Comprehensive Textbook.......2007-04-04
This is a comprehensive textbook which covers in detail most of what an aeronautical engineering graduate interested in this subject will find useful and handy. This is not a book for the novice but for those with good engineering and mathematics background seeking in-depth knowledge of the helicopter design, rotary wing aerodynamics, stability and control, helicopter performance and many more.
For the target audience, the book is well written with clear explanations and sufficient detail.
The book has stood the test of time (having been published in 1980) although it can benefit from an update to take into account the latest helicopter designs.
Helicopter Theory.......2004-02-16
OK for a reference book, but much too bulky for any classroom. Mr. Johnson would do well to write an abridged addition. There does not appear to be any attempt to start with basic concepts and proceed to more difficult ones. Try to get a copy to review before buying it.
Advanced concepts.......2003-11-26
This book is quite difficult to understand and the concepts contained in it are quite complicated. With that in mind, and the fact that I did not understand most of it, I can't fairly rate it. I will however warn any potential buyer that a thorough knowledge of Calculus and Matrix Algebra is required to fully understand the text.
Excellent job.......2002-12-03
I picked up this book with the intent of getting some ideas for physics demonstrations that illustrate the physics of helicopter flight. Also, I was curious as to why helicopters are not made that are three, four, or perhaps ten times the size that they are now, and if chaotic dynamics could be present in helicopters. Over a thousand pages long, this book gave me what I needed and much more. Written for design and mechanical engineers who are involved in helicopter manufacturing, the book could be read profitably by anyone who is curious about the physical principles behind helicopters.
In the introduction to the book, the author defines a helicopter as an aircraft that uses rotating wings to provide lift, propulsion, and control. He then discusses briefly the basic physical principles that a helicopter needs in order to sustain vertical lift, as well as to move translationally. The design engineer must then weigh the factors that enable the helicopter to move against the maintenance and human factors involved in the use of the helicopter for transportation. The rest of the book is then an extremely detailed and fascinating account of the engineering analysis that goes into the design of a succesful helicopter. The author also overviews the history behind the helicopter, beginning with the Chinese rotor, circa 400 B.C. and with the first succesful flight with one passenger, and one meter above the ground, for about one minute, by Breguet-Richet of France in 1907. The author remarks that helicopter engineering currently emphasizes research and development than with invention. This is especially true in the military environment, with the Apache helicopter being a superb example of just how sophisticated a helicopter can be. It will be interesting to see how the technology and design of helicopters will change in the decades ahead. The trend might be towards pilotless flight for delivering military supplies or manufactured goods from one point to another, or perhaps helicopters that can morph into completely vertical or horizontal aircraft as the need arises.
The physics behind vertical flight is described by the author as 'momentum theory', which was developed for marine propellors in the late nineteenth century. As the name implies, this is just an application of the principle of conservation of momentum. The rotor disk of the helicopter feels a thrust created by the action of the air on the helicopter blades. It must therefore exert an equal and opposite force on the air. This forces the velocity of the air in the rotor wake to be opposite in direction to the direction of the thrust. Momentum conservation, energy conservation, and mass conservation then give a relation between the induced power loss and the rotor thrust. The author also gives details on the 'vortex theory', which is based more on fluid dynamical laws of the flow field of the rotor wake. Emphasizing the local aspects, it reduces to momentum theory in appropriate limits. The author also shows how momentum theory applies to the forward flight of the helicopter.
The author also treats helicopter performance analysis, which boils down to determining the power required and available for a range of flight conditions. The rotor forces and power must be calculated, and the author details two methods to do this: the 'force balance method' and the 'energy balance method'. The use of the computer has made this analysis considerably easier for the design engineer of course. The author gives a very interesting overview of helicopter speed limitations and how the helicopter could be landed safely after an engine failure, all of this being analyzed from a physics perspective.
The mathematics of rotating systems is included in the book, along with the differential equations of motion for the rotor blade. The motion of the blade is expanded into a normal mode representation and analyzed using Sturm-Liouville theory. The author though outlines other approaches to the blade dynamics, such as the Lagrangian formulation and the Galerkin method. And also, in spite of the ability of computers to solve for the aeroelastic equations of motion, the author considers their analytical solution for the cases where such solutions can be obtained. One very interesting part of this discussion was that of 'ground resonance', which is a dynamic instability involving the the coupling of the blade lag motion with the in-plane motion of the rotor hub. There is then a resonance between the frequency of the rotor lag motion and the natural frequency of the structure supporting the rotor.
