This book is very impressive in scope, and (as other reviewers have said) IS indispensable for any Drosophila laboratory. It is a very valuable addition to every Drosophila laboratory. The book covers virtually every area of Drosophila work. Many of the topics discussed are cutting edge, such as the chapter on RNA interference, targeted cell ablation, and biochemical preparations from Drosophila (such as soluble nuclear extracts and membrane proteins). Overall I am very pleased with the book, and glad I bought it! One section of the book I find particularly useful is the beginners guide to the Drosophila genome project. This section overviews the information available from the recently completed Drosophila genome project. It tell us what kinds of information are available about the fly genome, how this information was collected, and where we can download it from the internet (complete with internet web site addresses)!
My only criticism of the book is a criticism which applies to ALL manuals published by the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press: the protocols are too superficial, and not dealt with in sufficient detail to allow a novice to carry out these techniques (which is what a manual ideally SHOULD do). This has been true of all the CSHLP manuals I have seen. Conspicuously absent from the CSHL publications is a TROUBLESHOOTING section, which can be referred to if the researcher runs into problems. As we all know, there are many small (and seemingly trivial) details to any protocol which, if not carried out properly, can make or break an experiment. Some steps in a protocol are always more fastidious than others, and it is critical for us to know which steps can be done with a bucket and which steps require an eyedropper.
For my money, the best and most comprehensive manual is the CURRENT PROTOCOLS IN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY manual (Wiley and Sons), which is updated regularly, and has extensive troubleshooting sections attached to each protocol. (They have recently come out with a companion manual dealing exclusively with protein techniques.) Also, I highly recommend the METHODS IN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY series (Humana Press) for its concise protocols and supplementary troubleshooting sections. If the researcher is familiar with the techniques the troubleshooting sections need not be consulted, but if the researcher is a novice the troubleshooting sections are invaluable. Unfortunately a Drosophila manual is not available from either of these publishers, but this CSHL manual makes a good substitute. I recommend this book for all Drosophilists!

A must have for any Drosophila lab.......2000-04-20
This latest edition by Sullivan et al. is the best protocols manual for Drosophila that I've seen. It should be a staple for any fly lab. It provides the most up-to-date protocols for common techniques (ie staining, dissections, cytology) as well as more recent additions (i.e. DNA microarrays, neuroactive drugs, GFP reporters). Moreover, the protocols are clear, detailed, and easy to follow.

Good book, but biased in favour of genetics:.......2000-01-18
This is a very good book, and contains useful protocols. For those of us who remember the first edition, it was heavily biased in favour of genetics. So is the second edition, in spite of the fact that Drosophila is being used more and more for studies in cytology, physiology and biochemistry. Nevertheless, this book is indispensible for those interested in doing classical genetics with Drosophila. It explains how to maintain flies, how to do basic crosses and ballance chromosomes, and how to do P-element induced mutations. There is also a section of how to extract and manipulate nucleic acids from flies, and a very brief (but interesting section) on fly BEHAVIOR and genetic studies of fly behavior. I found this interesting since many researchers have been turning to Drosophila as a model organism in learning and behavior (including addiction and substance abuse) studies in recent years. Several things are noticably lacking from this book however. A section on polytene chromosomes is conspicuously absent, in spite of the fact that this is one of the main tools of Drosophilists. The inclusion of several sections on fly cytology would definitely have been useful, such as PISH (polytene in situ hybridization), and other methods for locating gene products in fly cells. A section on microinjection and transformation of fly embryos would have been useful too. The basic theoretical information is there, but the technique is not dealt with specifically, and no protocols are given. The P-element enhancer trap system is dealt with briefly, but could have been expanded more. For those interested in the fruitfly as a model organism in cytology and molecular biology I would recommend 'Drosophila melanogaster: Practical Uses in Cell and Molecular Biology,' from the 'Methods in Cell Biology' series (Volume 44). This is a good book although it too could use more detailed protocols. Unfortunately this book is out of print, so it is hard to comeby! Alternatively, the 'Cold Spring Harbour Press' is due to come out with 'Drosophila Protocols' in the Spring of 2000. I have seen the putative table of contents, and it looks like this may be a very comprehensive book, and I'll make sure to have a look at it as soon as it is published. Greg Doheny (Vancouver B.C.)

The Connection Between DNA and The Animal.......2006-06-20
For the uninitiated such as I, it has been entirely mysterious how a strand of DNA manages to express itself as a finished animal. Indeed, I really do believe evolution works, and that the information that describes an individual animal is passed on through the coding of DNA. But it has been uncomfortable accepting this principle on faith because authorities in the field say so. Here is a book that describes the process and explains how scientists detect and measure the mechanism. To all my fellow skeptics, I highly recommend this book.
What knock-outs can tell you.......2005-11-04
This is a wonderful summary of that which we have learned from genetic knock-out and knock-in technology. There is a systemic evaluation of even the earliest cell divisions and the results are clear: knock-out or knock-in a gene, and the patterns change. Even axial organization of the egg can be influenced by knocking out a gene.
The focus is entirely on making sense of the drosophila with knock-out and knock-in experiments . Fundamental research into initiating metabolic activity, surface chemistry and protein assembly is not addressed.
bristling with insight.......2002-02-20
What a great book! Lawrence has managed to take the long history and complex details of genetic studies on drosophila development, and synthesize it all into an accessible summary that anyone can understand. This is by far the most concise and straightforward summary of fly development, and should be considered a must-read for anyone who cares about developmental biology. OK, full-time fly people will probably find it mostly too basic, but for the rest of us it's just right. Sidebars on the different techniques provide useful details for those who care without interrupting the flow of the prose. Defiantely recommended. Plus, the cover picture is really cool.
Self-builder.......2000-11-27
The general reader interested in not only how a single fly egg cell develops into a complex, formed fly, but how genetic and molecular biological experiments are used to determine such mechanisms, will find this book useful. The maternal systems that establish positional information in the egg cell, followed by the development of parasegments, and followed by expression of groups of cells, are described. It is shown that a large amount of genetic information is required to simply organize the embryo, besides building it. Many of the genes discussed have homologues in other higher animals such as vertebrates.
Good Book for research.......2000-03-25
I read this book when I was doing a project on drosophila menogaster, and this book really helped. There were some things that were hard to understand, but for the most part it was imformative and concise.

This book examines the genetic circuitry of the well-known "fruit fly," tackling questions of cell assemblage and pattern formation, of the hows and the whys behind the development of the fly. After an initial examination of the proximity versus pedigree imperatives, the volume delves into bristle pattern formation and disc development, with entire chapters devoted to the leg, wing, and eye. Extensive appendices include a glossary of protein domains, catalogs of well-studied genes, and an outline of signaling pathways. More than 30 wiring diagrams among over 60 detailed schematics clarify the text.
