Highest Recommendation.......2007-05-13
For a comprehensive book on vitreoretinal disease, there is little to find fault with. For some less common diseases, I found the descriptions in the Gass atlas to be more detailed. Howevere, much is covered in the Ryan series that is not covered in Don Gass's atlas and so the books are complementary. The amount of detail is appropriate for this level of textbook. With three large volumes, it has proved to be a daunting task to get through it all. Retention of all this material is also not easy. For me, repetition and foundation building helps. So..
Before delving into these volumes, I would recommend reading several other retina books first for some background/foundation building including: Freeman's "practical atlas," Holz/Spaid Medical Retina book or Quillen's book, the academy book, and then for surgical techniques Steve Charles book, Ingrid Kressig's books on segmental buckling, and then finally the Highlights book "Retinal and Vitreoretinal surgery." I think these books provide a great foundation before delving into Ryan.
I think the Monographs series books on angiography and electrophysiology (volumes 5 and 2) provide a nice review of these topics before reading Ryan.
Another retina book I am reading simultaneously is Dr. Hartnett's Pediatric Retina book. It is truly excellent as well.
a starting point of any research topic in retina basic sciences.......2005-11-21
I found it helpful to form an overview of retinal photoreceptor's connecting cilium relation to retinal degerative diseases. initially I did not know where to start my research but after reading the book section about connecting cilium structure and function , I formed a plan of what are the main topics in my research.

Highly recommended.......2004-01-23
This book is considered the "Bible" for vitreo-retinal specialists, as this book gives a comprehensive and conscise insight to diseases, treatment and opinions in the subspecialty. I highly recommend this book to any general ophthalmologist who has a keen interest in the vitreo-retinal subspecialty, and to those who are planning to take post-residency fellowships in this subspecialty.
An excellent book for a resident.......2001-03-13
I just graduated from medical school and trying to become an Ophthalmologist. Since I am not an English speaking person, it is difficult to get informations in English. However, each sections and chapters of this book is well organized and helps me to get accustomed to the medical terms in Ophthalmology. This book is easier to understand than the text books written in Japanese (I am a Japanese).

Each title features more than 150 color illustrations throughout and a short, succinct format which in most cases, includes: Epidemiology and Etiology, History, Physical Examination, Differential Diagnosis, Laboratory and Special Examinations, Diagnosis, Prognosis, and Management.
Customer Reviews:
Essential reading for ophtho residents........2007-03-10
I strongly recommend the entire Wills Eye Series for ophthalmology residents. Full color photos and concise descriptions. More useful in a pinch than the BCSC series, although note that this series has no test questions.

Book Description
Optical Coherence Tomography of Ocular Diseases, Second Edition is a completely revised and updated version of this classic text. Incorporated within over 700 pages are a multitude of updated features unique to this edition including over 1,600 color images, state-of-the-art technology, and case presentations. These elements cohesively work together to successfully demonstrate the retina in normal and diseased states using the innovative Stratus OCTTM.
Optical Coherence Tomography of Ocular Diseases, Second Edition is written with the clinician in mind. The text's primary objective is to illustrate the appearance of the eye in health and disease, comparing conventional clinical technologies using OCT imaging. This method introduces the clinician to the manifestations of disease as elucidated by OCT, while presenting the more familiar fundoscopic and fluorescein angiographic appearance side-by-side.
Drs. Joel S. Schuman, Carmen A. Puliafito, and James G. Fujimoto, PhD together with their co-authors have collaborated to produce this comprehensive resource. OCT applications in retinal diseases, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, anterior segment and a description of OCT technologies are all topics extensively covered in this new edition. An appendix is included that contains a wealth of technical information for those interested in learning more about the principles of operation of this medical diagnostic imaging technology.
This text will provide a clinical reference for the retinal and glaucoma specialist that shows how to utilize and interpret OCT imaging to enhance diagnostic sensitivity and specificity as well as to enhance therapeutic decision making and monitor the outcome of treatment. Both clinicians and scientists interested in optical imaging of the eye will find this insightful text a useful reference.
Features:
Over 1,600 color images. Strong focus on retina, glaucoma, and the anterior segments. Utilizes and interprets OCT imaging.
Customer Reviews:
Good reference for OCT.......2006-01-18
This book is a more than adequate reference to OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) and its' applications to ocular diseases. The principles of OCT is a very good reference for understanding how the technology works. The OCT findings correlated with the fundus pictures and angiogram provide an excellent view of the pathology of the cases reviewed. A good reference to have for glaucoma and retinal specialist.
Book Description
With its intuitive format and one of the largest collections of high-quality retinal images, Clinical Retina is an exceptional value for any ophthalmologist or retina specialist. Customer Reviews:
Perfect book for the medical student.......2004-01-12
As a medical student taking a retina elective, I wanted a book that would provide sufficient detail and color photographs at a reasonable price. This book fits the bill.
In terms of content, this book works perfectly for a beginner. The first chapter begins with the anatomy and physiology of the retina. The second covers ancillary testing from fluorescein angiography to OCT. The third chapter then provides the clinical features and differential diagnosis for a variety of retinal findings such as a cherry red spot. From there, the book continues as mentioned in the editorial review. I felt the first three chapters gave me a good foundation to understand the diseases presented later on. The writing is clear and concise throughout.
As for the photographs, there are hundreds of high-quality color photographs in this book. The entire text of the book with photographs can also be found on the CD-ROM. However, you cannot take the photographs from the CD-ROM for presentation purposes unless you have a full version of Adobe Acrobat as the entire thing is in pdf format. Being able to use the photographs for presentations would have been a plus as they are really superb.
I cannot compare this book to the Academy books since I am not a resident yet but it is certainly the best book I have seen available to me. I highly recommend it to any medical students or transitional year interns doing a retina elective.

