A slightly different perspective?.......2007-08-24
After "retiring" for the second time in my life, I found myself in a position to attend "re-training" due to the fact that I had closed my corporation after selling my business. In other words, the state considered me "unemployed". One of my options was a trade school and their programs. HVAC\R seemed interesting so I went with it. The above mentioned book was the standard issue. At first I was very pleased with it, although I did struggle to get through the chapters. I thought it was me, although in my first four "courses" I was carrying a 99% average, and tutoring younger students in Manual J, Manual D, and Heating Controls. It wasn't me. As I have had time to study this industry at my own pace, taking courses when I want, and taking time off to hone my skills with those in the business, I find that there are many books available that are much easier to understand, read, and follow. These "other" books contain as much, if not more practical information, and relate to real world requirements much easier, without having to decipher what the edited author intended. Had I not been "given" this book as a part of my "tuition", I would now be screaming for my money back. For what ever it is worth, one of the authors has written books on his own and they are excellent. I actually purchased several for "fellow students" that were struggling and these students were helped immensely. Perhaps it is the company that published the book. I am not sure. But I do know that I have looked at other books published by the the same company and have either returned them or not purchased them in the first place. Just my opinion. I may be correct, I may not.
Of the best books that I have.......2007-05-13
Many pictures, good text, complete, I recommend it. For all those that begin and they are already work in HVACR. The only problem is that it doesn't work with units international system (metric). It could be an international book. Greetings from spain.
great book for learning refrigeration.......2006-11-15
as a homeowner considering central air and seeing how idiot contractors screw people firsthand, I wanted to learn as much as I could about refrigeration and HVAC before hiring anybody. This book is great, from a design and selection standpoint on refrigeration all the way to installation and maintenance practices. I can easily see why it's a college textbook, too bad my college texts back in the day didn't explain the subject as well. You can basically read this book and understand refrigeration without taking a class.
refrigeration & air conditioning technology 5th edition .......2006-11-10
nice book the price is high but you'll be happy that you have it!
awesome.......2006-08-25
The book is really concise and packed with very useful illustrations. I would recommend this book to anyone- beginner or advanced.

Modern Refrigeration Resource.......2005-07-25
Thanks to the length of time this book has been available and the frequent revisions to the copyright, it continues to get bigger and better as time goes on.
My bookshelf has at least 5 of those revisions that frequently get utilized . Each revision builds upon the prior publication and expands on the detail they provide.
This publication represents an established reference standard for the HVAC/R Industry. It is especially valuable because of the extent of the different technical topics presented within its covers.
Some have tried to copy the format and the content but still fail to match its quality and level of professionalism.
Modern Refrigeration and Air Conditioning ........2005-05-28
This book is really a disaster for whom who want to learn somthing from HVAC/R.It's full of controversies(not their typo),full of headlines not much of a detail.I do not understand how come a book with 18th edition still making basic mistakes like saying thing cotroversial to each other.I had to buy another book from Whitman Johnson and Tomczyk.
good general reference.......2003-07-20
We have used this book as a study textbook for the last two semesters at college. As a student it has proven to be very useful. It has very good illustrations and diagrams along with helpful insight to the nuts and bolts of all A/C units. Where the frustration part comes in and is a mystery to me is what ever department that was responsible for reviewing the end of chapter questions and the questions in the test bank dropped the ball. It is quite evident that the questions and the text don't correspond. This leads one to believe that the department that is responsible for test questions and chapter questions do not have a back-ground in Air Conditioning / Refrigeration. I have used a lot of frustrating time in a futile effort to match answers with text. Its a shame that such an informative textbook be degraded on default.
Book Description
Ideal for students and beginning technicians, Electricity for Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning, 6E zeroes in on the basic electrical principles necessary to understand today's modern control systems. This extraordinarily practical approach allows readers to focus exclusively on the electronics information they will use in the field, without bogging them down in unnecessary theory. Newly-updated in direct response to user feedback, this edition now features all-new chapters on electrical safety, reading wiring diagrams, and troubleshooting modern HVAC-R control systems and circuitry. A second color has also been added throughout the book to highlight "must-know" information for readers, such as the circuits being discussed in schematic diagrams, as well as the direction of the current flow within circuits. As in past editions, emphasis is on developing systematic diagnosis and troubleshooting methods and procedures in order to enable readers to become highly-skilled, professional HVAC-R service technicians. A comprehensive glossary is also included to assist those who are new to the field in understanding and using industry terms.

Hoodwinked!.......2006-10-06
This book cost $108.00 and is full of errors. The instructor of my Intro To Control Class has contacted the publisher but to no avail. I am struggling in a course that I have always wanted to take and although my instructor is fanstastic this book gets a big fat F- from me. This book has failed and I hope that anyone who is forced to pay for this book isn't stuck paying full price. It's just not worth it!
Another high-priced clunker from Thomson.......2004-11-24
This book was used in my "Fundamentals of Electricity" course in a technical college air-conditioning (AC) program. It was selected because it was the only text specifically for AC. We used the first third of the book. I'm an older student, have two years of university credits, and have seen a lot of technical and vocational training material. This book is simply awful. I have never had to struggle with a textbook so hard as with this one. Grammatical errors were abundant. The review questions were poorly written. Illustrations were occasionally mis-labeled, out of sequence or just plain wrong. Where the material raised a question, it was often left unanswered, but unasked questions were answered in excruciating detail. I had to use 4 other books to fill gaps left by this one. Most insulting was the price: $108. There are better books that cover basic electricity, some aimed at HVAC. I used Proctor & Mazur's books from ATP to fill some gaps. Additionally, ARI's "Refrigeration and Air Conditioning" has a good treatment, which is clearly written.
A fantastic refererence for your HVAC/R library.......2001-04-15
I love the way the author set this book up. You gradually build on what you learn and never really feel that you are being thrown in to hard. The writing is fantastic. Not to difficult in technological terms for the novice and yet levels with the seasoned veteran just right. When you complete a chapter , you are introduced to a " In the field scenario" service call. You imagine yourself at the call working out the problem in the component. You see how to step by step, use the common sense approach to troubleshooting and gain good skills in those procedures. The calls vary from simple to very complex. One thing is for very certain. You will enjoy having this book in your professional HVAC/R library.

