Erros and lack of details make this a poor engineering reference.......2007-08-17
I was looking for a book on WiMax as a reference for designing WiMax radios. Trying to understand WiMax by reading the IEEE 802.16, 16e standards is difficult. The original 802.16-2004 standard was organized in a convoluted way. On top of that there were numerous errors, even in the mathematical formula and the critical system parameters. 16e was written as a errata and addendum to .16. Given the amount of major changes required by .16e, this format of a .16+.16e makes it almost impossible to read to gain engineering understanding. I was looking for a book that could untangle this mess and present the information in .16+.16e in a linear and logical way, if not the MAC, at least the PHYs. The Andrews book does not serve this purpose. Most of the technical details of the WiMax system are missing. For example, a WiMax radio starts with transmitting or receiving the preambles. There are hundreds of preambles in WiMax. I would expect the book to describe all these preambles for reference. It would be even better, if there are insights into the mathematical properties of these preambles for the receiver design. If you agree with my statement, just let me say that the Andrews book contains none of the details the preambles beyond saying WiMax has something called preamble. Of the limited amount of PHY details the book did contain, there are critical errors. For example, the book seems to suggest that the downlink PUSC subchannels consist of two chunks of contiguous OFDM subcarriers of 14 each. According to the 802.16/16e, the 28 subcarriers in a subchannel are scattered. For the lack of details, I feel this book serves poorly as an engineering design reference. It also serves poorly as a guide to untangle the material in IEE802.16/16e due to the lack of details and the critical errors.

As of May 28 2007, if you are going to fork some money onto a WiMax book, this book should be it. The authors were smart to concentrate in explaining the technology building blocks of the standard instead of just following the structure of the 802.16 document. I have read mostly the chapters related to the PHY and I found the explanations and examples clear and to the point. Even if you are not interested in the WiMax standard per se, this book contains very good information about OFDM/OFDMA and multi-antenna techniques for broadband wireless systems. It also has a couple of chapters about link level and system level performance of WiMax that add even more depth to the book.

For those looking for an overview of IEEE 802.16 technology, or for those looking to come up to speed after a period of absence such as me, this is a good book.
an engineer's book.......2007-05-15
Andrews suggests in the Preface that the book will be suited to a wide range of people who want to learn about WiMax. From engineers to graduate students to managers and executives and others. Indeed, there are high level descriptions, scattered throughout the chapters, accessible to those without an engineering degree. But typically, these are introductory summary remarks. The bulk of every chapter is really best understood if you have that engineering background. While the author naturally desires as wide an audience as possible, this is really an engineer's book.
The overviews do show that WiMax exhibits strong advantages over the current and popular WiFi. Like having robust security protocols, including the Advanced Encryption Standard (aka Rijndael) and 3DES. Plus WiMax has terminals that possess built-in digital certificates with public and private keys and MAC addresses. Contrast this with WiFi, whose commonly used Wireless Encryption Protocol has some severe deficiencies.
Another important advantage of WiMax is how it supports extreme mobility modalities. Where you, the end user, can travel in a vehicle up to 120 kmph, and have seamless handoff between WiMax basestations.
Many chapters are highly mathematical. Indeed, one chapter on multi-antennas reads like an excursion into advanced linear algebra or matrix theory. It even evokes the Frobenius norm of a matrix, which I'd only ever seen before in a pure maths course.
Of all the chapters, maybe that which discusses Mobile IP could be the most interesting. It takes the Internet as we know it, and removes a serious current limitation to moving your machine, and having it keep connected to the Internet. Mobile IP is a cunning overlay on IPv4. While it can also be done, and much easier, in IPv6. The only problem is when the latter will start to dominate v4.
Overall, the book is a very promising pitch for WiMax deployment.

