Book Description

The bravery displayed by our soldiers at war is commonly recognized. However, often forgotten is the courage required by veterans when they return home and suddenly face reintegration into their families, workplaces, and communities. Authored by three mental health professionals with many years of experience counseling veterans, Courage After Fire provides strategies and techniques for this challenging journey home.

Courage After Fire offers soldiers and their families a comprehensive guide to dealing with the all-too-common repercussions of combat duty, including posttraumatic stress symptoms, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. It details state-of-the-art treatments for these difficulties and outlines specific ways to improve couple and family relationships. Courage After Fire also offers tips on areas such as rejoining the workforce and reconnecting with children.

5 out of 5 stars 2 tours and it nearly killed me.......2007-10-04

It wasn't the war, it was when I returned home and could not function. I applaud this book for it's intent and gratitude that it gives to our young warriors. It is one of the few written for "our" generation. Thank you

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-01

I was skeptical when purchasing this book, but the topics are discussed in such a way that you do not feel like you're reading "self-help". The focus is not on PTSD (although that is one of the topics covered), but more on a healthy transition from a chaotic environment. I would recommend this to any serviceman, spouse, parent, or close friend.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling and pragmatic.......2007-05-13

As a disability service provider, I found this book particularly helpful. It is practical and to the point. Veterans can find tips on everything from how to sleep better to how to relax and cope with stressors. The triggers of anxiety are explained well, as are the ways veterans typically handle their pain. At the end of each chapter are helpful tips for family members. After I read it, I ordered ten copies of this book to give away to student veterans and their families.

5 out of 5 stars Courage After Fire.......2007-04-02

Books such as these are essential for the friends and family of returning Veterans of Foreign Wars, as well as for those who have experienced war firsthand.

5 out of 5 stars Very Accurate and Helpful to returning troops & families.......2007-01-06

This is a must read for all service members exposed to combat and or traumatic situations. It will help individuals and families adjust to civilian life again. It should be required reading by the Department of Defense. Great Job

Book Description

How exactly has San Francisco's urban landscape changed in the hundred years since the earthquake and cataclysmic firestorms that destroyed three-quarters of the city in 1906? For this provocative rephotography project, bringing past and present into dynamic juxtaposition, renowned photographer Mark Klett has gone to the same locations pictured in forty-five compelling historic photographs taken in the days following the 1906 earthquake and fires and precisely duplicated each photograph's vantage point. The result is an elegant and powerful comparison that challenges our preconceptions about time, history, and culture. "I think the pictures ask us to become aware of the extraordinary qualities of our own distinct moment in time. But it is a realization that a particular future is not guaranteed by the flow of time in any given direction." So says Mark Klett discussing this multilayered project in an illuminating interview included in this lavishly produced volume, which accompanies an exhibition at The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
After the Ruins, 1906 and 2006 features a vivid essay by noted environmental historian Philip Fradkin on the events surrounding and following the 1906 earthquake, which he describes as "the equivalent of an intensive, three-day bombing raid, complete with many tons of dynamite that acted as incendiary devices." A lyrical essay by acclaimed writer Rebecca Solnit considers the meaning of ruins, resurrection, and the evolving geography and history of San Francisco.

5 out of 5 stars Photos from the 1906 Fire (Earthquake) of San Francisco.......2007-06-26

I received this book along with another one called: "Denial of Disaster: The Untold Story and Photographs of the San Francisco",by Gladys Hansen.

Both books are wonderful to read together because the book by Hansen describes what happened during and after the 1906 Fire (and/or 1906 Earthquake), and this book by Fradkin shows more photos from the tragic event. Thus, I recommend both books highly.

5 out of 5 stars An important documentation of how urban disasters change urban landscapes.......2006-08-19

AFTER THE RUINS: 1906 AND 2006 - REPHOTOGRAPHING THE SAN FRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE AND FIRE has been a century in the making, and deserves a spot on any collection purported to be even halfway authoritative about San Francisco or California history. Its purpose seemed simple: to capture the meaning and impact of the 1906 quake through juxtaposing 'before' and 'after' photos, right down to the very angle of original landscapes. The idea was to also document how the city's landscape changed because of and since the quake: black and white and duotone photos by photographer Karin Breuer compliment essays by Philip L. Fradkin and Rebecca Solnit, longtime writers on California history, compliment an outstanding survey. College-level holdings on urban planning and design also should make this a special pick: it's an important documentation of how urban disasters change urban landscapes.

