Book Description

The Perfect Storm on the prairie, Storm Warning is a compulsively readable account of one of the most terrible tornadoes in history -- and the extraordinary people who kept it from becoming the deadliest.

May 3, 1999, is a day that Oklahomans will never forget. By the time the sun set over a ravaged plain, some 71 tornadoes had claimed 11,000 homes and businesses and caused a billion dollars in damages. One of them was a mile-wide monster of incredible power, the fiercest F5 twister to hit a metropolitan area, and whose 300 mph winds were the fastest ever recorded on the planet.

Veteran journalist Nancy Mathis draws on numerous interviews to weave the story of those few terrifying hours that irrevocably changed the lives of many Oklahomans. Storm Warning features Kara Wiese, who fought to save her son from the fatal winds, and Charlie Cusack, who followed the tornado's progress on television until it came knocking on his front door. Amazingly, only thirty-eight people perished at the hands of the Oklahoma F5. Many lives were saved by the efforts of professionals such as Ted Fujita, the creator of the Fujita Scale (dubbed "Mr. Tornado" for his relentless pursuit to unravel a twister's mysteries); the oft-criticized but dogged government meteorologists; and Gary England, a resourceful TV weatherman whose tireless efforts prepared hundreds of people in the tornado's path. Storm Warning alternates between personal stories and the history of the struggle to understand this bewildering force of Mother Nature, creating a nail-biting, captivating look at surviving the fury from the skies.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping Tale of our Killer Storms.......2007-06-17

Tornadoes are the most powerful storms known, with an F5 monster reaching 300 mph winds. Fortunately they are far smaller than hurricanes and so do not usually cause the extensive damage that hurricanes can. The localized damage is often nearly total!

Nancy Mathis in her book "Storm Warning: The Story of a Killer Tornado" chronicles the story of one F5 tornado in particular, the one that struck Oklahoma City in early May of 1999. She provides much historical background, including the story of Ted Fujita, who survived World War II in Japan by a series of apparently random events to produce the Fujita scale to to aid in the understanding and prediction of tornadoes. Another important player, Gary England, pioneered tornado prediction when the United States Weather Service was unable to do so. Numerous people worked on developing the ability to give at least several minutes warning of an approaching storm. In the case of the Oklahoma City storm of May 3, 1999, this paid off big time, with many fewer fatalities than would have happened otherwise.

Nancy Mathis tells this story with great skill. Before the reader is through they develop a wide respect for the obsessional people (including storm chasers) who have continued to develop an understanding of the formidable storms. The reader also begins to understand the power and fascination of these nearly unique monsters of the American Great Plains, where 80% of all tornadoes develop.

I have seen the result of the passage of a weak tornado in Florida (in fact I crossed its path just an hour before it went through). Even though the storm skimmed the treetops, it dropped several long-leaf pines into the roofs of apartment complexes. Luckily no one was hurt, but it was close. These are not storms with which to trifle!

This is a great summery of tornado research and history, plus a great description of a particularly savage storm. If you live anywhere were tornadoes can strike (the whole United States, but especially the Midwest), you should read this book!

5 out of 5 stars compelling book about tornadoes.......2007-05-18

This was a book i could not put down, despite the author's letting us know right from the beginning who lived, who died, and how big the killer tornado was. Mathis' description of the history of weather forecasting was fascinating, and her summary of the science of weather (and tornadoes in particular) was easy to understand and compelling. Her recommendations on how to survive a tornado are vital for anyone who lives in "tornado alley" as well as for people who live in areas rarely visited by these potential killers. I recommend this book to anyone interested in weather and its effects on people.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book on Tornados.......2007-05-13

Nancy is a fantastic author and did a great job with this book. An enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars Like an IMAX movie in hardcover.......2007-05-01

Just finished reading Nancy Mathis's Storm Warning in one sitting. Having grown up in Oklahoma and spent more than two decades as an airline pilot, I thought I knew a thing or two about hook echos, doppler radar and microbursts. Mathis nails these down--making the science interesting and easy to understand. But she also tells the story of this terrible twister in a way that puts the reader right in the middle of the action. And that is scary, especially if you happen to be reading Storm Warning during a blustery spring storm, as I did. I could picture the eerie green sky as the storm chasers sped across the plains and smell the dank culvert where victims perished. The blow-by-blow description of the destruction of a two story house in 20-25 seconds is as vivid and chilling as anything I've ever read. Do yourself a favor though: read it on a quiet sunny day with calm winds.

