Book Description

If alcoholics and addicts won't accept help until they are ready, what gets them ready? This book provides an answer in clear and concise terms. Dispelling two damaging myths - that an addict has to hit bottom and that intervention must be confrontational - the authors' proven approach puts love first and shows families, step by step, what to do next.

4 out of 5 stars Great .......2007-07-24

This book is great for anyone interested in learning about addiction. It gives a well rounded and educated approach for an intervention. Although, I would probably use more books than just this for a reference if you're going to try an intervention, but that is just from experience.

4 out of 5 stars Hazelden?? Be Very Afraid.........2007-04-21

If you have an addiction...Dont choose Hazelden as a place to start your recovery. I'm a Graduate of Tiebout and stayed at the Hotel Jelinek. They will try to brainwash you by using meds.

5 out of 5 stars Immeasurable!.......2007-04-10

This book is an INCREDIBLE help - even if you don't end up doing an intervention for your loved one. It's title derives from the term "Tough Love," and theorizes putting LOVE FIRST. It gives clear and concise explanations of every aspect of addiction and treatment to those who aren't quite understanding the whole picture. If you are, or are dealing with, friends and/or family of an addict, this book is a must-read. If you do choose to do an intervention, it gives step-by-step instruction on how to do it with love, and includes all the organizational tools you'll need.

5 out of 5 stars Love First.......2007-01-19

This is a very good book. If you have anyone in your life who has an addiction that is out of control, you should read this and take action immediately. This book gives you all of the tools you need to plan an intervention and get treatment for the addiction.

5 out of 5 stars A Godsend.......2007-01-04

Our intervention group followed the suggestions for a successful intervention to the letter. This was a valuable guide. Our intervention was successful, and I believe a huge part of that success came from the "how to" format presented in this text. The book provided answers for every possible scenario and explained the logic behind the recommendations.

Book Description

Addiction and Grace offers an inspiring and hope–filled vision for those who desire to explore the mystery of who and what they really are. May examines the "processes of attachment" that lead to addiction and describes the relationship between addiction and spiritual awareness. He also details the various addictions from which we can suffer, not only to substances like alcohol and drugs, but to work, sex, performance, responsibility, and intimacy.

Drawing on his experience as a psychiatrist working with the chemically dependent, May emphasizes that addiction represents an attempt to assert complete control over our lives. Addiction and Grace is a compassionate and wise treatment of a topic of major concern in these most addictive of times, one that can provide a critical yet hopeful guide to a place of freedom based on contemplative spirituality.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A well balanced approach to recovery.......2007-10-05

Usually, books on addiction approach the subject in one of two ways; they are either fluffy and impractical, or exclusively practical and miss something about spirituality and the human need of seeking something bigger than oneself to lean on. This is the rare that does both. May talks about brain chemistry as much as he speaks to philosophy and spirituality. This book is a must for anyone who wants to work with any level of addiction and understand both the physiological as well as the spiritual need of the addict in recovery.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and uplifting.......2007-09-20

One of the best books written on the topic, even for those without drug or alcohol addiction. Great insight into how we humans work and how we can allow grace to nourish our hearts.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful hope for recovery!.......2007-08-28

This book plainly discusses addictions, the hope for recovery and the fact that we can turn to God's power for healing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book about addition and grace.......2007-08-21

This book by Dr. May is an excellent resource in understanding the depths of addiction and the only way to really face and deal with them - through grace. God's grace is what we all need to deal everyday with each of our own addictions. Dr. May points out that everyone has some type of addiction, it's not just food, money, sex, etc. but so many other things as well. He helps you to feel okay about yourself and that there is hope for your addiction problems and that hope is in God.

5 out of 5 stars The Broken Vessel.......2007-06-12

Like the Japanese-zen-inspired vase that integrates imperfection into its very beauty, so Gerald May fashions from our addictions a way of spiritual transformation. The book itself is a mini-journey from mind to heart where we are first led to cognitively understand the physical, neurological basis of addiction, to an inner heart-recognition that the energy of addiction is the same longing for Wholeness that fills us all. Here's the thing about grace. There may be a few out there who can beat their addictions into submission by force of will - but even so the achievement will be short-changed. In Budhist terms - you may have pulled yourself out of the muck but you did not allow the lotus to bloom ike you could have. Instead, if you consecrate (May's term) the power of the addiction, if you integrate the energy of craving into a place where effort and surrender meet half way, you will see, accept, some day even give thanks for the imperfection that allowed the broken vessel that you are become an instrument of beauty and of good.

