Required Class reading.......2007-05-12
I bought this book for a class that I was taking in Bioethics. At first glance the book looked very dry. But actually it was well organized and well written. I don't know if I would have read this text without it being a requirement but for the class it was a good choice. I also enjoyed the case studies that were at the end of every chapter.

Book Description
This is a comprehensive introduction to the ethical issues at stake in the conduct of biomedical research, with extensive use of case examples. Its content parallels the recommendations of the Commission on Research Integrity, and deals with ethical issues in the use of animals and humans in research. It includes chapters on intellectual property, authorship, peer review, and conflicts of interest. As of October 2000, all personnel involved in research supported by the Public Health Service, including NIH, must receive the equivalent of 15 hours of training and education in research ethics. This book will be a convenient text for such short courses or seminars, and an excellent guidebook for all.
Book Description
The ORI Introduction to the Responsible Conduct of Research draws together in a single, easy-to-read book the fundamentals of responsible research. Readers are guided through the complex world of regulations and best practices, from initial design through to publication. Each chapter is devoted to one of ORI’s nine core areas, include: research misconduct, human and animal research, data management, conflict of interest, collaboration, mentoring, authorship and peer review.
While it is often assumed that researchers learn responsible practices on the job, many do not. And unfortunately, sometimes what they learn on the job is misguided or wrong. The ORI Introduction to RCR provides an easy way for anyone from beginning undergraduate researcher to experienced postdoc, faculty member or industrial scientist to learn what society expects of them as professionals. Opening cases, study questions, and additional readings make this book ideal for classroom use. A series of original cartoons by artist David Zinn at the beginning of each chapter use humor as a way to engage the reader in this serious and vitally important topic.
This important and authoritative publication was created by the U.S. Government to further activities and support programs that enhance education in the responsible conduct of scientific research. It supplements existing resources by making a comprehensive overview of basic rules of the road for responsible research available to all Public Health Service funded researchers, with a special focus on the needs of small and mid-size research institution and beginning researchers in mind.

Helpful Guide to Ethical Questions in Research.......2005-10-26
The book was brief, to the point and helpful in explaining some of the contemporary ethical questions involved in writing a research article or paper, especially when co-authors are involved. It could be used as a textbook for a class because each section included ethical questions for debate.
A valuable resource . . ........2000-04-01
This well-written primer grounds both neophyte and experienced scientist in the culture of Western science as it is today. It explores such topics as values in science, conflicts of interest, assigning of credit, and authorship conventions, meanwhile managing to shed useful light on a whole range of other topics. I would recommend this book to any scientist, science student, or person interested in pursuing the sciences. "On Being a Scientist" fosters interest in the sciences and builds a foundation upon which to become a more informed, responsible, and productive researcher. Additionally, this text could benefit educators, policy-makers, and nonscientists by giving them a window into the pressures and experiences associated with life in the scientific realm.
Without being discouraging or unrealistically sanguine, this concise document lays out the conventions, factors, and shifts of perspective that scientists today need to know about both regarding behavioral expectations within the disciplines and the roles of science and scientist in the public domain. Subtler points of a largely unspoken scientific etiquette are also elaborated, and knowledge of these conventions and expectations can go a long way toward preventing harmful mistakes of omission, misunderstandings, and hard feelings among scientists, colleagues, and student researchers.
Ethically challenging case studies at the end of each section stimulate reflection and discussion on ethical decisions that can be especially fruitful in science or ethics of science courses. In relatively few pages, this book plants a broad spread of ideas and perspectives in the developing scientists' mind. Accounts of scientists' responses to potentially awkward or unethical situations are helpful and extend the range of possible approaches today's scientists might take given similar dilemmas (i.e. credit for pulsars).
Traditional ideas and newer ones meld together for clear, often insightful outcomes. For example, an early chapter plainly states: "Citations are part of the reward system of science." That fact and the importance of reputation have long been a reality in scientific circles. On the other end of the spectrum, one the closing chapters alludes to the limits of science in forming public policies: "But science offers only one window on human experience. While upholding the honor of their profession, scientists must seek to avoid putting scientific knowledge on a pedestal above knowledge obtained through other means." This is definitely a view that has only more recently been acknowledged. Kudos to the National Academy of Sciences for an effective, well-rounded essay on science, scientists, and responsible conduct!