5 out of 5 stars A Riveting Read.......2007-05-01

Ok, so who knew that a book about tornado forcasting could make me tearful at its ending. It is a tribute to the author's ability to thread the stories of the lives so affected by these events through, in and around the science that makes this book read like wonderful fiction while carrying the burden of informing like nonfiction. There are two layers of the human element here, the victims of the killer storms, some of whom heal and many who don't, but the other story is of the men who pursued the science of forcasting, both for the love of the science itself, and for the advancement of the common good. The people I came to know in this book will be with me for a long time. This is, simply stated, a great read.

5 out of 5 stars Addiction began between 2 covers.......2005-05-27

Being one of the first of Lackey's books to pick up, I immediately became facinated by her explaination of life, religion, and society. This paticular novel started me on a quest to read the following books in the trilogy, which were not a disappointment. Her medium of fantasy certainly engages the reader to explore their own world in a different light, and to open up their minds to appreciate the differences in their own existence. I completely enjoyed this book, and would recommend it to anyone with the slight interest in the fantasy genre.

4 out of 5 stars Karsites in Valdemar!.......2003-12-02

I loved this book--especially the story line with Karel. I loved the fact that Misty has created a usefulness for the Blues and has developed their part in the Collegium and society as whole. Alos, Misty did a great job developing the entire Karsite side. Be patient with the Empire and stranded general plot lines: It takes time to set up an epic. However . . . Misty could have done a better job with the residents in Haven. The native characters' development has suffered to allow the ambassadors to be developed. This lack of continuing character development for the Palace Residents disconnects the reader from the story in many places.

Beware, ladies: Have that box of tissue ready, because you'll end up needing it when you least expect it. Misty always has a good cry in her books, and this one doesn't disappoint in that arena.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing change.......2002-11-11

Karse and Valdemar have long been enemies, each hating the other without ever really knowing anything about how each truly operates. Since Ancar of Hardorn's attempted invasions of each country, an uneasy alliance has been formed. Now Ancar is dead and his conquests along with him, but a new and more dangerous enemy has emerged: the mysterious and powerful Eastern Empire. Karse and Valdemar must decide what exactly their alliance entails.

The Son of the Sun, Solaris, High Priestess of Karse, sends an envoy consisting of Ulrich, a black-robe priest, and his secretary, Karal, to Valdemar to negotiate the terms of the alliance.

While the two countries work together to try to determine a way to defend against the Eastern Empire, a new and deadlier threat makes itself known, one so ancient and powerful that it may be impossible to stop...

"Storm Warning" is the first book in Mercedes Lackey's Mage Storms Trilogy. I absolutely loved this book. It was a refreshing change after reading the Mage Winds Trilogy. The story seemed much more about the characters than about the events, which really gave it a more human feel. Similar to Mage Winds, it had alternating perspectives, which made me want to keep reading.

The characters, as always, were wonderful to read about, particularly Karal. He is one of the most remarkable Lackey characters I have encountered yet (and this was my fifteenth Valdemar book). I absolutely loved him. He was an extremely compassionate, caring, sensitive individual, almost on the same level as Talia of the Arrows Trilogy. I was able to feel every step of his journey as if I were there with him. An'desha developed nicely, and I'm anxious to see what will become of him.

It was also nice to see enemies that were entirely human as opposed to insanely fanatic mages bent on revenge. Charliss wasn't completely without honor, and Tremane was a decent human being who just happened to be born an Imperial.

I also enjoyed learning the Karsite perspective. It was interesting to look at Valdemar through the eyes of its enemy and to see Karse painted as something other than barbaric.

Bottom Line: An amazing story with a delightful lead character. A must-read for any Valdemar fan, but make sure you read Mage Winds first.

3 out of 5 stars Ummmmmmmmm???.......2002-04-19

I've read ALL of Mercedes Lackey's Valedemar series, and she's running seriously short of ideas.
I bought this book because I was interested--the others were decent and fairly interesting, and so I thought I'd try this one. I now think it should stand as the classic example of why authors shouldn't make serieses run on too long.
This book is four hundred and twenty-eight pages long, and everything that happens could be contained in about ten. We struggle through Karal feeling lost and lonely, An'desha feeling put upon and self-pitying, and everyone realizing that magic isn't the answer to everything. It gets so repetitive at the end that I was extremely tempted to just shove it in a corner of my bookshelf with the other two books in the series and not finish any of them, and I almost ALWAYS finish books, unless they're ghastly. This one came pretty close.
If you want to start out with Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series, read The Heralds of Valdemar (ARROWS OF THE QUEEN, ARROW'S FLIGHT, ARROW'S FALL) and Vows and Honor (THE OATHBOUND, OATHBREAKERS, OATHBLOOD) first. If you've read all her Valdemar books, read this just to fill in on what happens, but don't waste your money buying it.