Essential resource for Helicopter Engineering.......2000-02-15
The title is succinct and accurate: "Helicopter Theory" is a very complete reference on the engineering theory of helicopters. This book is aimed at the aeronautical engineering graduate student or practicing aeronautical engineer looking to understand helicopter aerodynamics, stability and control, and (to some extent) structural dynamics. Although the treatment of non-articulated rotors is somewhat skimpy (likely because the book was written in 1980), most other helicopter subjects are dealt with in great depth and reasonable clarity. The treatment of the 90 degree phase shift between rotor pitching and flapping, perhaps THE fundamental concept in understanding helicopters, is particularly good. A must for anyone seriously working with the detailed design and analysis of helicopters.

Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Terrible.. DO NOT BUY.......2006-11-03
I purchased this book for a college course at Embry Riddle. I was so disappointed at the quality of the book. It is very poorly written and gives very few examples. Aerodynamics for the Navel aviator is a much better book. AVOID THIS PIECE OF JUNK!
A great book for flight professionals.......2000-11-11
This text offers an algegraic approach to basic aerodynamics, air craft performance, plus limited coverage of helicopters. The chapters are now managebable for use in a college level introductory aerodynamics course primarily geared toward flight students, in any of the new emerging college curriculum. The book's organization has improved significantly over the first edition. The text is easy to read with good practical examples but there is a level of sophistication above most of the other aerodynamics texts geared for pilots. Practicing aviation professionals will also gain from use of this text. In short, I would say that the book is ideal for college level aviation programs and practicing aviation professionals.
Fantastic guidance for aerodynamics theory.......2000-08-25

Customer Reviews:
If you can't get the basic facts right..........2004-08-12
... how are we supposed to believe your theories that are harder to substantiate?
The litany of errors is hilarious.
Davis-Monthan AFB in Tuscon, AZ is alternately named "David Monthan," "Davis Munson," and "David Munson." Any road map could've provided the correct information.
Ft. Indiantown Gap in PA is similarly renamed about 3 different times.
Among the most amusing contention are the 30,000 "UN troops" stationed in Barstow, CA. First, Barstow doesn't have the water supply to support the 22,000 people that do live there. Second, the "UN troops" were probably soldiers from nearby Ft. Irwin, who wear different uniforms because their job is to portray the bad guys for units who come there to train (and there are fewer than 2500 of them). Third, why Barstow? What are they going to do, take down Las Vegas? And would anyone miss it if they did?
The best of all, though, is the cargo train of New World Order UN vehicles travelling through the western states. Keith claims they are "BMP-40s." They are quitely clearly Canadian Grizzly armored cars and M113 personnel carriers. Had anyone bothered to compare the timing of this train and the training schedule at the National Training Center, they would've known that the Canadians had a regiment of troops training with the Americans and these were the Canadian vehicles going home. When "Soldier of Fortune" debunks your cornerstone theory and dismisses it as the ravings of a right-wing lunatic, you know you're in trouble.
The Russian tanks seen on flatbeds near Gowen Field, ID and El Paso, TX? Probably going to the local weapons ranges to be shot at, since we've been using Russian tanks for target practice for decades, to test the effectiveness of our own weapons.
All in all, this is worth reading for the humor in it. But not worth spending money on. Unfortunately, there's no lower rating you can give than one star, but this one deserves to be in the negative.
The future under a New World Order........2002-09-16
I approach this book as an outsider to this genre. I'm not big conspiracy theory buff. I'm not a survivalist. Nor am I a die-hard political fanatic. Like most Americans, I go about my life vaguely aware of what's happening in our government. Given that, I went into this book with an open mind.
Jim Keith, who I find after some research, was one of the leading writers in government activities. With Black Helicopters Over America he raises some interesting questions. What is our military doing? What exactly does the government have in mind for our future? What part does our government play in the political machinations of the United Nations?
Keith lays out the plans for a New World Order. He describes an international police force under U.N. direction. He shows the groundwork for the disarmament of the people and the rights that we could lose in the new world state. Keith also describes a future of concentration camps for those that would speak out against the New World Order.
Black Helicopters is a straightforward book laden with factual events and policies. However, though the events and policies may be factual, the context and details of those entries can sometimes seem questionable. As with most any issue, facts can be arranged to display the picture the writer wants to be seen.