Book Description
The issues raised by research in animal behavior are often different from those raised by research in molecular biology and pharmacology. Studies of animal behavior often bring scientists into close and prolonged contact with their subjects. Due to this proximity, some researchers may feel confronted with the ethics of certain practices concerning human-animal interaction, especially when many investigators have been involved. The issue becomes even more controversial due to the fact that lay people in society often identify with the emotional reactions of animals. This book addresses the particular dilemmas and issues of relevance to the field of animal behavior. Part I concerns changing research practices and rules from both the institutional and personal perspective. The author considers the transformation of patterns of acceptable use in law and within the American Psychological Association, as well as the changing perspective with which scientists may evaluate some of their past work. Part II focuses on current issues regarding animal research and how scientists make practical decisions regarding their experimental subjects. Part III explores ways of assessing the animal's well, preferably by asking the animal. Finally, part IV discusses the influences animals can exert on research practitioners, although those affected may not be aware of it, and animal activism.

Book Description
May human genes be patented?
How can fraud be distinguished from error?
Should freedom of research still be protected?
Questions like these have recently been broadly discussed in general newspapers and magazines. They threaten to shatter the foundations of modern science.
This book shows that responsible conduct of research is possible. It provides the basis for the social capabilities required for present and future decision-makers in science and industry. Step by step it introduces the reader to the most common ethical dilemmas of science and offers a framework for their deliberation and resolution. At the end of each chapter, 'Questions for discussion' and 'case studies' establish the connection between the problems described and the daily work of the reader. Extensive lists of further reading encourage deeper examination of a specific question. Being a reference book for executives as well as a textbook for students, this book is a must for every scientist who wants free research to continue in the next millennium.
The author is director of the Responsible Conduct of Research Project and Assistant Professor at the University of South Florida. She teaches courses in Applied Ethics at several colleges.

From the author: Fiduciary responsibility, ethical conduct, compliance--If you are a recipient of federal funds, you have seen the increased focus on these issues. Headlines that broadcast "falsified results," "scapegoats," "whistleblowers," "scientific hoaxes," and "misconduct in investigations" have increased the awareness of legislators and taxpayers of the potential for misappropriation of funds, misuse of research subjects and falsification of data. In an attempt to educate future scientists on what constitutes responsible conduct in research, federal funding agencies are strongly urging that recipients of federal funds train researchers in ethical conduct. At the Institute of Ecosystem Studies (IES), we have used a forum of discussion groups centered on case studies to address not only these issues but the more subtle behaviors than can impact researchers and their research. These case studies, developed for our program by our staff, go well beyond the obvious black and white breaches of ethics such as plagiarism, to explore the gray area of day-to-day behaviors that alienate or exploit colleagues. While these case studies raise difficult issues within our scientific community, they provide a non-threatening avenue for discussion about complex and often contentious topics which are less clear cut, sometimes more insidious, and can be harder to resolve. At IES responsible conduct is viewed as encompassing more than just deliberate and illegal acts of fraud and misconduct. Responsible Conduct includes the interactions of colleagues, peers, senior staff and junior staff and how these interactions impact scientific research, careers and collaborations. It is our belief that this forum for Responsible Conduct in Research Education can serve as a model for other institutions and their administrators and research staff either as a standalone resource or as part of a broader educational program, and that the topics covered in our discussions should be an integral part of any responsible conduct program.

From the author: We are exploring whether mandated instruction in the responsible conduct of research (RCR) has measurable effects. NIH F32 postdoctoral fellowship awardees are being interviewed and evaluated at different points in their training to determine their awareness, attentiveness, and behavioral judgments related to research ethics. This study includes a 3-wave telephone survey and web-based case study vignettes in one core area of RCR content, authorship and publication practices. Of 431 F32 fellows, approximately 37% had completed their RCR training prior to their fellowship. About 44% had not taken formal RCR training, and approximately 17% were unaware of the RCR training requirement for F32 awardees. Approximately 25% of the respondents who had completed RCR instruction took a course for credit while 75% did not. Initial comparisons between those who have and have not completed RCR training showed only a few significant differences between groups. Awareness of authorship guidelines and ethically appropriate behavioral judgments were common among both groups, raising the possibility of ceiling effects. F32 fellows had, on average, 8.7 years research experience and 6.4 publications to their credit. Analysis of the completed data set should afford a greater understanding of RCR effectiveness and may suggest ways to improve RCR teaching.
