The Fingerprints of God: Tracking the Divine Suspect through a History of Images
Robert Farrar Capon Manufacturer: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0802847684 |
Book Description
In The Fingerprints of God best-selling author Robert Farrar Capon takes readers on a sleuthing project, using his own uniquely developed history of images to find evidence of the Divine Suspect in our midst." "Capon first explores various images that prompt proper talk about God and the nature of Scripture. The Bible, he says, is the mystery story of God's hidden presence as the Divine Suspect behind all history. Capon discusses the misuse of Scripture due to literalist interpretation, looks at the ways Christ has suffered at the hands of human image-makers, and proposes a novel understanding of salvation history that clarifies the proper roles of Scripture, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus." "In the second part of the book Capon turns his magnifying glass on major thinkers from church history - Irenaeus, Athanasius, Anselm, Luther, Melanchthon, Calvin, Julian of Norwich, and others - pointing out both the strong and the weak images they have produced. Throughout the centuries, Capon sees God as the "Divine Bowler" trying to knock down the faulty "pins" of ideas that have been set up in the lanes of religious history, while also disclosing himself in profound and powerful ways.Customer Reviews:
Re-forming the Reformation.......2000-08-08
In his own inimitable style, Father Capon has the Holy Spirit saying (in a dialogue among the Trinity at the beginning of the book), "They're going to paint themselves into a corner and say that the unbaptized go to hell or even that sins after Baptism make forgiveness flake off like a bad paint job, and that unless Christians go to confession for a second coat before they die, they'll go to hell too. Oh sure. We've also agreed on this Reformation business where I convince them that nobody has to do anything to be forgiven except trust the grace that Jesus has already given everybody. But give them a hundred years after that and they'll manage to turn faith itself into a requirement for grace: no faith, no forgiveness. Out the window again goes the free gift we've given them once and for all; and back in comes forgiveness as a deal that's good only as long as they behave themselves."
The author goes on to explain how the great church reformers such as Irenaeus, Athanasius. Luther, Calvin and Melanchthon, while contributing invaluable insights essential to a true reformation, still slipped in this pernicious transactionalism. "Human beings aren't afraid of accountability," says Capon's Holy Spirit, "they're crazy about it. If they can't get credit for themselves or dish out blame to others, they cry, 'Unfair!'"
Father Capon says he was originally planning to call the book *Re-forming the Reformation* and I think that may have been a better title for it (a worthy double entendre) because the book seems to hang together on the explication of these wrong turns in Christendom better than it does on an exploration of images. The only time images take center stage is when the author is talking about Literalism/Fundamentalism vs. Liberalism (turning the Bible into a book of ethics and denying the mystery) and he says both views are mistakes. God can jolly well use any device he wants to tell the STORY of scripture - images in poetry, hyperbole, allegory, parables, and yes, even literalism - even though the latter is seldom employed. So literalism is madness and deconstructivist liberalism takes all the vital juice out of it and who needs that?
The history of church thought that the author covers is most valuable and enlightening, but I thought that the imaginary dialogue with the church fathers toward the end of the book was a bit pedantic and tedious. Most of the same points were made in an earlier chapter.
But the burning question, to my mind, is - isn't the atonement itself a transaction no matter how you slice it? Just as C.S. Lewis says that the fall of man didn't HAVE to happen, did the atonement HAVE to take place? What dark necessity required it? Was it a god above and beyond or behind the Father as the god of Destiny was behind and beyond and above Zeus? We find out what the atonement is NOT. It's not a "ransom" - a transaction between God and the devil; it's not a task - a "what" that Jesus accomplished by fulfilling a transactional bill of particulars; it's not even a "bait and switch scam perpetrated by God himself" where "the cross is a mousetrap for the devil" (although Capon seems to favor this interpretation above the other two because it has a sense of humor). But I'm still scratching my head. How ELSE to see the atonement except as SOME kind of transaction?
To be fair to Capon, this was a burning question with me long before I read *The Fingerprints of God*, but since his earlier books (that little gem of Theodicy) *The Third Peacock* and the Parable books (Parables of the Kingdom, Judgment and Grace) changed my life and outlook, I was hoping this one would answer that question. Who knows? Maybe the next one will. In any case, Robert Farrar Capon's books are all and always worth reading, in my opinion. Read this one. Read his others. You won't be disappointed.

