Product Great...Distributor Poor.......2005-09-23
I paid a premium for faster delivery. From the time the order was placed to the time It was delivered, was a week. If thats premium service then it's a joke. For as much as the shipping charges were I would have expected a much faster delivery. I actually did not have it when my class started which set me behind from day one.
For the younger studier of earth science.......2001-05-10
I used this book for a class I took. It is definitely for someone with no prior knowledge to eaerth science. This would include if you have taken any middle or high school level Geoscience class

Weak and Inconsistent.......2007-07-07
I have to disagree with all of the 5 star ratings of this book. I'm very happy people were able to find it useful, but I found this textbook to be confusing, frustrating, illogical, and weak on content. The examples are poor. The text often doesn't explain itself clearly. The problems are often extremely tedious, repetitive, and inconsistent to the chapter they are relating to. The writing quality is poor, and more than once I discovered formulas that were frustratingly inaccurate (symbols misused, numbers incorrect). Please do not write me off as a complainer, I got a good grade in the class and learned a lot about soils. I just expected a lot better quality and more detailed materials for the price of this rather thin textbook. In my opinion, Check back after a few editions.

Very Sucessful Book.......2003-01-28
This book is a very sucessful presentation of soil mechanics and foundation engineering. It builds up the concepts step by step. There are many good features of this books, as partly covered by reviewers below. The inclusion of critical state soil mechanics is a A+ for this book. In the light of this tutorial model, the stress-strain-strength behaviors of cohesive and cohesionless soils under drained or undrained condition are no longer a mystery to the learners. With this book, you can feel what soils feel in the field....

This soil mechanics book is one of the best put-together books I have come across. The CD included with the book makes it well worth the high cost. The video clips along with the animated demonstration media clips are extremely helpful in grasping the idea at hand. The follow-along labs. are very helpful. Design of flow nets is covered exceptionally well. Certainly one of my favorite textbooks.
Book Description
Foundations are a peculiarly American institution. They have been the dynamo of social change since their invention at the beginning of the last century. Yet they are cloaked in secrecy- their decision-making and operations are inscrutable to the point of obscurity-leaving them substantially unaccountable to anyone.
Joel Fleishman has been in and around foundations for almost half a century...running them, sitting on their boards, and seeking grants from them. And in this groundbreaking book he explains the history of foundations, tells the stories of the most successful foundation initiatives-and of those that have failed-and explains why it matters.
The baby boomer generation is going to participate in the largest transfer of wealth in history when it passes on its assets to its successor generation. The third sector is about to become more powerful than ever. This book shows how foundations can provide a vital spur to the engine of the American, and the world's, economy-if they are properly established and run.

Examining a Big but Little Known Area.......2007-03-09
Foundations are a subset of Non-Profit organizations that have become surprisingly big busines in the United States. Somewhere around 1/7th of the business in the country is conducted by these organizations. Somewhere around 1/9th of the workforce is employed by one. They have become an integral part of the American economy.
In this book Mr. Fleishman looks at Foundations (a number of which he has been associated as employee, trustee or some other capacity). He examines what makes a foundation successful, and how some have failed. He offers insight and advice on how to make a foundation more successful, and at the same time how foundations should have an obligation to become more accountable since they received special tax considerations from the Government. He suggests that this accountability should be done by the foundations voluntarily. However, Mr. Fleishman is an attorney and believes that if voluntary response is not forthcoming then new legal requirements should be placed upon them to require more openness.
Deserves serious reading from people who want to make a difference........2007-02-06
Joel Fleishman's book lays an excellent bedrock of history underneath its discussion of philanthropy as a great element of American tradition. We live in days of some staggering examples - from Warren Buffet's living bequest of billions, to the fine work of Bill and Melinda Gates - and many others. But rather than see this as some product of the new millennium - Fleishman shows how the new avatars of corporate generosity are following a fine tradition. More than this, the author shows that certain gifting strategies have been leveraged for huge social benefit. For those who are thinking - at whatever scale - of giving to support a cause, this book sets out the strategies that have produced most benefit. This is an excellent, thoughtful piece of work on a topic that currently has wide currency. Well worth reading.
Book Description
Using a design-oriented approach that addresses geotechnical, structural, and construction aspects of foundation engineering, this book explores practical methods of designing structural foundations, while emphasizing and explaining how and why foundations behave the way they do. It explains the theories and experimental data behind the design procedures, and how to apply this information to real-world problems.
Covers general principles (performance requirements, soil mechanics, site exploration and characterization); shallow foundations (bearing capacity, settlement, spread footings -- geotechnical design, spread footings -- structural design, mats); deep foundations (axial load capacity -- full-scale load tests, static methods, dynamic methods; lateral load capacity; structural design); special topics (foundations on weak and compressible soils, foundation on expansive soils, foundations on collapsible soils); and earth retaining structures (lateral earth pressures, cantilever retaining walls, sheet pile walls, soldier pile walls, internally stabilized earth retaining structures).
For geotechnical engineers, soils engineers, structural engineers, and foundation engineers.