The material in the book is a bit dated. Even though it was published in 1994, events in the book date back as far as the 1950s. Most of the events presented are from the 1970s. This in itself softens the credibility of the text. While writing this review, I did find out that Keith published a follow up book in 1998 titled Black Helicopters II : The End Game Strategy. I would imagine that the follow up takes the reader current, up to 1998. It may be worth the time for interested parties to read this book to see if Keith presents more recent events that would add credibility to his arguments.
If anything, Keith does present enough information to make the reader think. In fact, Keith urges the reader to step back and take at look at the information that is available. In my opinion, the underlying point of Black Helicopters is: To make educated decisions based on researched facts and to understand your government and what it is doing. It is something to think about.
Propaganda for idiots, filled with factual errors.......2002-03-13
It is such a shame amazon.com doesn't allow for a "bomb" or "zero star" rating, because if ever a book merited one, this would be it.
A friend of mine gave it to me as a joke gift, and I immediately found all the timelines about cattle mutilations, black helicopters, and other urban (rural?) legends to be slightly less interesting than reading the phonebook.
Factual errors include descriptions of the AH-64 Apache helicopter as a "troop transport" (it's an attack helicopter and it cannot hold any troops at all), a reference to the military base at "St John, Canada, near Montreal" (the town is called St-Jean-sur-Richeleu and there hasn't been a base there for years, now it's just an army language school), and descriptions of helicopter crews wearing cowboy hats (what, no helmets or intercom headsets?)...
Opening chapter of book deals with cattle mutilations!.......2000-04-23
For those who want to know more about the relevance of cattle mutilations related to "secret government" machinations, you should appreciate that Jim Keith sought to reveal that by opening this book with discussions of journalist ED SANDERS, who has very importantly covered cattle mutilations in the context of secret government ops likely involving development of biologicals, and that many cattle mutilations were diagnosed by veterinarians as having LOCALIZEED CONCENTRATIONS of CLOSTRIDIA.
Keith opens this important work by having the reader seek to know more! You will discover Keith's incredible ability to ferret out the dark side of the Globalists....and how some of Keith's books reveal much more about secret "underground" biologicals developments for the "NEW ORDER". This book has the opening chapter dealing with cattle mutilations, so that should tell you something about what Keith has uncovered! CLOSTRIDIA, per DOD-docs presented by RN Joyce Riley reveal that Keith is on the right track! Jim Keith was quite nervous in revealing on the ART BELL show that CLOSTRIDIA was related to strange cattle mutilations, despite all the rest of the "entertainment" regarding that topic....and this book will provoke you to research more about WACO, et al!
'New Order ', Malthusianism Protocols, & Cattle Mutilations?.......2000-01-17
To those of you unfamiliar with Jim Keith's books, you will appreciate Keith's incredible facility to see beyond the fact-ridden, and extrapolate hidden agendas within government enterprises, as in this book, you will note that he opens with review of jounralist Ed Sander's insights into the meaning of CATTLE MUTILATIONS within the context of first appearing very close to military base in Colorado, and why Keith dared to mention on his guest appearance on ART BELL talk-show the relevance of many cattle mutilations having been diagnosed with CLOSTRIDIA, and what that microbe means for BIOLOGICALS productions, as noted by famed journalist, RN Joyce Riley of American Gulf War Veteran's Association... and why this news is being suppressed, and why JIM KEITH's books have so much merit in understanding GLOBALISM and all sorts of "hidden agendas". Read ALL of Jim Keith's books, before you think this is all madness and sheer nonsense! JIM KEITH has lots more to say about the "New Order" and the devious machinations ensuing from very greedy people. Keith has tried to expose the nefarious nature of many psy-ops--READ ON!

Book Description
On April 14, 1994, two U.S. Air Force F-15 fighters accidentally shot down two U.S. Army Black Hawk Helicopters over Northern Iraq, killing all twenty-six peacekeepers onboard. In response to this disaster the complete array of military and civilian investigative and judicial procedures ran their course. After almost two years of investigation with virtually unlimited resources, no culprit emerged, no bad guy showed himself, no smoking gun was found. This book attempts to make sense of this tragedy--a tragedy that on its surface makes no sense at all.
With almost twenty years in uniform and a Ph.D. in organizational behavior, Lieutenant Colonel Snook writes from a unique perspective. A victim of friendly fire himself, he develops individual, group, organizational, and cross-level accounts of the accident and applies a rigorous analysis based on behavioral science theory to account for critical links in the causal chain of events. By explaining separate pieces of the puzzle, and analyzing each at a different level, the author removes much of the mystery surrounding the shootdown. Based on a grounded theory analysis, Snook offers a dynamic, cross-level mechanism he calls "practical drift"--the slow, steady uncoupling of practice from written procedure--to complete his explanation.
