Johannes Gabriel Granö's career as a geographer spanned the first half of the twentieth century. In the course of his explorations in Central Asia (where his father had served as Lutheran pastor to Siberia's Finnish colony) Granö initially specialized in geomorphology, a highly fashionable branch of science at that time, and one regarded by many as the true calling of the geographer. It was not long, however, before theoretical themes began to emerge in Granö's work. In the 1920s he began to develop a highly original methodology of landscape geography, based on the idea that the real object of geographical research should be the environment as perceived by the senses and regions constructed on the basis of these perceptions. It was from this starting point that he created the doctrine he called "pure geography." First published in German (1929) and then in his native Finnish (1930), Granö's Pure Geography is regarded by many geographers as one of the classic works in the field. Long out of print, this widely acclaimed classic is now available for the first time in English translation.

Prophet of speed.......2000-06-15
I think Virilio is one of the century's genuine original thinkers. More specifically, his thesis about speed and chrono-politics is a key explanation of the basic transformation of society under pressure from technology. Of course he is all over the place and hardly rigorous, but his shere intelligence makes him a 'must read' in my view. His ideas inspire more than educate, but he is worth paying attention to in a world of charlatans passing themselves off as intellectuals. Read, think and understand.

Brilliant political analysis of revolutionary nihilism.......2001-10-22
"Alien Powers" is a concise and first rate dissection of the patterns of thought, or rather un-thought, that underlie contemporary ideological movements of all stripes. As such it is indispensible for anyone who would be informed as to the real psychological roots of such apparently inexplicable phenomena as the persistence of Marxism and it's loathsome offspring in intellectual life. I would also add that this book makes a useful suppliment to the work of Eric Voegelin. Voegelin analyzed ideology from a philosphical and theological perspective, but many of his conclusiond dovetail nicely with Minouge's, and comparative study can only lead to profit.
Thought-Provoking Analysis`.......2000-04-25
This is not a book for the general reader--it requires some interest in and aptitude for philosophical writing. But I actually found it great fun to read--I especially liked the witty asides and turns of phrases that peppered this quite serious analysis of the relationship between ideology and modernity. By ideology, Minogue includes not only Marxism, but also contemporary political theories such as feminism and other movements that posit the modern world as essentially a system of oppressive structures of domination. His point is that much ideological thinking is not only toxic, but that it is ultimately a form of magical or mystical thinking that seems at bottom to constitute a protracted curse on modernity. Minogue notes that ideology became a substitution faith in the twentieth century, but I would have liked to see a little more examination of the way in which the spiritual void that seemed to accompany modernity made this possible.

