5 out of 5 stars excellent collection of tables.......2001-04-19

If you have Sokal and Rohlf's Biometry book it pays to get these tables. They are referenced throughout the book and it is convenient to have them to do most of the problems.

One thing to watch out for is to make sure that the edition of the tables matches the edition of the text. I have the second edition of the book and the third edition of the tables. The authors removed eight tables in the third edition and instead of using the numbering system of the second edition, they switched to letters floowed by double letters after they ran through the alphabet.

There are many useful tables and explanations are given, so they can be used independently of the text. However, if you get the text you will want the tables. The tables are referenced in numerous interesting and instructive examples in the text.

In the Preface to the Second Edition the authors say that the tables are there for pedigogical reasons only and they chose not to include them in the text because in these days pocket calculators can often be used as replacements for tables. Nevertheless without realizing it the reader does become dependent on these tables to get a full understanding of the examples.

If you get the book get the tables also. If you just want to have a reference set of statistical tables they are useful but I much prefer the "Pocket Book of Statistical Tables" by Odeh and Owens.

      Book Description

Statistics in Geography has established itself as the best introductory textbook on the subject: the author makes statistical concepts and techniques intellible and their applications in a wide variety of problems comprehensible, even exciting. The main feature of this much-awaited new edition is a set of 17 computer programs (with sample outputs) that cover nearly all the statistical techniques described. These have been carefully written to be user-friendly in an elementary subset of Basic to make them simple to implement on most micro computers. This means students can be more adventurous in their applications and interpretations of statistical techniques. The author has, at the same time, retained all the worked examples in the book so that the reader can gain insight into the logic of the methds by working through them by hand. These, together with problems of various levels of complexity plus comprehensive answers at the back of the book, provide the student with a clear and thorough understanding of both the methods and their potential applications.

      Book Description

This lively collection of essays examines in witty detail the history of some of the concepts involved in bringing statistical argument "to the table," and some of the pitfalls that have been encountered. The topics range from seventeenth-century medicine and the circulation of blood, to the cause of the Great Depression and the effect of the California gold discoveries of 1848 upon price levels, to the determinations of the shape of the Earth and the speed of light, to the meter of Virgil's poetry and the prediction of the Second Coming of Christ. The title essay tells how the statistician Karl Pearson came to issue the challenge to put "statistics on the table" to the economists Marshall, Keynes, and Pigou in 1911. The 1911 dispute involved the effect of parental alcoholism upon children, but the challenge is general and timeless: important arguments require evidence, and quantitative evidence requires statistical evaluation. Some essays examine deep and subtle statistical ideas such as the aggregation and regression paradoxes; others tell of the origin of the Average Man and the evaluation of fingerprints as a forerunner of the use of DNA in forensic science. Several of the essays are entirely nontechnical; all examine statistical ideas with an ironic eye for their essence and what their history can tell us about current disputes.

I returned this item a while ago, and haven't heard from Amazon since! I may have been over the 30 day limit. But I did send the book back! What should I do now? Sorry!
It was in good condition when I received it. I just didn't need it.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to understand where statistical ideas come from........2005-07-27

The author is a well-known statistician who has also a gift as historian. The book is a collection of essays on the development of the main ideas in Statistics. These essays are not in chronological order and overlap on several points. That can create some confusion in the reader. The first essay is about the controversy on the effect of parents' alcoholism on children between Karl Pearson and the Cambridge economists (A. Marshall, J.M. Keynes, A. Pigou). While Pearson expected harsh criticism from the medical profession he was unexpectedly broadsided by economists on the ground of logic instead of data. Pearson's response was: statistics on the table, please. The book goes on clarifying the developments of the main ideas in the field: Central Limit Theorem, Normal distribution, least squares, degrees of freedom, regression, Bayes's Theorem, and so on. It also provide the role of famous mathematicians like Gauss, Laplace, Legendre and others. However, Pearson, Galton and Edgeworth maintain a high visibility in the book. It is not a reference book of the historical development of ideas and intuitions in Statistics, and few chapters reflect more the interest of the author than the coherence with the title "Statistics on the Table. The History of Statistical Concepts and Methods" like in Statistics and Standards, and The Trial of the Pyx, or Apollo Mathematicus. Outstanding and funny is the chapter Stigler's law of Eponymy, which states that no scientific discovery is named after its original discoverer. It is definitively an enjoyable reading and I strongly recommend it to whoever has an interest, weak or strong, in the subject.

