Depressed, overworked, or just feelin' old are common enough complaints. But when disparate symptoms such as joint pain, weight gain, and foggy-headedness join the ranks, it's time to think thyroid. As the "throttle" for the body's energy hormones, the thyroid affects every organ and cell; when it's in trouble, any variety of ailments--physical and mental--can occur. Trouble is, physicians are more likely to treat each symptom independently, with pill upon pill, rather than search for a root cause. Bolstered by 25 years of treating patients with low thyroid condition, husband-and-wife team Richard L. Shames, M.D., and Karilee H. Shames, R.N., Ph.D., ably explain the physical and emotional profiles of those diagnosed with the disease, why the proverbial deck is stacked against them, and how each patient can forge an effective path of treatment.

"Consider Thyroid Power a long, personal visit with a caring, prevention-oriented practitioner," state the authors. The journey begins with thyroid basics: how this little hormone-producing tissue operates, signs that things are amiss, how other illnesses compound the problem, and how to determine one's risk for hypothyroidism. Next, the Shameses discuss the labyrinth of diagnostic and treatment issues a patient must endure. Helpful and harmful supplements and environmental factors, repairing the immune system (the origin of thyroid troubles), and a rich, sensitive exploration of holistic healing nicely round out this valuable resource. A brief section titled "Show This to Your Doctor," penned by Richard, perfectly crystallizes the book and provides an effective tool for initiating a patient/physician dialogue. --Liane Thomas

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2007-06-27

I knew my infant son had a thyroid problem, my only problem was convincing the doctors there was a problem. This book is packet with great information and really got me up to speed on the thyroid. The only problem I had with the book was that there wasn't a section dedicated to pediatric thyroid problems and it doesn't list specific ranges for where the thyroid levels should be. Still this helped me do battle with the doctors and I got my son's treatment started.

5 out of 5 stars 10 STEPS TO PARADISE.......2007-06-20

I bought this book for my mother who had been diagnosed with thyroid problems. She was so relieved that outside of the quick treatment in the endocrinologist's office, she could, at her leisure, absorb the seriousness of her disease, be reassured she was not alone, and most of all that there were many others just like her ailing but with a road map to new health by truding the road to wellness together by following the ten steps in this book. With renewed determination, she is already onto step one and looking to step two.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book if you have hashimotos.......2007-06-14

I have been diagnosed with hashimotos for over 12months now and have been buying, borrowing and reading every book I can get my hands on. This book is the best of all I have read. It very comprehensively covers blending traditional medical solutions with "alternative" therapies to achieve optimal health and wellbeing.

5 out of 5 stars Most Comprehensive Book on Thyroid Disease.......2007-01-18

I have read many, many books on hypothyroidism including most of the ones rated as five stars by Amazon.com. This book was the most comprehensive and informative of all of the books I've read. If you're going to read one book, read this one. Not only does it discuss the thyroid and its complications and affect on all body systems, but it goes into detail about blood test levels, tests you should have, mind/body healing, a diet to follow, the level of vitamins and minerals we need on a daily basis, etc. I am the kind of person who needs and likes to have all of the information I can access to help myself. Although I have finally found a doctor that knows as much as me, - for years, I did not. Now my doctor and I share information.

If you have a thyroid problem, this book is well worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars HIGH QUALITY INFORMATION.......2007-01-04

This book has very good discussion on the treatment of (usually) hypothyroid conditions. It tells you how to deal with marginal or non-indicating blood tests, usage habits, etc. I value this book.

5 out of 5 stars Simple but effective - keep an open mind.......2007-03-12

Given to the right person at the right time, this book can provide the foundation to self development: a strong mindset and a positive attitude. Peale's approach is simple but effective, even for the nonreligious - keep an open mind and just try it. Any genuine effort will be pleasantly rewarded.

4 out of 5 stars Peale's classic still has a message to deliver.......2006-12-11

If you are looking for a guide to faith-based self-improvement, this book is, well, the bible. In one of the earliest contemporary self-help books, famed clergyman Norman Vincent Peale explains how you can overcome any obstacle, internal or external, through the dynamic combination of the "science of faith" with psychological counseling and modern medicine. He teaches you how to banish the negative thoughts that cause fear and failure, and replace them with "the power of positive thinking." In this warm, faith-based book, first published 1952, he teaches readers his approach to solving problems and accepting yourself. He advocates using the New Testament and prayer to attain peace, happiness, love and success. The catch is, you must be one of the faithful to take full advantage of Peale's Christian teachings. His classic bestseller is more than a warm, if slightly quaint, self-help book. It's a cultural icon, filled with old-time religion and practical examples. We recommend it as a touchstone in this genre. If you want to walk this path, Peale got here first. In fact, many of today's self-development bestsellers have their roots in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and uplifting.......2004-08-21

