Book Description
THE DEFINITIVE RESOURCE ON MIDLIFE DEVELOPMENT
Edited by Margie Lachman, a leader in the field, Handbook of Midlife Development provides an up-to-date portrayal of human development during the middle years of the life span. Featuring contributions from well-established, highly regarded experts, this exhaustive reference fills the gap for a compilation of research on this increasingly important topic.
Divided into four comprehensive sections, the book addresses the theoretical, biomedical, psychological, and social aspects of midlife development. Each chapter includes coverage of unifying themes such as gender differences, ethnic and cultural diversity, historical changes, and socioeconomic differences from a life-span developmental perspective. Readers will discover what can be learned from individuals' subjective conceptions of midlife; explore various "cultural" fictions of middle age; examine the resources individuals have at their disposal to negotiate midlife; consider mechanisms for balancing work and family; and other topics as presented in the latest research from the social, behavioral, and medical sciences.
Handbook of Midlife Development is an indispensable resource for professionals and practitioners who work with adults and for researchers and students who study adult development and related topics.
Some of the midlife topics discussed:
- Cultural perspectives
- Physical changes
- Stress, coping, and health
- Intellectual functioning
- Memory
- Personality and the self
- Adaptation and resilience
- Emotional development
- Families and intergenerational relationships
- Social relationships
- The role of work
- Planning for retirement

Book Description
The fields of health care, aging, and social work are often treated as discrete entities, while all social workers deal with issues of health and aging on a daily basis, regardless of practice specialization. The Handbook of Social Work in Health and Aging is the first reference to address this reality by compiling the most current thinking on these subjects in a single volume. With the population of older adults increasing as rapidly as new possibilities for their care, professionals need an accessible source of specialized information about how best to serve the elderly and their families, and they will find this authoritative handbook indispensable. In 100 original chapters, the most experienced and prominent gerontological health care scholars in the United States and across the world provide social workers with up-to-date knowledge of evidence-based practice guidelines for effectively assessing and treating older adults and supporting their families. The contributing authors paint rich portraits of a variety of populations that social workers serve and arenas in which they practice, followed by detailed recommendations of best practices for an array of physical and mental health conditions. Its unprecedented attention to diversity, global trends, and implications for research, government policy, and education make the publication of such a compendium a major event in the field of gerontological social work. Ambitious and multi-dimensional, this handbook represents the best research on health and aging available to social workers today.
Customer Reviews:
helpful, comprehensive, easy to navigate.......2006-03-01
The Handbook is a godsend for people desiring one-stop shopping for information about older adults and health topics. Chapters cover almost every imaginable disease in the beginning, and then go on to look at social conditions and population diversity among older Americans, and also has a section on aging as an international topic.

complex and dry.......2007-02-19
The first chapter of this book resulted in the two of us students asking the professor if we could choose another book due to its stuffy, dry complexity. But we hung in there and by chapter 3 it started getting more readable. The book does cover the subject pretty thoroughly for its time (starting to get outdated now with all the newer theories coming out). However, all in all, I would have enjoyed a newer version if one was available. To be fair, our professor says this book is the "gold standard" on the topic.

Book Description
Dramatic societal changes have reshaped America’s families. Young adults have delayed marriage, and cohabitation before marriage has become commonplace. One in three women giving birth is unmarried, and the proportion of children under 18 living in single-parent families rose from 23 to 31 percent between 1980 and 2000, reflecting increased rates of both nonmarital childbearing and divorce.
This authoritative volume offers a blueprint for addressing some of the most important measurement issues in family research, and it points out potential pitfalls for researchers and students who may not be familiar with data quality issues.
The Handbook of Measurement Issues in Family Research will appeal to scholars in the departments of psychology, sociology, and population studies, as well as researchers working in governmental agencies.

ASIN: 0120883872 |
Book Description
The Handbook of the Biology of Aging, Sixth Edition, provides a comprehensive overview of the latest research findings in the biology of aging. Intended as a summary for researchers, it is also adopted as a high level textbook for graduate and upper level undergraduate courses.
The Sixth Edition is 20% larger than the Fifth Edition, with 21 chapters summarizing the latest findings in research on the biology of aging. The content of the work is virtually 100% new. Though a selected few topics are similar to the Fifth Edition, these chapters are authored by new contributors with new information. The majority of the chapters are completely new in both content and authorship.
The Sixth Edition places greater emphasis and coverage on competing and complementary theories of aging, broadening the discussion of conceptual issues. Greater coverage of techniques used to study biological issues of aging include computer modeling, gene profiling, and demographic analyses. Coverage of research on Drosophilia is expanded from one chapter to four. New chapters on mammalian models discuss aging in relation to skeletal muscles, body fat and carbohydrate metabolism, growth hormone, and the human female reproductive system. Additional new chapters summarize exciting research on stem cells and cancer, dietary restriction, and whether age related diseases are an integral part of aging.
The Handbook of the Biology of Aging, Sixth Edition is part of the Handbooks on Aging series, including Handbook of the Psychology of Aging and Handbook of Aging and the Social Sciences, also in their 6th editions.

