4 out of 5 stars Science Foe ?.......2006-03-18

I have read Supernature and Beyond Supernature a number of times over the span of some twenty years. Hard science well.....hardly. Watson is the layman's science working from the small to the totality.
There are points in the book where you will agree , disagree, wonder at and dismiss. But the book is thought provoking it challenges our beliefs in the sciences, pokes holes in some long standing pillars for instance Neo - Darwinism.
It has a particular world view which some will embrace and others deride without self reflection.

1 out of 5 stars Nonsense.......2004-07-27

Lyall Watson has made quite a living for himself by turning out books that mix sense and nonsense in an appealing way. This book, like "Supernature" before it, glibly asserts that there is indeed a scientific basis for all sorts of unsubstantiated claims made about the supernatural world.

Watson is often described as a naturist or a biologist in publicity blurbs. His PhD is actually in ethology, and was obtained under the direction of Desmond Morris, another academic given to flights of fancy in a scientific context. Like Morris, Watson has long abandoned his scientific studies, relying instead on intuition and speculation. Enjoy his books if you like, but keep in mind that you're not necessarily reading science.

4 out of 5 stars Details the science behind psychic and other phenomena........1999-08-19

This book is a well-researched and detailed attempt to explain the science behind psychic and other "supernatural" phenomena. Watson cleverly takes the reader on a journey from the microscopic to the universal, offering fantastic examples of how the world of nature communicates and survives via an essential, unquantifiable link. This book is rarely dry, due in large part to the scores of reserch Watson has gathered (plants warning of imminent attack by foragers over vast spaces, sea sponges whipped in a blender then regathering into original form, the life and death of a riot crowd) and uses to illustrate our innate bond to each other and the supernatural world.

5 out of 5 stars Double your knowledge, double your fun!.......2006-11-20

After being off line for a long time due to some boring medical issues, I finally have the privilege of writing my second review of this delightful sequel and companion volume to "Strange Highways". In fact, Jerry sent me my volume about a year ago personally, and together with the first book or standing alone, I could not ask for a better crypto-fest.

Without being shallow or perfunctory in any way, Jerry smoothly takes us through many recent years of his crypto research, providing actual fascinating research data to back up his easy, fluid style, and near the end, actually adds some fun recipes for "crypto cooking" for researchers who like to camp out for a cookout. Even though "More Strange Highways" is excellent as a stand-alone unit, I highly recommend buying the first one if you already haven't, and of course any future volumes, which I devoutly hope he will write and publish in the future.

Thank you, Jerry, for enlarging my vision of the magic and mystery of cryptid life once again.

1 out of 5 stars Get A Proofreader - PLEASE!!!!!.......2006-05-22

This book contains a strangely large amount of typos, grammar and spelling errors, and mangled English composition. I started keeping track of all the mistakes in it for my own amusement, but soon gave up in exhaustion. There is simply no excuse for any professionally produced publication to reach the public in such a state. Whitechapel Productions, have you no shame?

1 out of 5 stars Too much emphasis on credibility!!!.......2006-05-08

I never wrote a review until I read the "thunderbirds" book by Mark Hall. I recently purchased both Jerry Coleman books, "strange highways" and "more strange highways" in hopes of getting different perspectives on thunderbirds. I noticed immediately that it seems that Jerry does get out and dig for data and I agree with his findings...the kid probably wasn't carried by the birds. That still leaves us with a mystery as to what species the bird may be. Other than that, I didn't see much of anything that really interested me in these two books. My biggest complaint and I must SCREAM it out is about witness credibility!!! How can these guys interview someone 1, 2, 3, or more times and determine that they are credibile? Furthermore, regarding the road trolls which although interesting seem coincidental, how does the fact or implied fact that the witnesses are "white socks, rednecks, and pabst blue ribbon", church going, pillars of the community make them more credible?? Consider the road trolls for example. The sightings are in the south, correct? A minister from the south says he saw one, correct? Why is he suddenly more credible than anyone else? See the review from Traveller's Rest below. This is the Bible belt and the assumption I guess is that ministers from the south don't lie. If that's the case, then ask a young southern baptist preacher if he masturbates. What happens to his credibility then? The point that I am trying to make is that from my very short experience with these type of books by these type of authors is...too much emphasis is placed on ASSUMED credibility of the witness!!! Truckers never lie, ministers never lie, and little ol' ladies in knitting circles never lie. Yeah. The big question is....do those folks see something (possibly just a glance or maybe under less than ideal lighting or under the influence of "wide-eye" pills) and perceive it to be something that is much more extravagant than it actually was??? And what's with reviewers copying reviews of other people. If it's said once, then it's probably said enuff for everyone...trav rest.