Reading this book has encouraged me to continue seeking inspiration from the Bible. In fact, it has helped me to focus less on the size of my obstacles, and rely more on God. Peale writes with a relentless sense of faith and optimism. Some of his quoted conversations don't sound like the kind of conversations that people (especially men) ordinarily have with each other in the casual atmospheres that he describes, but they drive the point home in a way that it sticks. Every day I read a few pages, and every day I walked away more relaxed, believing that God would see me through whatever challenges he put before me. I have learned not to be so self-critical, and hence feel freed up to socialize and work without the weight of self-doubt and fear of failure. I have not committed Peale's "prescriptions" to memory (there are a few too many to exercise daily), but have instead made it a point to turn to scripture and prayer daily to unload the baggage of doubt, and renew my faith in God's promises. Peale's other books are definitely on my "to-read" list.

2 out of 5 stars don't waste your money..........2004-06-22

If you are looking for a religious sermon and want to pay $10 for it, then buy this book. If you want a more informative book that tells you a little more on how to better control your thinking and make yourself into a more positive person other than "just go to church and pray a lot", this isn't it. Now, don't get me wrong, I AM a religious person and DO go to church, but I wasn't looking for an oversimplified christian message. The description is a little misleading. In fact the title is misleading. It should be "TWO Traits for Maximum Results" ...trait 1 is 'go to church' and trait 2 is 'pray'. And all the real information he covers on these two topics could be covered in a paragraph or two. But then he wouldn't be selling as many copies now, would he?

Back in 1968, designers Charles and Ray Eames made a 10-minute documentary film, titled Powers of Ten, showing what the universe looks like at different scales. Philip and Phylis Morrison were scientific advisors on the movie, which Philip narrated, and it was chosen in 1998 for preservation in the National Film Registry, which selects "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant motion pictures" for preservation. The Morrisons' book translates the film onto paper.

Starting with a view of a billion light-years, the book (like the film) moves inward, with each page being at one-tenth the scale of the previous one. In 25 steps, you're looking at a picnic by the shores of Lake Michigan, then plunging into a human hand, down through the cells inside it, the DNA inside the cells, the atoms inside the DNA, and the subatomic particles inside the atom. By the time you've gone a total of 40 steps, you're in a world of quantum uncertainty.

There is no better guide to the relative sizes of things in the universe, and no better teacher about what exponential, scientific notation really means. --Mary Ellen Curtin

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding lesson in basic science.......2007-04-19

The premise of this book leads to one of the most fascinating demonstrations of what relative sizes really are. The first illustration is on the order of 10^25 meters, which is approximately 1 billion light years. At this level, even giant galaxies are little more than a dot of light. Subsequent illustrations move in by powers of ten, so by 10^23, our galaxy is now a large period with some evidence of a swirling structure. This zooming in continues until at the level of 10^1 meters, we see a man and a woman on a blanket in a grassy park on the edge of a marina in Chicago, Illinois. Their location was the central position of all previous illustrations.
The zooming in continues, the focus now in on the back of the man's right hand. At the level of 10^(-5) meters, we see an entire white blood cell. When the level of 10^(-8) meters is reached we see the structure of DNA and at the level of 10^(-14) meters, we see the nucleus of a carbon-12 atom. Finally, at the level of 10^(-16) we see nothing more than a random collection of colored splotches.
This is one of the best basic science books ever published; it should be read by all students before they get out of high school. Our brains have an inherent difficulty in grasping the enormous differences in size that exist in the universe. The illustrations are also an excellent lesson in the basic mathematics of exponents. From 25 to -16 is only 41 orders of magnitude and yet we have gone from what is close to the size of the universe down to the smallest objects that are currently known to exist.

5 out of 5 stars Another Scientific American Masterpiece.......2003-07-08

I purchased this book years ago when I began collecting the magnificent Scientific American Collection. It has since been published in paperback and I have heard there is a corresponding book that decreases by powers of ten. This is easily the most approachable of all the books in the series and I have used it with both my boys when they were younger.

