Book Description

Do you know your Number?

What happens if you don't make it to your Number?

Do you have a plan?

The often-avoided, anxiety-riddled discussion about financial planning for a secure and fulfilling future has been given a new starting point in The Number by Lee Eisenberg. The buzz of professionals and financial industry insiders everywhere, the Number represents the amount of money and resources people will need to enjoy the active life they desire, especially post-career. Backed by imaginative reporting and insights, Eisenberg urges people to assume control and responsibility for their standard of living, and take greater aim on their long-term aspirations.

In 1999, Eisenberg was in the midst of downshifting from having served as the Editor-in-Chief of Esquire and other high profile positions. He was "half-in, half-out of the workplace" with an enviable consulting position at Time, Inc., and a family comfortably settled in the suburbs. That's when he received an unexpected offer from the Wisconsin-based Lands' End which, in the end, he couldn't resist. It meant uprooting his family and moving to the rural heartland, and taking on the challenges of an entirely new way of life. Before the move, he admits, "I was worried about the Number." Once in Wisconsin, Eisenberg confesses that the "Number was leading us around by our noses."

From Wall Street to Main Street USA, The Number means different things to different people. It is constantly fluctuating in people's minds and bank accounts. To some, the Number symbolizes freedom, validation of career success, the ticket to luxurious indulgences and spiritual exploration; to others, it represents the bewildering and nonsensical nightmare of an impoverished existence creeping up on them in their old age, a seemingly hopeless inevitability that they would rather simply ignore than confront. People are highly private and closed-mouthed when it comes to discussing their Numbers, or lack thereof, for fear they might either reveal too much or display ineptitude.

In The Number, Eisenberg describes this secret anxiety as the "Last Taboo," a conundrum snared in confusing financial lingo. He sorts through the fancy jargon and translates the Number into commonsense advice that resonates just as easily with the aging gods and goddesses of corporate boardrooms as it does with ordinary people who are beginning to realize that retirement is now just a couple of decades away. Believing that the Number is as much about self-worth as it is net worth, Eisenberg strives to help readers better understand and more efficiently manage all aspects of their life, money, and pursuit of happiness.

* According to Eisenberg, "Number chasers" fall into four personality types:

--"Procrastinators" enter their forties and fifties ensconced in a cloud of avoidance and denial about the years ahead of them, or simply do not understand investing in their futures.

--"Pluckers" often lazily or arrogantly pull ephemeral, albeit specific, Numbers from thin air with little attention to developing a realistic and coherent plan to achieve their goals.

--"Plotters" crunch every practical aspect of their financial history, hoping to cement their Number in black and white, even at the expense of not having fun and leisure.

--"Probers" visualize their Numbers not as an end but as the means to pursuing dreams and passions, and completing inner and outer journeys to self-fulfillment.

* The current "Debt Warp" is the "silent Number killer that afflicts young and old" that has been brought on by our "whip-it-out credit-card culture."

* The "Lost Years" describes a person's 20s, 30s, and 40s wherein sensible financial foundation-building bows to oblivious and careless spending, and the tug-of-war dichotomy between the "old Rest of Your Life" and the "new Rest of Your Life."

* A surprise "Lifestyle Relapse" attack around retirement age can be induced by debt, aging, long term care, and self-absorption. Living longer and spending more, people will eventually experience dire consequences in response to the debt-drenched, expense account-driven lifestyles to which they have grown accustomed.

* The six tenets of the "Eisenberg Uncertainty Principles" outline the dubious state of living in a carpe diem-addicted, indebted culture with little financial guidance or responsibility.

* "Downshifting" is an important skill one needs to know how to do in the expanse between leaving a career and before death in order to maintain financial stability and a happy life.

Eisenberg's book is not an investment guide, but rather something wholly original: a revealing look behind our most common financial and emotional conflicts and how we can begin to get a grip on them. Eisenberg gives each reader a unique and unprecedented tool with which to virtually craft his or her future. This encompassing book is a priceless, step-by-step prelude to initiating, or continuing, discussions with a qualified financial advisor. The bottom line for The Number is that Eisenberg offers each reader a fresh and promising beginning to the rest of his or her life.

4 out of 5 stars The Number.......2007-10-08

I have read many books about planning for retirement and investing. I enjoyed this book immensely. I see that many reviewers were somewhat disappointed with the book. Since I am from the era of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance this book was right up my alley. We all are out there (or should be out there) chasing the number, but as with Zen there is a much bigger picture you must look at then just the number. My wife and I have had several conversations because of this book. As Mr. Eisenberg says in his book you can get a number with only a few taps of a calculator, but what you want to do with the rest of you life is a much deeper consideration. We feel that we are in a much better place to move forward with the rest of our life. Bravo Mr. Eisenberg!

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money.......2007-08-26

Why can't we give "0 stars"? No insightful content. Self-important name-dropping. I felt cheated out of my $20+ for a book saying, "Retirement is about more than money."