And my review:

Dinah McCall (who also writes as Sharon Sala) is a hit-or-miss author. For me, I often find her more often a miss than a hit. But this one was a hit for me.

I had a few complaints (things that would normally make me stop reading, but this book was interesting enough that I kept going). For instance, we have to wait a long time before the hero and heroine meet. Almost a third of the book goes by before that happens. Also, we don't get to meet either the hero or the heroine for much of the beginning of the book. Normally, I'd stop reading, but the suspense storyline was original and interesting enough to keep me going.

I agree with other reviewers, the whole subplot involving the fishing cabin was rather unnecessary, and I think the book would have been better off if that part had been cut. It came across as filler, and didn't do much to move the story along. The romance was a bit rushed, and it felt more like they were together because of convenience and great sex and not much else.

And my last complaint: there's a part where a man is having to raise his voice to be heard over loud music. It's written that he raises his voice a couple of octaves to be heard. Well, anyone who's studied music knows that octaves refer to the pitch of a note, not the volume of it. So if the man had raised his voice two octaves, he would have sounded like a character from Alvin and the Chipmunks, all high-pitched in falsetto. He should have raised his voice a few DECIBELS, not octaves. I know I'm nitpicking, but that really bothered me (kind of like when people misuse the words "lay" and "lie"). But that's really the fault of poor editing--they're supposed to catch these things.

After reading all that, you'd think I hate this book, but I didn't. I really liked the idea of someone being able to use hypnosis to commit murder. I felt that this was a really original idea, and it was this plot that kept me reading. Yes, it requires some suspension of belief, but this is fiction. While this wasn't a "couldn't put it down" book, it was worth my time to read it. It doesn't really hit the mark as a romance novel, but for suspense, it delivered. However, I recommend trying to borrow this one, as it's not a keeper or a book to keep you up reading all night.

5 out of 5 stars Storm Warning.......2007-03-09

Book arrived in good shape. Story was engaging and well written. I love Dinah Mccall. She combines romance and intrigue well.

3 out of 5 stars Soapy.......2006-08-15

It is like playing hooky from work; watching soap opera all afternoon long. The characters are so emotional especially the two main ones that the story which has a good plot ends up being non-believable. Sullivan seems to be written with split personality; so is Ginny. The path of the tale is interesting but the narration in regards to each role lacks conviction. And, for an FBI agent, Sullivan is very soft-hearted - with tears in his eyes and all - that sometimes his dialogues appear to be spoken from a female's point of view. The person behind all the killing is not hard to determine even though the writer tries her best to sway her readers from the real killer a few times; that part is fun.

3 out of 5 stars Though parts are predictable, mystery abounds.......2006-01-04

St. Louis reported Ginny Shapiro finds that she is the only member of an exclusive study left alive. The other six have either died in an accident or were murdered, including her good friend Georgia, a nun who started to put the pieces together before dying under mysterious circumstances. The only common thread in the deaths is the fact that each received a mysterious phone call prior to doing the deed.

Georgia shared this information with her childhood friend, Sullivan Dean, an FBI agent, but he receives the info too late. He tracks down Ginny, determined to keep her alive since he was not there for Georgia. Soon he and Ginny are embroiled in a passionate relationship, while he and his FBI pals try to protect her in a safe house.

Meanwhile, Nobel Prize-winner Dr. Emile Karnoff is traveling the world using his revolutionary hypnosis technique to cure gravely ill patients. He manages to ignore the problems of his very ill son, and his overly neat wife with disastrous results.

While parts of the book are totally predictable, just when you are convinced you know who the bad guy is, something happens to change your opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Answer The Phone!.......2005-06-07

Dinah McCall serves up a thriller with a little different beat. STORM WARNING has the reader wondering if this could really happen and lets your imagination take over from there, similar to John Saul's GUARDIAN.