Basic but inexpensive book.......2007-09-19
As someone above pointed out, this is a very basic book. The theory in it is ridiculously oversimplified and the description of many working and diagnostic procedures lacks detail. On the other hand, it is not very expensive compare to other books on the subject.
Will not recommeded, useless information........2007-06-29
Well written book if it's still 1995, this book is out-dated and ancient. It was published in 1995, it don't even cover any of the tools and gauges we use today to trouble shoot or service the modern air conditioner or Refrigeration Systems. This book should be thrown away, it had useless information as of June 2007.
Perfect book for Joe Homeowner.......2007-06-27
This is a great book for the basics about you AC unit in the house. Helped me work (successfully) on my own unit. I don't think it would be helpful if someone wanted a more detailed book like a professional.
Pleased South African.......2007-05-19
The info covers both basics and detail in a easy to read and comprehend manner, I have a vending machine business and needed to know more about refrigeration.

great books.......2002-10-02
this book is helping me to gain the education i need to support my family thank you
the best.......2002-08-31
I am an hvac technician, and this book was more clearly written and logically written than any book in its field that i have read.(and I have read a lot of books}.
It is considered the bible of the hvac industry- highly recommended!
Very good on its purpose.......2002-04-19
This book is surely one of the best available for its purpose, that is, to give an introduction to the refrigeration and air conditioning technology, and also to teach how to install, service, and maintain all the hardware associated with this.
The text is very well writen, in a very clever language. Graphics are very good, and very helpful to the understanding of topics. Sections dedicated to the electrical and electronic sub-systems were a surprise: they are also very clear, and are very helpful even for experienced technicians. There are even sections dedicated to airflow at conditioned spaces, a matter that isn't very well undestood by technicians.
I strongly suggest this book to the people that wants to start working in this technical area, and also to that who already work with it. Very useful to the begginer and to the experienced technician as well.
Be careful.........2001-09-27
Be careful if you're buying this book for college. The sellers usually do not indicate which edition they are selling - and anything older than the 4th edition will be completely useless to to you.

Best Book on Industrial Refrigeration Systems.......2006-09-14
It's an oldie, but a goodie! It's still useful ,relevant and dependable. For readers who want the kindergarten pictorial paperback, here you will be greatly disappointed. It does have clear schematical drawings and diagrams,in no-nonsense black and white. The formulas and equations are plentiful and helpful. It's just the best handbook on all aspects and applications for workplace industrial refrigeration operations.I have not found another ,in this particular area, that is on par or better than this one.
Great info, but not for the average person.......2004-04-27
I enjoyed reading this book as a more intermediate industrial Mechanic, but for that price I expected a book with glossy pictures. I feel the book was over priced for a bunch of pages with drawings. Just a few black and white pics of equipment, and lots of complicated other stuff. The best pic was the cover. To really teach somebody this field you need to be a lot more visual.
I wouldn't recommend this book to a beginner. It would be a bit frustrating. But for someone who just wants a reference book with lots of useful information I think this book is for you.
The book for all refrigeration system designers.......2000-06-04
I have covered this book in length-no other book or handbook comes close in terms of simplicity of it's explaination. The latest ASHRAE Refrigeration Handbook is a good reference to have when using this book as there are cross references.Value for money and looking forward to the next book that would be specific on Ammonia Refrigeration Systems design.

great book!.......2003-03-05
I have been in the Hvac trade for years, this book has become my Hvac bible. alot of books cover theory on equipment that is obsolete and dont give you you specific info, this book is on the mark for everything an HVAC tech needs in the field. I recommend this book to all who are in the trade.

This new ?standard? for the climate control industry will help readers pass the NATE, ICE, RSES Certification, HVAC Excellence, and HVAC Technician Licensing Exams. Innovative coverage also makes this exam guide extremely useful for studying and preparing for the state limited energy license and HVAC contractor licenses.
Customer Reviews:
A good start.......2007-08-14
This is a good book to start with to review for the NATE or other tests. It only has a limited number of questions though. I took the NATE Heat Pump test and passed with this books help, but it only had 50 sample questions for Heat Pump's and the NATE test had 100 questions. My suggestion is that there be more sample questions. I'd also like to see a reference for additional information if you don't understand a question. This book serves a purpose, but could be a better tool...
Industry Standard for the NATE exam.......2006-08-08
This book is absolutely the standard for the NATE Exam. Not only does it give you insight on the types of questions to study for, but it gives you information on how to beat the test writers at their own game. A very good read!

review of AC and Refrig Repair by Fisher.......2005-09-30
I found the text to be very useful, although it was not the complete and through guide that I was hoping for. That would probably be in the factory shop manual for the central airconditioner that I am attempting to troubleshoot, and those are hard to come by.

Out of Date and Very Basic.......2004-10-26
This book is an excellent primer for someone that has no prior knowledge of A/C systems. It is very dated and lacks information on the newer systems and refrigerants.