3 out of 5 stars More like 3.5 stars..........2007-08-09

A reader's perspective on this book will probably vary a lot based on their individual experience and knowledge. For some it may be eye-opening, for others it may be more like "tell me something I don't know".

It is a fast read, and full of interesting factoids. The history of how people have looked (or not looked) at their retirement plans (actual drawdown and spend, as opposed to micromanaging their 401ks) was interesting.

Pros:
- easy to read, light humored.
- Interesting stats, and good references to experts in the field
- Nice thumbnail sketches of types of individuals and their exposures to risk
- has some interesting frameworks. For example, think about your retirements spending as being equal to 4% of your intended nest egg. If you need more than 4% in retirement, you may need to save more to get your Number up.

Cons:
- may be too basic for someone who has done analysis for their actual long term planning. It should also come as no surprise that the current generation has their own accountability to save for retirement (not the government or your employeer).
- can be alarmist for people...i.e. Guess what, you could be in trouble. And even worse, you can't necessarily trust people who say they are 'experts'.
- middle section of the book drags a bit compared to intro, I thought.

In summary, if you have thought about retirement, but haven't yet really done some detailed planning, this book can be an enabler for how to think about plans. It won't solve your problems, but it will highlight the considerations you should be making.

I tend to believe that people get scared of the complexities in financial planning, when in fact, several basic principles can be applied to help an individual along a reasonably healthy path. The internet provides a lot of resources to do this, but there probably needs to be a better standard primer out there.

2 out of 5 stars Write a Book, Make Your Number.......2007-08-01

Ugh.

I did something I rarely do, I picked up a book on a whim at an airport. I fell for the cover title, and I was interested to read another person's perspective on reaching the ultimate personal annuity goal - a self-perpetuating nest egg.

My primary objection is that - though this is a book clearly marketed to the masses - Eisenberg's primary focus appears to be on a close circle of friends who are multi-millionares (and yet, still seem unsure whether they've accumulated enough money). Hence in terms of focus, the book is frequently off-base.

A second objection is the writing style. Perhaps this can be expected from a journalist/editor, but I often found myself rolling my eyes at fluffy filler which largely served to distract from the content-at-hand. "... [ten commandments] etched onto an I-can't-believe-it's-not-stone Corian tablet", and "... slightly better than a snowflake's chance in the Sonoran Desert", for example. It's a book - no need to fill the column, Lee.

My third primary objection is the wide employment of statistics without backing references. It can be excused that most of the material was repetitious for me, but figures without references should raise suspicion.

On the positive side, the book was an easy read, entertaining on occasion, and may spur a few people to think harder about their investment situation. But there are far better resources out there.

For practical investing, I very much recommend Burton Malkiel's "Random Walk Down Wall Street", and Benjamin Graham's "The Intelligent Investor".

In summary, with my purchase, Lee is one royalty check closer to making his Number.

5 out of 5 stars Philosophical guide to saving for retirement.......2007-05-30

Great read by somebody not in the financial industry. He is a journalist and editor, so the book is thoroughly researched. He is funny as heck, so, the book will keep you entertained as you read. While is he not a financial specialist, he really knows the business well. He helps you understand the business so that when you deal with the wall street guys and insurance guys, you will be a smarter and more informed client. It's a great wakeup call for anybody in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, who are approaching retirement and need sound guidance on what to do and how to figure out the right path. Most importantly, it's a good test for your own values, so you can figure out for yourself what is important to you and how to spend the rest of your life. So, it deals not only with money, retirement, and investing, but also with how you invest your time - or the amount of time you have left here on earth. Very well done, give it to somebody you care about or somebody who needs financial direction for retirement, saving, life insurance, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Don't date, get married or move without it. .......2007-09-17

Read this book from cover to cover and use it for life. Excellent in
every way to find your love, live in the right house and understand
when things can go wrong. I even subscribe to her newsletter and she
recently answered an e-mail of mine. Saved me from making a big
mistake moving, which I now know would have been foolish.

5 out of 5 stars Glynis is on the money!!!.......2007-08-07

Glynis McCants clearly explains numerology and how YOU personally can learn more aboutyourself, your loved ones, your co-workers and that someone you just don't understand. She also provides insight as to where you are in a particular cycle of your life. It's very simple and incredibly insightful. I've purchased both of her books and an online reading and would highly recommend this book to someone who's curious or serious. I've researched numerology books and writings by others, but have yet to come across someone as succint and interesting as Glynis. You won't regret your purchase.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Changed My Life!.......2007-05-15

I have always been a skeptic about things like Numerology and "self help books", but after a friend gave this to me as a gift, I was ASTOUNDED! Glynis makes the science of Numerology accessible to the masses and she is dead on accurate. When I read about my Life Path, 7, it was like she knew who I was to the point where it was almost creepy. After doing the numbers of all the people in my life, I now am able to get along with everyone because I am able to relate to them in a way that they understand where I'm coming from. Now I am able to understand myself and others in a way I never could before. Thank you, Numberslady, for making my life easier. I recommend this book to you if you need something positive to read that will uplift you and show you how to get along with everyone. She not only shows you who you are but she shows you how to be happy, which is something that I have struggled with my whole life. THANK YOU GLYNIS!

