In the introduction to the book, the author defines a helicopter as an aircraft that uses rotating wings to provide lift, propulsion, and control. He then discusses briefly the basic physical principles that a helicopter needs in order to sustain vertical lift, as well as to move translationally. The design engineer must then weigh the factors that enable the helicopter to move against the maintenance and human factors involved in the use of the helicopter for transportation. The rest of the book is then an extremely detailed and fascinating account of the engineering analysis that goes into the design of a succesful helicopter. The author also overviews the history behind the helicopter, beginning with the Chinese rotor, circa 400 B.C. and with the first succesful flight with one passenger, and one meter above the ground, for about one minute, by Breguet-Richet of France in 1907. The author remarks that helicopter engineering currently emphasizes research and development than with invention. This is especially true in the military environment, with the Apache helicopter being a superb example of just how sophisticated a helicopter can be. It will be interesting to see how the technology and design of helicopters will change in the decades ahead. The trend might be towards pilotless flight for delivering military supplies or manufactured goods from one point to another, or perhaps helicopters that can morph into completely vertical or horizontal aircraft as the need arises.
The physics behind vertical flight is described by the author as 'momentum theory', which was developed for marine propellors in the late nineteenth century. As the name implies, this is just an application of the principle of conservation of momentum. The rotor disk of the helicopter feels a thrust created by the action of the air on the helicopter blades. It must therefore exert an equal and opposite force on the air. This forces the velocity of the air in the rotor wake to be opposite in direction to the direction of the thrust. Momentum conservation, energy conservation, and mass conservation then give a relation between the induced power loss and the rotor thrust. The author also gives details on the 'vortex theory', which is based more on fluid dynamical laws of the flow field of the rotor wake. Emphasizing the local aspects, it reduces to momentum theory in appropriate limits. The author also shows how momentum theory applies to the forward flight of the helicopter.
The author also treats helicopter performance analysis, which boils down to determining the power required and available for a range of flight conditions. The rotor forces and power must be calculated, and the author details two methods to do this: the 'force balance method' and the 'energy balance method'. The use of the computer has made this analysis considerably easier for the design engineer of course. The author gives a very interesting overview of helicopter speed limitations and how the helicopter could be landed safely after an engine failure, all of this being analyzed from a physics perspective.
The mathematics of rotating systems is included in the book, along with the differential equations of motion for the rotor blade. The motion of the blade is expanded into a normal mode representation and analyzed using Sturm-Liouville theory. The author though outlines other approaches to the blade dynamics, such as the Lagrangian formulation and the Galerkin method. And also, in spite of the ability of computers to solve for the aeroelastic equations of motion, the author considers their analytical solution for the cases where such solutions can be obtained. One very interesting part of this discussion was that of 'ground resonance', which is a dynamic instability involving the the coupling of the blade lag motion with the in-plane motion of the rotor hub. There is then a resonance between the frequency of the rotor lag motion and the natural frequency of the structure supporting the rotor.