Parenthetically, anything that would stimulate American interest in science - and stem the tide toward a universal scientific illiteracy - should be welcome. I have seen this powers of ten device several times but the one that stands out in my mind is the opening scene of CONTACT that was marred only by the pitiful displays of stupidity heard from the members of the audience. ("Is that Saturn?" "Yeah, it was once a star and that's how it got its rings." "That's what I thought.")

Back to the book, we start off matter of factly then proceed outward. The commentary is sparse because little is needed. In this case, the picture IS worth a thousand words - more if you get down to it. Get this now-affordable volume and give it to a youngster.

4 out of 5 stars Scale and exponential notation........2003-04-27

This book is an introductory peek at one of the most foundational mathematical tools needed for any consideration of cosmology, astronomy, and/or particle physics:
"At one end, far out where the galaxies appear like glowing froth in darkness, all our sciences become only one: cosmology. ... At the other end, for the very small we again have one science only: particle physics. There are even hints that the two ends inform each other." Evidence, perhaps, that television isn't all bad, the concept here was developed for a TV special program (quite a few years ago now), then plucked from video to print. It's a 'can't miss' premise but I find the writing to be slightly awkward and there may be too many illustrations. For a book that begs me to pick it up, it too easily invites me to put it down. Even so, it makes for a reasonably good overview of a universe more than 20 billion light years wide made out of stuff so small that we must describe it using negative powers of ten. The idea here is to illustrate the dramatic changes of scale involved in only a few powers of ten, and thus the "power" of powers of ten. The book's theme is itself quite modest, but for the reader unfamiliar with the concept of exponential notation, this small volume may be a startling revelation. To those familiar with the concept, the book may be a mere novelty, perhaps a "coffee table book."

5 out of 5 stars A picture is worth a 10³ words! Amazing!.......2001-10-05

I've seen this book for the first time in 1985, when I was kid. It is still my all-time favorite.

Although the book does have lots of textual info pages, the core of the book is a series of 42 full-page pictures which depict the an ordinary picnic photo in different scales.

Starting from an ordinary dude resting on the grass, each page turn shows the scene from 10 times farther away. First we see the park he is picnicing on, then the entire city, and before you know it we are in deep space racing towards the outskirts of the Universe.

On the other side of the journey, each page turn magnifies the last picture tenfold. First by viewing a close-up view of the picnicing guy's hand, you quickly find yourself probing deeper and deeper through the realms of biology and chemistry right into the core of a single atom.

The really cool thing about the whole deal, is that all the images are centered at the same object: a single atom on the picnicing dude's hand.

In short, the idea is absolutely brilliant. The images chosen for the presentation is not perfect, but they are still amazing. Of-course, the film is much more impressive then the book, but you can't take a film with you to a camping trip...

5 out of 5 stars No doubt deserves 5 stars; SURPRIZE it can be a child's book.......2001-07-27

This is a great book. Believe it or not, I walk my 5 year old son through the pictures. I am sure it is not meant for youngsters but it can be used like I am am doing.

The idea behind the book is on its smallest scale it is inside a qark inside an atomic nucleus, inside an atom, attached to a DNA molecule, inside a nucleus of a white blood cell, slightly below the skin on a hand of a man asleep at a picnic on some grass in Chicago....all the way to the scale of the universe. My son and I will transverse the middle 1/3 or 1/2 of the journey. He gets to pick his own bedtime books and he chooses this one out of hundreds once or twice a week.

The pictures make a great way to explain the concept of scale and various aspects of science. On the facing page of the main picture underconsideration are objects of the same scale. You can really see that the tail of a dinosaur is 10 times longer than a man.

For the adult, it is an easy introduction to various aspects of science all at different scales. It is not a super serious book - no math - simple explanations. But as a practicing scientist, I view it as vary factual.

The Sermon on the Mount is one of a very few spiritual books that has the power to actually change a life. At least it did mine. Around the Year has 365 short readings culled from Fox's other works, which I believe were mostly collections of his newspaper columns. These are nice positive readings that provide a good start to the day, and only slightly abridged from the original columns. The other books are also collections of those newspaper columns, and again pleasant, positive readings, but not half as instructional as Sermon on the Mount.

This is a daily devotional by Corrie Ten Boom that has been sitting in my library all my life. My copy is tattered. Everytime I need to reach for moral courage, integrity, kindness, endurance and empathy, I turn to this 'little' book.
This particular order was for 10 men that I know through a prison ministry who are living in very difficult situations for long periods of their lives. If you need to learn forgiveness, try reading"The Hiding Place." Only the spirit could work through a person to forgive the people she encountered during her stay in a Nazi concentration camp......and forgive...she did!!!!!