Some problems reconciling Dr. Ross's theology with the Bible.......2001-06-15
I do not believe that those who adhere to some form of theistic evolution (God used evolution to create everything) or progressive creation (God intervened at various points in the process of evolution) fully realize that their position violates clear concepts revealed in the Bible--indeed much that is foundational to the very Gospel itself.
For instance..
Concept violated: the goodness of God
The Bible says 'God is good' and in Genesis 1:31 God described his just finished creation as 'very good'. How do you understand the goodness of God if He used evolution, 'nature red in tooth and claw', to 'create' everything?
Concept violated: Adam's sin brought death and decay, the basis of the Gospel
According to the evolutionist's (and progressive creationist's) understanding, fossils (which show death, disease and bloodshed) were formed before people appeared on earth. Doesn't that mean that you can't believe the Bible when it says that everything is in 'bondage to decay' because of Adam's sin (Romans 8)? In the evolutionary view, hasn't the 'bondage to decay' always been there? And if death and suffering did not arise with Adam's sin and the resulting curse, how can Jesus' suffering and physical death pay the penalty for sin and give us eternal life, as the Bible clearly says (e.g. 1 Corinthians 15:22, "For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all shall be made alive")?
Concept violated: the divine inspiration of the whole Bible
If the Genesis accounts of Creation, the Fall, the origin of nations, the Flood and the Tower of Babel - the first 11 chapters - are not historical, although they are written as historical narrative and understood by Jesus to be so, what other unfashionable parts of the Bible do you discard? The biblical account of creation in Genesis seems very specific with six days of creative activity, each having an evening and a morning. According to the evolutionary sequence, the biblical order of creation is all wrong. Do you think God should have inspired an account more in keeping with the evolutionary order, the truth as you see it, if indeed He did use evolution or followed the evolutionary pattern in creating everything?
Concept violated: the straightforward understanding of the Word of God
If the Genesis account does not mean what it plainly says, but must be 'interpreted' to fit an evolutionary world, how are we to understand the rest of the Bible? How are we to know that the historical accounts of Jesus' life, death and resurrection should not also be 'reinterpreted'? Indeed, can we know anything for sure if the Bible can be so flexible?
Concept violated: the creation is supposed to show the hand of God clearly
Dr Niles Eldredge, well-known evolutionist, said:
'Darwin . . . taught us that we can understand life's history in purely naturalistic terms, without recourse to the supernatural or divine.' [Niles Eldredge, "Time Frames - the Rethinking of Darwinian Evolution and the Theory of Punctuated Equilibrium", 1986, Heinemann, London, p. 13.]
Is it not philosophically inconsistent to marry God (theism) with evolution (naturalism)? If God 'created' using evolution which makes Him unnecessary, how can God's 'eternal power and divine nature' be 'clearly seen' in creation, as Romans 1:20 says? Evolution has no purpose, no direction, no goal. The God of the Bible is all about purpose. How do you reconcile the purposelessness of evolution with the purposes of God? What does God have to do in an evolutionary world? Is not God an 'unnecessary hypothesis'?
Concept violated: the need of restoration for the creation
If God created over millions of years involving death, the existing earth is not ruined by sin, but is as it always has been - as God supposedly intended it to be. So why then should He want to destroy it and create a new heavens and earth (2 Peter 3 and other places)?
Starting to get the picture of where Dr. Ross's compromising theology leads?
See the Answers in Genesis website for volumnes of eye-opening information.
Books I would strongly encourage one to read instead: "Icons of Evolution" by Jonathan Wells, "Bones of Contention" by Marvin Lubenow, "Evolution: The Fossils Still Say No!" by Duane Gish, "In Six Days: Why Fifty Scientists Choose to Believe in Creation" by John F. Aston, "Evolution: A Theory in Crisis" by Michael Denton, "Astronomy and the Bible" by Donald B. DeYoung, "Refuting Evolution" by Jonathan Sarfati, "The Answers Book" by Ham/Snelling/Wieland, and "The Young Earth" by John Morris.
The unstated premise.......2000-03-31
The first part of the book details the growth of human awareness about the universe, and is a history almost any scientist would agree with. The result, of course, is that the universe is not infinite in time or space. Towards the end of this exposition, however, some paranoid-seeming remarks creep into the story to the effect that there was a conspiracy of anti-god scientists who tried to keep science from discovering the finite age of the universe, which as a student of the history of cosmology I can say is utter nonsense. If anthing, the reverse was true.
Once Ross finishes summarizing the state of modern cosmology, he concludes that since the universe is finite in age, life must have been created by God. His unstated assumption is that life could only evolve in an infinitely old universe. It is never stated as a central theme, and one cannot find it in a section title. Only by going back did I find it obscurely embedded at the end of some conversations in the cosmology chapters. One mention did come with bibliographic references. Many were technical papers with titles like "On the Information Content of Cytochome c". These are not famous papers, and would seem to require highly technical interpretation. In the absence of any discussion of their contents as related to a key assumption, one wonders if they are not decorations to the story. Ross would have done better to write the reverse: spend half the book explaining why life can only evolve in an infinite amount of time, and take it as a given that the universe is not infinitely old.
The end of the book degenerates into the standard creationist "scientific" interpretations of biblical myth, which horrify anyone acquainted with the scientific method of repeatable experiment, and whose transgressions are too numerous and space-consuming to be repeated here.