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Sturdy.......2007-07-14

I bought this book for my 20 month old granddaughter. She's a very active toddler but sits still for a book like this. She looks out the window every time she hears a truck so loves the page with all the vehicles. The one thing I wish they had included is the garbage truck, which is her favorite. The flaps are sturdy and easy to open because each one has a little space for the finger. I've gotten her other Fisher-Price flap books and I don't think any have ripped. I think her favorite is the farm.

5 out of 5 stars Great to teach professions.......2007-06-10

This book was great to teach my 2 year old about different professions.
"lift the flap" books keep her interested much longer than ones without.
    Great book, vibrant colors.

3 out of 5 stars Worth buying but not great.......2007-02-23

My 16 month-old daughter LOVES (like we read it 10 times a day) the Little People School Bus and Little People Farm books. This one is pretty good but not nearly as good as the others. On the page that shows trucks and construction vehicles, you can barely notice the difference after lifting the flap. Although this book might be better for older toddlers. These books are sturdy, but my daughter has ripped off a few flaps when unsupervised.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE this series.......2006-08-28

My 16 month old daughter, Sophie, was introduced to the Little People Lift-the-flap series with the Farm book when she was 9 months old. She loved that book so much that for easter I purchased school bus and the cars & trains one, just today I bought the newest ones (busy town and the zoo). She gets so exicted after saying "book" when I pick her up and put her in my lap and begin reading the pages (that i now have memorized). She also enjoys lifting the flaps herself. Through these books she has learned a lot of differnt animals including what sounds they make. I would give these books ten stars if I could and plan to begin giving them as gifts to other children.NO REGRETS

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for toddlers........2006-07-18

My 16 month son LOVES this book. He carries it throughout the house and will sit for long periods of time each day looking at the pictures. Overall the book is quite sturdy, has numerous flaps(at least 9 per scene) and bright illustrations that are captivating to the eye. All of the Fisher Price Lift the Flap books are very sturdy in comparison to other flap books on the market. They are worth the money.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Deceit and Lies!.......2007-05-22

This book was kinda like a mystery book at some parts. Roylin became friends with a new girl that went to Bluford High. He became to like the girl so much, that he sacrafiest stealing from his only friend just to satify a girl he's only known for about a week. He's has no one to turn to for help when he discoveres that his best friend may be dead because of a stupid mistake on his part. When people try to warn him about this new girl, he thinks they're jealous. Then, he finally comes to his senses when he finds out that the girl he thought he loved (and loved him back) was using him for the money she THOUGHT he had. The resolution of this book is you get hurt most by the people you think you can trust than the people you don't. So my advice is to be care of the people you call "Your Friends"!

5 out of 5 stars secrets of the shawdoes.......2007-04-26

This book is about a guy named Roylin. He has a friend named Cooper. Roylin is living in a nightmare and it is his own fault. Roylin is trying to impress a girl but every time he does it he makes a mastake in front of her feeling pretty silly. Mr Miller is their soclal teacher at their school. he dies by some murdres him.

My favorite part of the book is when they find Mr Miller in his own basement dead. Mr Miller is there soclal studies studie teacher. This shocked Cooper and Roylin to find him there.

I will reccamend this book because it has alot of action. The book has a lot of ups and to it . The book has alot of mystares . This is why I reccomend this book.this book is a good thinkin book.

5 out of 5 stars When you think your the best of friends.......2007-02-16

This book is about a boy named Roylined who is living a nightmare and it's all his fault . It started when the new student , named Korie and the most beautiful girl in his school was interested in him. Unlike most people at Bluford High, she seemed to like him. But when Roylin tried to impress her, he made a terrible mistake. Now one of his friends is gone , and someone is out to destroy him. Cought in a tightening web of lies and threats, Roylin is desperate for a way out.

    Secrets in the Shadows

When I first started reading the Bluford Series I could not stop .Once I finished one book I'd go onto another. I really love these books because it talks about conflicts and situations with teen, adults, families, and friends and how they overcome it or help someone overcome it. But this book in particular, I really liked. It discussed the living conditions of Roylin Bailey, how he felt and acted in school, a relationship, his anger, and wanting real, trusting friends. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book, this book was great!

    Book Description

On May 26, 1967, the spiraling career of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, then the top contender for the world middleweight boxing crown, came to a shuddering and tragic halt: he and a young fan were found guilty of murder of three white people in a New Jersey bar. The nightmare knew no bounds as Carter traded his superstar status for a prison number and the concrete walls of some of America's most horrific institutions. Originally published as an attempt by Carter to set the record straight and force a new trial, The Sixteenth Round is timeless. It is an eye-opening portrait of growing up black in America, a scathing indictment of the prison system Carter grew up in and out of, and a mesmerizing re-creation of his furious battles in the ring and in the courtroom set against the backdrop of the turbulent sixties. The liveliness of Carter's street language, its power and ironic humor, makes this an eloquent, soul-stirring account of a remarkable life not soon to be forgotten.