His conclusion is disturbing. This accident happened because, or perhaps in spite of everyone behaving just the way we would expect them to behave, just the way theory would predict. The shootdown was a normal accident in a highly reliable organization.
Customer Reviews:
Utterly fascinating.......2002-11-29
I went into this book thinking "how in the world could this happen" and finished it asking "how is it that this didn't occur before."
A fascinating book that has significance for all types of emergency responders, who need to understand how such "mistakes" might occur and thus how to potentially prevent such mistakes from occuring in the future.
An Organizational Analysis.......2000-12-14
Friendly Fire is a insightful, intriguing analysis of the 1994 incident that resulted in the needless deaths of 26 peacekeepers in the Iraqi Norther No Fly Zone. Snook presents a compelling tale of a complex system gone awry, an organization operating on the edge of chaos, and the ultimate result of a deterministic system spinning out of control. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of systems theory and organizational behavior, LTC Snook presents his thesis with exceptional clarity and depth of understanding; his conclusions are as disturbing as they are fascinating: a series of rational decisions made by equally rational human beings still failed to prevent the very incident the organization was designed to forestall. A concise, well-written account of and incident with lessons that we should all take to heart.
An Exceptional Account and Evaluation.......2000-09-30
Friendly Fire is a marvelous analysis of one of the most horrific accidents in recent military history. Snook is unfaltering in his tenacity to get to the root causes of this tragedy. The reader is given a broad perspective of how events, even those occuring years previous, led to the fateful day when 26 peacekeepers lost their lives. His ability to put the reader into the mind of each participant is riveting. More than just a recitation of facts or an outpouring of emotion, this book blends all the elements into a comprehensive understanding of a most complicated event. Friendly Fire should be required reading for all military personnel and anyone whose actions hold the lives of others in their hands.
When bad things happen to good organizations.......2000-04-13
In this book, Scott A. Snook, Ph.D. provides a thoughtful and readable account of how things can go tragically wrong in normal, healthy organizations. The author creatively applies several key theories in organizational structure and change to develop an understanding of (1) the tragic shootdown of two Army helicopters by U.S. Air Force jet fighters, which occurred in northern Iraq in 1994, and (2) "friendly-fire" events in general and broadly-defined --- or how it is that bad things can happen to good organizations, and there really is no one to blame. The book begins with an impressive, detailed examination of the data surrounding the 1994 Blackhawk shootdown. This includes thousands of hours of transcribed testimony gathered in hearings and court martial proceedings. In addition to official reports, Snook personally interviewed many of the key players in the Blackhawk friendly-fire incident. Using a "grounded-theory" approach, the author allows the data to shape and guide his reconstruction of the event itself, and his subsequent theoretical formulations to explain what happened. His resultant theory of "practical drift" spans multiple levels-of-analysis, from the individual to the cultural, providing dramatic insight into how such seemingly impossible events can be expected to occur in complex organizations. This book sheds the kind of light which both clarifies and disturbs. It should prove of real value not only to military leaders interested in reducing friendly-fire incidents, but also to leaders in non-military organizations who wish to understand, and perhaps avoid, normal disasters.

Book Description
A typical plant control system will be subject to the undesirable influence of exogenous commands and disturbances. In order to track and reject these Professor Isidori and his co-authors have designed a feedback control system based on embedding a model of these disturbances within the controller itself - the so-called "internal model".
Beginning with a review of the fundamental principles of internal-model-based feedback control design,
Robust Autonomous Guidance moves on to expound recent enhancements to such designs and then to their implementation in systems operating under conditions of great uncertainty.
The three case studies presented: attitude control of a low-Earth-orbit satellite and the landing of fixed- and rotary-winged aircraft on a ship involve control systems coping with a high degree of nonlinear behaviour. The key issues addressed in each case study are the design of an adaptive internal model for the specific tracking task and of stabilizing control capable of steering the tracking error to zero while keeping all internal states bounded for any arbitrarily large but bounded envelope of initial data and uncertain parameters. Nested saturated controls form the basis of novel tools for asymptotic analysis and design.
Robust Autonomous Guidance will be of great interest to academic and industrial researchers working with nonlinear control systems and to engineers involved in the design of aerospatial guidance systems. It will also be a useful reference for graduate students working with non-linear systems.