It's exactly what the title states, "Adaptive Filter THEORY".......2005-03-17
I was introduced to this text in a graduate course. I was not too thrilled about learning from another Haykin book due to a previous experience with his Communication Systems text in an undergraduate course (Horribly confusing... Proakis's text is infinitely better). To my surprise, the book was very detailed and easy to read. The math is very clear and detailed (great for the self learner). Also, the second chapter, which serves as a review of stationary processes and properties, was written much better than most random process textbooks (I applaud Haykin for this given the section was only a review). In chapter 3 or 4, he shows the derivation of the Levison-Durbin Algorithm step-by-step. I strongly disagree with some of the other reviews stating this text is just the typical engineering manual or cookbook with no explainations.
However, this is either a love or hate text. If you are looking for a text about practical linear predictive filter design, this is NOT the book for you. This text is heavily geared towards understanding the theory behind the design... hence the title Adaptive Filter THEORY. However, it can make a great reference to engineers in the field of DSP.
Not a bad reference book........2004-06-17
This book looks very impressive, but if you try to understand it you'll find it very mechanical. There is not much motivation behind the many pages of formulas and derivations. I'm not even sure how many people actually read those derivations becuase even in its 4th edition the book and its solution manual both have many typos (see, for example, equations 8.11 and 12.5). Even the problems are more focused on derivations than on numerical examples. This is a good cookbook if you just want to implement an algorithm or find some pointers to the original research papers. Like many other reviewers, I beleive that engineering textbooks are losing their depth and becoming more and more like instruction manuals.
A very good book for Adaptive DSP..........2001-05-09
I have always wondered why many people have negative opinions about books by Simon Haykin, whether it is 'Communication Systems' or 'Adaptive Filter Theory'. Particularly, this book 'Adaptive Filter Theory', in my opinion, is one of the bestbooks on this subject. As Julius Kusuma correctly mentioned, this book is indeed an "adventure ride" into the field of Adaptive Filter Theory.
I discovered this book when I was doing a class project on Self-Orthogonalizing algorithms for Adaptive Beamforming and I felt that all the relevant information that I needed was present in this book. I did'nt really feel the neccesity to refer anything outside this book.
Apart from that, this book contains everything that a graduate student needs to know about this exciting field of adaptive filters. The author assumes some background on Random Signal Theory... I'd suggest to look up Sam Shanmugan et al's, "Random Signals: Detection, Estimation and Data Analysis" before beginning to read (enjoy) this "adventure ride" on Adaptive Filters.

Despite the commonly negative opinion against Simon Haykin's book, I find this book to be a very fun reading. It starts off with a very brief review of DSP (more useful just for getting familiar with the notation, really), properties of random processes, and a small section on linear algebra in the middle of the book.
The rest of the book can be viewed as a story of how different approaches and algorithms were developed, and is a little difficult to use as reference due to its lack of structure and over-dependency on the previous chapters, both for technical content and notation. I have to admit that the notation used in this book is very, very poor and can be a source of frustration. The dependency is also a pain because you always have to keep flipping 100 pages back because Mr. Haykin prefers to say "Eqn. (4.24)" instead of "an AR model".
But there's a lot of hidden treasures within this book that should have been more emphasized. For example, Mold's theorem that states that any discrete stationary process can be decomposed into a deterministic component and a random component, which are uncorrelated to each other. I'm sorry, but a reference to a proof in another book is not enough to really motivate me. This is a very fundamental theorem if you're interested in stochastic signal processing. Sure, you don't cover the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus in your very first calculus class, but then again this is supposed to be a fairly advanced book.
So if you're interested in learning certain things quickly, this is NOT the book to get. Consider Munson Hayes' book instead. Save this one when you feel like investing a little time to hear Haykin's story on stochastic signal processing.

Excellent patterns book.......2007-08-28
Upon recently changing jobs and focusing on messaging design and architecture, I was steered toward this book by my peers. Without getting into too much detail, before joining my new team, I had never heard of patterns (came from a product support area), much less asynchronous messaging design. Needless to say, this book has been invaluable in my learning process as well as conveying our direction to others.
This book is written in such a way that it is very intuitive. Diagrams help support the concepts and code examples as well.
I would highly recommend this as a must read/reference guide for anyone designing messaging solutions.
Great book for messaging pattern understanding.......2007-08-27
This is a fantastic book if you are looking for patterns to base your messaging designs and architecture around. The way this book goes about explaining some of the asynchronous messaging patterns seemed to provide a great deal of benefit to developers and designers who were stuck in the synchronous way of doing things. Great explanations and illustrations, would recommend to anyone researching EAI or ESB technologies or just a more structured, efficient way of messaging in general.