    Book Description

Firefighters have long been among the most admired men and women in our culture, and recent events have shown how well-placed that admiration is—adding fuel to our innate fascination with stories about fire and the people who risk their lives to fight it. Some of our best writers are drawn to the subject of firefighting, and over the years they have created a rich body of literature. Fire Fighters offers the most exciting and compelling stories from that body of work, including accounts of devastating fires from New York to Yellowstone, as well as smaller blazes that have turned particularly ugly or dangerous. Selections include Jimmy Breslin’s eulogy for the men who died in the famous Chelsea fire, Norman McLean on the Great Gulch forest fire that killed nine young smokejumpers, John McPhee on fires in the Pine Barrens, Studs Terkel’s interview with a fire fighter, and riveting accounts of the FDNY’s role in the September 11 tragedy and its aftermath. 16 black-and-white photos are also featured.

2 out of 5 stars Not What the Title Implies.......2003-05-24

I was disappointed in this book. I found the majority of material to be related to 9/11 or to wildland firefighting while the cover implies it covers all ranges of firefighting. The material included is good...it just spends very little time on structural firefighting and the men who do that job. What time it does dedicate to it is mostly in the form of re-hash of previous material; Report from Engine Co 82, Working etc. There are better books out there, unless you are interested in wildland firefighting. If you are, then this is one of the better books on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars One of the series' best!.......2002-07-07

You'll have trouble putting this one down. 21 strong selections look at firefighting from a variety of angles. I read a lot of 'fire books' but the editor found plenty I had not seen. 8 of the 21 stories are stand-alone articles, not excerpts - 2 about 9-11 that will just tear you up. The focus is split about 50/50 between city firefighting and forest firefighting, with a couple essays from folks who don't actually fight fires themselves, but must live with those who do. You'll read about a lot of brave men who never came home from their fires and you can't help but pause at the end of most of the selections. This book is especially relevant in the summer of 2002 with wildfires devouring Arizona and Colorado - what a way to better understand the human aspect of what you see on the news, and even learn something. Willis has chosen powerful, gut-wrenching, tear-jerking stuff from sources you haven't seen and you or your firefighter will stay up to read this one cover to cover.

4 out of 5 stars Looking forward to the next book.......2004-02-11

At first, I was a bit overwhelmed by the numerous characters and plot lines. But it didn't take long before the people and plots really drew me in. This book was hard to put down, and I'm looking forward to the next one. I found it an interesting premise -- three siblings facing the mistakes they'd made and wanting to change their lives -- after an event that made them all too aware of their mortality. Again, I'm looking forward to seeing where the next book takes them.

    5 out of 5 stars A Very Good Read.......2004-01-04

I found this book to be a compelling read in that it shows how a near disaster for three siblings changes their outlook on their lives.

It makes them look closer at where they are - emotionally, sometimes physically - and re-evaluate where they would like to be.

The book shows the characters as human in their imperfections and dealings not only with their family dynamics, but also within the dynamics of their jobs and community.

3 out of 5 stars Will tug on your heart strings..........2003-12-11

One inferno makes the three Malvaso siblings stop and take stock of their lives. Each of them; Mitch, Jenny, and Zach, has made a mess of the relationships in their lives. Zach, the reckless playboy, realizes it is time to try and salvage his relationship with his kids, and maybe his ex if he can get lucky. Jenny feels time passing her by, and decides she wants a child, but not from an impersonal sperm donor. She turns to her best friend. As she and Grady consider parenthood, a platonic favor takes on a new intenisity. For his part, Mitch decides to try and save his difficult marriage and be a better father. The only problem is a young woman has come to town, determined to start a new life and actualize a dream. That dream will bring Megan into close contact with Mitch. This will be the one time a headache might lead to romance rather than detering it. All of the siblings hopes and dreams, however, will be in jeopardy every time the firebell rings.

*** Continuing her tradition begun at Harlequin of always writing a moving and action filled romance, Ms. Shay begins a new series that will tug on readers' hearts. She deftly balances multiple storylines with characters you can recognize from real life and care about. ***

5 out of 5 stars Shay at her best!!.......2003-11-13

After a devestating fire, Mitch, Jenn, and Zach Malvaso vow to change their lives for the better. Mitch decides that he either has to make a serious commitment to making his marriage work or call it quits, Jenn decides she wants a baby, and Zach wants his wife back.