3 out of 5 stars An improvement to Strange Highways but..........2006-05-04

This book is overall better than Strange Highways. Jerry's writing skills are improving which makes this book a much easier read than S.H. before which was chock full of mis-spellings, run-on sentences, and jumbled sentences which made no sense at all. It would be really nice if Jerry continues writing for someone at Whitechapel to invest in a good proof-reader. That stuff aside, this book is a little lighter on case studies than the first yet Jerry does something that other cryptozoo persons won't do...he uses a common sense approach. For example, if that phantom panther looks like a jagaurundi, acts like a jaguarundi, then hey! Who knows...it may actually be a jaguarundi. Jerry uses a common sense approach which is refreshing. Not only that, but it seems he takes a few stabs at Loren along the way (look up sexual behavior of Bigfoot in Loren's book and then read Jerry's jab in this book). His case studies on Road Trolls was very interesting (I was expecting some beast straight from LOTR not a pegleg, hairy, homeless looking person). I bought both Strange Highways books together and after reading the first, I really wasn't eager to read the second book. However, this is much improved and as mentioned before, I think Jerry may be the only "light" of common sense out there regarding these phenomena. He should definitely continue to keep things balanced.

5 out of 5 stars This One Is A Keeper!!.......2006-04-15

This book gave me the direction that was needed to reach many down to earth conclusions and at the same time balanced the possibility that some conclusions might never be realized.

I found the content of the book down right enlightening! All too often "these" authors insult your intelligence by penning tall tales without proof. Apparently only to incite the na?ve or gloat in their ability to fool the impressible. Jerry D. Coleman does not do this in any form or at any time. Coleman reports the cases and researches the information and more times than not develops the investigation in a hands on approach giving the reader real places, names and events.

In Chapter ten titled "The Silent Woods Around Us" author Gerry Bacon lays out great fundamental techniques and experienced insight for the novice Cryptozoologist. Bacon warns the amateur or the gullible to be wary not to jump to false conclusions based on partial sightings, odors or strange noises. I must admit that much of what he touched on I have been guilty of however since reading "More Strange Highways" the hikes through the woods have opened up an entirely new experience!

This book is a keeper!

But on their way to locate the tomb of a mythical English hero while fending off shadowy new attackers who want the Boards for themselves, an offer of help comes from a surprising source. Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars The End of Part One.......2007-06-18

Jenna Solitaire, the Keeper of the Boards, has to find the last board of the elements and the key to hold them together. She and Simon find themselves directed to England and Scotland. All she has to do is figure out the location of a field she saw in a dream. A field that looks like any other. But between the Journal, the Boards, and Shalizander she manages to find the right location. But finding the location is only the beginning.

Jenna needs to keep the three Boards under control, fight off Shalizander's attempts to get her to complete the ritual of the dagger, locate the board and the key, link all the boards, awaken the Master Board, and fight off attacks from her enemies. Not so simple a task. This is Jenna's hardest battle yet with its own challenges, choices and losses. How well with Jenna survive? What losses will she have to endure? You will have to read to find out.

This book concludes the search for the Elemental Boards. There are still eight more boards to find. There are supposed to be thirteen boards (yes, 4+8=12 and not 13) but this cycle is over. This volume was much more fantasy oriented with huge amounts of magic and magical beings and less of the real world. Because of this there are fewer areas where the story does not work like in the earlier books. Although the larger series is not yet over, I am not sure if I will look at the others if they ever come out.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Top-Notch Action-Fantasy.......2007-08-07

An unabashed 5 stars for this surprisingly well-written novel that's geared toward teens but really can be read by anyone who enjoys fantasy with a great, realistic herione and lots of non-stop action and thrills.

I have to say I seriously underestimated this book because it was fairly thin, and was part of a teen series. I was blown away, however, by how realistically rendered the characters were; especially Jenna, who, to my huge relief, not only used her head to make wise and moral decisions, but also had a clever tongue to go with her admirable personality.

Besides succeeding in characterization, the author also succeeds with the story. The book is extremely well-plotted, and you get the impression that the author already knows how everything will fit together at the very end of the series. The action never let up, and the dreams Jenna kept getting were a great plot detail because not only did they introduce mysteries/questions to answer in the future, but also answered some current ones. That way, the reader is excited to find out what's going to happen, but is not frustrated by not getting rewarded for his/her efforts.

And of course, what's a fantasy book without a romantic quandry? I'm happy to say that this is tastefully done and does not get in the way of the bigger goal: getting the boards. The villian is mysterious and evil enough to be scary, and the book is not afraid to go into more adult themes.

This is the third of the series but the first I've read. I'm definitely going to check out the other three, after this edge-of-your-seat read. It was everything I was looking for in a book, with something extra besides: a heroine that's cool, calm, and collected, and understands that there needs to be a balance between the head and the heart. What a breath of fresh air that was.