Just started out reading and though I feel a little overwhelmed I can so much relate to all the patterns being discussed. Its being tough to digest and register the terminologies but I am sure I will get there as I progress. Definitely the best technical books I have ever purchased and is must have for any one who is involved with application integration !

Look, problems involving digital signals and systems can get very complicated, but the basics are just that--basic. This famous book on DSP is a quintessential example of academic propaganda: it misinforms the general public into thinking the subject matter is far harder than it is, while it privately informs insiders with very precise information.

It is my pleasure to comment on this book which I recently purchased. I have two of Dr. Oppenheim's previous books. This book is a core integration of a topic with too many diverse starting points (mine was digital filters derived from Prony's method, not in the book by name). Dr. Bose was my first EE Professor. Alan Oppenheim was my second EE instructor. Alan (just finished MSEE at the time) had not published a book yet, but his focus was always on your questions. His product was your understanding. Six star book on Digital Signal Processing.......2006-03-01
This is the outstanding 2nd edition of Oppenheim's classic DSP book, which for over two decades was the only real choice for a textbook on the subject. That was too bad, since the first edition was probably the worst thing I have ever seen in print - terse, incomprehensible, and with only a few awful and poorly illustrated examples. When I decided to take a refresher course in DSP, I was horrified to see our class would be using the second edition of that horrendous text. What I found instead was a completely rehabilitated textbook! This is not a beginner's DSP textbook by any stretch of the imagination, but absolutely everything is explained and there are plenty of well worked out examples. The end-of-chapter problems are broken down into simple, intermediate, and advanced problems with quite a few mind-puzzlers in the advanced section. Plus, the answers to the first 20 problems in every chapter are in the back of the book.
There is really nothing unique about the book's format. What does makes the book unique is the density and amount of material included. Just about every page is packed with well-explained important information. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has had a prior semester of an upper-level undergraduate class in Signals and Systems and wants to study DSP. An accompanying book that you might find helpful is "Understanding Digital Signal Processing" by Lyons. That book is good for getting an intuitive feel for DSP. Another book that will help you with some of the earlier concepts in this book (linear systems, DTFT, Z-transform, DFT, basic filter design) and some of the direct computations involved is "Schaum's Outline of Digital Signal Processing". Amazon does not show the table of contents, so I do that here:

I haven't gone through this book all the way yet since classes haven't started; however, it seems to be a very well written book that is easy to get the necessary concepts out of easily. Once the class is done I will try to add a further review.

This is the book that focuses on the concept more than any thing else which ,in turn, build up your insight through the material.
This book addresses discrete time signal processing issues in an ordinary fashion and doesn't cover more advanced topics like wavelets or statistical signal processing.
Maybe you would be interested in this book if you are that senior/first year graduate student looking forward a nice job with a high salary or a DSP engineer that is interested in keeping his job :)
Overall, nothing can get better than Oppenheim DSP 1975 but however, this is a nice volume if you don't have the preceding one.

unless you have an awesome professor that teaches in detail your going to need additional books/resources to help you learn the subject. all the information in the book is vague, it goes into very little detail, and doesnt help you complete the problems at the end of the chapters

...and save yourself the grief of trying to learn anything from this book. This is the required text in one of my EE courses and I haven't found a single redeeming quality in it yet.
The material is not presented in a very concise manner I typically spend a great deal of time filtering through the chapters to find the important details. Most of the time I have to go to a text from one of my other courses to find what I am looking for.
The examples are few and not helpful in working the exercises at the end of the chapters.
Any good text on circuit analysis which covers the Fourier and Laplace transforms and their applications would be more useful.
One of the worst written college books ever........2005-04-02
Having had to suffer through 1 semester of this book, I was horrified to learn that my school had decided to keep this book for the second semester of signals! This is book would be much better as a hyperlinked document, because the author continuously references other chapters and formula #'s. His examples are confusing, and leave you wondering what you are looking for. A visist to the book's website leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth. Honestly, if you need this book, find another book to use as a reference because you will need it.

I used this book as an extra study aid for my course. I only used this book to study one concept -- transformations of singularity functions in continuous time. I really didnt need this book for anything else. But based on what I learned in this book it helped me a lot. I didn't go into deep details of this book.

