Guide to Charleston.......2007-08-01
I used one of Frommer's guides to Savannah and had a fabulous trip there. The same maps and reviews of hotels, restaurants, and sights to see are included in this guide. It also includes a bit of history and some travel tips. Great guides to make first time visits fun. I may buy one of local cities to see what might be interesting to see. Highly advised.
Good to carry around with you.......2007-05-12
This small book fits easily into your purse so you can carry it around with you. Better information can be obtained for free from SC tourism web sites.
Frommer's Portable Charleston (Frommer's Portable).......2007-02-04
Very good. Down to 4 stars because the info becomes dated very quickly. Look for newest edition.
You need this for a first trip to Charleston........2005-10-13
I just returned from Charleston and used this book. It was a joy to use. Best little travel guide I've seen. It covers the major information for planning a trip and then it becomes a highly portable reference book while there. Highly recommend this book and "The Best Little Map Of Charleston". You need little else
I was able to make the most of my time.......2003-08-21
I found everything I was looking for and more in this small, easy-to carry guide. Not only did I find exact prices for hotels and restaurants, I also learned about low country cooking, the architecture in Charleston, and a brief history. All of this was in this little guide that I could fit in my purse!

Very Little Useful Information.......2007-06-30
I know this a "portable guide" to the Dominican Republic, but still it is extremely bare bones and basic. It includes a decent section on Santo Domingo but absolutely nothing on Santiago - the country's second largest city. The rest of this thin volume includes only a couple of short sections on the DR's tourist areas - the North Coast, Punta Cana and Boca Chica. To someone attempting to explore anywhere else in the DR this book is virtually useless. Even for my brief one week trip to Puerto Plata I found nothing in this guide that I had already discovered on the Internet.
I am usually a fan of Frommer's guidebooks. But this one just doesn't cut it.
Basically basic overview of the DR.......2005-09-20
This booklet has all the basic travel facts for the Dominican Republic. That's --well-- basically it. Its main advantages are succinctness and portability; not information on the DR.
Good guide, but ..........2004-03-13
The Frommer's Dominican Republic guide is a good guide for anyone making a quick trip to the DR. The book does overexaggerates on the crime issue. Crime in the DR is relatively low, maybe even lower than in the USA. Other than that, the book is excellent.

ANOTHER CLUNKER FROM THIS SERIES...........2006-12-16
Since these Portable Guides were published in late 2006, one might believe that the information contained herein is timely, reliable, and cutting edge. Regrettably, one would be wrong on all counts. This Frommer series is one of the worst ever, and the Paris edition may have the distinction of being the prototype for how NOT to write a travel guide. Much of the information provided is simply incorrect. And while all travel guides (including this one) have disclaimers about the mercurial changes that are part and parcel of international travel, some of the information provided has been out of date or just plain wrong for over two years. Discredit goes not only to the authors but also to the editors for allowing such slovenly research.
The hotels chosen for inclusion in each Arrondissement are baffling. Hotels of great acclaim and historical significance are omitted entirely, while hotels, such as the Hotel de 7e Art, where "rooms are cramped and outfitted with the simplest of furniture" are given play.
Restaurant choices are equally eccentric, given that Parisian cooking is world-renowned. Even if the intent was to provide dining experiences that were "out of the mainstream", the dishes selected for recommendation, particularly in some of the smaller bistros, are the worst possible menu choices. Did anyone actually EAT this food?
It may well be impossible to adequately provide meaningful coverage of a city the size and diversity of Paris in a scant 177 pages. But this guide lacks any consistent perspective and, after reading it three times now, it is still unclear to me for whom this book was intended.
Buying this guide will completely confuse a first time visitor and thoroughly frustrate a frequent visitor. That being the case, why bother?

