An excellent ecological field book.......2000-06-19
This guide has many techniques ideal for sampling many (and possibly any) habitat type. The guide includes field sheets for easy data entry, equations to obtain key ecological standards, plus a detailed description of the many techniques with cited references. Simply a handy tool and a "must have" when working in a field of so many different sampling techniques for different habitats.

Book Description
Information regarding population status and abundance of rare species plays a key role in resource management decisions. Ideally, data should be collected using statistically sound sampling methods, but by their very nature, rare or elusive species pose a difficult sampling challenge.
Sampling Rare or Elusive Species describes the latest sampling designs and survey methods for reliably estimating occupancy, abundance, and other population parameters of rare, elusive, or otherwise hard-to-detect plants and animals. It offers a mixture of theory and application, with actual examples from terrestrial, aquatic, and marine habitats around the world.
Sampling Rare or Elusive Species is the first volume devoted entirely to this topic and provides natural resource professionals with a suite of innovative approaches to gathering population status and trend data. It represents an invaluable reference for natural resource professionals around the world, including fish and wildlife biologists, ecologists, biometricians, natural resource managers, and all others whose work or research involves rare or elusive species.
Customer Reviews:
Very useful and illustrative!.......2007-01-19
I usually work with very elusive animals like wild big cats, that's why I consider this book very useful and ilustrative if you are planning to work with rare species; in special the experimental desing section. Also the cited bibliography is a great tool to expand knowledge in this subjet. I really recomend it!!

Book Description
Because of their photosynthetic activity, plants represent the most important form of life on earth, and thus provide a rich and important source for investigation. By studying the levels of elements such as lead, cadmium and mercury in plants, vital information on background concentrations of such elements in the environments can be obtained. The growth in the use of instrumental multi-element techniques, such as neutron activation, X-ray fluorescence and atomic emission spectroscopy in the analysis of plant samples has led to significant advances in our ability to determine accurately the quantities of such elements present in plant samples. Instrumental Element and Multi-Element Analysis of Plant Samples: Methods and Applications presents the latest key advances that have taken place in a wide range of instrumentation, such as improvements in detection limits, reproducibility and accuracy. Potential problem areas such as representative sampling, sampling processes and accuracy are discussed in detail. Although concentrating on the analysis of plant samples, the book also considers general issues associated with multi-element analysis of environmental analysis in general. Instrumental Element and Multi-Element Analysis of Plant Samples: Methods and Applications will be of great interest to all those working in environmental analysis, particularly in the area of plant sample analysis. Its highly practical and inter-disciplinary approach will make it indispensable to chemists, biochemists, biologists and geologists interested in these areas.

Book Description
The first hands-on guide to XRD and XRF sampling and specimen preparation
Systematic errors from poor sampling and improper specimen preparation can easily render X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) data of questionable use for analysis. But, until now, the practical information that can help to reduce these errors has never been readily available in one volume.
This book fills a vital gap in the literature, bringing together a wealth of material previously available only in workbooks, company manuals, and other inside sources. It provides detailed coverage of the major tasks involved in X-ray analysis - complete with theory, step-by-step methods, equipment suggestions, and problem-solving tips.
With a full complement of tools and techniques, this comprehensive guide helps both beginners and experienced analysts to make the best decision on sample treatment and get accurate XRD and XRF results-saving valuable time, money, and effort.
Covers X-ray techniques for analyzing biological, geological, metallic, ceramic, and other materials
* Addresses all aspects of specimen preparation, including handling unusual or very small samples, liquids and solutions, and more
* Features special chapters on specimen preparation equipment and XRF standards
* Contains useful bibliography and helpful references.

Book Description
The first overview of sampling for archaeologists for over twenty years, this manual offers a comprehensive account of the application of statistical sampling theory that is essential to modern archaeological practice, at a range of scales, from the regional to the microscopic. It includes a discussion of the relevance of sampling theory to archaeological interpretation, and considers its fundamental place in fieldwork and post excavation study. It demonstrates the vast range of techniques that are available, only some of which are widely used by archaeologists. A section on statistical theory also reviews the latest developments in the field, and the presentation is clear and user friendly. The formal mathematics is available in an appendix, which is cross-referenced with the main text.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely essential.......2002-10-09
No archaeologist should be without this book, which describes in simple, sensible language just exactly what is involved in the proper sampling of archaeological populations. Sampling design and sample size receive excellent treatment, and the book describes the very useful adaptive sampling, a method with which few archaeologists are very familiar, in some detail. Paleoethnobotanists/archaeobotanists will do well to pay attention to his discussion of "ratios of ratios" to account for differential preservation.

Book Description
Clearly demonstrates a wide range of sampling methods now in use by governments, in business, market and operations research, social science, medicine, public health, agriculture, and accounting. Gives proofs of all the theoretical results used in modern sampling practice. New topics in this edition include the approximate methods developed for the problem of attaching standard errors or confidence limits to nonlinear estimates made from the results of surveys with complex plans.
Customer Reviews:
A classic and the bible of sampling techiques.......1999-07-02
As a marine ecologist and a person with a non-statistical background this book was hard going but is worth the effort 10 times over. I have been using this book for more than 10 years now and finally decided to buy a copy for myself. I would recommend this book to anyone that has to design sampling programs for field surveys in ecology. Beware however - it is not for the faint hearted or those who do not have a bent towards statistics or numerical analyses.

Book Description
This book is a guide to the development of an effective field sampling program as well as to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and technical information for many of the most effective remedial investigation methods. The book focuses on intrusive investigation techniques, but non-intrusive techniques such as aerial photography, surface geophysics, and surface radiological surveying are also addressed. SOPs have been provided for those sampling techniques that do not require specialized academic training, such as soil, sediment, surface water, groundwater, and drum sampling. For more specialized investigative techniques, such as underground drainage surveying and some types of soil-gas surveying, information is provided to help you understand how the technique works and under what conditions it can be used most effectively. The book also addresses: equipment decontamination; sample preparation, documentation, and shipment; health and safety; and management of investigation-derived waste. Emphasis is placed on those methods and procedures that have both proved themselves to be effective and are acknowledged by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as reputable techniques.