5 out of 5 stars great examples of good use of statistics in history.......2000-07-31

Stephen Stigler is a well-known statistician and author. He is also one of the few statisticians to do intense research on historical facts related to the development of the field. He has written other fine books on the history of statistics. This book concentrates on stories in the history of statistics where statistical analyses were done that had an impact and the statisticians laid their cards on the table. Too often, even today claims are made that require statistical evidence but the evidence is lacking, or some of the assumptions are hidden. Starting with the controversy between Karl Pearson and the Cambridge economists, Stigler shows how important it is to bring out the assumptions and methods used to make the case convincing and how not to fall into subtle traps. He also points out that attribution of a method to a person does not usually go to the discoverer. He calls it Stigler's Law of Eponymy. Examples include Chebychev's inequality discovered earlier by Bienayme and the Gaussian distribution associated with Gauss but known earlier by De Moivre and Laplace. He also includes a chapter questioning whether Thomas Bayes was the discoverer of Bayes's Theorem.

Well written and thoroughly researched, this is a great reference book on aspects of the history of statistics. This book is typical of what we have learned to expect from Stigler.

5 out of 5 stars Concise introductory book on history of statistics.......2000-03-07

Professor Stephen M. Stigler has written a very worthwhile textbook on the history of statistics, or, more accurately, the development of statistics in modern Western civilization. This book is not a strict chronology of the development of statistical science: it is more of a collection of profiles of profound, significant events that shaped the scientific community and the World at large.

Readers will be amazed by the author's knowledge and insights in this special corner of historical research, and can also look forward to a presentation of compelling stories and gripping dramas, complemented by the author's trademark wit and humour.

Given its position as one of the leading college text books in the history of statistics, this book is perhaps less accessible to a general audience compared with the recent crop of "popular science" books such as "Fermat's Enigma"; but any learned readers should nevertheless find this a highly informative and worthwhile book.

5 out of 5 stars An informative introduction to statistics and their uses........2000-03-04

These essays examine some of the basic concepts involved in bringing statistical argument to the table, and considers the history of statistics and their methods and use. Essential to any college-level math course on the topic, Statistics on the Table probes how statisticians link statistics to social issues and daily life, providing essays which examine statistical ideas and their impact.

5 out of 5 stars Presenting Your Findings: A Practical Guide for Creating Tables .......2007-09-08

It's a great and fantastic textbook hhelping me start my profssional research in International Education.
I love it very very much.

5 out of 5 stars You can create any table by using this book as a guideline.......2007-01-12

No matter how complex your table will be, if you use this book as your guideline, you will be able to create it. The reviewer who claimed this is not true probably wanted them to give him the exact table. Their book would have been 1,000+ pages long to give an example of every combination of every table.

What this book gives you is the foundation upon which to build tables. Whenever you aren't sure how to build your table, just take a quick gander through the appropriate section(s) of this book, and follow their guidelines -- do NOT try to copy. Your result will be an excellent, easy-to-follow table.

1 out of 5 stars Maybe for the APA style..........2003-05-03

I was deeply disappointed with the book. The tables look as done with a typewriter, good for those missing that 70's thesis. Apparently nobody told the authors that p-values are no longer to be reported as p <0.05, but with their full value. And finally, there is no "clever" solution to more complex tables, but just tons of tables with pretty standard results. What is reported in the tables is not widely applicable too. In my area - epidemiology - we do not report standard errors, we report confidence intervals. We also do not report mean squares, f-values, or t-values, or chi-squared-values and so on - we report only the full p-values. If you're not into APA, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars No more puzzling over tables!.......2002-02-19

This is an invaluable resource for anyone who needs to present their research results in APA style. This is not a statistics text but rather a manual for generating tables. Each chapter focuses on a different statistic and includes a "play it safe" comprehensive table as well as several variations. Well-organized, practical, and concise.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Students and Professionals Using APA Style.......2000-04-28

