There are a number of books out about how to study the bible. This one does an excellent job of teaching how to study in a way that helps you avoid reliance on commentaries, as some others may lead you to do more. You will develop the skills of observation, interpretation, and application. It is worthy of a seminary course textbook, without being too heady.

This book is written in laymen termonology than anyone can understand. His points are straightforward, easy to comprehend, and practical in application. I really enjoy the exercises provided at the end of each chapter. It helps to learn and then to immediately apply that knowledge. I'm really enjoying this book and would recommend it for anyone wishing to further their knowlege of the Bible.

Good Introduction.......2007-01-04
Interpreting the New Testament Text: Introduction to the Art and Science of Exegesis edited by Darrell Bock and Buist Fanning is divided into two parts. The first deals with methodology. This section travels from defining "Exegesis" through 13 chapters to application, ethics, and preaching.
In between the authors survey and explain textual criticism, grammatical analysis, diagramming, lexical analysis, exegetical problem solving (validation), background studies, genre studies (narrative, epistolary, apocalyptic), the Old Testament in the New, and theological analysis. All of this covers just over 300 pages.
The second section of the book provides 150 pages of exegetical examples of these activities written by some big name scholars such as I Howard Marshall and Edwin Yamauchi and many other lesser known but still excellent scholars.
The book as a whole is extremely well organized and has the wonderful benefit of bibliographies at the end of each section.
Overall the book is an excellent introduction for those who are just beginning to study New Testament Interpretation. For more indepth study Stanley Porter's Handbook to Exegesis of the New Testament is a more advanced level book, but even still don't loose Bock and Fanning, it has made a valuable contribution to the field.
Also unlike some similar books, Bock and Fannings's book is a hardback which will last longer.
Finally, the book is a Festschriften (a sort of tribute) to Harold Hoehner, who had a major impact on how exegesis was done at Dallas Theological Seminary.
Quality text, quality workmanship, five stars.

This is a collection in translation of essays by Paul Ricoeur which presents a comprehensive view of his philosophical hermeneutics, its relation to the views of his predecessors in the tradition and its consequences for the social sciences. The volume has three parts. The studies in the first part examine the history of hermeneutics, its central themes and the outstanding issues it has to confront. In Part II, Ricoeur’s own current, constructive position is developed. A concept of the text is formulated as the implications of the theory are pursued into the domains of sociology, psychoanalysis and history. Many of the essays appear here in English for the first time; the editor’s introduction brings out their background in Ricoeur’s thought and the continuity of his concerns. The volume will be of great importance for those interested in hermeneutics and Ricoeur’s contribution to it, and will demonstrate how much his approach offers to a number of disciplines.

Krsna and Kali are two of Hinduism's most popular deities, representing dramatically different truths about the nature of the sacred. Wonderful Study of Two Impressive Deities.......2007-06-27
I have always had trouble relating to Krisha, even though I read many books, commentaries and scriptures about Him, attended a Vaisnava temple for many months, and spent numerous hours chanting His mantras in an attempt to crack the mystery of why this Deity is so ravenously popular. I enjoyed the stories of His pastimes, and greatly appreciated the art and iconography that surrounded Him - but the deeper implications were simply lost for some reason.
This book really brought home to me WHY Krishna so captured the people's hearts, as it showed a completely different perspective on the energies inherant to His workship. While the familiar themes, of course, remained the same, Kinsley throws a new light on the matter that was fresh and much needed.
As a Shakta, though, I obviously also adored the latter studies of Kali as well. They also bring up aspects and interpretations of Her worship that are not too commonly presented in other texts.
While this book is an academic text, it is easy and enjoyable to read, and not at all dry.
I highly recommend this book to any student of Hindu religion and spirituality, anyone wondering "what's the deal with Krishna", or even "who is this Kali that everyone's talking about". Those who have a general intrest in world religions and mythology will eat this one up, too. Spiritual seekers who wish to expand their perspectives on how divinity can and is experienced by hundreds of million, and how the seeminly contradictory aspects of the divine can be embraced and adored will find this study an excellent read as well.
A wonderful study of two Hindu deities.......2005-06-20
Kinsley's book is perhaps the most enjoyable work on Hinduism that I've ever had the pleasure to read. In it the author both explains the history of each deity and how they crystalize certain overarching truths of the Hindu worldview. The effect is both a complex understanding of Kali and Krishna's importance within Hinduism as well as a greater appreciation of Hinduism in its totality.
A scholarly yet very readable study.......1999-03-12
This book truly brings these two highly interesting Hindu dieties to life. Kinsley clearly illustrates the various truths each deity represents within the Hindu tradition. The reader is not only left well educated about Kali and Krishna but about the rich character of the Hindu religious tradition as a whole. Perhaps the most enjoyable book I've ever read concerning Hindu religion.