Seven girls who attended a gifted class when they were very young in 1979 are suddenly committing suicide with no warning and under very bizarre circumstances - each receive a phone call and become entranced and kill themselves. When Ginny Shapirio, an investigative reporter, realizes she's the only one left from this class, she begins to wonder. She receives a letter of warning from Sister Mary Theresa (her best friend) warning her not to answer the phone. Sister Mary Theresa has linked their classmates' deaths to a phone call right before their demise. However, Sister Mary Theresa dies before the letter is received and Ginny flees to try to save herself - but from what or whom she's not certain.

FBI agent Sullivan Dean, finds Ginny, and tries to help. It's a convoluted chain of friendships that gets Dean involved, but once you figure that out, you understand his drive. Ginny and Dean strive to figure out why these suicides happened, and what can be done to stop the "trigger" from setting off Ginny.

Character development is excellent. McCall creates a vibrant victim in Ginny - she's smart, attractive, and a strong female. Dean is also robust and the perfect match to compliment Ginny. Thrown in is a Nobel-winning doctor (Emile Karnoff) who is a bit eccentric but believes in his theory of using hypnosis to heal. Emile comes with his crazy son and doting wife (she thrives on keeping everything tidy).

The plot line is a bit farfetched, but fun. To spice up the thriller side of the story, a good dose of romance is tossed in for good measure. STORM WARNING is a perfect blend of thriller and romance. Dinah McCall (AKA Sharon Sala) is definitely an author to peruse. I've enjoyed all of her books that I've read to date and STORM WARNING is at the top of that list!

2 out of 5 stars What a difference 22 years makes..........2006-08-30

I am a huge Nora Roberts fan, but it is evident in these early works what a difference 22 years of writing has made for her.
These are so-so short stories that show hints of her current style without the polish.
Risky Business and The Welcoming were okay - nothing special - but could have used a little more character development. Okay as a short stories go.
Storm Warning was definitely not her best effort and could have used about 100 pages of character development to explain the history of the two lead characters - especially the male. (Maybe his character was indicative of the time it was written in and the style used back in 1984.)
All in all an interesting look at her early efforts/style, but her more current works are much better.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty decent .......2006-08-26

This 3 in 1 book by Nora Roberts is the 2006 edition. The first and the third stories are the best. The second one is a little slow, but overall, it is worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars A collection of 3 almost 2 decades old mystery/romances........2006-08-14

I have been reading Nora Roberts and her alter ego J.D. Robb for sometime but never saw these three stories before. I liked the first one okay, felt the second had issues - especially the "hero", and loved the third one.

Each of the stories has the common element of danger thus the collection's title "Dangerous". In "Risky Business" Liz Palmer is a single mom who lives in Cozumel, Mexico and runs a dive shop and dive/fishing/tour boat rental business. She has been there ten years and is an expert at what she does. She has employees - some more transient than others. As she takes some tourists on a glass bottom boat outing, she is upset that one of her employees of only a few weeks, Jerry Sharpe, has not shown up to help her. However, as they tour in the boat gasps and scream suddenly come from the group as Liz sees Jerry's dead body weighed down by an anchor. The police question Liz over and over but she doesn't really know anything and then Joshua Sharpe, attorney from Philadelphia and Jerry's identical twin brother, shows up and also quizzes her. As Joshua and Liz work to find Jerry's killer and what he was up to, an attraction grows. My problem with this story was that Joshua was not as much romantic as many of Ms. Roberts' other heroes. Their romance felt a little forced. But overall a fun read.

My least favorite was "Storm Warning" which is a whodunit like the movie "Clue". While Autumn and her Aunt Tabby were wonderfully fleshed out characters, Lucas seemed way too mean to Autumn and too mysterious and shallow. The mystery was fun though.

Finally my favorite, "The Welcoming" was very sweet and touching for the romance and also exciting for the mystery/suspense so I won't tell anymore here except to say if you haven't read this one, you will enjoy it!

2 out of 5 stars Not for die hard fans!.......2003-11-18

I gave this book two stars - one for Risky Business and one for The Welcoming - they are typical stories written by my favorite author. Predictable, yes, but enjoyable. Storm Warning made me mad. I wish I had not spent the time trying to figure it out, It made no sense! Do not buy this book. Go check it out at the library and read the first and last story, but skip Storm Warning!

