book for fundamental understanding of RF circuit design and the implications of distributed theory. M-files are very useful for personal calculations in homebrew designs. Book is built around a fundamental understanding of material presented by Ulaby in his book Fundamentals of Applied Electromagnetics. I would recommend both books for anyone trying to understand how to design RF circuits. I also recommend this combination of sources due to the fact the Prof. Ludwig presented the material in this fasion in his RF design classes at Worcester Polytech, in good old Atwater-Kent... Errors may be present in some of his examples, but many high level textbooks contain errors especially in early editions; my class pointed out many as we were the first group to be taught from the book and hopefully they will be corrected in a later edition. The man certainly knows what he is talking about especially when it comes to MRI field coil design. This book will assume you are familiar with complex numbers, basic EM wave propagation, and will make heavy use of matrix oriented math. MatLAB is a must, but included m-files will aid significantly in plotting Smith Charts and ultimately in matching network design. Only 4 stars because I feel this book needs to be teamed up with Ulaby's book to be complete if your not completely familiar with high frequency analysis.

1 out of 5 stars too many errors and misconceptions.......2004-02-21

I am very displeased with this book. Many errors in figures and equations. Section 4.2.2 is fundamentally in error.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not solid one.......2002-10-26

The book starts every chapter with good start but ends each chapter with so so. I guess the authors start each chapter with great enthusiasm and then lose it towards the end chapter. The book has some mistakes in the worked example, as simple as transforming impeadance to admittance and vice versa. It has also other rigorous mathematical mishap.
I do recommend it but not to starters since it could easily confuse . I hope the authors revise it and correct the mistakes and carry the enthusiasm to the end of each chapter.

    5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2002-01-31

I think this book is practically the bible for anyone looking into designing radios. Using the material covered in this book, I've built three functioning transcievers. I started as a amateur, knowing the rock-bottom basics of circuit design, and steadily built increasingly more complex prototypes, until I worked up to a 50 watt transciever operating on 3.80512 GHz.

    5 out of 5 stars great book!.......2005-11-15

I've read many books on the topic and it is amazing how often we realize that the author has no experience in the field. This is book is the perfect exception to that. While it may not be so easy for beginners, it offers insights that you will only come across if you work in the field for quite some years. Don't expect to be spoon-fed; you'll have to use your brain for a change. And yes, I did take the Cornell course when this book was in the form of some scattered notes and thoroughly enjoyed it.

1 out of 5 stars Wow, its that bad.......2005-02-01

This is the second book I have ever reviewed, and only the second book I have felt the need to. You look over the reviews some good some bad, and think, hey I'll try it out. Well let me tell you don't. The book just has no real coherence. It has horrible illegible graphs, no schematics of circuits it actually talks about, and no explanations of the circuits it discusses. It is more a useful tidbit book, if you already knew everything in the book, it might give you a little extra. But man, the amount of information given is near zero if you don't know what's going on.

1 out of 5 stars broad, but not deep........2003-02-22

I used this book when I took the RF Circuit Design class at Cornell. The experience with this book was devastating. It did not give me any good detail of any single RF circuit. I am not sure what kind of background the author expected, but I am sure that this book is not a good choice for a beginner. And if you got a Ph.D. in RF design, why do you wanna read a magazine version of an RF design?

    2 out of 5 stars Confusing.......2003-02-13

I use this book as the standard text of my RF course at Cornell. Honestly, this book is only for casual reading.
Though it covers many topics, but all of them lack in details. For instance, it use 10 pages to explain class A and B amplifier. After reading that 10 pages, I still didn't understand why they are named class A and B. While dealing with modulation, no mathematical details is provided (Does the author assume that we already understand that?) After all, I don't feel this book to be a textbook. The way it treats RF is like a computer magazine treats computer architecture. You learn there are CPU and RAM in a computer from the magazine, but you never learn how to build a CPU or RAM. You can't even learn how to build a full bit adder from it.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!.......2002-04-10

This book is great for casual or serious self-study.
Read Art of Electronics as a prerequisite. And be prepared
to puzzle for a while over each of the RF building blocks
    and design techniques presented.

Radio-Frequency Electronics is made up of short, brutally
minimal chapters on topics central to RF design. This is
one of the few great practical books that the beginner can
use to learn electronic design--and not just for wireless.

The book doesn't attempt to treat RF design with RF ICs,
which is of practical interest to many who are new to RF
electronics. There are also other practical omissions.
But what has been left out makes the core material even
    more general and compelling.

The typesetting and display mathematics are unusually
clear, high-quality, and pleasing, as are the illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide for Highpower HF Amplifier Design.......2000-04-15

This is one fine book that deals with all the thoretical, practical and thermal aspects of Highpower Broadband amplifiers using Solidstate devices. Eventhough the examples and discussions are centered mainly around the Motorola RF Transistors, the principles can be extended to semiconductor devices manufactured by any manufacturer. The authors have dealt with the subject matter in a thorough and a very easy to understand manner.I have been reading H.O.Granberg's articles in QST,RF Design and Motorola Application Notes since the early 80s as they were always packed with his tremendous experience in the field of Solidstate RF design. No matter whether you are a professional designer or an advanced radio amateur, you are sure to find it a gem in your collection of technical books.