4 out of 5 stars Rubin Cartert, the true story - it's not enough to see the movie.......2005-12-20

If you have seen "The Hurricane" motion picture, starring Denzel Washington (an amazing peformance), surely you'd think that you know everything there is to know about Rubin Carter. Unfortunately, that's incorrect. Furthermore, it's not even close.
Don't get me wrong - the motion picture is fantastic and it surely includes all the important details, but regardless to what kind of movie it is - you should know, and I can tell you that for sure because I read this book, that there are A LOT of details that aren't mentioned in the movie.
If you want to know the whole story I must implore you to take a long look at that book. But I should also tell you that there's a downside: The book can make you read even five pages in a row without any important or interesting thing coming up; it can also make your patience burst if you're expecting something to happen but it takes long pages, sometimes not even discribed so interestingly.
Bottom line: if Rubin Carter and his amazing story interests you - I would suggest you read this book. It will make you see the big picture about this man.

    5 out of 5 stars A True Account.......2005-11-24

I bought this book my sophomore year of high school and that was over 7 years ago. It has literally been my bible to life. Rubin and his book have changed my life more than anything else I have ever encountered. Too often than not we find false heroes in this world. People like Paris Hilton who some look up to as a hero or a role model, but the true heroes in this life are often over looked or never seen at all. Rubin Carter is a true hero, I have never even heard of such a troubled life an to come out on top both a champion of his sport and one in life. A wise man told me once that it is now how we live this life but what we do during it. If your looking for a uplifting book of a true hero an a book that will give you strength when all doubt you, this is the one.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Touching.......2004-05-04

Obviously no one can write his story better than Rubin himself. This story is both and inspiring story of a man who has never stopped fighting and a terrifying reality check into the American judicial system. This book is filled with an anger that is only kept in check by the author's own love and compassion.

The reader whould of course keep in mind this is an autobiography and therefore is skewed to the writer's point of view and emotional state.

2 out of 5 stars The rounds go on and on..........2003-04-28

I purchased this book, after viewing the much celebrated movie, "The Hurricane." The book is mediocre. I found it difficult to believe much of the writer's exaggerated boasting regarding his many talents. I had erroneously gathered from the movie, that this was a self-effacing, self-made man, not so. The reader is ever searching for the "real meat" of the story, however, the bulk of the story is about the author as a "ghetto-bad boy." The last few chapters of the book are short and quickly race you through the actual murder and trial. Overall it is not well written and disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars A touching story inspires child........2002-12-13

This story reached out and touched the lives of many people. It also made people realize not to be racist. I know that I used to be racist and this turned my life around. The fact that rubin was in jail for a crime he didnt commit just because he wasnt white isnt at all fair. His story inspired me not to be racist and to get others not to hate the non-white. It has touched many lives and i like that. I am one of Rubin's biggest fans.

    Book Description

Five tests are the cornerstones for monitoring your overall health with diabetes and developing a daily management plan — yet few of the more than 21 million people in the United States living with diabetes know their results of these five tests:
    • A1c
    • Blood pressure
    • Lipids (HDL, LDL, triglycerides)
    • Microalbumin
    • Yearly eye exam
Knowing your five key test results will enable you to manage your condition as successfully and fully as possible, and achieve the long and healthy life you want. Dr. Richard Jackson and Amy Tenderich walk you through how to understand each of these factors and then to create a personalized treatment plan for optimum blood-glucose control, heart health, and general diabetes management and well being.

5 out of 5 stars Must read this book.......2007-06-07

I wish I could put a copy of Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes: 5 Essential Health Factors You Can Master to Enjoy a Long and Healthy Life in every diabetes clinic. Better yet, in the hands of every person with type 2 diabetes.

Richard Jackson, MD and Amy Tenderich provide a realistic guide to diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes, with this book. The focus is on the results of the five tests that determine diabetes health (A1C, blood pressure, lipids, microalbumin, and eye exam) and the importance of physical activity rather than providing another lecture about weight loss and forbidden foods. Countering fears about insulin is another important aspect of this book. If someone needs insulin to keep good results coming on the five key tests, they should not fear it - they should embrace it as a way to curb future complications.

I might not be able to provide a copy to every person with type 2 diabetes...or even every diabetes clinic, but I can lend my copy to those interested in learning more about their own or their loved one's condition.

3 out of 5 stars 'Almost' All You Need To Know About Diabetes.......2007-03-22

Lose 30 pounds. Get your blood pressure down. Lower your LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and get that HDL cholesterol up. Keep an eye on your blood sugar and have it checked often.

Does any of this sound familiar? Sure it does and you may have even heard it from your own doctor regarding your flailing health because of you are overweight or obese. It's the dreaded lecture that comes from physicians when they see certain health indicators come back as irregular.

But what if what you are dealing with is something even more life-threatening than just a bout with obesity, hypertension, or a poor lipid profile? What if it's one of the most dreaded of all diseases that makes you feel like your world has come to an official end? That's exactly what happens to some people when they are told they have been diagnosed with diabetes.