His distinction between interpretation and construction had great influence among legal writers of his day. The first is 'the art of finding out the true sense of any form of words' (...) in the sense which the author intended to convey, while construction is the drawing of conclusions respecting subjects that lie outside the direct expression of the text. Constitutions should be construed closely, he holds, since their words have been carefully weighed. The treatise received high commendation from Chancellor Kent, Henry Clay, Rufus Choate, and others." (DAB). Lieber was a Prussian scholar and political activist who was persecuted for his liberalism. He emigrated to the United States in 1827, and his writings, among them an encyclopedia that was the foundation of the Encyclopedia Britannica, advanced his reputation. He became professor of history and political economy at South Carolina College, and was later appointed to the same chair at Columbia College. A Neo-Orthodox Feminist Challenge to Critical Hermeneutics.......2005-11-24

Bread Not Stone:
This collection of essays, were written between 1979 and 85 by one of the leading exegetes, who pioneered Feminist theologians to launch a challenge to the patterns and critique the traditions of patriarchal exegesis. The essays and speech, which dealt with the feminist liberation struggle to Biblical interpretation do not engage in the theory or practice of exegesis, with a minor exception. Sch-Fiorenza's follows from her earlier book In Memory of Her, which tackled this issue. Pheme Perkins comments, "These essays do a much better job than that book does in explaining the method behind the practice."
Sch-Fiorenza Hermeneutic:
Schüssler Fiorenza does not support treating the Bible as a timeless archetype, but calls for "re-visioning the Bible as-prototype." The required revision will do justice to the churches; once our experience is the 'canon' for evaluating Scripture, and the Bible is critically scrutinized in its light. She stresses, "No biblical patriarchal text that perpetuates violence against women, children, or 'slaves' should be accorded the status of divine revelation if we do not want to turn the God of the Bible into a God of violence."
Her conclusion is clear; a feminist critical hermeneutic "does not appeal to the Bible as its primary source but begins with women's own experience and vision of liberation."
Challenge of Feminist Biblical Interpretation:
A feminist hermeneutic would argue that she cannot be content with any that perpetuate patriarchal domination and hierarchy. We must unmask them as texts promoting patriarchal violence. The biblical text must be evaluated in the light of feminist struggle for women freedom and identity. Phyllis Trible, in her 'Texts of Terror', published same year, expressed those non accepted notions; "Sadly, the scriptures of faith have failed to perceive and interpret the nuances of this story [tragedy of the daughter of Jephthah].
Feminist Theology as Liberating:
Sch-Fiorenza argues, women can only discover God's grace and presence in their struggle for liberation, as Dr. Perkins has concluded, "That feminist hermeneutics must part company even with liberation theology. The latter can indeed find a well-established 'option for the poor' as a principle of biblical faith and can claim obedience to biblical revelation for its projects of social justice."
Pioneering Theologian:
Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza, [Theologicum (MDiv), Lic. Theol., U. of Würzburg, Dr. Theol., U. of Münster] is Professor of Divinity, Harvard, a cofounder and editor of the Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion and a coeditor of Concilium. She was elected the first woman president of the Society of Biblical Literature. She has done pioneering work in biblical interpretation and feminist theology, and is one of the first advocates of Feminist theology, through feminist critical hermeneutic, she contributed to changing the face of theology, and influence many others contemporary liberation voices.
Very Powerful and Scholarly Work!.......2001-07-25
This is going to be a combination rating. First of all, in content Fiorenza's book is easily 5 stars. She is exceptionally insightful into the process and presuppositions of biblical interpretation. One important stance that I appreciate is her argument that no interpretation of the biblical author's intended historical meaning is unbiased (like most claim to be). In other words, it's not possible for anyone interpreting the Bible to arrive at an objective historical evaluation of the text. Why? Because both the biblical authors and the Bible's interpreters are framed by their own social and political status. We must recognize this for two reasons. One, to see that the biblical culture and all mainstream interpretation comes from men, which subconsciously supports male dominance. And two, to hear the voices of women, those submerged in the biblical story and those who have not participated in biblical interpretation. When we hear all people's voices, especially those of the oppressed, we can free the biblical text from existing as historical "stone" to speak to us today as "bread" to the equality and justice that God intends!
As for readability this work is usually difficult going, and here I can only give it 3 starts. This is a very scholarly piece and requires a lot of patience for the average reader (like myself). Make sure you read the 1995 reprint of the book, which contains an Afterword that is very helpful in summing up her takes and includes her reflections on reviews of the book. If I were just starting out on this quest, this isn't the first book on biblical interpretation I'd read. Maybe start out with an easier work like Feminist Biblical Interpretation by Letty Russell, and especially Fiorenza's article in it.
All in all this is a great book. I feel fortunate to grasp probably only a small part of what she is thinking. I will be reading her follow-up books to this one: But She Said and Sharing Her Word. If you have patience, you will be truly blessed by Fiorenza's powerful insight into biblical interpretation, and you will see that the Bible from the eyes of women is equally as valid as from the eyes of men, and must be heard! (And if anyone out there knows how to get any of her lectures on tape, please let me know.)