Book Description

"Candy is beside me, drenched in sweat. She's breathing gently, long slow breaths. I imagine her soul going in and out: wanting to leave, wanting to come back, wanting to leave, wanting to come back. The day will soon harden into what we need to do. But for now we have each other. . . ."

He met Candy amid a lush Sydney summer. Gorgeous, sexy, free-spirited Candy. They fell in love fast, lots of laughter and lust, the days melting warmly into each other. He never planned to give her a habit. But she wanted a taste. And wasn't love, after all, about sharing lives? Candy had a bit of money and in the beginning, everything was beautiful. Heady, heroin-hazed days, the world open and inviting. But when the money ran out, the craving remained, and the days ceased their luxurious stretch.

But there was still love. Only now, it was a threesome. Heroin had its own demands, its own timetable, and thoughts of nabbing the next fix hurled them into each day. Then, when desperation sets in, Candy will stop at nothing to secure a blast, as she and her lover become hostage to the nightmarish world of addiction.

Painful, sexy, tender, and charged with dark humor, Candy provocatively charts the daily rituals of two lovers maintaining a long-term junk habit. Told in stunningly vivid prose and set against the backdrop of suburban and urban Australia, Candy is both an electrifying and frightening glimpse of contemporary life and love.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!.......2007-09-16

"Candy" is an accurate story of the daily life and consequences of an addict. Well written and true to life, "Candy" gives an inside look at an addict's mind and relationships. Loved it!

3 out of 5 stars It was ok.............2007-05-30

This book was pretty realistic, nothing exaggerated. It was a raw picture of what addiction is like. But I just didn't enjoy the book's style, and that could be a personal problem, but the book kind of got boring after a while. I ended up renting the movie and not finishing the book.

5 out of 5 stars Candy.......2007-05-23

This was an awesome book. Better than the movie. It was happy and it was sad but over all beautifully written.

5 out of 5 stars Eye Opener.......2007-04-10

Firstly, it has to be said - the movie is half baked compared to the book - as is usually the case, but I just had to say it.

This books shows the reader how easy it is for any of us, to make a choice which can effectively turn your life into a spiral going down, down, down ... and how easy it is to take someone there with you, intentionally or otherwise.

It was a great read - very eye opening and incredibly fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars Kept me interested.......2007-03-16

The characters were real and I could feel emotions for them through out the book. The story was very real. It was a sad story but very interesting. Usually it takes me a month to finish a book but with this one I finished it in less than a week. I found myself always reading with every free moment I found. I even sent it to my sister when I was finished.

Book Description

In her extraordinary bestseller, Adrian Nicole LeBlanc immerses readers in the intricacies of the ghetto, revealing the true sagas lurking behind the headlines of gangsta glamour, gold-drenched drug dealers, and street-corner society. Focusing on two romances -- Jessica's dizzying infatuation with a hugely successful young heroin dealer, Boy George, and Coco's first love with Jessica's little brother, Cesar -- Random Family is the story of young people trying to outrun their destinies. Jessica and Boy George ride the wild adventure between riches and ruin, while Coco and Cesar stick closer to the street, all four caught in a precarious dance between survival and death. Friends get murdered; the DEA and FBI investigate Boy George; Cesar becomes a fugitive; Jessica and Coco endure homelessness, betrayal, the heartbreaking separation of prison, and, throughout it all, the insidious damage of poverty.

