Book Description

Scientific Style and Format: the CBE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers, Sixth Edition, is a detailed and authoritative manual recommending both general and scientific publication styles and formats for journals, books, and other forms of publication. It covers all sciences, not just biology and the medical sciences, and both American and British preferences are recognised. Every author of a scientific paper or book will profit from this essential resource. Editors and publishers engaged in the sciences, students in the sciences, and translators of scientific papers destined for English-language publication will also find this manual an invaluable resource. It is far more up-to-date, more specific, more authoritative, and easier to use than any other reference to scientific style and format.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars just view the excerpt.......2005-01-18

I encourage you to view the excerpt of this book; it will help you, more than any customer review, to see if this book is what you expect or imagine. In the excerpt, I found that chapter 2 starts with a bulleted list of items, without any introduction, any motivation, any explanation, nor comment, exactly like a table of contents. Next, using the same style (bulleted list or table of contents), "develops" each item of the bulleted list. I feel that this type of book would not give much help to write anything. To buy this book is like buying a power point presentation.

5 out of 5 stars One of the four essential books for the technical writer.......2002-03-11

This is the best style guide for technical writing I have ever found. It gives more every day practical information than any of the other technical writing books and gives that information in a highly usable format.

My only complaint--my standard complaint about my reference books--is that the index is far less comprehensive than it ought to be. Given modern computer indexing capabilities, one would think authors and publishers could do a better job.

However, with this is one of the four essential books: 1. Strunk and White, Elements of Style, 2. Prentice Hall, Words Into Type, 3. Garner, A Dictionary of Modern American Usage (for the British tech writer, Fowler's Modern English Usage) and 4. Ruebens, Science and Technical Writing. With these four, a technical writer can handle almost any situation that arises. There are other books covering special fields that can be added, but these four will always be the bedrock.

If you are a professional technical writer or only an occasional one, you can't go wrong having this book handy on your desktop.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2000-09-08

While Robert A. Day's How to Write & Publish a Scientific Paper gives a good overview of the writing and publishing process on a macro level regarding organization and presentation of material, Science and Technical Writing provides great detailed advice on a micro level. Philip Rubens gives very clear instruction on paragraphing, grammar, punctuation and spelling as well as the intricacies of how to present numbers, mathematical symbols and scientific notation. In addition, there are illustrated guidelines on how to design a variety documents such as brochures, manuals and newsletters right down to the page-level including representing information in charts, tables and diagrams. The book itself is well-designed and well-organized giving testament to its own advice. This is a good general reference for both writers and editors of science and technical documentation.

3 out of 5 stars Very expensive for what you get.......2007-07-07

I had to buy this book for my Writing for Chemists in college. It was very expensive when I bought it. I only used it once. The book is not very well organized, and it is difficult to find what you need. I think it is not a good book!

5 out of 5 stars The ACS Style Guide : A Manual for Authors and Editors.......2001-09-12

The ACS Style Guide (A Manual for Authors and Editors) 2nd is an up-to-date edition for the authors and editors, and a guideline for the American Chemistry Society (ACS) publications. This edition almost answers all the possible question of authors and editors. The detail index from page 431 to page 460 gives us the most effective, comprehensive and user-friendly guide for publication.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2000-09-07

The American Chemical Society has done an excellent job in compiling this invaluable resource for its members. It encompasses everything you could possible want to know about writing a scientific paper, posters, letters to the editor, press releases, naming and numbering of chemical compounds, conventions in chemistry, copyright, ethical issues as well as preparing an effective oral presentation. In addition, it has a clear and concise section on grammar and punctuation, a very functional index, is up-to-date including guidelines on how to cite references from Web sites, and provides a useful bibliography after each chapter. My job often involves proofreading of abstracts or journal articles in various fields of science; apart from a dictionary to check spelling, this is the resource I reach for most.

    5 out of 5 stars The writer's struggle.......2002-04-07

Recently I was fortunate to read "Technical Style" and I enthusiastically recommend it. As one who has struggled for over 50 years with writing, I have collected several books on writing style and doubted at first whether a new book could offer anything new or useful. I am delighted to say that my doubts have been washed away--I am a believer. The book is clear, imaginative, precise (I learned this is an asyndeton). Chapters on how to present equations, tables, and graphics are particularly useful. Every chapter has something that will be helpful in the daily struggle.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Handbook in the True Sense.......2000-06-20

I borrowed this book from the library, my choice out of the 48 tech writing books available, and I am delighted with it--so much so that I'm ordering my own copy. It covers everything I've been trying to teach my office-full of engineers and scientists, from how to say "nuclear," to when to hyphenate, to what to include in a table. I HIGHLY recommend it to all who want to sound technically competent and at the same time "humanly" readable.

    4 out of 5 stars Matt Young's The Technical Writer's Handbook.......2000-02-29

Frankly, this book should be on every scientist's and engineer's shelf. It indicates with clarity and humor the common, stupid, things people do when they write. It's particularly good for developing a non-pompous and concise style. For example, Young tells us to use, instead of "at this point in time," the word "now," or instead of "utilize" just say "use." The book is full of examples and hits all the things that drive me nuts reading other people's writing, particularly the writing of students.

The downside is that it is organized alphabetically by words in commonly used bad phrases, so looking up a specific item is darn near impossible. Still, Matt Young's book makes for fun and delightful reading.

Let the Author's Handbook of Styles for Life Science Journals save you time and trouble by providing a one-stop resource for all your manuscript writing requirements. No more plowing through your journal collection or wandering the library stacks to get those elusive journal pages containing instructions to authors. In addition, some new titles that promise to be important to their fields, like Nature Medicine and Emerging Infectious Diseases are also included. Organized by journal title, the handbook's entries are uniformly arranged to allow direct comparison between journals.