Megan Hale moved to Hidden Cove to escape the demons chasing after her. After her husband died in the line of duty and her father only a short time later, Megan knew that she had to leave the big city scene. She has finally found peace in the little town that is just like family. Her attraction to Mitch is as unexpected as it is complicated. Vowing never to be the 'other woman', Megan is adamament about not admitting her feelings for Mitch, and he feels the same way. This book is overcoming the trials of life and falling in love when you least expect it.

Although the story revolves mostly around Mitch and Megan, Shay has subplots with the other siblings that grab the reader and don't let go. I can't wait until her next book in this series comes out. I never understood exactly how much a firefighter risked until I read this book. The things that a firefighter has to know, along with the risks they take for strangers is humbling.

The emotion in this book is so overwhelming at times that I felt like crying. This is a superbly written book that I would highly recommend!

4 out of 5 stars homage to rescue workers.......2003-11-06

Near New York City, the Hidden Cove Fire Department responds to the dangerous Sinco fire. Three Malvaso firefighting siblings become trapped inside, but ultimately are rescued. Jenny insists that she, Mitch and Zach pledge to change their messed up personal lives as each one realizes how close to death they came.

Six months later, the three remain on the job, but carry mental scars from the Sinco fire. The vow has not been met.

Jenn tells her platonic duplex house partner Grady O'Connor that she wants his baby through artificial insemination. She refuses to marry as she failed at that once. Grady also has relationship problems that haunt him.

Zach wants to remarry his ex wife Angela, who he treated very badly. He feels jealous when she goes on a date with an assistant principal. However, he is spending quality time with his two preadolescent sons.

Mitch remains in an ugly marriage for the sake of his two teenage children. Newly arrived Detective Megan Hale suggests to Mitch that they need to start a camp to help the children of deceased emergency workers. He loves the idea, but worries about his attraction to Megan.

Though the multiple subplots can be overwhelming at times, readers will appreciate the powerfully written terse emergency situations. The Malvasi clan and the other key characters, except Mitch's out of control wife, seem genuine in and out of emergency scenarios. Kathryn Shay pays homage to rescue workers with this exhilarating tale that demands a sequel starring Zach and a firewoman who saved his life.

      Book Description

In her latest book, Kristina Borjesson once again leaves pundits, media critics, and Monday-morning quarterbacks behind. Zeroing in on a stunning lineup of first-hand sources, she presents a unique and utterly fascinating record of self-examination by some of America's top working journalists.

Focusing on the post 9/11 crisis period, Borjesson has interviewed ABC's Ted Koppel, Hearst Newspaper's Helen Thomas, Paul Krugman of the New York Times, Barton Gellman and Walter Pincus of the Washington Post, Associated Press President/CEO Tom Curley, Harpers publisher John MacArthur, Peter Arnett, and many others. This collection of masterful interviews unveils a journalistic environment that rivals any long-running soap opera on television. Filled with astonishing personal stories, conflict, and drama, Feet to the Fire gives readers the rare opportunity to walk a mile in the shoes of this nation's most powerful journalists and news executives. Most of them have spent long stretches of their professional lives in what can only be described as pressure-cooker environments ranging from deadly war zones to high-rise corporate offices.

As a serious, first-hand account of contemporary mainstream journalism, the book has no equal. Mindful of the broader historical context and the value of comparing the coverage of recent conflicts to Vietnam War coverage, Borjesson has included long interviews with Vietnam-era reporters who are still working today, like Peter Arnett. Arnett won a Pulitzer Prize as an Associated Press reporter in Vietnam, was CNN's star war correspondent during the first Gulf War, and became a lightning rod while reporting on the second Gulf War.

As an oral account of the current era of crisis, as a deeper and far more insightful view of this nation's most accomplished messengers and the landscape in which they operate, Feet to the Fire is nothing short of a tour-de-force.

Interview subjects include: Ted Koppel, Helen Thomas, Tom Curley (President/CEO Associated Press), Peter Arnett, Paul Krugman (New York Times), Barton Gellman and Walter Pincus (Washington Post), Deborah Amos (NPR war correspondent), Jon Alpert (independent producer/cameraman), John MacArthur, Tom Yellin (executive producer for Peter Jennings), Chris Hedges, and James Bamford (National Security reporter).