Charting the tumultuous cycle of the generations -- as girls become mothers, boys become criminals, and hope struggles against deprivation -- LeBlanc slips behind the cold statistics and sensationalism and comes back with a riveting, haunting, and true story.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Absolutely, AMAZING/AWESOME!".......2007-08-11

This awesome book, which is Adrian Nicole LeBlanc's "first" book is mesmerizing! Even after I put the book down as I finished it all I could tell my sister was that the book was "Awesome." I was left in a way shaken about how great it was and how grateful I should be, but how grateful I am not. Though I understood their situations (I was never familiar with it in my own life but I can still understand for reasons I can't write down here) I was left astonished and touched. It is not only mesmerizing because of the book itself; but because this was her first book and she did an outstanding job. This book has touched my heart and I can NEVER forget about the characters and the sadness that wafted in and out of this book. It will always be with me and for that I am thankful. It also reminds me to be thankful for the life that I have, and to never again wish that I had a life without boundaries. Non-the-less I wish I had the opportunity to meet these outstanding people, but even if I did met them I wouldn't know what to say. EVERYONE MUST READ THIS. Everyone. So pick it up today. You won't regret it, nor be able to put it down. It is now my most favorite book, and I will continue to read it over and over again, until it's etched in my heart like an old friend and a memory of which I'll never forget...Nor want to.

5 out of 5 stars Will pull you in and not let you go..........2007-03-05

I read this book as a recommend from a friend that it be the first in our private 'book club' and when I went in, I thought I wouldn't like it very well at all. I couldn't have been more wrong. I couldn't put it down! I was shocked and horrified by the life these people lived and the last passage made me cry. Really recommend this book to anyone who would like to have a more realistic look at poverty and life in the 'projects'. I myself, having always thought I grew up rather 'poor' came away feeling like life had dealt me a pretty good hand.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Book.......2007-02-16

LeBlanc spent years and years with her subjects, getting a wonderful, holistic view of their lives. I cannot get over the beauty of this book.

3 out of 5 stars Undigested.......2007-02-10

I returned to Random Family recently, after learning that LeBlanc was awarded a MacArthur. My opinion, however, hasn't changed. This book contains an extraordinary amount of reporting, almost completely undigested. LeBlanc leave us uninformed about her role in the lives of her subjects - yet how could she not have played a role, given that she followed them about for 10 years? As an authorial strategy, this is, at best, ill-advised - we're left with the nagging suspicion we're not getting the whole story. At worst, it's ethically suspect - is there something she's trying to cover up?

Beyond this, however, my major complaint is LeBlanc's failure to provide a complete context for these people. Are we to believe they are "typical" of young people growing up in a Spanish-speaking commiunity the Bronx? Atypical? How does their community as a whole regard them? (It's a bit like reading one of the many cheap, unsatisfying books about the Mafia, which invariably fail to situate the mob within the larger Italian-American community - much of which regard the goodfellas as scum.) The Hispanic community in the Bronx and upper Manhattan is large but quite social and close-knit, with just as many subsets and hierarchical layers as any other. It's unlikely that, even for Coco and her friends, the world consists entirely of immediate family, random family, and the police, prison, and other authorities. Yet LeBlanc's persistently microscopic perspective provides no sense of how her small group of subjects interacted with the neighborhoods and extended families that make up their larger world.

Again, I'm left with questions: Was LeBlanc really completely uninterested in the larger community that Coco and her friends are part of? Did she really think that this larger world doesn't matter? The absence of any of this helps give the series of events that make up Random Family an ad nauseum quality - at times, almost pornographic, since one doesn't know how to react to a lot of it except on a very simplistic emotional, physical, and moral level (see some of the other comments entered here).

I imagine LeBlanc's text read better as a series of magazine pieces - snapshots of life in the barrio. This also may be the reason it was praised (if I remember right) by a lot of metro-desk reporters. But as a book, its objective is unclear and its authorial strategy weak. The result is fairly engrossing for about 100 pages, after which it goes nowhere and LaBlanc's endless reporting begins to seem like compensation for any clear thematic framework. I was not surprised when, rather than come to a conclusion, it abruptly stops. I give Random Family three stars for the volume of reporting behind it - but only for that.