What did I do to cause this? How can something like this happen to me? Will I ever live a "normal" life again or am I destined for a life of painful insulin injections, expensive prescription medications, and endless doctor visits for the rest of my life?

These thoughts are not only very real to people who are told they have diabetes, but it can paralyze them even when they otherwise have their life under complete control. Diabetes has quite literally turned the life of millions of people upside down and leaves them with very little hope or help. Where can people turn when they are faced with such despair about this complex disease they have?

Whether you are Type 1 or Type 2 diabetic, then you have undoubtedly been given some all-too-familiar generic advice about handling your diabetes (like I illustrated at the beginning of this review) which is all meant to help you I am sure. Unfortunately, though, this kind of one-size-fits-all approach to diabetes is not only shortsighted, but incredibly ineffective.

That's where the mostly informative new book from Harvard medical professor and Joslin Diabetes Center investigator Dr. Richard Jackson as well as saucy and always on point professional journalist, blogger, and diabetes sufferer Amy Tenderich comes into play. It's called Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes: 5 Essential Health Factors You Can Master To Enjoy A Long And Healthy Life (Marlowe Diabetes Library) and will quickly become your handy reference resource guide for almost everything you ever wanted to know about diabetes.

I say "almost" for a reason which I will explain in a moment.

First, the good parts of this book. It is very well put together in an enjoyable format mixing a healthy dose of diabetes facts alongside some hands-on practical advice about how to best implement the proper lifestyle changes that need to take place for optimal diabetes management. While this can be a rather drab and boring topic to discuss, Dr. Jackson and Tenderich do a yeoman's job of keeping it fun and engaging.

And I really like the fact that the authors strongly urge people living with diabetes to implement permanent lifestyle changes. At the same time, they push the positive message that diabetics don't necessarily need to attempt to make multiple changes all at once, but instead slowly begin to work them into their individual routine incrementally. I agree with this bit-by-bit strategy because it is the best way to make the changes take hold and become a permanent habit whether it is with weight loss, diabetes, or anything else. Breaking out of those old habits takes time.

Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes hits the ground running right away in the first six chapters explaining why you need to be concerned about your health when you have diabetes and points to the five tests that every single diabetic absolutely must have checked regularly if they are going to lick this disease by learning to manage it well.

What are these five tests? Very simply put, it's the following:

    1. Your A1C
    2. Your blood pressure
    3. Your lipid profile (cholesterol)
    4. Your microalbumin (What?! Don't worry, they explain!)
    5. Your eye exam

While Dr. Jackson and Tenderich do not explicitly recommend people who are not diabetic to have these tests conducted, I think it is an extremely good idea considering there are tens of millions more pre-diabetics walking around and have no idea they are either already or becoming insulin resistant. Taking preventative action now would likely slow down the expected diabetes boom coming over the next few decades.

You can certainly appreciate the "been there, done that" feel of this book which does a fabulous job of removing the mystery and awe out of diabetes for good. Whether you have just been diagnosed with diabetes or even if you are a decades-long veteran living with the disease, there is plenty of useful statistics and data to keep you occupied for hours as you learn all the ins and outs of diabetes.

But I have one pretty major concern about the book that makes me say it is "almost" a comprehensive look at the subject of diabetes. While there is plenty of discussion about carbohydrates and how controlling your intake of them whether they are in the form of sugar, pasta, rice, potatoes, or otherwise in Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes, the lack of a real sense of urgency about trying to keep them limited as a means for managing diabetes is not emphasized heavily enough and given the significance it deserves. All the latest research indicates that reducing carb intake can bring about permanent control of diabetes and you just don't hear this message stated explicitly in this book.

For a book like this about diabetes releasing in the year 2007, how can you totally ignore the many years of clinical studies (like this one) that have been conducted by valient researchers like Dr. Eric Westman from Duke University and Dr. Mary C. Vernon from the University of Kansas and the co-author of Atkins Diabetes Revolution? What about Dr. Steve Phinney or Dr. Jay Wortman? And let's not forget Dr. Mary Gannon and Dr. Frank Nuttall, too! I could easily continue on with many more names, but these are enough to get you started.

Not only have these amazing researchers shown the vital statistics for their diabetic patients become normalized, but many of them were able to come completely off of all their prescription medicines for good. GASP! How can this be? You'd never know this was possible if you only read this book because there was no mention of ending diabetes drug use in Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes--NONE! Just the strong "now take your medicines regularly along with a low-fat diet" message that diabetics have had to suffer through long enough.

Where was the promotion of this major "cure" for diabetes which was highlighted nationally by Adam Campbell in Men's Health magazine in November 2006 found within the pages of this diabetes book, hmmm? The glaring absence of this cutting edge information about diabetes is like talking to someone about how to drive a car that doesn't have a steering wheel. Sure, you may get somewhere, but not necessarily where you want to go.

