For use by "the initiated".......2007-02-18
While Gerald & Co's book may look like a good introduction to Oracle's manufacturing & supply chain management modules, it will make little sense to those who have never used the system or don't have access to it. Because I had three years of hands-on experience with Oracle's E-Business Suite, the book is useful and I'm giving it a 3-star rating.
Things that Gerald & Co. could have done better: more illustrations of what they write about. There are many "bells and whistles" in the software, but the book doesn't have enough "screen shots" to show you where they're located on an Oracle "form." I'm not satisfied with the case study, which they have placed in chapter 22. There are no screen shots there either.
Gerald & Co. are assuming you can navigate and know a lot of the Oracle lingo. If you are new to this, don't expect to learn it from this book. The audiences for the book are intermediate and advanced users.
One could also regard this as a reference book. Use it to answer problems you encounter while using the product or better understand what's going on. In this context, I'd rate it 3 stars, too.
A Good Introduction.......2006-11-03
This book is for users of Oracle Manufacturing and has the end-user in mind Definately not for the the technical minded, site specific Installs and for those who are used to Technical Reference manuals

Excellent Oracle reference tool.......2005-10-17
I was part of the Oracle implementation team at our company, and I have found this book to be a useful tool for myself in the year since implementation as we continue to explore new functionalities. It is also a useful tool for the application users to learn how Oracle works. In fact, I not only purchased this book for myself, but I have purchased copies for several other people in the company. I refer to it all the time.
Good Book for the beginners.......2005-08-24
This book is very useful for the beginners as well those who want to brush up their knowledge on oracle applications release 11i.
Mostly it covers all Manufacturing & Distribution modules. Financial modules are not covered in this book. I was planning to buy a book and searching for it and finally ended up in buying a very useful book.
Main drawback is not much of screen captures displayed. So if you want to better understand you have to read it by sitting in front of applications screen and switching the forms as you read.
Overall the book is worth having it.

Don't know why it's getting all these negative reviews..........2007-08-02
...maybe I'm just dumb. This was the textbook for a senior/ first-year grad student EE probability course. I found it well-organized and well-written, with plenty of examples designed to illustrate and reinforce important concepts. I cannot answer as to its mathematical rigor, not being a mathematician, but as an engineer I found the derivations thorough (i.e., not a lot of skipped steps or hand waving). Yes, the homework problems at the end of the chapters were harder than the examples: aren't they supposed to be? And yes, not many answers were given in the back of the book, but the nature of the material is such that having the answer doesn't really help you. For worked problems, I highly recommend the Schaum's Outline (which saved my bacon on a number of homework problems).
I did very well in that course, and feel that reading this book gave me a firm grasp of the material.
Good book ... stop whining.......2007-04-09
I took Random Processes as an online course, and guess who was giving the lectures? The same Leon-Garcia. This is not a book for those who go to class, fall asleep during the lecture or spend the two hours thinking about what to do after class, hoping that then they can just open the book and understand everything just glancing over it. The book and the class lecture complement each other.
I didn't have any problem understanding 90% of the concepts explained in the book, although there are some examples that the book does not explain in detail, but they were thoroughly explained in the lectures.
So, depending how well your professor explained the concepts you could end up liking or hating this book. I like it. It is not perfect, but it is a good book to keep as reference.
Very few solved problems.......2007-03-18
This book contains solutions to very few back of the chapter problems making it almost useless and definitely not worth the price
An excellent first course in Probability.......2007-01-29
I am surprised by the negative reviews of this book. I used this book as an undergraduate and it is still THE reference I reach for even in the more advanced courses in probability and random processes I have taken since. It develops topics using intuition rather than beating you over the head with abstraction (those looking for measure theoretic approaches to probability look elsewhere like Billingsley). The numerous examples serve to solidify the readers understanding with applications to real problems - something that is easily lost in more abstract/advanced tomes. This is an excellent book for a first course.
A Disgrace to Engineering.......2006-06-11
Probability and Random Processes can be easily approached with grace and elegance so long as the professor and/or writer possess such talents. All too often Albert Leon-Garcia comes across as a total wacko in the possession neither.