3 out of 5 stars First story great....and that's where it ends........2003-07-19

I can't beleive I actually found something written by Nora that I did not like. The first story in this collection is excellent and is worth purchasing the book for. However, the second story is horrible and the male character is just a major creep. I almost didn't finish it. The third story is OK, and worth your time to read, just not her best. I LOVE Nora, but that second story just didn't cut it. If this is your first Nora book - PLEASE go get something else by her - anything - don't let this one turn you off to her. I feel guilty writing this!!! Sorry Nora!

4 out of 5 stars A Country Western Song and Clue Combined.......2005-04-06

The one thing that Storm Warning does and does well is show the audience what Nora Roberts has in store for her readers in the future with her mystery novels. I'm not entirely sure if Roberts is better at writing romance or mystery stories, but I do know that I enjoy both genres written by her.

Autumn Gallegher goes to her aunt's B & B for a visit only to find a handful of eccentric guests and an ex-boyfriend with whom she is still madly in love even if she refuses to acknowledge that fact. Several of her aunt's guests are there on a working vacation. Lucas, her ex-love interest, is finishing a screenplay and the producer and lead actress are both on hand in case he needs their input. This aspect seemed like a strange idea, but what the heck, it's Roberts' story, so I just followed along and didn't question that too much since these characters were fun and added spice to the story line.

When one of the guests is killed, Autumn takes it upon herself to figure out "who dun it"! Seems as if all of the guests were being blackmailed by this despicable excuse for a human. Even though I enjoyed this tale, it really reminded me of playing the game "Clue". Who committed the murder and what was the murder weapon of choice seemed to be the prevalent questions in this story. The butler did it in the library with a knife - oh, sorry, there is no butler in this story, I just got carried away for a moment.

Ok, so maybe it wasn't that black and white, after all Nora Roberts had to weave the romantic side of the story into the plot. This was the part that played like a country western song. He did her wrong but she never stopped lovin' him. He says he's sorry and wants her back and she is willing to begin where they left off until... Ah, then Roberts jumps back to the game of "Clue" as the murderer decides that Autumn may know the identity of the killer and is determined to eliminate her as well.

Oh, did I forget to mention that while all of this is going on at this remote bed and breakfast, a huge thunderstorm has pounded the inn, all power is knocked out, and the road is washed away so no one can escape or summon the sheriff. I've always wanted to own a bed and breakfast resort away from town in a semi-isolated area and after reading this story, I've realized that there are several reasons that this wouldn't be a good idea. While I was enjoying this tale, I could perfectly imagine the setting as I've dreamed of this inn for many years and Nora Roberts brings about a vivid mental image.

This is actually a fun book and is a quick read. It will only take a few hours to get through this one and will have you reading and playing along with Autumn to find the identity of the real killer.

4 out of 5 stars Romantic Suspense from Nora Roberts.......2004-01-19

A young woman photographer arrives at her aunt's inn where she finds an interesting assortment of guests. What she didn't count on, though, was that one of them would be a writer that she had an affair with two years ago. Although believes she is finally over him, seeing him proves to be different for her now. Before too long there are some rather odd occurrences and then a guest is found dead during a raging storm. Then it is discovered that the dead woman has blackmailed all of the guests at one time and one of them has sought the ultimate revenge against her. All the while the former lovers feelings for one another are renewed and reciprocated, although the young woman begins to fear that her former lover is guilty.

An early book by one of my favorite romance authors, this is an early example of the romantic suspense genre Ms. Roberts is well known for today.

4 out of 5 stars Nora's Tip Of The Hat To Agatha Christie.......2002-03-07

Photographer Autumn Gallagher is visiting Aunt Tabby at her inn when a murder occurs. A huge storm knocks out the power and the police can't come right away. Did one of the guests commit the crime - and does Autumn have a picture of the murderer? Fun Nora version of the classic Agatha Christie mystery.
Excerpt from the back of the book:
"One of the guests at the inn was a murderer! Someone was dead and many had motives-including the mysterious Lucas McLean. Could the man Autumn Gallagher once had loved be a coldhearted killer? Lucas had committed a crime in the past-he'd hurt Autumn and lost her love. Now he was her number one suspect for murder. Should she follow her head...or her heart?"

4 out of 5 stars Great Navy Adventure.......2003-08-02

This is truly a classic tale of heroics, patriotism, adventure, and even romance. It is great. Jack Higgins has done it once again with this novel. I, myself, have only read the Readers Digest condensed novel, but even it was excellent. I have always been looking for a great Navy adventure, I think I have found just that. I would recommend this book to everybody and anybody, because it has something for every one. Carey Reeve is a great main character, and the action scenes are quite suspenseful.