This book has been needed for twenty years. Students and professional researchers who write dissertations and manuscripts using APA style have desperately needed this very helpful resource. The book illustrates standard presentation tables for more than twenty types of standard statistical tests. The concept of "Play It Safe" tables will save researchers hundreds of hours of time. The table illustrations are clear and precise depending on the focus of the data to be presented. The few words that are written prior to presenting a table are helpful in clarifying the data contained in the tables. One small problem is noted. It would have been helpful to include how APA style recommends reporting statistical data in paragraph form in this book also. Despite this omission, I still give this book 5 stars.

2 out of 5 stars Flimsy book for the price.......2000-09-01

I am really unimpressed with the quality of the binding of this title, which is not typical of most Wiley textbooks I own (this one is actually printed and bound by WILEY EASTERN New Delhi, India). It has a fairly strong, irritating chemical smell that is giving me slight headache even as I type this. The pages seem as if they are about to drop out of hard cover because the spine appears to be substantially wider than the number of pages inside. (the book, when open, definitely lays flat). The paper is not very opaque. The text lettering is not crisp (almost as if printed with an ink jet printer). Some pages are printed lightly, others pages are printed darker and a bit blurry. Given the large number of minor flaws, I'm skeptical this is a fluke and for the list price and year of publication (1995), I think the book should have seen much better quality control.

The text comes with a "statistical program package SAND" written in GWBASIC that runs on MS-DOS machines. However, the diskette is the large 5 1/4" 360Kb floppy, making the software virtually useless to many/most users in the US. Again, for the price, this is inappropriate. The authors' work appears to be a fairly admirable attempt, but the smell keeps me from concentrating on it closely. My copy will go back, but I hope a future reviewer with more patience than me can give the actual contents more thorough study.

        Book Description

From forensics and security to pharmaceuticals and environmental applications, spectroscopic detection is one of the most cost-effective methods for identifying chemical compounds in a wide range of disciplines. For spectroscopic information, correlation charts are far more easily used than tables, especially for scientists and students whose own areas of specialization may lie elsewhere. The CRC Handbook of Fundamental Spectroscopic Correlation Charts provides a collection of spectroscopic information and unique correlation charts for use in the interpretation of spectroscopic measurements. The handbook presents useful analysis and assignment of spectra and structural elucidation of organic and organometallic molecules. The correlation charts are compiled from an extensive search of spectroscopic literature and contain current, detailed information that includes new results for many compounds. The handbook includes graphical data charts for nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the most useful nuclei, as well as infrared and ultraviolet spectrophotometry. Because mass spectrometry data is not best represented graphically, the data are presented in tabular form, where mass spectrometry can be used for analyses and structural determinations in tandem with other techniques. In addition to presenting absorption bands and intensities for a variety of important functional groups and chemical families, the book also discusses instrument calibration, diagnostics, common solvents, fragmentation patterns, several practical conversion tables, and laboratory safety. Not intended to replace reference works that provide exhaustive spectral charts on specific compound classes, this book fills the need for fundamental charts that are needed on a general, day-to-day basis. The CRC Handbook of Fundamental Spectroscopic Correlation Charts is an ideal laboratory companion for students and professionals in academic, industrial, and government labs.

            Book Description

Sensory discriminative analysis forms a fundamental type of methodology and is used widely in sensory and consumer research. Sensory Discrimination Tests and Measurements: Statistical Principles, Procedures and Tables provides a comprehensive discussion of sensory discriminative analysis from a statistical perspective. A wide variety of test and measurement methods, which were developed during the past decades and scattered in various statistical and non-statistical journals, are included in the book. The book gives a unified picture of the state of the subject and reflects some features of advanced sensory discriminative analysis. Designed to be both a reference manual and a research monograph, practitioners will discover various useful test and measurement procedures. More statistically-oriented readers will find the statistical considerations behind the procedures. Sensory Discrimination Tests and Measurements will be of interest to everyone concerned with testing and measuring sensory difference and consumer preference.