    Book Description

From the courage and beauty of Esther to the reforming spirit of Catherine the Great, here are essays about ten queens by an author who has been called arguably the best writer of social history for children and adolescents ever. Meltzer, by his own description, is accustomed to presenting history from the bottom up, but he takes a top down approach for these monarchs, revealing the personal and political natures of women who commanded power not because they happened to marry a king but because they ruled in their own right, by themselves. Or if they sat on thrones beside kings, they had as much or more to say about governing than their husbands. Most were, by today's standards, astonishingly young. Many were physically powerful, accomplished women. Some were schooled to rule, others not. But all were ambitious, passionate, and determined to hold power. All were subject to suspicion and envy. And all, in their successes and failures, ideals and compromises, assumptions and privileges, present interesting contrasts with the lives of women today.

5 out of 5 stars Well laid out book.......2007-04-30

I enjoy reading stories of women from pre-history to modern times so this one intrigued me, even though it was written for younger readers. This was a well laid-out book overviewing queens. Sequentially, it went from oldest to newest and spanned queens from 5th century A.D. to the 1700's. Each were from a different place and culture. This book was well researched and was easy to read. The illustrations were done well, giving it an air of mystery, romance and dignity. It's one that I'll keep on my shelves to reference when I want a quick, easy to read overview.

    3 out of 5 stars Vaguely Entertaining...........2004-03-29

(...)"Ten Queens" gives the life story of ten monarchs from diverse time periods and cultures, along with the effects they had on their realms.
The problem with "Queens" is that it reads like a textbook, dryly listing fact after fact. It would be perfect for a research report or biography, as it includes firsthand accounts and scholar's analyses. However, the entertainment quotient is somewhat lacking - as I mentioned before, I could read a textbook and be equally intrigued. However, Mr. Meltzer does manage to portray the personalities of these extraordinary women, and certain passages convey how spectacular their lives must have been.
The illustrations nearly make up for how tedious the text of this tome is. The colorful, barely abstract paintings add an air of fun to the otherwise stringent chapters.

Overall, I suggest "Ten Queens" for those wishing to pen a report/biography on Queen Esther, Cleopatra, Boudicca, Zenobia, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Isabel of Spain, Elizabeth I, Christina of Sweden, Maria Theresa or Catherine the Great, but if you are seeking entertainment, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Great for little girls.......2002-03-28

I found this book at the library by chance. I was looking for a more books about Queen Elizabeth I. This book is a great introduction to women in history. It is easy enough for my then 8 year old to read for the Texas Reader's club. I am definitely checking it out for my 7 yr to use for her TX Reader's club requirements.

5 out of 5 stars Very, Very Good!!!.......2001-12-13

I checked "Ten Queens" out from my local library to brush up on my reading of some of my favorite historical figures of all time- Cleopatra VII and Eleanor of Acquitaine.
While the book shed great light on two of the most famous women in all of ancient/medieval history, the author also brought to light lesser known queens. All of a sudden, I have a great respect for the fearless Zenobia, the corageous Boudicca, and, of course, the Biblical Esther. He has done an oustanding job of researching all of the queens and presenting them all in a favorable light (though let's not forget Christina's hypocritical ways, Cleopatra's love affairs, and Catherine the Great's promiscuity- for history's sake).
All in all, a great book worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Broad based overview of Queens makes excellent reading........1998-10-24

My nine year old daughter thoroughly enjoyed this overview of famous women rulers from ancient times to the 18th century.

1 out of 5 stars Too many predictable, self-serving anecdotes.......2005-02-08

This book is filled with story after story of how the author is able to achieve her daily goals by being in the right state of mind.
These anecdotes take up most of the book and I found them very predictable and not very inspiring.
Other than the stories, there are some Seth/Jane Roberts inspired insights that are worth reading or studying.
On the whole, there is way too much fluff that detracts from the content of this book.

5 out of 5 stars This book creates a new excitement about living-day by day........1999-02-17

Dahl reminds us to be constantly vigilant with our thoughts and beliefs in order to create the reality we desire for ourselves. She does not claim to have discovered something new, but rather reminds those who are familiar with the Seth material, and those who may not have yet independently discovered it, that each of us is personally responsible for the circumstances of our lives. I have consciously used some of the more simple illustrations of creating what I choose to experience, and it works. We do create our own reality - NOW.