Written for the reader with a little background in software engineering and test management, Test Process Improvement is an innovative guide to improving how your organization tests software. It's got plenty to offer any test engineer or manager.
This short yet densely packed text outlines the Test Process Improvement (TPI) model for software testing. While there are other testing models available today (like the Testing Maturity Model, or TMM), the authors suggest that TPI offers more detail than its rivals. TPI measures testing effectiveness in 20 "key areas," in such categories as test strategy, metrics, tools, and communication, plus defect and test process management.
After a short overview of the kinds of testing in use today, the book delves into each of these 20 areas in considerable detail with criteria for up to four levels of effectiveness (labeled "A" through "D"). By working through these categories, an organization can both gauge its current testing process and make it better with the book's "improvement suggestions." You'll appreciate this text most if you have some interest in software engineering. (The authors, who are Dutch, write clearly, but this is by no means light reading.) There are plenty of easy-to-digest tables and lists, which will be most practical for the busy testing professional. Other useful sections include a concise tour of testing tools and the Test Management Approach (TMap), which shows how to integrate test management into the larger process of software design.
In all, Test Process Improvement can give any testing engineer or manager some practical ways to work more effectively. This is a groundbreaking blueprint for improving software testing. --Richard Dragan
Topics covered: Overview and guide to Test Process Improvement (TPI), types of testing, pitfalls for successful testing, measuring your organization's test maturity, 20 key areas, levels, checkpoints, suggestions for improvement, implementing TPI within your organization, TPI and the project life cycle, test planning and project estimation, metrics, advantages and limits of testing tools, test and office environments for improved testing, communication, reporting, defect management, managing the test process, evaluation, low-level testing, and Test Management Approach (TMap)--a proprietary strategy for structured testing.
Book Description
Software testing is a vital component of the software development process, but few organizations expend any effort optimizing the process to make it more efficient. Although in practice it can be hard to define what steps need to be taken, models such as the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) have been successful in helping organizations improve their software process and TPI aims to do a similar thing for the testing part of the software process. The TPI model offers a frame of reference which helps to determine the strong and weak points in an organization's current test practice, and gives specific and realistic suggestions for the improvement of the test process in terms of lead time, costs and quality.
Customer Reviews:
A good first or second read.......2007-05-14
If you're new to testing this book gives a basic insight into the processes. I would read this book after reading "Software Testing Techniques: Finding the Defects that Matter " by Scott Loveland.
Best Test Process addressed.......2007-01-14
A well structured, compressed and to the point book that addresses all I've dreamt to establish for a well defined test process, multi-facet process improvment, and practical maturity model assessment. Thank you Tim.
TPI.......2007-01-04
Very pratical book. It helped conducting a self assessment and generate a lot of ideas. I recommend it for any software test origanization that needs a little improvement.
For mature, stable test organizations.......2002-05-19
This book provides a coherent process improvement approach for software testing. It provides a model that supports the assessment of strengths and weaknesses of an existing software testing process and an approach for developing and implementing remedial action to rectify the weaknesses. As such this book is not useful to organizations that have not achieved a mature and stable testing process because the model will not apply. If you are seeking a book that will get your processes stable you will find "Systematic Software Testing" by Rick D. Craig and Stefan P. Jaskiel a better place to start.
However, if your processes are stable this book is among the best because it stays focused on improving the testing process and does so in the same manner that SEI's CMM does for software development. In fact, the TPI approach in this book is cross-referenced to the CMM, which gives you an approach that can be viewed as a testing maturity model that aligns nicely with the CMM (including the newer CMMI). This is one of the strong points of the book and TPI.
Another thing to know about this book is that it's written more like a specification than a narrative. Some readers may find this difficult, but if you are involved in mapping the TPI key process areas to the CMM (or SPICE, Bootstrap or PSM), you'll appreciate the format. Also, the book views TPI as a subset of software process improvement, and software process improvement as a subset of TQM. While the authors focus on the software testing process, they do not isolate it from the bigger picture. This allows you to view then entire quality process as a coherent whole when you're assessing the software testing process and developing improvement strategies.
I personally think this book adds considerably to the software testing body of knowledge, and that the approach the authors give is both practical and sensible. If you work in an organization that has a stable testing process or is at CMM level 2 or above this book is essential reading.
Wery useful method to rely on.......2001-06-26
As a senior test engineer consultant I was asked to do a investigation on how we had worked in the test team in a project, and provide feedback to the QA organization. I was using this method and found it wery helpful! This book, unlike most other books with this subject, goes straight to the problem and and is not focused on the number of pages...
Book Description
This practical 'how-to'book describes all the key operations of ARIS Toolset - the market leading Business Process Modelling Tool. Using lots of screen shots and plenty of practical examples, Rob Davis shows how ARIS can be used to model 'your' business processes.Based on his experience of using ARIS in British Telecommunications plc, the author describes practical ways of using ARIS Toolset:- Explaining the models and techniques that will enable new users to start modelling quickly and effectively.- Introducing tips and short cuts which make using the tool much easier.- Giving insights into the ARIS concepts.- Explaining the rationale behind alternative ways of using the tool, their benefits and the trade-offs involved.- Tackling issues found in real projects (e.g. complex model structures, handling variety, etc), as opposed to the simple examples given in many books. In addition to describing how to use the tool, Rob Davis discusses how to create standards for using ARIS as well as giving guidance on how to use ARIS for process capture and design.Business Process Modelling with ARIS is a 'must have'for every user of ARIS.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent reference for ARIS.......2005-03-11
This is an excellent reference book on ARIS. It is really a "must have" for anyone learning and using ARIS. It is well written and well structured. The only reason I've rated it at 4 stars is because it is based on Release 5 of ARIS. An updated edition would be great.
Best book written about Aris.......2003-10-17
This book explains quite good how to use Aris in practice. However it's quite heavy to read through. There could be more pictures and charts to get things clearer and easier to understand. But still absolutely the best book about Aris.
Book Description
If one thing catches the eye in almost all literature about (re)designing or (re)engineering of enterprises, it is the lack of a well-founded theory about their construction and operation. Often even the most basic notions like "action" or "process" are not precisely defined. Next, in order to master the diversity and the complexity of contemporary enterprises, theories are needed that separate the stable essence of an enterprise from the variable way in which it is realized and implemented. Such a theory and a matching methodology, which has passed the test of practical experience, constitute the contents of this book. The enterprise ontology, as developed by Dietz, is the starting point for profoundly understanding the organization of an enterprise and subsequently for analyzing, (re)designing, and (re)engineering it. The approach covers numerous issues in an integrated way: business processes, in- and outsourcing, information systems, management control, staffing etc. Researchers and students in enterprise engineering or related fields will discover in this book a revolutionary new way of thinking about business and organization. In addition, it provides managers, business analysts, and enterprise information system designers for the first time with a solid and integrated insight into their daily work.