I bought this book when I and almost the class (very bad teacher gave bad problems) failed the "Signals and Systems" exam , and now I'm thinking from the point of view of someone who knows nothing (actualy I had passed the exam).
The introduction is good presented with enough explanation,but from the moment it reach "Convolution" you will not understand what you have red.The text is poor in explanation but it doesn't disorient you (you will not understand something else,but you will feel empty).The graphs are poor in number and everytime poorly explained.I think the author tried to write as few pages as possible even if he have had to sacrifice the entire content.When reading,it feels as it is compressed (you will not see things twice and some new things are introduced between the lines not leting enough space to be seen).So this edition is doomed and you will have no hope to understand if you want to move quickly (there is a lot of woork).Reguarding being a reference,I think ... it is (I have liked that keywords,formulas and other keythings to be marked in a conventional manner so that I can find them quickly when I'm looking behind).Now I'm looking forward to buy "B. P. Lathi's" book "Linear Signals and Systems" which I hope will be better.
Why I bought this book ? Because the site from which I bought it,hasn't had a "REVIEW" for it.So I realize how important is for us to write reviews.It's about quality that we all want !

I don't usually write online reviews but this book is so clear and useful that I really want to recommend it to others. It is well written with a good outline and summary for every chapter. It also has a pretty diverse range of topics on estimation, including an introductory chapter on basic estimation approaches (e.g., ML, MAP, least squares), and very practical extensions (e.g., state augmentation, square-root filters). Even though I am not in EE and some of the examples are thus not particularly helpful to me, I still find this book one of the best of all the estimation/Kalman filter books out there.

I think any person who major in target tracking system related to the Kalman filter must see this book. This book present the fundamentals of state estimation theory and the tools for the design of state-of-the-art algorithms for target tracking.
The book covers the basic concepts and estimation techniques for static and dynamic systems, linear and nonlinear, as well as adaptive estiomation. This constitutes a one semester graduate course in estimation theory in an electrical/systems engineering program.
The discussion deals mainly with discrete time estimation algorithms, which are natural for digital computer implementation. The basic state estimation algorithm-the Kalman filter-is presented in discrete as well as in continuous time. The use of the estimation algorithms is illustrated on kinematic motion models because they reveal all the major issues and in particular the subtleties encountered in estimation, and this serves as an introdution to tracking.
Guidelines for tracking filter design-selection of the filter design parameters-are given and illustrated in several examples.
At the end of each chapter, a number of problems that enhance the understanding of the theory and the connection of the theoretical material to the real world are given.

This book is the best available in market to understand the basics of Signal Processing with crisp explanations and very good mathematical treatment. Still I feel that, after reading this book one must switch to EITHER the book by Proakis and Manolakis OR the book by Oppenheim for more thorough knowledge. The knowledge gained from Prof Lathi's book makes others easy to comprehend. I would strongly recommend this book to any novice in Signal Processing domain.
Mathematically rigorous but explaining physical significance.......2006-01-31
This book clearly explains the physical significance of many phenomenon and topics that we come across in this subject. The most striking feature is that it does so from the fundamental linear differential equation and gives us very good insight of the subject and a sense of completeness . Definitely its better than Oppenheim book which deals the subject a bit more mathematical.

The Lathi book is fine, and covers both continuous and discrete signals, but is a little hard to read at times. A better book that covers both is the one by Oppenheim & Willsky. And if you want a much better book for the discrete side of things then get Discrete-Time Signal Processing by Oppenheim, Schafer, & Buck.

this is a gem of a book on this subject no need to waste ur time reading abtruse and unfriendly books,the writer of this books comes down to the understanding of average student to explain the beautifull ideas of this subject.he is crystal clear about the subject and i have not found any book as good as this . he gives a good brushing up review in mathematics which is very very helpful.take my my advice ur money is safe in buying it .to do more numerical problems u can refer to A.V Oppenheim(a more difficult book).