Excellent introduction to an important agency.......2006-09-03
This book is one of the few ones available on the FDA that is not a polemical attack on the agency. This agency, which is short on man-power and funds, is tasked with an incredibly daunting mission, i.e. to ensure the health of most foods, drugs, and cosmetics. Hilts provides a good history of the agency, often focusing on various individuals involved at all levels, which I liked. He talks about parties affected in various ways by FDA actions, such as consumers, patients, pharmaceutical companies, doctors, politicians, etc.. The only thing I felt misssing was a little more criticism of the FDA. No institution can be perfect or be completely staffed with ideal employees, and Hilts seems to limit his critiques of the FDA to outsiders, particularly politicians and corporations, while not focusing on any legitimate internal problems. But nevertheless I highly recommend to anyone wanting an overview of this critical area of regulation and of the players involved.
The friendly side of the FDA.......2005-01-11
As with many institutions, the FDA servers a perceived needed purpose. This book is a history of why the agency was needed and its design. It is filled with horror stories and how the FDA came to the rescue. Some of these stories even scared me as I recognized the products and or brands. The chapter "Capitalism in Crisis" reads more like a political statement against capitalism than a "FDA is out to help" statement.
What they do not say is that the FDA is the Government to the point that they can carry guns and badges. Now with the fast pace of drugs and device invention the FDA is needed more than ever. The other side of the coin is that thy have become an unwatched agency that can and does set its own rules to how a business can do their job down to describing the data field that are to be stored in their computer. Their regulations read like a phone book of conflicting statements (with no recourse). And you can be shut down on a whim if you do not follow the regulations as interpreted by their agent as they are the law.
The book contains an excellent set of notes. They are divided in to chapters. And there is a fair index. For people that like pictures there are eight pages of monochrome photographs.
The author has written several articles on medicine for various periodicals.
A Much Better Book.......2004-11-15
Hilts is a journalist so perhaps he can be forgiven for writing such a biased book, although to give him credit, he does not seem to even try to hide his bias, which makes the book a kind of comedy.
A much better (and thinner) book on the FDA is written by a former FDA regulator and a M.D., To America's Health, by Henery Miller.
Great intro to public health regulation.......2004-10-16
Sorry the other reviewer didn't like this, but as an FDA employee when Reagan would not allow the regulation of unpasturized cheese, where the listeria bacteria consumed in it caused the deaths of dozens of babies and pregnant women, I have to agree with the author. That cheese example is just the beginning; it doesn't include the dozens children who died after it was clear that aspirin use in children with fever caused the deadly Reye syndrome and the administration refused to allow FDA to put warning instructions on the label. It does not include the dozens of children who were poisoned by pills in easy-opening containers (iron pills look like candy and overdoses not treated promptly are irreversibly fatal). This book does name courageous industry people as well as public servants. It can open your eyes to the critical role the government played in assuring the availability of penicillin during WWII and vaccines today. It is the history of germs and cures in the US in a plain-spoken format.
History or Propaganda?.......2004-09-28
I came across this book when it was assigned to me in one of my MBA classes, and I thought it would be very interesting to finally read about how the FDA was created. I have a strong interest in the pharmaceutical industry and the agencies that regulate it, and the idea of a definitive 'history of the FDA' really appealed to me. From the very start, it was obvious that this book had an extrememly liberal slant, to the point that any good practices seen in the industry, or good companies within it, were completely obscured. However, I kept an open mind, and figured that the basic facts were still in order. However, I just got to the chapters regarding the Reagan years, which are perhaps the furthest back my memory goes. I was appalled by the vitriol the author spewed against all conservatives, and the conservative ideology, calling all conservatives a group of "white men" who were bound by "their anger against minorities, government, and established elites". Leaders such as Ronald Reagan were desribed as having an ideology that was "a bundle of fears and dislikes", and an "anger that holds together the radical conservatives". Now, I don't mean to say that the author isn't entitled to his opinion, but the degree to which he carries these extreme beliefs into a book that is described as a history is disturbing. I now doubt everything I've read so far, and will be looking for an unbiased account in order to get the TRUE story.

The nuclear ambitions of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) and its growing influence amongst certain Shi'a factions in Iraq is attracting media attention to a degree not seen since the late 1970s. Nevertheless, since 1979 the IRI has remained consistent in its determination to become the dominant political/ideological force in the Middle East and Persian Gulf. The clerics sitting in Tehran and their golden boy, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, repeatedly make clear to the world that they will not abandon the Ayatollah Khomeini's vision of an Islamic world state. Millions of Iranians have been sacrificed for this vision, and the mullahs who rule them will not hesitate to sacrifice a million more. Iran is notorious for taking hostages. Ironically, however, the largest group being held hostage there are the Iranian people themselves.
"Iran Zamin" is a pen name chosen most wisely and appropriately by the author of this book, ROMANTICISM and REVIVALISM Of PURE DIVINE MOTHERLAND Of IRAN. "Iran Zamin" is a term often used in recalling the ancient and noble glory of the pre-Islamic empires of "Greater Iran." And this book's author is undoubtedly a true Iranian patriot, who not only passionately loves his country, but is one who deeply cares for its people. Iran Zamin writes not only to preserve his Persian heritage and culture but also to shout a WAKE UP! call to his long-suffering fellow Iranians. He writes to remind them that before there was the Arab Muhammed and his religion of Islam, there was the Iran of the Sassanids, and before that, of the Achaemenids. Zoroaster, Cyrus and Darius are their true forefathers, men recognized by history as some of the greatest influences upon world civilization. Such men were not only considered builders and innovators, but more importantly were men who championed righteousness and compassion. Zamin is one of the few Iranian writers who have the honest courage to say that the Persian legacy means nothing to the mullahs ruling Iran. Indeed, he cleverly points out that the family origins of the father of the Islamic Republic, the Ayatollah Khomeini himself, are not Iranian but Indian! As Zamin notes, the IRI seeks world power not for any nationalist interests, but instead uses Iran merely as base from which it plans to spread forth a truly Shi'a world state.
The ancient and noble origins of Iran aren't the only major themes of Zamin's book. Rather it is primarily concerned with the present and looks toward the future. Thus the writer devotes much time to the disgraceful treatment done to the legacy of Shah Reza Muhammad I Pahlavi.
Portrayed as a slavish puppet of American foreign policy on the one hand, and as a selfish and cruel despot on the the other, the Shah, Zamin points out, has to be the most misunderstood and slandered figure of late 20th Century history. He shows us that this was the man who worked hardest to bring social and economic progress to Iran, turning that nation into one of the strongest and most advanced in the Middle East. It was the Shah's "White Revolution" (distinguished from the "red" of the Communists, and the "black" of the clerics) that brought land reform, religious freedom, widespread free education, and women's suffrage and social equality. All of which, by the way, were vehemently despised and vigorously opposed by the Muslim clerical establishment. In truth, Zamin isn't the only one who noticed the Shah's reluctance to brutality, nor is he alone in holding the western media and former American president Jimmy Carter directly responsible for the Shah of Iran's downfall.
Another important aspect of the Shah of Iran's reign was his vital role as a peacekeeper in the Persian Gulf. Zamin compares the relative stability of the region during Pahlavi rule with the chaotic mess it has become after the Shah was overthrown. He makes it plain that Saddam Hussein was intimidated by the efficiency and strength of Imperial Iran's military - especially its crack air force (for more on the Shah of Iran read "Ahmad Kasvravi Tabrizi's" The OTHER SIDE Of The STORY).
Iran Zamin finishes this book by discussing the Iranian theocracy's clerical elite, considering them to be the most corrupt and venal bureaucrats and politicos existing today. He concentrates mostly on the notorious former president of the IRI, Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the mullah once listed by Forbes Magazine to be one of the richest men in the world. In Zamin's eyes Rafsanjani epitomizes the hypocritical and parasitical cleric growing ever fatter off Iran's wealth, while the people face skyrocketing inflation and unemployment, and have to suffer to see sons addicted and daughters forced through desperation to sell their kidneys as well as their sex.
Beyond his well-known Hezbollah connections and the embarrassing criminal charges being held against him by Argentine authorities for his involvement in the 1994 bombing of a Buenos Aires Jewish community center, Zamin also exposes Rafsanjani's financial dealings in Canada, specifically his investments in Toronto's toll Highway 407. It enrages Zamin (as it should all of us) that this convicted terrorist, wanted man, and stereotypical fatcat is making profits here in North America, just over our border.
Iran Zamin's book not only informs and educates, it also emotionally involves you into the sad and desperate situation of one of the oldest and greatest nations on this earth.