2 out of 5 stars A Little Better.......2007-06-18

Jenna Solitaire has traveled to Pompeii with Simon Monk to try and retrieve the Board of Fire. The board was hidden by one of Jenna's ancestors in Mount Vesuvius. This action caused the volcano to erupt and destroy ancient Pompeii. The ghosts of those killed in the eruption are still wandering the island and many have taken to inhabit the local dogs. It turns out that Jenna's great-grandmother had a lover in the area before she journeyed to America. This old lover, once a priest, is still alive. He offers Jenna help in controlling the boards.

After Simon tries to find out more about his own past things begin to get sticky. But all things lead to Jenna having to go into the volcano and retrieve the board. Unfortunately an old prophesy says that when the board is removed, the volcano will erupt again thus destroying the area. How can Jenna get the board? How much help will her great-grandmother's lover be? What secrets will Simon learn about his own past? Will the forces arranged against Jenna be able to triumph? You will have to read to find out.

This one was a little better than the first two although there were some glaring continuity problems at the start. This is the first volume to mention needing a connection for the stolen Blackberry to work (still no mention of charging without a charger or how it could hook to European power outlets). At one point Jenna is saved by meeting the conditions of a prophecy. Later we find out those conditions were not met. How did she survive? Bad writing. It is also becoming clear that this four-book series is intended to be part of a larger work. A little better than the first two and I would put it at about 2 ½ stars.

5 out of 5 stars Completely Amazing.......2007-03-13

I have read thousands of books so far in my life and spent several years recently as a bookseller... and still there are some books that just grip me and I can't let go of them. This series was like that for me.
This series is slated towards teens and I am definitely not in that age group, and I still love this series! I had to buy it for myself after reading the first one in advanced reader form (booksellers get these). I waited for the rest of the series and it was well worth the wait!
There are few books I read that have such a blend of humor, action, struggle, magic, wonder, and destiny. You can read this as lightly or seriously as you choose.
Jenna has taken me on a journey I wouldn't have had otherwise, and I wouldn't change that for anything!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent series.......2007-01-22

Both my daughter and I loved the series. There is action, adventure, archaeology and mystery all rolled into one. We've read all four and can't wait for the next installment.

Book Description

My name is Jenna Solitaire and everything I thought I knew about myself, my family, and my future is wrong. My life is not my own. It never has been. I just didn't know it-until now...After the death of her grandfather, nineteen-year-old Jenna Solitaire finds an ancient wooden board hidden away in the attic of his house. Scorched by fire and covered in mysterious symbols, the board fascinates her-and scares her-at the same time. As does Simon Monk, the handsome stranger who has come into her life, claiming to know about the board. Even more frightening is the voice whispering in Jenna's head, calling her "Keeper." Does Jenna have power over the winds, as Simon claims? Is she truly the Daughter of Destiny?

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars When the Wind Blows; for Fans of Charmed.......2007-04-11

Jenna Solitaire is the author and star of this novel. With the recent death of her grandfather, Jenna has really taken on her name. But at her grandfather's funeral things begin to change drastically for Jenna. There is a stalker at the funeral. Then her local priest introduces her to a former priest named Simon. Simon has made a study of Jenna's family line. There has always been one woman in each generation. That woman becomes the Keeper. Jenna is now the Keeper although she has never learned anything about it. Then she finds a spirit board in the attic and jokingly tries to contact her dead family. Unknowingly she awakens the board which is known as the Board of the Winds. Winds begin to blow.

Things really begin to get out of control quickly. While Jenna may be the Keeper, there are other forces out to get and control the Board. Simon wants to help Jenna. Jenna is the final branch in her family tree and known as the Daughter of Destiny. It will fall to her to find all of the Boards like the one she already has. Soon Jenna has to make some choices about her life as she, Simon, her friends, and her entire town become endangered by the awakened power of the Board and the evil people out to control it. Can Jenna gain control of the Board without it controlling her? Can she save those she cares about? Finally, will she be able to survive?

This is the first in the Daughter of Destiny series and, so far, the best of the three I have read. So far all of the books have glaring flaws throughout. In this one Jenna acquires the journal of the Keepers. For thousands of years the Keepers have added their stories to the journal. Never mind that they somehow all fit in one small volume or that books like this did not exist when the first Keeper wrote in it. While it is possible the book is magic so that it can hold all the information there is no hint that it has changed forms through the millennia. It would seem the author is a bigger fan of Charmed (everything in one simple book) than of Buffy (libraries full of information). I had better hopes for this but having read further into the series I have to say it has a similar lack of sense as Charmed. I would not recommend this unless you really like Charmed.