Furthermore, there was nary a single mention of the most famous diabetes expert who has implored a low-carb solution to his Type 1 diabetes for decades--the amazing Dr. Richard Bernstein! This man has done more to add quality of life and even saved the lives of millions of diabetics through his bestselling books and personal practice. However, if you read Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes it's as if Dr. Bernstein and his common sense strategies for tackling diabetes don't even exist. Shame on them for this grave omission!

To be honest, it was quite scary reading over and over again in this supposedly all-encompassing book on the topic of diabetes that people with this disease need to consume as much as 60 percent carbohydrates daily, including regular servings of sugar if they want it "in moderation!" Say what?! ARGH!

Are they trying to make these people get sicker and sicker?! What kind of irresponsible advice like this is being given to diabetics?! Yikeseroo! How about just giving them a little arsenic "in moderation" while you're at it, too? Sheeez!

Yet, at the same time, the authors emphasize the critical nature of carbohydrate reduction in the management of diabetes. So which is it? I understand we are all different with a variety of factors that will work for the individual person, but come on! I'm a big believer in people finding what works for them in weight loss and health management at my blog, but I see no downside for diabetics who want to control their disease naturally through diet by livin` la vida low-carb.

What will happen if diabetics decide to take the low-carb pathway to reversing the effects of their disease is they will get better than they've ever been before, seeing their A1C drop into "normal" range and staying there, lower their blood pressure, significantly drop their triglycerides, raise their HDL cholesterol levels, and ward off many of the inevitable future health issues due to their diabetes. Not a bad deal if you ask me!

Of course, the lack of any information about the low-carb nutritional approach to combat diabetes in Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes may have more to do with the American Diabetes Association and their ill-advised recommendations than anything else. It is quite clear that Dr. Jackson and Tenderich relied heavily on their skewed advice for diabetics.

You see the unmistakable fingerprints of their needless warnings about lowering LDL cholesterol (with even MORE medications such as statins--EEEK!), avoiding saturated fat, lowering salt intake, and controlling fat, calories, and portion sizes in page after page of this book. It really was more than a little nauseating to read all of this information while "low-carb" was nowhere to be found. I can't tell you how incredibly disappointing this was to me because diabetics who read this book will be left in the dark about what very well could be the solution to their disease.

While I certainly can appreciate what Dr. Richard Jackson and Amy Tenderich have done with their book Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes to help educate people with this disease get the basic information they may be looking for, it is the blatant omission of critical information about low-carb as a viable treatment option for diabetes that has me gravely concerned.

And if you are diabetic, you deserve to be armed with all the facts so you really can "outlive your diabetes."

5 out of 5 stars Best book on diabetes treatment and care........2007-03-13

In the 9 months since I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I've read numerous books, countless articles in magazines, tens of websites and blogs and gotten a great deal of information from doctors, dietitians, and various diabetes educators, but this is far and away the most positive, hopeful and most importantly best read of any of the books.

When one is diagnosed with a chronic disease, it's a life-changing moment: you wonder how you will deal with the diagnosis physically and emotionally, both now and in the future, and how your loved ones will react. Jackson and Tenderich give a hopeful assessment, and don't scare the reader like some other books for diabetes (the fire-and-brimstone version of medicine). But it's not all positive--the authors talk about many of the downsides of diabetic health-risks, but always offer effective ways to avoid these outcomes.

The 5 essential health factors from the title are: A1C (test assessing blood sugar for a 3-4 month period), Blood Pressure, Lipids, Microalbumin, and Eye Exam. The authors assert that if these 5 areas are under control, the awful complications those of us with diabetes dread (kidney failure, blindness, stroke, heart attack) can be averted.

The first four chapters are "action chapters"--the authors say that these four chapters contain the crux of the book, but the other chapters go into depth about various aspects of diabetes, such as "Understanding Hypo- and Hyperglycemia," "Traveling with Diabetes," and "Glucose Monitoring." I read the first four chapters the first day, gave myself a day to think about what I had read and went on to read the following chapters. This is a book that I didn't want to finish--I enjoyed reading it so much and had such a feeling of empowerment and hopefulness that I postponed finishing it for a week.

Dr. Richard Jackson is one of the leading physicians in the area of type 2 diabetes research and treatment (with the Joslin Diabetes Center and Harvard Medical School), and his insights into diabetes and the most up-to-date treatments are invaluable. Amy Tenderich is the woman behind Diabetes Mine, a wonderful website with all sorts of great information for people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes (Amy was herself diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in her mid-30s a few years ago).

The bottom line from this book is exercise. Get up and get moving, because that is the most positive thing one can do to overcome the negative, long-term effects of diabetes.

1 out of 5 stars More Backing for the ADA's Irresponsible Advice.......2007-02-23

I found this book depressing and infuriating. It promotes the irresponsible advice of the ADA, which not only keeps diabetics from developing complications, it leads them down that path. Then it tells them diabetes is progressive after all, and they should just keep upping their meds to deal with all the carbs they are advised to eat.

This book has some good points. It does tell diabetics what numbers they need to keep in line. But its idea of what the glucose numbers should be are very damaging.