Customer Reviews:
Great Compact Guide.......2007-09-24
If you're looking for a compact general guide to London this is a good bet. While it's not pocket sized it can easily fit in a purse or jacket pocket. The book gives a good guide to the neighborhoods and I felt oriented after reading it. The "Where to Stay" and "Where to Dine" sections are quite abbreviated, so you might want to buy an additional guide just on Accommodations or Food (I recommend "Cheap Eats"). The "Exploring London" section easily gives enough information for a couple week trip, detailed but concise. It also gives "insider tips" on many of the most popular sites. There are also sections on Nightlife (including Theater) and Shopping (especially helpful).
Overall, highly recommended!
COULD IT BE... THE WORST GUIDE BOOK EVER?.......2006-12-16
Actually, that distinction would probably go to a guide book I read as a teen that stated that Windsor Castle was in walking distance from Buckingham Palace (heads up: it's NOT!). Still, this volume, with its clunky editing, moribund writing style, and questionable recommendations should easily win Worst of Show for 2007.
What in the world has happened to Frommer's, the usually reliable arbiter of travel, which in past years has written series after series of well-researced guides on which travelers routinely depended? The recently released 2007 Portable Guide series is truly awful in virtually every area that matters in a guide book- style, information, and reliability of recommendations.
The London volume, however, may be the worst of the lot. One wonders how the hotels and restaurants were selected for inclusion. Missing are hotels of renown, hotels of character, hotels of historical significance, hotels of charm, and hotels of interest. Those chosen for mention are a hodge podge which truly redefine "electic". When luck guides the author to a hotel which might kindle a spark of genuine interest, the slice 'em, dice 'em prose which summarizes the property gives the reader little on which to base an informed decision.
If the hotel recommendations are eccentric, the restaurant recommendations are maddening. This volume will have the traveler walk past two restaurants of genuine acclaim or just great food to reach the one eatery included, which has neither. Odd to baffling!
This guide also has a great many facts that will fascinate travelers to London. For instance, were you aware that the currency in London is the Pound Sterling? Yes, it's true. And how about that the major airports are Heathrow and Gatwick? Yes, indeedy! Here's one that will stop the presses: The Queen frequently resides in Buckingham Palace. Why, that's almost as good as having Her Majesty's private mobile number, isn't it?
This writer apologizes for the condescending tone of this review, but after trying so hard to find a way to tell Frommer that its baby isn't ugly, and finding none, we can only share with the prospective buyer of this volume one final thought: Whether in Dollars or Pounds Sterling, purchasing this tiny volume will be as egregious a waste of money as is possible on Amazon.com.

This book is very good especially if you haven't read very much about Darwin and are not familiar with his works. The selections are good representations of his overall work and the editor's notes are helpful. An index would be nice.

Customer Reviews:
Close to useless on many fronts.......2004-03-28
Not terrible, but don't rely on it for finding anything special.
Taking a cruise to San Juan? Fine book. You will get off the boat, go to some reasonable shops, eat a good (but not cheap) meal, and do fine.
Interested in a fun week outside of San Juan? Not so great. Did a fine job (although far from complete) on where to stay. Especially Paradors (gov't run hotels) were a great contribution from the book.
Looking for a place to snorkel? Or for a special beach? The treasure-hunt attitude of the book ("nearby, you will find super beach with incredible snorkeling") is useless. How about some directions and physical location? "Nearby" seems to encompass everything from driving down unmarked roads to hiking trash strewn trails where you sincerely hope the end of the trail is a great beach, and not a mugging. Maps were also incredibly inaccurate.
Useless.......2004-03-02
The respected Frommer really falls to the bottom of the pile after this book. We took our first visit to Puerto Rico last month and we looking for what the reviews promised. Well, unless you want information about San Juan and Old San Juan, forget about it. There was NO info about our resort - The Copamarina - which, we've learned is in another of Frommer's books as a recommended spot. We were staying in the southern portion of the island and there's little info in the book for that area. We were particularly interested in purchasing the masks worn at Carnivale...the shops recommended in the book no longer exist. The Fox-Delicias Mall in Ponce is completely closed and empty for renovation.
Everything you need to know in 210 pages........2003-08-15
This pocket-sized guide was the only thing I needed to carry on my trip to Puerto Rico. With tips on the best beaches, wild life attraction, and restaurants, we were able to get the true authentic experience. Prices were exact and current, ratings and highlights were easy to find, and the cost was low. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to get the most of their vacation without a big, heavy book.