5 out of 5 stars I was really surprised .. .. .. .........2007-03-08

.. .. at how good this series turned out to be. There are 4 books so far: Keeper of the Winds, Keeper of the Waters, Keeper of the Flames and Keeper of the Earth. The author's use of magic isn't over the top and she doesn't rely on it to carry the story. The anthropologist and historian in me really was fascinated with the detail in each book. I didn't stop reading until I'd had all four books read. I would definitely recommend this book series to any teenager or young adult.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome series.......2006-12-17

I absolutly love this series and I've read a lot of books. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone. It's the young adult version of Radiers of the Lost Ark, with a female hero! Something that's not very popular in these HarryPotter-esque days. I love this book and I'm sure you will too.

4 out of 5 stars This may be going somewhere.......2006-11-07

The Daughter of Destiny series starts out well, if not wonderful. While I'm not chomping at the bit to get to the next book, I am curious as to where the author will take things. The characters are fairly 2-dimensional, but they are likeable and have room to grow (hopefully) in the books to follow. The storyline is interesting, though far from novel. I gave four stars instead of three because the first book in a series is often lacking even if the series itself is wonderful- hopefully Daughter of Destiny fits this mold.

2 out of 5 stars The Next Quest.......2007-04-11

Jenna has gained some control of the Board of the Winds and has set off with Simon to find the Board of Waters which seems to be somewhere near Jerusalem. The two are Joined by a guide who is a member of the Knights Templar. Jenna is immediately captivated by the handsome guide. By using the resources of the Knights, Jenna and company begin to narrow down their search. But research can not replace Jenna's connection to the Boards and her feelings point her in the right direction. Meanwhile, Jenna's opponents are manipulating events from behind the scenes in the hopes of gaining the Boards for themselves.

But nothing is easy. Simon and the guide keep fighting about Jenna. Desire and jealousy seem to be at the heart of the fights. Eventually the Trio narrow down the search (with a little help from Jenna's friends back in the States) and they set off to get the second Board. Truths are discovered and battles fought. Jenna continues to gain mastery of the first board although it keeps trying to gain control of her. Can she find the second Board, survive the plots against her, and work out things between Simon and the guide?

Right at the start of the book Jenna and Simon arrive in Israel. There they are met by their guide before going through customs. Simon even makes a comment about trying to find customs. With Israeli airport security in the news so much after 9/11 (because theirs is so tight) I found it hard to take this story seriously right from the start. These problems continue through the book almost to the end. The second Board has been hidden for millennia in a spot open to the air that archeologist are constantly searching. How they missed something that wasn't actually hidden is a mystery. I had thought this series would appeal to fans of Charmed but this book is more like Indian Jones (with shameless plugs actually in the text). Some of the revelations were interesting but did not make up for the poor plotting and research.

Both my daughter and I loved the series. There is action, adventure, archaeology and mystery all rolled into one. We've read all four and can't wait for the next installment.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!.......2006-05-08

Jenna Solitaire is the most unique series yet!!! I just love how Jenna(the author not the main character) give the Boards a certain liveliness by express their personalities. Anyway, I definitely recommend this new series. I think this is the best series yet that come out and there should be more series like this.

5 out of 5 stars This book is GGGGRRREEAATT!.......2006-04-16

Okay, so this book shows alot more depth then the last one, although the last one was a bit more lighter, this one shows more of what jenna can do. she has really master the board of the winds, but she hasn't mastered her judgement of character! some spots in the book will send chills down your spine! and the next book is going to have even more spooky parts in it... well i can't wait for the next installment! all and all a really good read!

This book is confusing to me all I get about the book is that, The boys Mom died and his Dad lives kinda far away, and the Dad sends him letters and the boy snifs them. His leg also got crushed by a rock. I recomend this book.

Life has been difficult for Jamie Park since his mother died. While he finds some level of comfort running on his track team, the absence of his workaholic scientist father only makes life more complicated. Then one day Aunt Louise, a relative whom Jamie has never heard of, invites him to spend the entire summer with her in her isolated mountain home in the Pacific Northwest. Jamie accepts the offer, and his adventure of a lifetime officially begins.

Upon his arrival, he quickly finds out that life is going to be quite different. Louise's dwelling place is a one-room cabin with no plumbing or electricity. Despite this, Jamie excitedly listens to his aunt's nature and survival lessons. A number of peculiar events soon transpire, causing Jamie to be conscientious of an alliance he feels with a neighboring wolf pack. He then learns the truth behind the visit and a major secret about his family. Will Jamie return home, or will he stay with his aunt?

If I were Jamie, I would have decided to come home because I would have missed my family and friends. If you enjoy reading books with animals and a plot containing elements of mystery, be sure to read BLUE WOLF to find out what happens to Jamie and his family.

Amazing book.....and about the lovliest author you can find...she was my school librarian in 7th grade and i got to read and edit the book sometimes. The suspense is perfect and the predictibality (is that a word?) is at the right level. You don't know whats gonna happen next, but she doesnt confuse you with too many surprises. great, cant wait to read the next two in the trilogy!