3 out of 5 stars Did Not Hold My Attention.......2002-04-08

I have always liked this author; I can always count on him for a good story. I was a little disappointed in this effort. Maybe it is because of the high hopes I had after reading some of his other works, but this book just did not hold my attention. He did a good job with an interesting story, one that I think he had to work more on due to it getting away from his standard fair. The characters drive this book and are done well. I guess I was not looking for a sea story and that is what this book is.

5 out of 5 stars A great sea story.......2000-08-31

This is a reprint of a novel originally published in 1976. The story is set in August-September 1944. A group of German naval officers and seamen, stranded in Brazil, steal the aged 3-masted barkentine "Deutschland" and, using false Swedish papers, set out on a voyage from Belem, Brazil, in an attempt to reach Germany. They have unexpected passengers - a group of five German nuns from a nursing order attempting to return home. Their biggest danger is the weather as storms batter the sailing vessel (they neglected the fact that September is the peak season for Atlantic hurricanes). The voyage becomes an epic battle against the elements, and leads to heroism, sacrifice, tragedy, and unexpected compassion. I personally believe that this is one of Higgin's best novels, if not the best. There are some intertwined plots as events come together to reach a final climax to the story.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Sea Story with Plausible Characters........2000-08-08

As a fan of naval adventure fiction, I usually follow the Forester, Obrian, Kent novels of nautical derring-do in the Age of Sail. Thus the jacket blurb on this Higgins book attracted me. I was not disappointed. Briefly, the book involves the fates of passengers and crew of a 19th century three-masted barkentine as it tries to return German nationals from Brazil to the homeland as Germany faces certain defeat. It's a five-thousand mile journey to round the Shetlands to enter the Skageraak and head for home. The Atlantic is controlled by the British and American fleets. This danger, however, is not the main enemy, which is the sea and the weather. The amazing seamanship exercised just to hold the creaking 60-year old vessel together in the teeth of terrible storms may stretch credulity; however the nautical exploits are convincingly described and it's obvious that Higgins knows his naval details down to the way in which sails had to be reefed, masts lashed, hulls braced, etc. The passengers include an admirable collection of nuns who must abandon the order in Brazil due to the fact that Brazil has just become a formal ally of the United Nations effort to defeat the Nazi regime. The stifled romance between a wavering novitiate nun and a strongly etched member of the ship's crew is well drawn, not too maudlin and deftly handled. So too are the British and American characters on a remote island in the Hebrides, who are to become entangled in the fate of the imperiled _Deutschland_. Even the captured U-Boat commander Gericke avoids the usual black and white "German = Nazi" stereotyping.

I would have liked to see the subsequent fate of the surviving main characters brought to light. Any screenplay based on this novel (which is a natural for the cinema) should try to tie up these loose ends.

Highly recommended.

Living On The Earth is a wonderful book, whether you are just reading it for fun, or using it as a guide for daily life. The reader feels a strong connection to the author, who we get a good picture of through her handwritten antecdotes. I picked up my mother's copy a few years ago, and I have been looking for my own copy ever since- I am thrilled that someone finally reprinted this book!

4 out of 5 stars 1st Eighth Doctor Audio Drama.......2006-08-10

This is the 16th installment of Big Finish's monthly Doctor Who audio dramas, however it is the first to feature Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor. The audio dramas seem to exist in a parallel universe to the Eighth Doctor Adventure books published by BBC books, however I'm sure some very smart people have figured out how both can exist, somehow. This audio drama is set in 1930 and introduces a new Companion, Charley Pollard, voiced by India Fisher. Charley only exists in the audio dramas.

The voice actors are excellent, however since I read several years worth of Eighth Doctor Adventures before I heard this audio drama, it took me awhile to wrap my head around the idea that all I had read previously didn't exist.

Fans of mystery, crime, fantasy, and horror will love this collection of stories by internationally acclaimed mystery writer Nancy Pickard. From a never-before-published story sure to thrill readers to eight other award-winning cautionary tales, these nine stories are linked by signs of foreboding, paths that lead to unexpected places, and the craftiness of human nature-showing that men and women, when faced with the subtle portents of disaster, may ignore warnings at their own peril.