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very demanding, but read it nonetheless.......2006-09-21

Quite frankly, I don' think I've ever read a books as important as Feet to the Fire. At least not while trying to make sense of the contemporary conflict between the West (i.e. North America) and the Middle East with its numerous Muslim countries and inhabitants.

In this thorough 627 pages long book, Kristina Borjesson interviews the key players in the North American journalism and media scene. And she does so using straight-forward and honest questions. Except the current war against Iraq, which dominates the greater part of the book, other things such as the Bush administration, news reporting in the aftermath of 9/11, censorship in the media, and much, MUCH more. She's never afraid to ask both controversial and troubling questions, in other words those very questions that many people have been thinking about but never given an answer to. And luckily for us, the interviewees are willing to answer.

Of the book's more than 600 pages, most contains paragraph after paragraph of useful information. It goes without saying that a complete summary of a book with a scale as massive as this one can never be accomplished in a short book review, but one thing is certain: in case you do manage to read the entire thing you'll get a new and sometimes very troubling look at the state of world politics and warfare. Forget the impersonal images you've seen in the news and never mind the stale reporting coming out of most newspapers: here you'll hear from the people who've actually been there, who've been in the heat of gruesome battle; the people who'll tell you just how tragic this reality really is.

I could spend the rest of the night talking about all the big names and all the important stories found in the book, but then this review would probably never come to an end. Instead, I must emphasize the importance of Borjesson's work.

Because that's really what's so great about this book. Both Americans and Europeans (and, of course, the people in the Middle East) will learn things from reading it, but they will learn DIFFERENT things. Americans will learn how much of what they're being told by their own media often is just incorrect, but not only that, they'll also come closer to an understanding as to why people all over the world tend to hate them as much as they really do. It's a tough thing to learn, but reality is seldom beautiful, and it won't get a whole lot better with ignorance.

It's well-known that a great deal of the European population (along with the rest of the world) look at Americans as a whole as arrogant, fanatically patriotic, and extremely close-minded (even though all of us who've visited that country know this is not the case with every single American), and Feet of the Fire will help explain why these twisted images have become so prevalent.

You won't finish this book in an afternoon while relaxing under the sun at your local beach. It's a very demanding book that you'll have to devote a lot of hours to, but please, don't let this scare you from buying it and reading it. It's much too important to miss.

5 out of 5 stars A Rare Look at the Media.......2006-08-15

As a broadcast journalist I read this book to understand how my colleagues could have been so laxed in reporting and investigating the issues, post 9/11, that led to war with Iraq. I came away not only with a greater understanding of those issues, but with insights both sobering and frightening about the profession I work in. This book is not just for journalists, but for anyone who believes in freedom of the press and for people who care to understand how things really get (or do not get) reported.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone puzzled by reporting in the USA.......2006-08-12

Author Borjesson strings together fascinating interviews. The words of David Martin(CBS) and Ted Koppel(ABC) go a long way to explain how most big media FAILED us in the march to war in Iraq.

Conversely, John MacArthur of Harpers, Chris Hedges at the NY Times, Juan Cole and James Bamford (among many) give insightful perspectives on US reporting.

Bamford is especially worthy of praise. His brutal honesty on the topic of Israeli misdeeds will irk some, but Bamford's words and his terrific piece of CURRENT reporting on efforts to start a war with Iran shows us that all is not yet lost when it comes to reporting what the public NEEDS to know.

5 out of 5 stars A solid, informative, behind the scenes look at journalism .......2006-08-09

In the interests of full disclosure, I worked as an editorial consultant on Feet to the Fire. Having said this, I can't begin to emphasize enough, how solidly reported, how thoroughly researched and how much care was taken with each and every interview in this book. I believe the book achieves an incisive and eye opening look at how the events of 9/11 affected 21 of the most renowned national security and war correspondents in the US. One of the things I like about the book is how you can pick it up, read any chapter, in any order, and you will be immediately drawn in to that individual journalists' mind set and point of view. In these days when greater transparency is a baseline requirement in journalism, Feet to the Fire really provides an important service and allows the American people to get inside the heads of the people who bring us the information without which the American democracy would not function.

      1 out of 5 stars Very unbalanced.......2006-08-06

This book has a bunch of interviews, so I would normally expect it to be okay. But it isn't. There are twenty-one chapters, and we see interviews with people such as Peter Arnett, Chris Hedges, Juan Cole, and many others.

Still, I'd like to focus on the interview with James Bamford, and the praise given for him. Bamford gets 48 pages, and that's not good. And I don't see any reasonable people balancing what he says in this book.