      ASIN: 0792373669

      Book Description

A major advantage of a direct digital synthesizer (DDS) is that its output frequency, phase and amplitude can be precisely and rapidly manipulated under digital processor control. Other inherent DDS attributes include the ability to tune with extremely fine frequency and phase resolution, and to rapidly `hop' between frequencies. These combined characteristics have made the technology popular in military radar and communications systems. In fact, DDS technology was previously applied almost exclusively to high-end and military applications: it was costly, power-hungry, difficult to implement, and required a discrete high speed D/A converter. Due to improved integrated circuit (IC) technologies, they now present a viable alternative to analog-based phase-locked loop (PLL) technology for generating agile analog output frequency in consumer synthesizer applications.
It is easy to include different modulation capabilities in the DDS by using digital signal processing (DSP) methods, because the signal is in digital form. By programming the DDS, adaptive channel bandwidths, modulation formats, frequency hopping and data rates are easily achieved. The flexibility of the DDS makes it ideal for signal generator for software radio. The digital circuits used to implement signal-processing functions do not suffer the effects of thermal drift, aging and component variations associated with their analog counterparts. The implementation of digital functional blocks makes it possible to achieve a high degree of system integration. Recent advances in IC fabrication technology, particularly CMOS, coupled with advanced DSP algorithms and architectures are providing possible single-chip DDS solutions to complex communication and signal processing subsystems as modulators, demodulators, local oscillators, programmable clock generators, and chirp generators. The DDS addresses a variety of applications, including cable modems, measurement equipments, arbitrary waveform generators, cellular base stations and wireless local loop base stations.
Direct Digital Synthesizers was written to find possible applications for radio communication systems. It will have appeal for wireless and wireline communication engineers, teachers and students.

        Book Description

Recently, wireless LAN standards have emerged in the market. Those standards operate in various frequency ranges. To reduce component count, it is of importance to design a multi-mode frequency synthesizer that serves all wireless LAN standards including 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g standards. With different specifications for those standards, designing integer-based phase-locked loop frequency synthesizers can not be achieved. Fractional-N frequency synthesizers offer the solution required for a common multi-mode local oscillator. Those fractional-N synthesizers are based on delta-sigma modulators which in combination with a divider yield the fractional division required for the desired frequency of interest.

In CMOS Single Chip Fast Frequency Hopping Synthesizers for Wireless Multi-Gigahertz Applications, the authors outline detailed design methodology for fast frequency hopping synthesizers for RF and wireless communications applications. Great emphasis on fractional-N delta-sigma based phase locked loops from specifications, system analysis and architecture planning to circuit design and silicon implementation.

The book describes an efficient design and characterization methodology that has been developed to study loop trade-offs in both open and close loop modelling techniques. This is based on a simulation platform that incorporates both behavioral models and measured/simulated sub-blocks of the chosen frequency synthesizer. The platform predicts accurately the phase noise, spurious and switching performance of the final design. Therefore excellent phase noise and spurious performance can be achieved while meeting all the specified requirements. The design methodology reduces the need for silicon re-spin enabling circuit designers to directly meet cost, performance and schedule milestones.

The developed knowledge and techniques have been used in the successful design and implementation of two high speed multi-mode fractional-N frequency synthesizers for the IEEE 801.11a/b/g standards. Both synthesizer designs are described in details.

          Book Description

Design and Test of Integrated Inductors for RF Applications is the result of several years of research in the field of Radio-Frequency Integrated Circuit Design, specifically in the Inductor design for RF applications in conventional technologies.
One of the key elements today in the wireless industry, especially in the silicon RF integrated circuits field, is the design of high-quality passive elements. The performance of several basic circuit blocks such as low noise amplifiers, mixers and voltage controlled oscillators depends on the quality of these elements.
The work done establishes the design guidelines for the definition of the inductor's geometrical characteristics and new techniques to improve their quality. It also covers their measurement and characterisation. This fact is not always taken into account by the designers due to the lack of information in bibliography regarding to this topic. The novelty of this work lies in that it covers and studies the whole design flow of an inductor. From the definition and analysis of the physical effects that appear in them to their modelization, it covers issues such as the maximization of the quality by a correct definition of the geometry, novel aggressive design rules, a design flow for the definition of the inductor's geometry, selection of the measurement equipment, de-embedding, determination of the relation that exists between the measurement configuration and the circuit model used in the characterization, source of errors, etc.
Design and Test of Integrated Inductors for RF Applications is intended for engineers who are starting out in the design of integrated inductors, this due to the fact that it describes the whole design flow, basic selection of the geometry, optimisation of the quality by redesigning the geometry, measurement and de-embedding and characterisation. Secondly it will help the designer with much experience in this field, this due to the fact that, based on empirical data, some design rules that have been widely used by the design community have been proved to be really conservative and breaking them leads up to higher quality designs.

          Book Description

Radio-Frequency Microelectronic Circuits for Telecommunication Applications covers the design issues of radio-frequency microelectronic circuits for telecommunication applications with emphasis on devices and circuit-level design. It uses a large number of real examples from industrial design as a vehicle both to teach the principles and to ensure relevance starting from device level modeling to basic RF microelectronic circuit cell design. Modeling for high-frequency operation of both active and passive integrated devices is covered starting from the bipolar transistor to the MOS transistor to the modeling of integrated spiral inductors, resistors, capacitors, varactors and package parasitics structures. A chapter is also devoted to the presentation of the basic definitions and terminology used in RF IC design. The book continues with the presentation of the principal building blocks of an integrated RF front-end, namely, the LNA, the mixer, the VCO and integrated filters. Design paradigms are provided classified on the technology used in each case: pure bipolar, CMOS, BiCMOS or SiGe.
Radio-Frequency Microelectronic Circuits for Telecommunication Applications is essential reading for all researchers, practising engineers and designers working in RF electronics. It is also a reference for use in advanced undergraduate or graduate courses in the same field.

Very disappointing for $120. Just get the papers and buy T. Lee's book instead, especially if you're designing in CMOS. This brief book seems to be basically a collection of information gathered from ISSCC/JSSC papers. There was a surprising lack of subject matter here, although good basic information on RF is included in the text, but you could easily find the information elsewhere.