5 out of 5 stars One of my top 20 books of all time.......2006-12-19

I read Random Family three years ago and the intensity of emotion and vivid memory of the characters has stayed with me in a very strong and visceral way. Adrian LeBlanc has a way of bringing to life the people whose lives she chronicles here and clearly gets to know quite intimately. I found myself getting very attached to the characters, particularly Coco and her children, as the second half of the book unfolded...I have been periodically looking to see if she has written any other books since Random Family. Even through the despair and hard times we witness these everyday people going through, we sense a wonder of life and living that is at the core human and universal. Having worked with youth in urban areas over the past twenty years, I highly recommend this book for teachers, after school program staff and anyone whose lives have been touched by young people.

5 out of 5 stars Omamori - A second reading.......2006-09-27

This novel was written I believe in 1988. As it says in the back of the book, it took the author 7 years to write it. Much like Gone With The Wind, it came across to me as a once in a lifetime book and I guess this author has not written anything since. A real shame. As my title said, this was my second reading of this novel. The first perhaps at least 15 years ago. I think I even liked it more the second time. I read mostly at lunch time and while waiting for traffic to pass, so that I can get home as fast as possible. For this novel however, I kept on sneaking just another paragraph or two in between sales calls all day long and many times I had to reach for the hankerchief to wipe my eyes. I happen to love multi generational novels that take 30 to 100 years to play out such as Jeffrey Archer's "As the Crow Flies". This novel which starts in 1871 japan and goes to the end of WWII has everything that you would ever want in a novel. I would have to rate it as one of the best books that I have ever read. If you can find a copy buy it without haste.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping and historic.......2003-11-29

I am very picky about what I read and only "go" into a storyline if it will increase my knowledge and thoroughly entertain me. This book did an exceptional job of both. I read Omamori about 5 years ago and picked it up again because I was out of good things to read (imagine that!). I knew very little about the effects of the war on Japan and loved "being there".

Whenever someone tells me they are in a reading, author or genre slump, I suggest this book. It is the best time I have ever had reading.

5 out of 5 stars Omamori.......2003-06-24

This book was purchased for me by my DH. It is the best book I have ever read. The contents are historical and Richard must have done a tremendous amount of research in order to write this book. I could not put it down. I would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2003-06-17

This is my favorite book of all time. I borrowed it from a friend and read it years ago. I absolutely loved it, but a good friend always returns borrowed books! When I tried to buy it myself, I was told it was out of print. I was thinking about it recently and realized that I could probably find it on this site. Duh!!! Well, I just ordered it and cannot wait to receive and read it all over again and lend it to people who I know will appreciate it.

It's not just a story about love, it's about family, honor, sacrifice, friendship, culture and of course WWII from many different perspectives. I learned a lot, I laughed, I loved and I cried and when I was finished with this book, even though the ending was as happy as it could have been, I felt like I was losing my best friend. I remember when I was finished, I just sat in my room holding the book, silent in thought for almost an hour. Strange. It is a must read!!

Book Description

Prozac, Xanax, Halcion, Haldol, Lithium. These psychiatric drugs--and dozens of other short-term "solutions"--are being prescribed by doctors across the country as a quick antidote to depression, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other psychiatric problems. But at what cost?In this searing, myth-shattering expos, psychiatrist Peter R. Breggin, M.D., breaks throughthe hype and false promises surrounding the "New Psychiatry" and shows how dangerous, even potentially brain-damaging, many of its drugs and treatments are. He asserts that:psychiatric drugs are spreading an epidemic of long-term brain damage; mental "illnesses" like schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety disorder have never been proven to be genetic or even physical in origin, but are under the jurisdiction of medical doctors; millions of schoolchildren, housewives, elderly people, and others are labeled with medical diagnoses and treated with authoritarian interventions, rather than being patiently listened to, understood, and helped.Toxic Psychiatry sounds a passionate, much-needed wake-up call for everyone who plays a part, active or passive, in America's ever-increasing dependence on harmful psychiatric drugs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars tOXIC pSYCHIATRY.......2007-08-07

This book will open your eyes to the myth that if you can't fix something with a pill, then it can't be fixed at all.

An exvellent read. A bit advanced, but still can be followed and understood. A word of warning: If you have a psychiatrist treating you, he/she probably won't appreciate your input from this book. But I still think it informs and then allows you to discuss treatment options more factually, as opposed to just being passive in your care decisions.