The book calls an A1c of 7.2 "respectable" and 7.6 "not too shabby." It claims there is no benefit to an A1c of 6.0 over a 7.0, which is outright false. Even the ADA says a NON-diabetic level (4.0-6.0) is ideal, though it's pretty hard to get that low by following their low fat/high carb advice.

Don't waste your money on this book! It just patronizes diabetics and tells them they aren't to blame when their meds are maxed out and they're still getting complications while doing what the ADA (and its followers) told them to do.

Follow an eating plan that truly controls the carbs (which are sugar to your body) you are eating and you can prevent or at least slow down the complications without all the meds. The ADA knows it works, but won't recommend it because "it's too hard" to stick with. Don't let the ADA (and its followers) make your decisions for you. Inform yourself! This book won't do that.

4 out of 5 stars Learn just how much you don't know.......2007-02-05

If every Type 2 PWD read this book it might save millions of lives. After 35 years of having diabetes I learned something I never knew - the 5 tests that are predictors for getting complications: 1) A1c 2) blood pressure 3) lipids (HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides 4) microalbumin and 5) eye exam. In fact, I was so motivated learning about these tests, that I immediately called my new endo to see what my results to recent blood work were.

Written by Doctor Jackson, Director at the Joslin Diabetes Center, researcher and Assistant Professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and Amy Tenderich, my favorite diabetes blogger (DiabetesMine), this book is a goldmine of critical information, very conversationally written. And, with an understanding of what it's like to live with diabetes day after day after day.

In addition to highlighting the 5 tests, it includes ways to get your numbers in target range through exercise, eating, drugs, devices and lifestyle strategies and a handy Action Plan. And here's an extra goody - the best thing you may learn is you can stop trying to lose those last twenty pounds if you get your blood pressure under control. C'mon, what could be better, or more useful, than that?!

Cancer is a terrorist, driving us mad with feelings of hopelessness and despair. One man, faced with lymphatic cancer and a poor prognosis, had the unique opportunity to influence not just the course of his treatment, but the research guiding that treatment. Patient Number One tells the story of Rick Murdock, former CEO of CellPro, a Seattle biotech company specializing in cell separation--as it would happen, a vital component of his treatment and eventual cure. Written by Murdock and David Fisher, the book is both an intensely personal look at the day-to-day hardships of living with cancer and a thrilling legal story. While he was battling his disease, Murdock had to fight the giant Baxter medical-products corporation over an application of patent law that would have killed CellPro just as surely as cancer has killed so many people over the years. As the struggle for his company becomes intertwined with his fight for life, every moment takes on heightened significance; the simplest acts, like driving to the doctor with his wife and reading research reports at work, become crucial, even life-giving. Filled with unique insights into living with cancer and the dawn of the biotech era, Patient Number One is a powerful record of its time. --Rob Lightner

    Book Description

How many victims of cancer have thought, "If only I could order up a cure"?

    Rick Murdock could.

In an extraordinary book that proves that truth can be stranger than fiction, Rick Murdock tells the dramatic story of his fight against a deadly lymphoma that could only be treated with technology developed by his own biotech company, and the equally harrowing battle for the survival of his company in a bruising legal dispute with a multibillion-dollar medical products giant.

Rick Murdock was forty-four years old when he was named CEO of CellPro, a thriving biotech company in Seattle that was reaping the benefits of the biotech boom in the late 1980s and early '90s. Wall Street money fueled the flame of cutting-edge research at start-up companies like CellPro, where dedicated scientists were researching treatments that showed great promise in the fight against cancer and other diseases. But then Rick found a lump in his neck, evidence of the acute mantle cell lymphoma raging through his system. This rare form of cancer had no cure: Without a miracle, Rick would die.

At CellPro, Rick found his miracle workers. In a stunning twist of fate, Rick's staff was experimenting with a radical new treatment for advanced lymphomas, though the scientists were months, if not years, away from success. Knowing they were their boss's last hope, these researchers went to work on the experiment that could save Rick's life. If they were successful, Rick would become "patient number one," the guinea pig for a technology that had never been used on humans.

The thrilling race against time to save Rick's life is only part of this remarkable story. For while Rick was fighting for his own life, he was also battling a medical products behemoth named Baxter Healthcare and archaic patent laws that threatened CellPro. If CellPro was put out of business, the promising therapies it had been developing for victims of breast cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, and other deadly cancers could disappear. Patient Number One shares the intriguing story of how entrepreneurs and scientists came together to form CellPro, painting a vivid picture of how researchers work tirelessly to come up with new and better treatments for disease, while their financiers play a high-stakes financial game to make money from these medical endeavors. However, in the tradition of books like A Civil Action, Patient Number One is also an illuminating, often scathing look at how medical research is conducted in America today as the bottom line can get in the way of saving lives. Lawyers, politicians, researchers, executives, and investors all want a piece of the biotech pie and will stop at nothing to preserve their special interests, even if it means keeping life-saving treatments from the people who need them.

From tense courtroom scenes between the Goliath-like Baxter and tiny CellPro to anxious moments in the laboratory with Rick's staff and Rick's own agonizing cancer treatments, Patient Number One takes readers into the fascinating, frustrating world of medical research and how it directly affects us all.