Customer Reviews:
Realistic Look at Death.......2003-08-31
"As men, we are all equal in the presence of death." ~Publilius Syrus
I would recommend this book to prepare for your own funeral or as a way to help family members pre-plan their own funerals. There is a "Quick Reference for Those Who Face the Death of a Loved One." In the midst of grief, this book could also help you quickly select various services and methods of burial before arriving at the funeral home.
This is a book for people who are worried about "Death Care Professionals" taking advantage of them. The information in this book will encourage a more frugal approach.
John M. Reigle is an advocate for consumer rights in the funeral industry. He believes people should examine all their options and create a more meaningful service for the living, with less emphasis on caskets, urns and vaults.
While reading, you will discover:
1. The services provided by a funeral home should also include finalizing details after the funeral. I was amazed at all the details that can be taken care of by the funeral home.
2. The wide variety of funeral service options.
3. Sample Forms and checklists.
4. A Memorial Service Planner.
5. Pros and Cons of each burial situation.
6. Death Certificate Information Worksheets
7. Ways to save $1,000s on caskets. You might want to spend more on the actual service
8. Obituary forms.
9. Ideas on gathering information for a meaningful funeral service.
10. List of Body Donation Programs in the United States.
After reading this book, I can now understand why some family members in the past have chosen not to have funerals and also why some have chosen not to have open caskets.
The Services Presented in this Book Include:
Body Donation/No Service
Body Donation/With Memorial Service
Cremation/No Service
Cremation/With Memorial Service
Cremation/With Funeral Service
Burial/No Service
Burial/With Graveside Service
Burial/With Funeral Service
Once you read some of this information, you will definitely realize that the ways we "protect" the deceased can be less for the deceased's benefit and more for the survivor's benefit. There should still be some dignity in death. For the survivors, and for the deceased.
However, if you are not informed, under duress or don't have the time to compare prices of services, you could be taken advantage of and feel worse than you do already due to added financial burdens. I think this is a straightforward source for information on a wide variety of funeral services.
~TheRebeccaReview.com
INDISPENSIBLE- The Only Book of its Kind!.......2003-03-05
When Death Occurs is a step-by-step manual that shows you how to pre-plan for a personalized funeral, memorial, cremation, even body donation. Rather than fish through lots of unnecessary information, you can go directly to the chapters that relate to your personal wants. The book tells you how to save [$], whether you choose to use a funeral home or plan a memorial yourself. Reigle focuses on personalization and planning a memorial that is meaningful and memorable to your family and friends.
I've decided that I wanted a really memorable memorial for myself, but without the financial burden for my loved ones. I looked into the available books on funerals, and none on the market tell you how to plan and save money for what YOU want. Rather take the philosophical route on what is the "best" way to go (burial, cremation, body and tissue donation, etc), Reigle chooses instead to let the consumer decide what is right for them and give step-by-step instructions on how to save money and still get what they want.
I've also heard that Reigle does some pretty great personalized "pre-planning" workshops to accompany the book; there's info to schedule one included in the book. I'm currently trying schedule one for my senior group.
compassionate and protective of the vulnerable.......2003-03-05
This book is by far the best protection a person can have during times of suffering and grief. People will try to take advantage of others at all times, especially when experiencing the loss of a loved one. This book allows a person to familiarize themselves to the funeral processes by giving guidelines to follow during the most important decision-making process. Everyone should have this book in their family.
Identifying seven alternatives to traditional funerals.......2003-01-05
When Death Occurs: A Practical Consumer's Guide by consumer rights advocate John M. Reigle is a comprehensive, "user friendly", step-by-step guide to dealing with the practical and financial realities of funerals, memorial services, burials, cremations, and body donation. When Death Occurs is not a guide for dealing with the emotional pain of losing a loved one; it is a specific manual for handling what must be financially and physically necessarily done with respect to burial or cremation matters, concerns, and decisions. Because of its necessary information, enhanced with an abundance of practical advice (including identifying seven alternatives to traditional funerals), which is presented in a no-nonsense manner, When Death Occurs has the highest recommendation and could result in the savings of thousands of dollars of unnecessary, unneeded, or unwanted expenses.

Book Description
Statistics show that women live longer than men, and that they constitute a substantial majority of the North American population over age 50. But more research has been done on the lives of older men, and the lack of empirical data on aging women has perpetuated a number of myths and stereotypes. Twenty years ago, for example, there was a presumption that only males worked and only males retired, though women often held jobs outside the home and these jobs were sometimes their only source of income. Studies of retirement, therefore, rarely treated the experience of women. Many fallacies still remain, despite a growing body of research conducted by women investigators. This reference provides a comprehensive overview of current research on women and aging and helps correct many mistaken assumptions. Chapters are written by expert contributors and are grouped in several broad sections. The first section provides a historical and theoretical perspective on women and aging and covers topics such as sexism and ageism, representations of older women in the arts, and the attitudes of society toward aging women. The second section treats economic issues related to employment and retirement. The third section explores the psychological and physical health of women and includes related information on topics such as voluntarism and religious activity. The fourth section looks at the particular concerns of women from diverse racial and ethnic groups. It also includes a chapter on the special needs of the rural elderly. The final section studies the relationships of older women, including the impact of widowhood and the significance of friendship patterns. Each chapter cites current research and the volume closes with a selected bibliography of major studies.