Great for Reference.......2001-01-25
This book starts with a great review of the basics of soil mechanics, and then discusses a wide range of topics such as foundations, bearing walls, footings, deep footings, and many more. Unlike other books, this book is not strictly theory; you can easily apply and understand what this book teaches. It also provides good examples.
Thumbs Up!.......1999-12-03
This is the most practical and comprehensive source for understanding foundations and their design...
Book Description
This classic text takes an applied and computer-oriented approach to its topical coverage. The book is intended for one or two semester courses in biostatistics at the undergraduate or graduate level offered by departments of biostatistics, statistics, mathematics, nursing and other allied health disciplines, and is also used in some departments of forestry and animal husbandry. Nearly all the examples and exercises make use of real data from actual research projects and reports from health sciences literature. Where appropriate, Minitab, SPSS and SAS commands and printouts are included as part of the examples and solutions to exercises.

Helpful but technical.......2006-11-10
This book is extreamly helpful for academic research. It can be somewhat more technical than most people would need.
Not as impressive as I first thought.......2005-09-23
Daniel obviously knows his statistics; but, I wouldnt think that is too helpful for individuals reading or studying from his textbook.
The reasons are numerous, and all these reasons would reduce anyone's chances of solely using this book, or even using it at all.
The textbook is well organized, however Daniel's writing often is pedantic, repetitive (not in the helpful way) and ambiguous at best.
The examples and solutions occassionaly have serious errors in them which affect the overall outcome of the test (A second consideration is that the book is in it's 8th edition!!! therefore such errors are unacceptable for a person such as myself).
An example can be found on page 239 (example 7.3.2). The pooled variance, as calculated by Daniel is approximately off by 100 simply because he didnt give attention to dividing the numerator with the proper pooled D.F of the samples. The chapter ironically was on hypothesis tests, something extremely important to any line of empirically oriented statistics.
In Chapter 8; which is probably the most important chapter in Bistatistics (ANOVAs) he does not mention the relationship between MSW and sample SD. Also, his usage of Summation in formulas often are unnecessarily overcomplicated. Such is not even seen in professional journals.
I did like this textbook regardless of its many shortcomings, its not because I liked the author's style of writing. Its more or less the fact that my lecturer (I assume) used this book heavily in his lectures and so I used it as a supplementary text.
I would suggest, Chap T. Le's Introductory Biostatistics. However he goes too much into nonparametric methods and proportions and doesnt cocentration (to the degree I wanted) on continous data.
More robust and probably cost effect books are :Introductory Statistics for the Life Sciences by Samuels. But the Best book I have ever seen on the subject is "Introductory Biostatistics for the health sciences" By Chernick and Friis. The book is well priced and no portion of this book, I have seen as being useless.
Excellent Text for 2nd Statistics Class.......2004-10-25
I'm taking my first biostatistics class in medical school, but the text I am using in class (Rosner) has lost me. I subsequently borrowed Daniel's book from the library (only because it has 7th editions), and I am glad that I picked it! Daniel is a good writer. The book is well organized and laid out. Important concepts are emphased and explained with minimum mathematics involved. The well thought out examples are worth working through as well for clarification of the applications of important concepts. However, as a beginner in statistics, I was lost in the midst of mathematics on certain concepts (given that I have a relatively strong mathematics background) without really understanding the meaning of some very basic terms, like percentile, confidence intervals.
What I do is to read another reference book that explains the very basic concepts in plain English first before reading this text. I am currently using Munro's Statistical Methods for Health Care Research. While both of them cover the same set of concepts, Daniel gives me the mathematical and more advanced explainations compare to Munro.
Very Good.......2003-12-19
I have used this and other texts by Daniel over the years and I find you can not go wrong with his works. He is a no nonsense author and a very good writer who uses plenty of examples. Get his nonparametric book also.
Solid introductory reference.......2003-01-09
The title is very appropriate - this text provides a solid foundation in biostats. I used it for an intro course in grad school, and working through the text was very worthwhile. Previously cloudy concepts are now more clear, and I have a great reference for future use. More in-depth biostats deserves a consultation with a statistician, not a longer text. I agree with other reviewers that there are occasional mistakes (which need to be fixed - this is not even the first edition), but overall I would still highly recommend it.
Book Description
Written with the non-major/allied health student in mind, the authors use common, everyday analogies to explain the many difficult microbiology concepts. Unlike any other allied health microbiology textbook on the market, the art program showcases beautiful illustrations with the use of bold, primary colors. A taxonomic approach is used for the study of pathogens.

