      Book Description

In this compelling volume, distinguished educators tackle a frequently asked question about multicultural education: How do I teach about racial and cultural diversity if all my students are white? The authors propose seven learning themes to help young white children resist messages of racism and build identity and skills for thriving in a multicultural country and world. The text includes strategies, resources, and classroom examples for implementing the learning themes in early childhood settings.

Taking multicultural education to a new level, this practical guide:
      * Places the development of white children's racial identity in the context of the historical construction of "whiteness" and racism in America.
      * Suggests strategies for nurturing a new white identity as the starting place for anti-bias/multicultural work with children.
      * Offers ways to expand children's interests and concerns beyond their immediate world to instill a sense of caring and connection toward people different from them and to encourage seeing themselves as agents of change.
      * Includes activities for families and staff, reflection questions, a review of white anti-racism activists, lists of suggested children's books, and organizational and website resources.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars teaching diversity.......2007-09-19

While the US is increasingly heterogeneous ethnically, this is not necessarily true in every community or school. The authors address the issue of those schools, public or private, where all (or effectively all) the students are white. How then to teach about a diverse broader society?

The book also looks specifically at the makeup of private schools. Many upper and middle class families have put their children into these schools. Where the ethnicity tends to be more white than in the public schools, at least in the large metropolitan areas. Perhaps as a counterweight to oft-repeated murmurings that some of these private schools have prospered due to white flight, the book's studies are especially valuable.

The text does not confine itself to offering suggestions strictly for diversity in ethnic or racial grounds. Differing religious traditions and sensitivity for those is also discussed. Examples include children of Jehovah's Winess families, who typically don't celebrate holidays or birthdays. Very easy for other students to misunderstand and mock.

        Book Description

In this important book, Norm Fruchter argues that our national failure to carry out the Brown mandate has produced segregated urban school systems that fail poor students of color. Drawing on a rich array of research and personal experience, he examines why urban districts have failed and what must be done to transform our city schools. He identifies urban districts as the key actors in this transformation and profiles three school districts that have achieved significant success in closing the achievement gap. He also identifies grassroots community organizing as a critical lever for provoking and supporting meaningful change in schools.

              Book Description

In this illuminating activity book, kids delve into the rich history of space exploration, where telescopes, satellites, probes, landers, and human missions lead to amazing discoveries. Tracking astronomers' recent progress—including the discovery of 2003 UB313, what some are calling the tenth planet in the solar system—kids explore the planets and other celestial bodies for themselves through activities such as "walking" from the sun to Pluto or creating their own reentry vehicle to safely return an egg to Earth's surface. With biographies of more than 20 space pioneers, specific mission details, a 20-page field guide to the solar system, and plenty of suggestions for further research, this is the ultimate guidebook to exploring the solar system.

              5 out of 5 stars Solar System Book-Space Info.......2006-08-19

I bought this for my 6 yr. daughter. She's very interested in Space. It's a good quality book (no cheap paper). It has a lot of information from the past. First attempt into space they sent a dog. My daughter is very smart and understands what she is reading (or what I help her read). I would say it's more for 8 yrs and up (but perfect for a younger mature child). It has original pictures (not cartoon drawings) and is very educational for the whole family (if you are interested in learning about space). I recommend it for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome choice for our star-crazy young ones!.......2006-04-01

In true Mary Kay Carson fashion, Exploring the Solar System : A History with 22 Activities isn't dumbed down even the slightest. Carson respects children and seems to grasp well what they can be expected to understand - which is often more than what they are credited with. As a result, her text is thorough and frank and can easily be read to would-be astronauts as young as 4 or 5 years. And the illustrative photos are stunning, the perfect foil for the text in capturing the imagination. From interviews with well-regarded scientists (including explanations of how they themselves became interested in studying space) to easy-to-execute activities to a very thorough timeline of space exploration, Carson has once again thought of everything for engaging our own little scientists. I simply cannot recommend this book enough.