Bamford has written outrageously afactual and illogical nonsense about the USS Liberty. So it is no surprise that when in this book, Bamford is asked whether Israel is a touchy subject, he says that it is enormously so. And he complains that "you can't talk about Israel in the press without somebody going crazy." Of course, given what he says about Israel, I'm not surprised. And Bamford himself seems to be one of those who are going crazy.

When Bamford gets asked if the reason for all the sensitivity about Israel is that Israel is protecting our interests, he replies "What interests? They're the cause of all the problems."

That comment is, of course garbage. It is like someone with a fever calling a thermometer the cause of all the problems. Israel is a small nation that is under attack. It's not the cause of all the problems in the Middle East. And since it is not a cause of major problems there, pressuring Israel or destroying Israel will not solve anything.

A book that can be so misleading about this topic is tough to trust on anything. I don't recommend it.

      Book Description

In her stunning new novel, New York Times bestselling author Belva Plain has written a compelling story of family and fortune, beauty and betrayal. With unerring insight and emotional power, she penetrates a shattered marriage to explore one of the most provocative issues of our time.

What happens when the picture-perfect marriage dissolves? In her unsparing evocation of a family in crisis, Belva Plain goes to the heart of a marriage between a naïve young artist and her handsome physician husband. At first everything is idyllic. Then one terrible night she commits an act she will regret for the rest of her life. An act that gives her husband the ultimate weapon: blackmail. The price of his silence is uncontested custody of their two children.

When her own beautiful, angry mother wants to know why she won't fight for custody, she can give no answers. For she alone knows, or believes she knows, what really happened on that fateful night.

In a novel that is both provocative and heartbreaking, Belva Plain proves herself the writer who sets the standard for family stories, a novelist of incomparable depth and grace.

      1 out of 5 stars Too Slow.......2005-09-27

This has got to be one of the worst books I have ever read. It is too slow. The author tends to drag on each situation. I think the plot is good it was just not well written at all. I am struggling to finish it just because I am curious to see what happens with the children.

      1 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2004-11-01

I'll have to reserve a higher rating until I finish this saga. I think I will have to agree with the previous reviewer that gave a low rating. The dialog is so stilted I can't believe what I am reading. I AM a Belva Plain admirer, but her writing here leaves much to be desired.
Back to this unbelievable couple and their disolving marriage.

1 out of 5 stars Is Belva Plain kidding?.......2004-03-21

This book isn`t worth the paper it is written on!!It contained nothing of substance.Where did this couple live? What were their last names? What was a day like at home for the mother(Hyacynth)? What were her children like? What was important to her? These are just a few of the subjects not even touched upon by the author.I couldn`t get past the first 100 pages.I hav not read any of this authors other books since Evergreen, which I loved. This book was a waste of my time and money.I will not ever waste anymore money on this authors books.

This is the story of the marriage of Hyacinth and Gerald. Hyacinth is a romantic, naïve, young artist who believes in true love and in the integrity of Gerald; her new husband fresh out of medical school. Gerald has big plans for the future and a need for the society that Hyacinth's family can provide. Hyacinth's needs are those of any wide-eyed young girl who has lived in the shadow of a beautiful mother. She needs only the true love that she doesn't believe she truly deserves.

      5 out of 5 stars Engaging stuff.......2004-07-27

Azzarello could have easily written Batman/Deathblow: After the Fire as a standard superhero crossover, uniting Batman and Deathblow against a common foe while playing up the tensions created by their differing methods; to read some of the reviews on here, you'd think some people were disappointed that it wasn't. But what he has written is something much, much better.

Rather than write something that compromises, or alternates between the styles of Batman and Deathblow as comics, Azzarello has constructed a tightly-written noir story that shifts between the past and present as Batman and Deathblow try to piece the puzzle together 10 years apart. Instead of the typical approach to comic-book writing - where the characters are centerpieces, and the villians and worlds work around them - Batman and Deathblow are both players in something larger than them, and their respective personalities take a backseat to a mystery that may be too big for either of them.

That said, Azzarello has a handle on Batman's methods that make him a truly interesting character to watch - without giving away anything, it's safe to say he has a handle on the 'detective' aspect of the character, and isn't afraid to make use of Wayne's skills both in and out of the suit.