Book Description
Using Java(TM) 1.1, Java Software Solutions teaches beginning programmers how to design and implement high-quality object-oriented software. The authors emphasize problem solving through understanding requirements, exploring options, and designing conceptually clean solutions. John Lewis and Bill Loftus wrote this book from the ground up, taking full advantage of Java to teach introductory programming. Throughout the book, the authors intertwine the use of applets and applications to demonstrate computing concepts. Applets are introduced early, building on the excitement of the web, while applications are used for readers to gain a clear understanding of programming concepts.

Emphasis on beginning.......2007-06-25
In case you're doubting how much of a beginner's book this is, consider that the first chapter of this book is all about telling you what a computer is. If you have any experience writing any sort of script or program you will not want this book. If, like for me, it's required for a course, keep an eye on the bookstore's textbook buyback schedule.
Even once you have learned what's taught in this book, you will probably find it frustrating if you try to use it as a reference for Java syntax. Information about the language is dribbled out in bits and pieces with no clear way to find what you're looking for. Well, yes, there's a table of contents and an index, but you'll do better selling this book back and picking up Java In A Nutshell, 5th Edition once you have some familiarity with Java.
Excellent Textbook.......2007-03-07
For the price I wouldn't buy this book unless it was a textbook for a class or if you can find one used. That said, it is a great book for someone with a few Java basics under their belt. You could use it as your first Java book if you are a quick computer learner and can remain focused as the chapters are rather long and meaty. Each ends with a GUI section which could almost be a chapter on its own. The code runs well and is available for download. There are very few mistakes and/or jumping assumptions in Java learning although the complexity makes having an instructor to ask questions helpful. Basically it is a textbook for just after intro object programming college class and it does that very well.
Superb Book.......2007-01-04
Another great hit by Codemate. Best programming book for new programmers/students. Really goes step by step and gives adaquete information for newbies.
Great Introduction .......2006-11-05
Lewis & Loftus give the reader an excellent introduction to object oriented programming in Java. The very clear explanations as well as simple examples do an excellent job demonstrating many concepts to the reader. I recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn Java for the first time.
Be sure to buy the updated version (also on Amazon).......2005-09-13
There is an updated printing of this book that uses ISBN 0-321-32202-7. The updated printing (which corrects small but important changes from the final version of Java 5) also is called the 4th edition. The publisher added words "Java 5.0 Version" to the title listed in online stores, and added a leaf with the words "Covers Java 5.0" to the bottom right of the cover. Be sure to verify that you get this ISBN, and do not to buy an old printing that you can't return.

Book Description
This text introduces students to basic techniques of writing proofs and acquaints them with some fundamental ideas. The authors assume that students using this text have already taken courses in which they developed the skill of using results and arguments that others have conceived. This text picks up where the others left off -- it develops the students' ability to think mathematically and to distinguish mathematical thinking from wishful thinking.