A must read for those who find themselves blindly accepting yet another prescription, because the doctor said to.

5 out of 5 stars Global Drug Abuse!.......2007-01-06

Peter Breggin is the Erin Brokovich of the Psychopharmaceutical Industry! The widespread "chemical abuse" of millions of people by psychiatrists, is an international crime! Peter Breggen's book(s) are the most powerful whistleblower revelations against this global multi-billion dollar psychiatry industry. Governments need to recognise that they are actually funding with billions of taxpayer dollars, the barbaric brain damaging and controlling of multitudes of people they are elected to protect.

"Toxic Psychiatry" is more than a wake up call, it is trumpet call to confront this diabolical nazi-like "poisoning" of millions! It is a must read for all. Having been involved in counselling for nearly 30 years, I have seen first hand the dis-diagnoses and subsequent mind-altering "treatments" of the psychiatric fraternity empowered by the psychopharmaceutical giants. The results of lifelong enslavement to "diagnostic labelling" and to the chronic poisoning by mind/body disabling medications, is a modern day holocaust affecting millions, which continues to be supported by governments of most nations.

2 out of 5 stars Toxic psyachiatry is toxic for parents of the mentally ill.......2006-11-05

I was going to assign this book to my students in my Abnormal Psychology class... The first chapter is powerful and true. However, this author irresponsibly attacks the parents of the mentally ill as responsible for their children's illnesses!!!! He also attacks NAMI, the National Association of the Mentally Ill, an organization that has helped more mentally ill patients recover, find support and their way to a successful and meaningful life, and has truly educated more people about mental illness than Breggin has ever done himself, I am sure. The good points the book makes about inadequate and even harmful psychiatric care in mental institutions are, in my opinion, obfuscated by his unwarranted attacks on parents -- attacks, I believe, that may be a result of his old-fashioned psychoanalytical training.

5 out of 5 stars Only people that has right to say anything about these drugs are the people that have taken them.......2006-05-23

Some people think they are so smart that they know everything about these drugs and chemistry, no matter how smart you are and lets say youre #1 top psychiatrists in the world. If you havent taken the SSRI yourself and experienced the damaging affect of these drugs, you cant say anything PERIOD. Not even if you invented the drug !!!!! Why do we have so many people complaining about these drugs? duh maybe because there is a problem and causing problems!!!, people who havent tried or experience the damaging affects afterwards dont see why people are complaining. We dont see books about warning people not to take for example flu shots do we? No. I used to be one of those people who believed and that popping a pill can solve my life problems but Now because of SSRI my life is ruined and have permanant problems that wont go away. And for people who are currently on SSRI, pills will never ever cure depression unless you stay on them forever,Im sure you are happy with those fake smiles, see what happens when you taper off of them. And people who are FOR these drugs should immediately go to doctors and try them and see how safe they are. I recommend you try prozac first. If that dont work out dont worry there are plenty others that doctors will want you to try. HAHAHA so sad that there are still people out there in this country that really believe these pills can help them.

5 out of 5 stars Argh!.......2006-02-13

I couldn't resist writing this. The ad hominem abusive, straw man, slippery slope and other fallacies running rampant in some of the other reviews are just ridiculous!

First off, comparing insulin to brain chemistry is not a logical argument! Just because it has been proven that certain levels of insulin are necessary for proper metabolism, it does not mean that brain chemistry works the same way!! The two processes are completely different. One is very well understood and proven, while the other is not understood well at all and is definately not proven. Using this logic, I could say that diabetics take insulin, therefore I must take lead to fix my "electrostatic disorder." I cannot invent a disorder in this way, except in a work of fiction! Beware of "convincing" analogies, especially ones that seem like common sense, they are all too often wrong, wrong, wrong, and more wrong.

Breggin also has been in private practice since 1968. If he spent a few years being an expert witness in lawsuits, then that only shows his dedication to his cause, not that he has been "gallivanting around" as one reviewer seems to think! If you want to know a little about Breggin, try http://Breggin.org.