This book mentioned how former US Democrat President CARTER poor policy and executing Machaivelli doctrines in Iran gave birth to Trojan-Horse Era and has brought the world to point of destruction. In addition, the book discussed role of King in Iran's political culture point of view and how His Majesty Just and Benevolent King of Kings Mohammad Reza PAHLAVI executed Education of Cyrus in Iran which was the White Revolution. Thus, the frame work or theory of this book is incepted on Education of Cyrus.
Last point, the book mentioned the theology state in Iran is in point of collapse and Iranian people must be unify in their cause to topple the theology state in Iran.
And as a reader is reading this book, the author is romanticising about Iran and reviving Iran's true spirit as the cover pray is integrated in the content of the book.

Do voters in large scale democracies reliably vote for the electoral outcomes most in their own interest? Much of the literature on voting predicts that they do, but this book argues that fully rational voters will not, in fact, consistently vote for the political outcomes they prefer. The authors critique the dominant interest-based theory of voting and offer a competing theory, which they term an "expressive" theory of electoral politics. This theory is shown to be more coherent and more consistent with actually observed voting behavior. In particular, the theory does a better job of explaining the propensity of democratic regimes to make war, the predominance of moral questions on democratic regimes to make war, the predominance of moral questions on democratic political agendas, and the distribution of government resources in democratic systems. This important book offers a compelling challenge to the central premises of the prevailing theories of voting behavior and should serve as the basis for fundamental reevaluation in the field.

This book changed fundamentally the way I think about democracy. The authors convincingly argue that, because no single vote in a democratic election is likely to determine the outcome of the election, each voter is free to vote according to his or her ideological lights -- that is, each voter is likely to elevate ideological considerations over material ones. Insofar as ideological considerations run counter to a voter's material interests, the Brennan-Lomasky insight is that we cannot predict the outcome of elections merely by identifying the dominant material interest shared by a majority of voters.
This insight is often interpreted as rejecting the public-choice assumption that people behave self-interestedly. But it does no such thing. When it is realized that each voter's vote is inconsequential (as far as the outcome of the election goes), each voter is free to "consume" ideology. As I see it, the Brennan-Lomasky thesis conforms more fully with public-choice fundamentals than does the previous notion that voters always (or typically) vote their narrow material interests.
This book is one of the most important works in political science, and public-choice, published during the past quarter century.