And no review would be complete without mentioning the art, which is fantastic; everything is immaculately detailed in browns and reds that give it a great atmosphere, and Batman himself has never looked better. The panelling, too, is visually arresting, and gives everything a great pacing.

Make no mistake - if you like your Batman with a good slice of 'detective,' Batman/Deathblow is worth not reading once but twice.

      3 out of 5 stars It's dark alright..........2004-02-11

The book is long on atmosphere and attitude but the actual story is pretty ordinary. There wasn't that much interaction between Batman and Deathblow, reminiscent of De Niro and Pacino's non-confrontation in Heat. It could've been great but in the end, it isn't.

1 out of 5 stars Boring, confusing and petulant noir.......2003-12-28

The story's dull. The scenes seem repetitive. The resolution and the time jumps are confusing and poorly indicated. Batman doesn't seem so much dark and driven as harried and annoyed. Don't buy this one. It's from the "if it's dark, it's brilliant" school of Batman comics; I thought we got over that in the mid-90's.

5 out of 5 stars Smell of Leather in Every Page.......2003-10-12

Brian Azzarello is out to redeem himself. After writing Cage and failing to bring out the best of that character, he comes in and takes on the Big Bad Bat. The result is perhaps one of the best well written and well drawn stories to come out from the Batman mythos for some time now. His Batman is dark, I'll give him that. Not just that, Azzarello doesn't shy using the Bat's alter ego, Bruce Wayne, in the main story too. While most writers can't help but bring up that Wayne is a facade to the Batman, Azzarello makes him play a pivotal role throughout the story. In fact, by the final chapter, there is no Batman in sight and all you contend with is having Bruce Wayne taking over the lime light.

One thing I loved about this book is the realism. Batman being afraid that if he ticks off the CIA, the Agency will be on him in full force and expose his true self. This goes beyond to root down the character in the "real" world. He didn't go, "Well let them, I'll show them who's boss!" His reply was much more collected and calculated. This is the Batman that we just love and I hope that this is the character that we get to see soon in the upcoming movie, not the Joel Shumacher character of the last two Batman movies.

The art? Nothing I can say can do the art justice. Nothing! Lee Bermejo captures Batman in so much good detail, you can honestly smell the leather off his Batsuit. The cape is not cartoony or Spawn long as artists just love doing. It is just right and it works to keep the premise of the story rooted down to reality. His Batman, although not commercial like Jim Lee's recent rendition, is this looming figure. Bermejo doesn't play much with the shadows, but still gives the character that dark feel to him. The art is very awe-inspiring.

With a story that shifts from flashback to present times, Azzarello creates a Batman that will stand the test of time as one of the ultimate renditions of modern times. He's got his work cut out for him, though, since he's going to be penning the regular series with the now classic HUSH storyline over.

4 out of 5 stars a sweet, thoughtful book on aging.......2007-01-21

After the Fire is a slow-paced, introspective little book that suffers from bait and switch marketing. The book description outlines a basic lesbian romantic plot: brokenhearted dumpee retreats to a beautiful location and meets a lovely but mysterious woman.

I would not be surprised if fans of Rule's other books thought they were purchasing a torrid lesbian romance--the packaging certainly leads you to think that's what this is. Instead, After the Fire is a character driven novel about the emotional lives of women in their youth, midlife, and older years with virtually no romantic story at all. I don't recall any of the many characters even going on a date. Furthermore, while one of the primary characters is a lesbian, almost all of the others are straight.

Having said all this, what the book does have is a moving story about dealing with grief, loss and aging. Half-Japanese Karen, the dumpee, moves to a mostly white, mostly straight island to lick her wounds a rebuild her sense of self. Along the way she meets women of all ages who gradually move from secondary character status to becoming a huge part of Karen's life. The multigenerational friendships that form are far from the usual mother-daughter bond. Very well drawn and probably my favorite part of this book. A warning: This is not an action-packed book. Nothing much happens to the women in this small town, but the characters are interesting enough to draw you in anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Reccommended Reading for Women of All Ages.......2006-01-21

One of the few books which I feel should be required reading for women of all ages. The story is about a group of women who all, for one reason or another are learning to live alone, rely on themselves while still making community for one another. They learn to find their strengths, come to terms with their limitations and thrive. A very positive read.

3 out of 5 stars After the Fire is good, wholesome reading.......2000-04-27

After the Fire is a book about life, death and love. It connects the older age group with the younger, showing what can be learned from someone with life experience. This book is wholesome reading anyone will enjoy.