The future under a New World Order........2002-09-16
Jim Keith, who I find after some research, was one of the leading writers in government activities. With Black Helicopters Over America he raises some interesting questions. What is our military doing? What exactly does the government have in mind for our future? What part does our government play in the political machinations of the United Nations?
Keith lays out the plans for a New World Order. He describes an international police force under U.N. direction. He shows the groundwork for the disarmament of the people and the rights that we could lose in the new world state. Keith also describes a future of concentration camps for those that would speak out against the New World Order.
Black Helicopters is a straightforward book laden with factual events and policies. However, though the events and policies may be factual, the context and details of those entries can sometimes seem questionable. As with most any issue, facts can be arranged to display the picture the writer wants to be seen.
The material in the book is a bit dated. Even though it was published in 1994, events in the book date back as far as the 1950s. Most of the events presented are from the 1970s. This in itself softens the credibility of the text. While writing this review, I did find out that Keith published a follow up book in 1998 titled Black Helicopters II : The End Game Strategy. I would imagine that the follow up takes the reader current, up to 1998. It may be worth the time for interested parties to read this book to see if Keith presents more recent events that would add credibility to his arguments.
If anything, Keith does present enough information to make the reader think. In fact, Keith urges the reader to step back and take at look at the information that is available. In my opinion, the underlying point of Black Helicopters is: To make educated decisions based on researched facts and to understand your government and what it is doing. It is something to think about.
Propaganda for idiots, filled with factual errors.......2002-03-13
A friend of mine gave it to me as a joke gift, and I immediately found all the timelines about cattle mutilations, black helicopters, and other urban (rural?) legends to be slightly less interesting than reading the phonebook.
Factual errors include descriptions of the AH-64 Apache helicopter as a "troop transport" (it's an attack helicopter and it cannot hold any troops at all), a reference to the military base at "St John, Canada, near Montreal" (the town is called St-Jean-sur-Richeleu and there hasn't been a base there for years, now it's just an army language school), and descriptions of helicopter crews wearing cowboy hats (what, no helmets or intercom headsets?)...
Opening chapter of book deals with cattle mutilations!.......2000-04-23
Keith opens this important work by having the reader seek to know more! You will discover Keith's incredible ability to ferret out the dark side of the Globalists....and how some of Keith's books reveal much more about secret "underground" biologicals developments for the "NEW ORDER". This book has the opening chapter dealing with cattle mutilations, so that should tell you something about what Keith has uncovered! CLOSTRIDIA, per DOD-docs presented by RN Joyce Riley reveal that Keith is on the right track! Jim Keith was quite nervous in revealing on the ART BELL show that CLOSTRIDIA was related to strange cattle mutilations, despite all the rest of the "entertainment" regarding that topic....and this book will provoke you to research more about WACO, et al!

Friendly Fire
Scott A. Snook Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0691005060 |
Book Description
On April 14, 1994, two U.S. Air Force F-15 fighters accidentally shot down two U.S. Army Black Hawk Helicopters over Northern Iraq, killing all twenty-six peacekeepers onboard. In response to this disaster the complete array of military and civilian investigative and judicial procedures ran their course. After almost two years of investigation with virtually unlimited resources, no culprit emerged, no bad guy showed himself, no smoking gun was found. This book attempts to make sense of this tragedy--a tragedy that on its surface makes no sense at all. With almost twenty years in uniform and a Ph.D. in organizational behavior, Lieutenant Colonel Snook writes from a unique perspective. A victim of friendly fire himself, he develops individual, group, organizational, and cross-level accounts of the accident and applies a rigorous analysis based on behavioral science theory to account for critical links in the causal chain of events. By explaining separate pieces of the puzzle, and analyzing each at a different level, the author removes much of the mystery surrounding the shootdown. Based on a grounded theory analysis, Snook offers a dynamic, cross-level mechanism he calls "practical drift"--the slow, steady uncoupling of practice from written procedure--to complete his explanation.
His conclusion is disturbing. This accident happened because, or perhaps in spite of everyone behaving just the way we would expect them to behave, just the way theory would predict. The shootdown was a normal accident in a highly reliable organization.

Robust Autonomous Guidance: An Internal Model Approach (Advances in Industrial Control)
Alberto Isidori , Lorenzo Marconi , and Ohio State University Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1852336951 |
Book Description
A typical plant control system will be subject to the undesirable influence of exogenous commands and disturbances. In order to track and reject these Professor Isidori and his co-authors have designed a feedback control system based on embedding a model of these disturbances within the controller itself - the so-called "internal model".
Beginning with a review of the fundamental principles of internal-model-based feedback control design, Robust Autonomous Guidance moves on to expound recent enhancements to such designs and then to their implementation in systems operating under conditions of great uncertainty.
The three case studies presented: attitude control of a low-Earth-orbit satellite and the landing of fixed- and rotary-winged aircraft on a ship involve control systems coping with a high degree of nonlinear behaviour. The key issues addressed in each case study are the design of an adaptive internal model for the specific tracking task and of stabilizing control capable of steering the tracking error to zero while keeping all internal states bounded for any arbitrarily large but bounded envelope of initial data and uncertain parameters. Nested saturated controls form the basis of novel tools for asymptotic analysis and design.
Robust Autonomous Guidance will be of great interest to academic and industrial researchers working with nonlinear control systems and to engineers involved in the design of aerospatial guidance systems. It will also be a useful reference for graduate students working with non-linear systems.