Customer Reviews:
Good book in the vitreo-retinal subspecialty.......2004-05-15
Has good in-dept discussion to the subspecialty. Compliments Ryans 3 volume Retina nicely. Very good pictures and the tables are nicely constructed. A must have for any general ophthalmologist with a keen interest in retina or any vitreo-retinal specialist.
Excellent comprehensive Retina Vitreous text.......1998-10-29
This two volume set covers medical and surgical retina. It has many fine color photographs and is written on a high level. It seems to fill some of the gaps left by the Ryan Retina series. Drug coverage seems up to date, and treatment recommendations are current

Book Description
Ophthalmology has long been considered a surgical area because so many disorders/diseases are treated surgically rather than medically. In the past ten years, however, there have been considerable therapeutic breakthroughs in non-surgical treatments. For instance, anti-glaucoma agents have becoming increasingly effective. This edition will include a new chapter for retinal disease. There are now several pharmaceutical agents being used to treat these diseases. Specifically, age-related macular degeneration has many new products â macugen, lucentis, etc. â and intraocular infections are primarily treated with intravitreal medications. Additionally, the anti-allergy and dry eye markets have grown tremendously in the last 2-3 years (endura, restasis, xibrom, etc).
Book Description
James Folk, MD and Mark Wilkinson, OD are professors at the University of Iowa. They are experts in the field of macular degeneration, and they are not being paid by anyone to recommend anything. They treat patients with age-related macular degeneration almost every day, perform research that explores the causes of AMD, attend scientific meetings, participate in treatment trials, and promise to tell you the straight scoop. They will tell you what scientists and doctors all over the world know about this disease, and, just as importantly, what they don't know. The first three chapters describe AMD along with the latest science which yields clues to what causes it. You need to understand the disease in order to fight it. The last six chapters tell how you can fight back to save your vision. They will talk about changing your lifestyle, eating the right foods, and taking multivitamins with zinc along with other medications which may reduce the risk of vision loss. They will discuss the latest treatments for the wet form of AMD, including new ones that have not yet been approved but show promise. They will also talk about how to maximize your remaining vision and live as full a life as possible. You can fight back to save your sight. Drs. Folk and Wilkinson will tell you how. Endorsements "The field of age-related macular degeneration is exploding with new research and treatments. It is impossible for patients, or even eye doctors, to keep up on the latest findings and treatments. Drs. Folk and Wilkinson are experts in this field and have the exceptional ability to communicate difficult information in a simple, straightforward style. This is a great book on AMD for the patient and eye care provider and I highly recommend it." - Edwin Stone, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Ophthalmology, Howard Hughes Medical Investigator, University of Iowa "Even though I've had macular degeneration for more than ten years, your book taught me a lot of new information. It's very easy to read and understand. I liked the glossary because I can look things up and get my questions answered quickly. I thought the video was excellent to actually see what patients like me go through. I think everyone who has this disease, (and their families and doctor), would benefit from this book. Thank you for sending it to me." -RM, a retired teacher and patient with age-related macular degeneration "I'm a busy vitreoretinal specialist and see many patients with age-related macular degeneration. This book presented the latest on research, medical and surgical treatment, and low vision. It also explained where the research and treatment was going in the coming five years and how to keep up-to-date with the new findings. I recommend this book to anyone who takes care of patients with AMD. The book will be especially valuable to my patients who can learn what to do to reduce their chance of losing vision and improve their quality of life." -Denise L. Kayser, MD, North Bay Vitreoretinal Consultants
Customer Reviews:
for my mother.......2006-07-11
Great book! I am a general ophthalmologist and read this book and found it very helpful in my understanding of the various treatments and vitamin therapies for macular degeneration. I then gave a copy to my mother who has severe macular degeneration. She loved the book and found it very useful reading it before her last retina evaluation. I applaud Dr Folk and Wilkinson for their work on this great and hopeful guide for patients with this frustrating disease.
Important information, easy to read.......2006-06-07
The authors of this book are very knowledgeable on the subject but they have managed to write a book that is not over my head. It has some important information for all ages on how to prolong the life of your eyes. I would recommend this book, not only for those who are already at risk for age related vision loss, but for parents who want to teach thier children good habits now so they will be able to see as clearly, and for as long, as possible.
Great book for people who fear going blind from AMD.......2006-05-24
This book is written for the person who is afraid he or she might have age-related macular degeneration (AMD), for people who already have AMD, and for family and friends of AMD patients. The authors are an ophthalmologist and an optometrist, giving the book points of reference from two similar but distinct disciplines. Dr. Folk covers the mechanisms of AMD and medical treatment while Dr. Wilkinson covers topics about making the best of the vision you have.
The illustrations are clear and help with the understanding of this complex topic. The tone is conversational, making it easily read but never condescending. The type is large enough with lines far enough apart to be easily read by people whose vision is not optimal but is not as large as a large-print text.
I recommend this to any person who might be faced with AMD and has been told they can't do anything about it. Physicians, particularly those who see older patients, may also want to consider using this book as a waiting room book.
Excellent book for patients and health care providers!.......2006-05-24
This book is well-written and provides current information on the diagnosis, management, and treatment of macular degeneration.