Also, Breggin does not oversimplify the problem and say that "all drugs cause brain damage." He quotes case studies and peer-reviewed journal writings concerning specific drugs and specific disorders. He does not draw his conclusions out of thin air and make only blanket statements! There are no rabbits being pulled out of any hats anywhere but in the review I'm commenting on.

And another thing, just because someone is depressed, it does not mean they will commit suicide! Stop convincing people that they will kill themselves if they don't recieve drugs! It cripples people and makes them unwilling to help themselves! It's not logical and is NOT shown through any studies that a majority of depressed people will kill themselves if not medicated. In fact, studies have shown that the biggest factor of whether a patient improves or not is whether they believe that they will get better or not, it is not whether they recieve psychotropic drugs or not.

Breggin also does not come anywhere close to making it seem that patients are defined by their illness! It's laughable to suggest the notion having read the book! He demands the utmost respect for even the most troubled persons and I believe he shows how there is more to the person that their disorder by his disgust for how psychiatrists don't look for the reasons for a person's disorder but instead only try to match a person to the "diagnostic criteria" of the DSM IV. If anything, the practice of matching patients to illnesses defines a person by their "illness," NOT Breggin's perspective of the patient.

Also, to say that Breggin "throws the baby out with the bathwater," while admitting the book has several good points, only to give it one star is a bit ironic and hypocritical, don't you think?

And in closing for this review.. Just because Tom Cruise and the wacky Scientologists are anti-psychiatry, it does not mean that there is nothing wrong with psychiatry. That is an obvious ad hominem circumstancial fallacy if I have ever heard one. (For those who have no idea what that means, it means that just because someone is part of a group, it does not mean that a statement they have said is wrong. A group may be known for their likely incorrect viewpoints, but it does not make untrue all of the beliefs of every group member. An example would be how Hitler created the idea for the Volkswagon Beatle. The Nazi's were wrong for mass murdering Jews, but that doesn't mean that they were also wrong in thinking that smaller, more efficient cars could actually be a good thing for society.)

    Book Description

What happens to the "we" of a family when one member opts for the blind and single-minded "me" of addiction? In an instructive, reassuring way, Craig Nakken explains just how families and couples who have spent years building a life together can lose their cohesive identity and meaning in the wake of addiction. The perfect starting point in the healing process, this book also reminds us that recovery is possible--for individuals, couples, and whole families--if only we know what to do. With histories, personal stories, and the latest research, the book helps readers chart their own way out of the hell of addiction and back to the fullness of family by using principles that restore the "we" of lasting, loving relationships. Craig Nakken, M.S.W., author of The Addictive Personality and Men's Issues in Recovery, lectures, trains, and specializes as a family therapist in the treatment of addiction. He lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

This book inspires and encourages continued recovery. Highly recommended for those directly and indirectly involved with recovery.

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyed it!.......2005-02-22

Dear K, I love the book and I'm so glad you were published in it because otherwise I might not have read it. After 18 years of sobriety, I'm still inspired by an individual's story of addiction, the necessary desperation that leads to the first step, and their journey to recovery. Although it's the kind of book I might reread, when I'm finished I'll probably pass it on to someone that I think needs to read it and hope it keeps getting passed along until it's worn out. This book won't go out of style. PAP

5 out of 5 stars Very encouraging book.......2005-02-09

I think you can't go wrong with this book. The stories are encouraging and uplifting which is what someone in recovery needs, in my opinion. I've even highlighted pages so that I can go back and re-read what really spoke to me. I'd recommend buying this book in heartbeat.

    5 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong........2004-12-15

What a wonderful collection of inspiring pieces from a broad section of the recovering community. Each story offers a glimpse at the challenges faced and how individuals reclaimed what was rightfully theirs - health, happiness and hope. I'd recommend it for anyone entering recovery as well as those who are already living a recovering lifestyle.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2004-12-14

The Chicken Soup books have been a good read in the past. This one seemed to be the perfect Christmas gift for friends in recovery, so I purchased three copies (there were no reviews to assist my decision.) After reading some of the book, I quickly became disappointed. The stories seem to lack substance or the inspiration experienced in other Chicken Soup books. The stories described difficult events, but no insight as to how the individuals came to find peace and serenity. Basically it was, "I had this situation, and now I don't." In the future, I will wait until there are reviews to guide my purchases.