5 out of 5 stars How to change your life........1999-01-14

As a science oriented person I can understand the controversy over some of the issues contained throughout this material. However, not only have I developed a renewed understanding of my "self", I am able to integrate my understanding of "this" reality with that of which we have all forgotten. This book has given me the key to our forgotten system, and it is up to us as individuals whether or not we are willing to remember. Why not? This book is fantastic! In my opinion, this material does not represent any new, alternative perceptions of reality; it is our traditional ways of thinking that are alternative! Enjoy:)

5 out of 5 stars A genuine classic of popular scientific writing. Buy it!.......2007-07-15

`Powers of Ten' by Philip and Phylis Morrison and `The Office of Charles and Ray Eames' is one of those non-fiction classics which everyone gets around to buying or at least browsing in the library before they reach the age of forty. In fact, I'm quite surprised to see that the book was copyrighted in 1982, since it seems as if it has been around for decades, easily going back as far as the 1950's.

Part of this impression may be due to the fact that the concept is so simple. The heart of the book is a series of forty-two (42) photographs, or simulated photographs, each showing a view exactly 1/10th the size of the previous view. One thing that confirms the vintage of the book is that the views near the middle of the series, those from near outer space, are genuine photographs from some NASA platform or other.

One similar book that comes to mind is `Flatland', the `fictional' description of a three-dimensional person visiting a two-dimensional world. A similar work, far more whimsical than these two, is `The Point and the Line'. One advantage the geometrically premised works have on `Powers of Ten' is that their underlying mathematical bases are virtually secure for the ages. Not so with our `Powers of Ten'. Even my layman's knowledge of modern physics can spot at least two out of date aspects in the book. The first I spotted was the statement that the largest share of mass in the universe is in stars. Modern theory posits a mysterious moiety called `dark matter', which now explains a lot of facts about astrophysics which were a mystery under the `all mass in stars' point of view. The second out of date perspective is the absence of any fine detail at the sub-atomic particle level. In the early 1980's, the most advanced physics relied entirely on a particle-based paradigm for sub-atomic structures (The last quantum physics advance cited is the hypothesis of quarks). Since the mid-1980s, the theory of choice is based on strings or even `superstrings'. The conjectural pictures at this level know nothing of vibrating strings. The `big' perspectives also don't really do justice to hypotheses about deep space entities such as black holes and quasars.

Still, this is a great classic. If, for no other reason than it is a great tutorial on getting someone acquainted with the metric system of measuring distances, as all steps are in tenths or tens of a meter. On a more general level, this is a great little lesson in the history of physical science, as the book contains a chronology of the discoveries that pushed our perceptions of the world in one direction (big) or the other (small).

Any family with at least one scientifically curious child should own a copy of this little gem!

    5 out of 5 stars Powers of Ten -- a Flipbook.......2002-01-08

Charles and Ray Eames give us a photographic tour of the universe we can hold in our hands. Starting with a picture of the dark emptiness of at the edge of the universe, each page brings us closer to our galaxy, solar system, planet, and down to the one power of ten on which we humans live. But then we continue to dive deeper -- skin deep -- shrinking smaller and smaller through the cells, molecules, and finally sub-atomic space of which we are composed... finding the empty space within the atom to be eerily reminiscent of outer space itself. It's an exciting, thought-provoking five-minute journey you'll want to take again and again.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Ride Through The Powers Of Ten........2001-01-23

With a start at 10e+25 meters, from the far end of the universe (~1 billion light years), the book takes 1 power of ten steps downward to the subatomic level, about 10e-16 meters - or smaller than a hydrogen atom. A very good book to get lost in the comparison from one power to the next - be it higher (bigger) or lower (smaller).

From a proton to the deeper reaches of space (at 10 million light years), this little gem has been an inspiration to me since I purchased it a few years ago. It is based on the film of the same name. It simply presents photos of each level with what you are looking at---one picture per page. Hence, the "flipbook" feature.

Going by the mathematical powers of ten (ie 10 to the +23 meters (outer space past our galaxy) to the proton at 10 to the -15 power, the structure of our universe and ourselves is endlessly fascinating to me. It actually solidifies my validation of the truth "as above, so below".

If one ever doubts that there is a Higher Power, just check this amazing visual feast of a book out!

    A mind-expanding experience!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Concept & Motivation Book for Teachers & Students.......1999-07-28

This picture book is an excellent pictorial view of the miniscule to the enormous. Very Interesting! Mathematics and science teachers at all levels should have this book in their classrooms. I can't wait to show my Algebra and Mathematics Laboratory students. On the other hand, this book would be interesting for anyone having interest in Science, Astronomy, Mathematics, and Measurement.