This book is not for WinForm developers.......2007-02-01
The Patterns that the GoF are all applicable to WinForms, but this book assumes all web developing in its examples. I bought the book because I am a .NET WinForms developer so I if you are a web developer this book may help you, but it didn't do it for me.
I found the original GoF book, "Head First Design Patterns", even "Design Patterns for Dummies" better than this book. Also, it is unfortunate that .NET developers have to resort to these books and do not have a definitive Patterns book in any .NET language. The "Design Patterns in C#" is OK but that book has questions placed in there on nearly every page asking you to do something that isn't covered yet in the book which is bothersome.
.NET developers would do well to stay away from this book even if you are a patterns lover.
An Brilliant Contribution to our Field - Read 2-3 Times.......2004-10-25
Amazon Buyer,
The negative reviews puzzle me completely! I can only imagine the readers were expecting something different or didn't read the same book I did <grin>. Or do not build enterprise applications. I don't mean to say anything negative about my professional associates on Amazon, I just think (as a person addicted to reading <grin>) that this book is absolutely, positively fantastic.
There are so many nuggets of gold in this book. ANY serious .NET architect should have this publication on their book shelf.
There are about 5 more core books, many by Addison Wesley, a company that in my mind is leading the pack in Software Engineering work. Just my 2 cents.
If you would like my reading list please email as I am always happy to help those that are seeking a path. If I know your goals, I can probably certainly give you a set of books to get you to your goal. And again, I do disagree with the negative reviews but I do not mean any disrespect. Just friendly disagreement.
Kind Regards,
Damon Carr, CEO and Chief Technologist

Practial Book on .NET Patterns.......2004-09-13
I really don't understand the bad ratings of other reviewers. Either these reviewers didn't read the book or they are totally in love with theoretical issues on design patterns. This book shows hand on experiences - the authors shows REAL WORLD examples and illustrates how patterns are applied. I found the book very useful and it contains new interesting ideas on implementing PRACTICAL and USEFUL software applications with the .NET framework.
Good ideas but..........2004-08-06
I have to disagree with most of the reviews here. I think the author has some good design pattern idea's. It seems like if a pattern book doesn't rehash the GOF's book for the 654654th time, its not a good pattern book. The author had some good ideas, and while most of the patterns are fairly focused to a specific problem and are not totally generic, it doesn't mean its not a good pattern idea. It's just a domain specific pattern. I think the author should have clearly specified that, but didn't and that was a mistake. He billed the book as a general user pattern book. So I game him 4 stars on that.
But, in my job I'm very focused on code performance, so I knocked him back down two stars because these patterns are pretty much useless if you are designing anything that needs high performance capabilities, like web services. Most of the book is focused on patterns that he applies to web services, but he uses stuff like XML, DataSets and Reflection to create his abstraction layers. These three things are the 3 WORST performing features of .Net. If you are creating anything that needs to run `fast', you should stay away from all three of these. The pattern that killed me was his abstract packet pattern, which used DataSets or strongly typed DataSets to pass a list of parms between functions. He even hyped this pattern up based on performance reasons. I'd have to bet the guy never ran his code through a profiler to see what the performance implications of this pattern were. He made a lot of performance claims, but never showed the numbers to prove them, which is a dangerous thing because many developers will take what an author says as word, and not test the claim for themselves.
So I think he had good ideas, but very poor choices with his implementation technology.
Just not what you expect.......2004-07-15
There's some good stuff in this book, but it isn't a dedicated patterns book, if you ask me. On top of that there's just too much crap in the form of extremely poor editing resulting in typos on every second page and the code listings are very poor; well the content is half decent but agian the formatting clutters the big picture.