    Book Description

The basic premise of this book is that chemical dependency is a disease — the alcoholic/addict is a sick person not a bad person. This disease affects not only the addicted person but those who love that person as well. This is a book that will help the "others" affected by chemical dependency to become well.

My Dad Loves Me My Dad Has A Disease was originally written as a result of Claudia Black's work with young people who had a parent in treatment for their alcoholism. These children were learning at a very young age that it was not safe for them to openly talk about their family experiences. Art therapy was a wonderful medium for them to find the words and a voice in which to talk honestly. It was also a wonderful tool in which to not only share feelings but to problem solve, lessen denial, and to put words to that which was so confusing.

The original pictures were all drawn and the stories written by children age five through fourteen that had one or two alcoholic parents. After many years and thousands of children using this workbook, it has been revised to address the fact that today, if a child lives with addiction, it may not be alcohol addiction. The family member may be addicted to other drugs as well. Words have been rewritten, some pictures changed and new pictures added making it possible for more children of addiction to experience their own recovery process.

Many years ago when Claudia Black was a counselor in an alcohol and drug treatment program, she asked a six-year-old daughter of a man in treatment for his addiction if she knew why her father was in this program. The girl paused and with confidence said, My Dad Loves Me, but My Dad Has a Disease. In spite of her father's addiction she knew her father loved her. That is a message Claudia would like all young people to be able to believe. Unfortunately when people are addicted they often lose the ability to act in loving ways toward those they love.Growing up in an addicted family usually means living by the rule: it is not all right to talk about the drinking or using in your family. Having been raised in an alcoholic family herself, by the age of six Claudia shared the feelings of loneliness, fear and frustration of her family.

Working through the loneliness, fear and frustration by expressing feelings is what this book is all about. This workbook gives children the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings and to better understand addiction.

Although this workbook was designed for and the illustrations created by young children, it may also hold insights for the now adult age person raised in an addictive home.

Great book for explaining alcoholism to kids. They seemed to relate to the pictures. I will read it to them on occasion.

    5 out of 5 stars Children of Alcoholics - a young perspective.......2007-08-03

A rare find. While most other publications are geared to teenagers or adults living with addicted parents, this book offers younger children's perspectives. It combines young children's artwork and observations about the problems they have to cope with along with a helpful guide/workbook to help explain this disease. Reading through this with a 6 year old was an amazing experience. In the first chapter, she was able to recognize the signs and understand that others are going through the same experiences. I wish there were more books like this.

    1 out of 5 stars Hilariously Melodramatic.......2006-06-12

The only thing this book is good for is getting high with your friends then reading the dialogue aloud. The thought that anyone actually believes or takes the "situations" in this crap serious is so befuddling it's scary. This is nothing more than propaganda for some strange religious cult. I don't know about you but if I'm going to buy a book to help me with my kids it's going to be by an expert, not some failed fiction writer.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2002-02-28

I bought this book in the 80's and it did wonders for me! It helped me to get control of "me" again... and I went forward with my son from there.

    5 out of 5 stars Description.......1999-07-19

Having a child addicted to alcohol or drugs is one of the most heartbreaking and challenging problems that parents may face. Here, in a revision of her bestselling 1982 book, Neff offers practical, loving and completely updated help to those struggling with that situation. Although the specific 12-step program that Neff stresses does not exist everywhere, parents can adopt the principles she outlines and form support groups with other parents. Central to Neff's approach is "detachment from the abuser," which entails allowing the abuser to "bottom out" without "padding the corners" (often called "enabling" in other references). This method, argues Neff, provides one of the few hopes for the abuser and his or her family. It is also terrifying, however, to parents who lack the support and distancing of the tough-love approach. By far the largest part of Neff's book is devoted to the stories of seven families who have faced the crisis of the addicted child and come through it stronger and more spiritually intact. In short, this book should be required reading for every parent with a child in trouble.