A Pricey and Often Frustrating Introduction.......2005-07-17
I bought this book so I could self-teach myself a prerequisite course to an advanced mathematics requirement course. Therefore, I needed to learn the material as well as if I had taken a course using this book, although I did not have the requisite professor as a guide. That said, this book suffers from some obvious flaws.
As a transition book to higher mathematics courses, this book needs to accomplish a great deal. First and foremost, it needs to modify the apt math student from an elementary way of thinking about mathematics to a logical, adept, reflexive, adaptable way of thinking about mathematics. This is done through way of introducing the logic of certain mathematical foundations and then allowing the student to participate in proofs to verify the theorems. Most of the times the theorems are presented in an understandable way, and the authors do explain and illustrate many of them; however, the way they typed their proofs (and many of the practice problems use a demonstration proof as a guide), in clustered format, although often acceptable, was very hard to follow. Also, early in the book they explained the benefit of visual explanations of their concepts, so I found it frustrating when they sometimes (but almost seldom) visualize or explain the theorems in more mundane terms, especially when they do not even write the proof for the theorem in the book.
Maybe as an accompaniment to a course in foundational mathematics (what this book is designed for), this book can successfully supplement an instructor; however, as a guide to someone self-taught (especially for the expense of buying), this book could improve a great deal.
effective but not thorough.......2005-03-28
I am using this book as my text for my upper mathematics bridge class. The text is certainly useful, but often I am frustrated by the lack of clear explanations for theorems, relegating them as exercises for the reader. I am not saying that the author should spoon feed the reader, but what do we do when we get stuck? For what we pay for this book, it certainly has some improvements to make.
A great read to see what lays ahead.......2003-08-28
I read and worked the problems in this book during my break as I transferred from a community college to a 4-year university, and found it very helpful in introducing me to all the fancy terminology, notation and basic proof writing that I was intimidated by. I found the problems to be hard enough to be challenging, but also neither impossibly hard nor hinging on a silly trick.
If you are a eager HS student, or a curious college student, get this book and work the problems.
Great introduction to mathematics.......2001-09-21
I bought this book for a course in classical algebra. I found the book well explained and well done. It contains a lot of exercise and example of differents difficulty. It covers logic, set, relation, induction, function, combinatorial proofs, countable sets and uncountable sets, groups and some calculus. The book has a lot of subject in it and it make it very flexible. If you want to ontroduce yourself to mathematics, I would recommend this book if you want to spend some money.
An excellent introduction to mathematical logic!.......2000-06-01
This book provides an excellent introduction to mathematical logic, set theory, graph theory, number theory, and more -- everything which is "neat" in higher math.
I would strongly recommend this book before any proof-based math class. The authors explain methods of proofs very well, and give some principles universally important in mathematics -- Zermelo's thm., Dirichlet's prin., and such.
The exposition in this book is great. If this is your first exposure to, for instance, the proofs by induction, this probably provides an excellent description of what's going on and how it works, why it works.
The book is slim (at least, the 1992 ed.) and not inexpensive. However, the authors' conversational tone makes it very approachable; at the same time, they are mathematically rigorous and very thorough.

Book Description
"Burke manages to integrate the extant theories of organizational change with case examples that make the theories come alive. He skillfully combines his strong interests in the abstract with his four decades of practical, personal experience in facilitating large-scale organizational change efforts. This book is clearly the work of a master at the peak of his career."
âLEONARD D. GOODSTEIN, Consulting Psychologist and Former CEO, American Psychological Association
Organizations change internally at a much slower pace than the external environments in which they function, and must continually evolve to keep pace. Further, these environments are in constant flux and challenge the assumption of continuity on which organizations are created and developed. Now more than ever, there is a clear need for a greater understanding of how to understand, lead, manage, and change organizations.
Organization Change: Theory and Practice provides an overview of the theoretical and research foundation for our current understanding of organization change, including the nature and types of change organizations experience. The author reviews various models, including a new model developed by Burke-Litwin, and uses cases to demonstrate how these models can be used to diagnose change issues in organizations. Emphasizing planned, revolutionary change over the typical gradual, evolutionary change organizations experience, Burke combines and integrates theory and research with application for insight into all aspects of organization change.
This book will prove invaluable to students and professors of MBA-level courses in organization change, organization psychology, industrial psychology, and organizational behavior. It will also benefit professionals and consultants in need of a reference for analyzing organizations.
About the Author:
W. Warner Burke is Professor of Psychology and Education and coordinator for the graduate programs in Social-Organizational Psychology, in the Department of Organization and Leadership, at Teachers College, Columbia University, in New York. He is also senior advisor to the organization and change strategy practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.Â

There has to be something better then this book .......2006-02-25
I had to buy this book and use it for a class. I find the book to be filled with a wide range of simple common sense theories. It is not a book I would recommend to anyone if they are looking for clear and valuable techniques to utilize there has to be something better then this.
comprehensive text on change.......2002-12-01
So much of the literature on change is often a simplistic cookbook claiming change can be executed in 7 easy steps. Burke provides the reader with the theoretical background and takes one through the multiple considerations when executing organizational change. I applaud Dr Burke for revealing the complexity of change and providing insights into the practice of change management. This is a primer for all who are engaged especially in large scale transformational change as it clearly provides one the background to help one educate others on why the change agent does what she does.