There oughtta be a law against posting reviews as a way of having one's say. These reviews can affect the sales of a book. But I guess the reviewers either never thought of that, or don't care. Some Christian attitude.
Well, I _HAVE_ read the book. It was my first discovery of Dr. Ross, and I thought it was wonderful. For those who actually care about its contents, let's get something very straight: Dr. Ross is an _ASTRONOMER_, not a theologian. His book is not about apologetics, no matter what you may have read to the contrary. He has one purpose, which he very clearly states: To point out that there is no need for a war between science and religion, much less a war between different factions within Christianity. As Dr. Ross carefully points out, there have been _NO_ -- that's no, as in zero -- scientific discoveries in recent years that are not consistent with the Bible's depiction of Creation. Quite the contrary, all modern discoveries -- the Big Bang being one obvious example -- point to a creation much like that described so perfectly in Genesis.
Therefore, says Ross, let's bury the hatchet. Let's stop fighting amongst ourselves, let's stop the bickering between scientists and believers, let's stop the bickering between Young Earth Creationists and Old Earth Creationists, let's stop the bickering between Evolutionists and Creationists, and for a change, let's just look at the evidence of God's nature, left for us both in His Word, and in His Creation.
A novel idea, wouldn't you say? A pity no one posting here was paying attention, or bothered to read and comprehend Ross's message. They would, it would seem, much prefer to bicker.
Children share your toys.......2002-08-28
Following close behind in amusement value are the folks who can't accept that the earth is more than 10 thousand years old. Face facts, people; there is evidence of continuous, gradual erosion all around us. And no, one gigantic global flood us not a sufficient explanation. The orderly nature of the sediment layers alone disqualifies this explanation. All in all, I highly recommend Dr. Ross' books for those strong enough to face the truth.

Fingerprints of God: Evidences from Near-Death Studies, Scientific Research on Creation & Mormon Theology
Arvin S. Gibson Manufacturer: Horizon Pub & Dist Inc ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0882906747 |
Product Description
Star dust! That is what our physical bodies are made of. But the real us - the spiritual beings temporarily clothed in star dust - we are the stuff of eternity, organized by God. In this fascinating book, Arvin Gibson takes us on a journey to find answers about the mysteries of God's existence, and of our existence too. That journey takes us on three difference paths: near-death studies, the creation as understood by scientists, and Mormon theology. As the journey expands, we find that there are interwoven patterns from each of the paths pointing to an inescapable conclusion - that proofs of God's existence are everywhere. In this journey you will marvel at the illuminating accounts of people who have had near-death experiences (NDEs) where they received profound glimpses of life beyond mortality. The reality of those experiences, documented by corroborative evidence of what thhey saw and heard while out of their bodies, strongly confirms the existence of God and His influences in our lives. Next, you will see how our physical creation started with the "big bang" and expansion of the universe. You will follow that expansion of the universe. You will follow that expansion of the universe. You will follow that expansin from a small point of enormous energy to the almost limitless cosmos which we now see. The miracle of life and the imporbability of its chance formation will be exposed to your view. Comparison will show you the remarkable agreement between early Mormon experiences and the many NDEs of current interest. Finally, you will see how the Plan of Salvation, as explained in Mormon theology, provides a road map which overlays all of the paths to truth which this book discusses. Many fingerprints of God will be illustrated, and those fingerprints literally shout the message: The laws which govern our universe, the universe itself, and all life therein were created by God. We are sons and daughters of God, commisioned by Him to come to earth for further growth and development. Our destiny, should we so choose, is to become one with the Light and to share in the eternal glory and power of God.

1. It needs to be proven that different people would pick the same word groupings and phrase/clause limits that Washburn has done (e.g., on his Web page with examples, he explains which relevant or distinct words he limits his target phrases to, even admitting to omitting words as not essential to the thought). Otherwise, Washburn could be adding or subtracting preceding or following words to achieve the numbers he seeks.
2. The Greek New Testament text is replete with textual variants. No modern Greek New Testament text, or even any book within the text, is based on the reading of a single manuscript. Rather, the text is a patchwork of readings from the thousands of extant manuscripts, and is created by textual critics who have been trained how to determine what is probably the best reading when manuscripts differ. Get a copy of the Nestle-Aland 27th edition (the latest critical text of the Greek New Testament) and you'll see how frequently the manuscripts vary. Sure, it's often only a word or two, or a letter or two, but since Washburn's thesis is dependent upon calculating the values of the letters that are in the text, a change in even single letters will often alter his results. I know he explains in his first THEOMATICS book how he dealt with this, but it doesn't solve the problem. NO ONE can precisely say what the original manuscripts said on a word-by-word basis.
3. It needs to be proven that other pieces of literature do not show this same apparent numerical consistency between related topics. E.g., if one could show that phrases having to do with velociraptors in JURASSIC PARK exhibit a common mathematical relationship (e.g., by assigning numerical values to the letters of the English alphabet to make it correspond to how the Hebrew and Greek alphabets use letters for numbers), that would likely nullify Washburn's hypothesis.
NOWHERE in his books, to my knowledge, does Washburn provide answers to the above -- i.e., show that these objections to or questions about his theory can conclusively be demonstrated to be invalid, and that his theory stands the test of examination and comparison.

This book is "must reading" for all those who want to know the God of creation better!