Great Undergraduate Signals and Systems Textbook.......2002-11-02
This is truly a superior book for teaching Signals and Systems. It far outpaces the competition in my mind, especially in terms of conceptual descriptions, examples, and readability. It was the only text (I have looked at the most popular 6) that I found that is written in a coherent and readable manner, such that it could serve as a standalone self-paced tutorial.
I am teaching this course for the first time this fall and found almost every one of my student's (and mine) conceptual and mathematical questions answered clearly by this text. I naively adopted Oppenheim since it is a classic, but that text truly pales in comparison.
Examples of things I appreciate in Lathi:
1) It serves as an excellent reference book, with a background mathematics section, tables of transforms and properties.
2) It generally starts each subject at the right point (e.g., with the trigonometic Fourier Series) to give student better conceptual understanding. I doesn't skip the basics.
3) It answers many common conceptual questions like "What is the meaning of negative frequencies in the FT?", "What do complex numbers mean physically?"
4) I love the history and wit (Is it a sin to make a textbook readable and even enjoyable?)
5) A lot of references to real engineering applications. For example, a REAL chapter on DIGITAL FILTER DESIGN.
I could go on, but it is obvious that the author put a great deal of care into this text and even the solutions CD. This, for upper-level undergraduate texts, in my opinion, is truly rare (see however, "Griffiths" and "Zahn" for E&M)
NOTE: By the way, for a previous reviewer, Ms. Chaston, in my text, the appendices are located on pages 161, 222, 356, 457, and 609.
Finally, I must admit that my own stupid prejudice cost me from adopting this textbook this year. I thought to myself, can a book written by a man with the name "Bhagawandas Pannalal" truly write this eloquently in English? As I get more in depth into the book, the answer is clearly YES and more.

Lots of Little Problems make for one big flaw.......2006-04-04
Like other reviewers I have found many problems that indicate lack of a quality technical editor. There are several typos per chapter most heavily concentrated in the math sections (missing parenthesis, squares, improper powers, units and just bad math). This has been typical for other editons of this book. I would not suggest using this text in a learning enviroment due to the confusion caused by the numerous typos.

This book has all the ingredients of a good book: good writing style, well explained, proper diagrams, etc. The concepts have been explained well in this book. There was only one problem that i had in this book: The inital part in the FM chapter, the derivation adopts a different technique and somehow landed up with something different. It was different from what was being taught in the class and what was presented in other books, e.g. Electronic Communication Systems by Kennedy, Davis. I'm not saying its wrong, but was something totally different. Barring that, the text book is an excellent one. Well done.

This is not really a book big on theory. Instead, its main merit is a focused, problem-based approach. For long established subjects like calculus, say, the usefulness of having extensive problem sets for a student to tackle is apparent. And thus there are indeed plenty of texts to supply those problems.
But for the mobile wireless field, most standards and implementations are still so new. There has been little time for some author to come up with a suitable and indepth suite of problems, until this text. The comprehensive nature of these may be very attractive to a lecturer. Plus, the author also offers an adjunct solutions book.

This is the Bible on Telephone Systems and it only took 100 years to write. I was searching for a long time for such a book only to be disappointed time and again. From beginner to expert the book has something for everyone and goes into great detail about topics not usually found elsewhere like switching fabrics and photonics as applied to formal telecom. Dr. Thompson has created the defacto standard reference for the true, hardcore, telecom professional and others who seek to enter this domain. I would recommend the book specifically to those in or entering the field of Voice over IP to gain a solid perspective on what they will be dealing with when it comes to convergence.

Don't waste your money on this tome if you're a beginner like myself. However, if you are a professional, this would be a great reference to have on your desk. A more detailed book on telephone switches probably doesn't exist.
For beginners, the author really provided way too much detail. His writing style is very bland. In order to understand the dense material, you have to follow the words very carefully, and then you probably would doze off. Like the other reviewer, I find the density of material counterproductive and impenetrable.

This is a "the real deal" book for beginner in switching and telephony world. Although this book requires some preliminary knowledge of North American industrial telephony standards and understanding, the author tried (as best as he could) to explain everything in details. There are no skipped topics, to be concerned.
However, in many times the author explained things too wordy. Those wordy explaination could somewhat derail some readers. I sometimes skip some topics to read the next, but then I have to come back to get better understanding. I wish that the author could illustrate more his explanation. Giving more pictures and tables I think would increase the reader's understanding. But anyway, this is a good book and should be owned by anybody who need "the next step" out of ordinary telephony understanding.

If you want to know all about telephone switching systems, this book is a must. This is the most detail book I 've ever read. And most important,this book is fun to read. I really like this book. The downside of this book is its price, but I think it is worth every penny.
