Book Description
What does it take to pass the Critical Care certification exam? Start here…
You hold in your hands the best-available preparation for Critical Care certification through the CCRN exam.
Critical Care Nursing Certification: Preparation, Review & Practice Exams is your complete, step-by-step guide that lays out everything you need to know to pass the exam that's offered by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN).
Clearly formatted, easy to read, and comprehensive in scope, Critical Care Nursing Certification accurately approximates the actual content of the exam. The updated edition now integrates test questions with the text, so you can take a practice exam related to a specific topic without having to purchase a second book. In addition, “Editor's Note” features will explain changes to the exam, highlight what's important, and give you an idea of the number of questions to expect for a given topic.
Features
- New part on “Synergy”-woven throughout the CCRN exam, this subject area is truly essential, based on changes to the exam
- An invaluable section on multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS)
- Updated coverage of mechanical ventilation (including low volume ventilation) and the weaning portion, plus a much-needed emphasis on protocols; a closer look at acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS); new details on asthma; and newer diagnostics in pulmonary embolism
- Update to the renal replacement therapy area, including incisive coverage of continuous veno-venous hemodialysis (CVVHD)

excellent!.......2007-06-27
fast shipping!!came on time and the book was as described! i'd defitely order from them again.
Slightly Dry.......2007-02-10
I have been working through this review. I find the helpful hints interesting. I wish the author would just leave out information that is not really applicable to the exam. I am sure that it is good to know these things, but if it isn't needed for the exam why clutter my brain with it?? The knowledge base is good. I have not found any obvious errors.
Best review book I've found!.......2007-01-30
The first review book I bought was so dry and boring that I couldn't get through the first chapter. This book was easy to read and understand. It broke the content into seperate subjects so that it was easy to focus on my weak points. Also, at the start of each chapter it tells you how the test is weighted, so that you concentrate on the subjects that will have the most questions on the test. At the end of each section there are review questions for practice.
The only thing that would make this book better is if it had the practice questions on CD.
And I passed CCRN on the first try!
Good resource for a thorough CCRN review.......2006-12-07
I used this book as another reference for my CCRN review and I find the information very detailed and helpful , such as laboratory values (Renal, Hematology and Electrolytes), and predicting location of myocardial infarction and other dysrhythmias using 12-lead EKG.
Also, my area of weakness is Neurology and this book helped me with the information I needed for the examination. The practice questions are great and so are the comprehensive tests.
It would have been great if the book came with a CD software containing more practice exams.
Nevertheless, I passed the CCRN exam with the help of this book!

Best Resource for Studying for the Certification Exam........2007-05-24
I've used this book twice as a study aid for the certification exam. I thought it was very useful the first time I took the test.
I now had to re-certify by exam (5 years later) and decided to use this book (and the CD) as my primary resource, and boy did that strategy pay off. The language (unlike other resources I used) is similar to that used on the exam, and the random mix of questions was also similar, so I was able to identify my areas of weakness.
It helps to take sample exams repeatedly to build up the mental stamina required for the actual test.
All in all, I would highly recommend this book for potential certification exam candidates.
A must-have for the ACNP candidate.......2003-04-26
This review book reminds me of the NCLEX reviews. It is concise, divides the questions into the key content areas and provides answers with the rationale.
Of particular help is the second chapter "Test-taking skills and designing your study plan". Here the authors give you seven strategies for test-taking. Included are the points "Understanding and analyzing the anatomy of a test question" and the ever helpful "Selecting the best answer when you do not know the answer". There is an analysis of learning styles and an example schedule for preparation.
This review has been very helpful in lowering my test anxiety while in school. Too bad Amazon won't package it with Gawlinski and Hamwi at a reduced price ;-) ;-) This one really complements G&H. I can't give it 5 stars until I take the certification exam!

Critical Care Examination Review Revised, 3rd Edition.......2007-08-12
Not as good as Pass CCRN in this RN's eyes: It doesn't have as easy access CD rom and it has an even worse rationale and nothing in terms of textbook style information. Although Pass CCRN is not too much better, it does have some textbook material to go over.
Way too much information.......2007-05-17
Unless you have a lot of time to read this but this book went into too much detail. Not very helpful in preparation of the test. More like a CCRN Encyclopedia if you ask me.
excellent way to prepare for CCRN.......2006-12-05
I took the CCRN exam yesterday and I passed it! The book prepared me on how to approach the CCRN exam in a very logical manner. The questions on each system are tough but the explanation behind each answer gives you an insight on each body system and how they interact with each another. I highly recommend this book to anyone who will take the CCRN exam!
Critical Care Examination Review.......2006-11-10
The book is an excellent resource for the actual CCRN exam. Several questions were very similar to those I encountered on the actual exam recently. A valuable purchase for anyone thinking of or preparing for the CCRN certification.
Excellent Study Resouce for PCCN Exam too.......2006-01-20
Even thought the book title said CCRN but I used it for my PCCN exam and it works well. I pass with one shot. They are many questions in the book that related to the exam. I recommend any one who will take PCCN but this book and practice the question of it. If you do not understand the explaination for the question go back to your text book or the reliable internet resource for further study. It is small book but very helpful.

Not Enough.......2001-07-05
It all depends on what kind of review book you are looking for to study for the CCRN. This book is generalized and broad. I prefer study guides that do not make you go to other references to relearn what you need to know. I like it all in one place.
Just Right!.......2000-07-04
I am studing with ICU nurses for the CCRN exam and we have a variety of books to study from. This book is very straight forward and to the point. It is in outline form with just enough info to either confirm your knowledge basis or to let you know that you need to "dig" for more. Each and every section is correlated with the outline from AACN for studing for CCRN exam. The rest is up to me - see you at the testing center.