This book portrays how participatory inquiry in a critical hermeneutic tradition moves the research process for social scientists from an epistemological place to an ontological event. Part One offers a critique of the technical, intellectual, and advocacy research enterprises and provides the reader a segue to a philosophical and historical discussion of critical hermeneutics. The discussion, in Part Two, lays the foundation for an ontologically-based field research protocol. In Part Three, the questions of research topic, research categories, questions and conversations, selection of participants, entree, background of researcher, data collection and analysis, and learning and community are discussed from a theoretical and applied perspective with examples drawn from selected field projects. This book draws on works by Ricoeur, Gadamer, Habermas, R. Bernstein and C.A. Bowers. The research conversation based in the notion of "play" marks the researcher and research participants as co-progenitors of the data which when transcribed becomes a text for analysis. This text has the possibility of opening reconfigured worlds in our organizations and communities. The notions of text, narrative, and mimesis are explicated in terms of data analysis with implications for action and social policy. An ontological understanding of language is at the heart of participatory inquiry in a critical hermeneutic tradition. It is through this understanding that we are endowed with the responsibility for creating just institutions.

She takes the reader through a study of hermeneutic philosophy, an interpretive foundation for social science research, reaching beyond traditional quantitative and qualitative methodologies. While this approach is about asking questions, it is also about discovering truths that lead to action. Herda has organized tough-to-read philosophy into an accessible progression for students and researchers of the interpretive practice.

This excellent book provides a theoretical and ontological underpinning for action in the real world of work, particularly work that cuts across diverse peoples and cultures. It gives a historical perspective of hermeneutics and provides a comprehensive critical hermeneutic framework for thinking about organizational, socioeconomic and cultural agendas that enables adults to work together and assess their actions. Not a book that assumes a neutral stance, it moves beyond mainstream epistemological models of development. This book contributes to philosophy, anthropology, organizational development and adult learning and includes specific ways to design inquiry and action programs that make a difference to leaders and researchers in the worlds of education, NGO's, business, government and international development.