2 out of 5 stars Medicine for the Elite.......2004-04-19

Although the ghost writer of this tale did yeoman's work, I was overwhelmed on every page by what was between the lines: Rick Murdock would have died from this disease had he not been a rich and powerful CEO of a company that specialized in this treatment area. The average person, that is to say all patients who do not fall into the top 10 percent of wage earners in this country, are subjected to health care that has become increasingly rationed. Mr. Murdock ought to thank his lucky stars and donate the proceeds from his (the ghost writer's) book to hospice.

5 out of 5 stars dramatic, compelling read..........2003-12-23

Overall, PATIENT NUMBER ONE is a compelling, dramatic true story that is fast-paced and socially relevant. Though story's most intense moments are played out over laboratory beakers and in the pages of patent infringement law-it's a fascinating read. The subject matter is on par with films like THE INSIDER, bringing to light some very ugly but very timely truths about big business and our legal system.

The premise-- that a CEO whose life was saved by the very technology his company invented, must battle big business to save that same company- is a true David vs. Goliath story, but one with a bittersweet ending.

The people in the story are very compelling, mostly because of the hardships they face and overcome, rather than because of their uniqueness or likability. For example, the protagonist Richard is a rather bland corporate executive, and one who was lucky enough to be in exactly the right place when cancer struck. I empathize with him only because of the complete unfair tactics that are waged against him, not because I necessarily identify with a CEO of a tech firm. The most interesting characters are the scientists at CellPro in charge of saving their boss' life. This task and its pressures are the most riveting aspects of the book, and make for a brilliant read.

5 out of 5 stars Ray of Hope.......2000-10-17

I have a Friend who just went through this process at John Hopkins. The results at this time are excellent and the procedures are almost exactly what the Author went through. I would recommend this book as a tool for all Patients that are diagnosed with this form of Cancer as a Ray of Hope for their peace of mind. The only downside is the exposing of how our Judicial System treats the Treatment of a serious illness as another point of Law. They should be ashamed and the Judge should be also for overturning a Jury verdict. They wonder why people have no respect for the Law and Jury Trials.

3 out of 5 stars becarefull what you call a cure.......2000-07-09

I have Mantle Cell Lymphoma. There is no cure. I don't what people to stop fighting. I believe that there is a danger sent here in that many people like myself will die before we are afforded the same opportunity. What is Mr. Murdoch doing with the proceeds from this book? If this book was written for noble reasons than donate all the money for this story as to not come across like an elitist who was given a chance to live that others won't. There are many inspiring tales of survival - for those of us that are sick - I certainly don't want to be reminded that he was privaleged. I feel like this was a bit sensationalist.

5 out of 5 stars Momma, don't let your babies grow up and become lawyers!.......2000-06-05

This was a riveting story - - read it! You will be uplifted most of the time, and outraged by the final conclusion. Many heros emerge in the telling of this heart-pounding story - - from Murdock the patient to the scientists working in the laboratory to the clinicians offering new hope to cancer victims. Two noteworthy anti-heroes also emerge, U. S. District Court Judge Roderick McKelvie and plaintiffs' attorney Donald R. Ware of Foley, Hoag & Eliot, Boston, MA, whose use of arcane points of law ensured cancer victims would be denied potential life saving technology. These two should enter into a suicide pact to honor the patients who died as a result of their efforts. Interestingly, Mr. Ware's firm represented big business in the book "A Civil Action", another legal saga in which cancer victims were denied.

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting Insights.......2007-10-09

Being a lost soul in the sense that I have no idea what to do with my life, Dan Millman gives some insight into what drives my ambitions, interests, strengths and weaknesses. This is a very interesting book that should be shared with friends and family, not necessarily as a roadmap for one's life, but as a guide to seeing what your life (and others like you) could be. It is also great as a spooky "hey, check this out" item to use with your pals.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful resource.......2007-10-02

I have used this book for years as an resource for developing great questions for couples who are working through issues or considering marriage - a great conversation starter. I have shared this book with a number of counselor friends in several areas and think it is a source that is helpful for those who think mathematically and for those who think figuratively. Millman guides folks in a way that can open up even more possibilities and when folks are "stuck" with a problem to solve or a life issue to resolve some new thinking modes are helpful and often productive. I think overall folks think it is a fun mode of self exploration.

5 out of 5 stars Great Numerology System.......2007-08-09

I had this as required reading for my Reiki classes and it was Great. Enough said.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!.......2007-01-12

Dan Millman has done it again! His common sense approach to living life on life's terms is demonstrated again in this enlightening book, plus a personal look at my life (and yours) and how to make the most of it. His detailed description of the life I was meant to live spoke to me about what I came here to learn, where I am in the spectrum of learning it, and what tools I can use to go further, all in a down-to-earth, non-judgmental way. Some of my friends also enjoyed hearing about their lives, and we could see that much of what was in the book was a true description of the traits of each other. I'd highly recommend this book.