CCRN REVIEW.......2007-08-28
Good Study Guide. I would suggest this book after you have taken a CCRN review course. This book is just questions, so if you need to know in what area you need more practice this book is not for you. Overall okay book.
Core Review for Critical Care Nursing.......2006-11-05
Exactly as expected. Very helpful in preparing for the exam.
Core Review for Critical Care Nursing.......2006-03-09
The book came on time and is in good condition. This is an excellent way to shop.Thank you.
business as usual.......2003-01-17
Once again it seems all the discarded, poorly worded and confusing questions continue to make it in this edition of "Core Review". It adds a level of frustration and imparts a sense of impending failure to anyone attempting to study for the CCRN.

Critical Care Nursing.......2000-08-01
I have been using Lippincott's review series since I started nursing school last year. These books are a must have! They are to the point, tells exactly what you need to know and they have review questions. These books are small and weigh almost nothing so they are easy to keep with you. I will be starting Critical Care which will be my last semester! I am so glad that Lippencott came out with Critical Care Review just in time. I haven't started the new semester yet but in my spare time I have been reading through the chapters. I highly reccommend these series! I even got my other classmates hooked too!
This book is indispensible!.......2000-07-05
I purchased this book about 4 months ago in order to have a quick reference available to me at work. I am a new graduate ICU RN in a VERY busy trauma center, and this book has everything I need to help refresh my memory quickly when I need it. All of the information in this book is organized system by system, so it's easy to find what you need. The information itself is "just the facts." Everything important regarding every subject pertinent to the ICU, including treatment modalities and nursing diagnoses for any medical condition you can think of! Critical things to remember are in bold lettering, so they really stand out on a page. There are illustrations to help "drive home" more complex concepts and procedures, along with countless graphs and tables of information. Also, this book provides review questions at the end of each section for us motivated readers who like to test ourselves. I'm SO glad I found this book. I take it with me every shift, and have even caught veteren RN's thumbing through it, which tells me that it's a great resource for anyone...whether you're still a student, a new graduate, or have been an RN for 20 years. It's also small enough to carry with you anywhere...and at the risk of sounding weird, I do pretty much take it everywhere I go. I LOVE this book!

Customer Reviews:
Out-of-Date and Inaccurate.......2006-08-26
Nursing test study guides must provide correct information not just to help the reader pass the test, but to aid the reader in improving nursing care.
This book's Q&A format will not aid the nurse in improving nursing care. For example on page 40 the the answer to the question "What is the suspected diagnosis if a patient's blood pressure drops significantly with administration of nitroglycerin in the setting of an acute MI?" is "Inferior wall MI with right ventricular involvement." A better answer would include the recommendation of volume replacement and why instead of addressing the treatment under the cardiogenic shock question.
I checked the copyright date twice to confirm this was published in 2006 before I decided to write a negative review.
The book uses AHA 2000 guidelines instead of the 2005 guidelines which were widely available by August 2005. For examples: The book recommends the non-current practice of ventilation to compression ratio of 1 to 5 instead of the current 2 to 30; the old compression rate of 80-100 instead of the current compression rate of 100; and stacking of 3 shocks instead of 1 shock then start CPR.
What is it with the authors love of Lidocaine with all those questions about it? Lidocaine is NOT a first line drug choice for anything cardiac, thus it is NOT the treatment of choice for hemodynamically stable ventricular tachycardia (page 48). Nor is the drug "likely to be ordered" after " a patient is brought back to a normal sinus rhythm following defibrillation" (page 63).
In the answer about the preferred agent of choice in treatment of atrial fibrillation ( page 51), procainamide has not been recommended 2nd line treatment for 6 years or more.
Amrinone has not been that drug's name since 2000 - try using Inamrinone as the correct drug name. (Name was changed because of the confusion with amiodarone.)
What is with the questions about using LDH in diagnosing AMI in these days of bedside Troponin testing?
The Q&A on page 60 about "What is the treatment of Torsades de Pointes?" really misses the point about using magnesium. This poor answer was my breaking point and why I felt this book needs a warning label. Of course any books that list pressure on the eyeball as a common Valsalva maneuver, page 61, is asking for lawyers to attack.
A book that claims to address CCRN test should employ a better editor. For examples, EKG should be ECG, Troponia is the Spanish spelling for Troponin, and using "b-blockers" mixed with beta symbol-blockers mixed with "beta-blockers".
Lots of great bite sized bits of knowledge!.......2006-08-24
I think the previous reviewer was way to harsh... or possibly, arrogant? Hmmm... most of the info in this book is very signifigant, and unlike many review books, it is not weighed down by too much technically verbose fill. The book is written by the MD and nurses! I admit, he does throw some obviously useless bits of trivia (from a nursing standpoint) in occassionally, but most of it is really quite nice and well done. We should praise MDs who WANT to help nurses, not whip them!!! Anyhow, this is a really nice relaxing book to read through, one that allows you to learn without getting a big headache. I recommend it.
Look at the authors!!.......2006-07-24
Since when does a MD know what a nurse does? I was looking for a review book to help me update my CCRN review class, this is not it.
Only 20 of the "rapid fire" topics were even listed on the exam.
This book and the "ER Pearls" are a waste of money.
