Book Description

In 1991, when her daughter’s rare, hand-carved harp was stolen, Lisby Mayer’s familiar world of science and rational thinking turned upside down. After the police failed to turn up any leads, a friend suggested she call a dowser–a man who specialized in finding lost objects. With nothing to lose–and almost as a joke–Dr. Mayer agreed. Within two days, and without leaving his Arkansas home, the dowser located the exact California street coordinates where the harp was found.

Deeply shaken, yet driven to understand what had happened, Mayer began the fourteen-year journey of discovery that she recounts in this mind-opening, brilliantly readable book. Her first surprise: the dozens of colleagues who’d been keeping similar experiences secret for years, fearful of being labeled credulous or crazy.

Extraordinary Knowing is an attempt to break through the silence imposed by fear and to explore what science has to say about these and countless other “inexplicable” phenomena. From Sigmund Freud’s writings on telepathy to secret CIA experiments on remote viewing, from leading-edge neuroscience to the strange world of quantum physics, Dr. Mayer reveals a wealth of credible and fascinating research into the realm where the mind seems to trump the laws of nature.

She does not ask us to believe. Rather she brings us a book of profound intrigue and optimism, with far-reaching implications not just for scientific inquiry but also for the ways we go about living in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Knowing.......2007-09-25

Finally, a book that reviews the scientific evidence for the existence of extra-ordinary events. It is disturbing to see how scientists, under the guise of skepticism, have refused to look at well-designed studies that, unfortunately for them, challenge their perception of the world AS THEY WOULD LIKE IT TO BE. Skepticism is certainly healthy, but prejudice is not. To decide beforehand that events that appear to not quite follow natural laws are totally unworthy of study is simply not good science. In this book Elizabeth Lloyd Mayer points us to the many high-quality studies (and scientists) that have been simply ignored by mainstream science. Reading this book should certainly open your eyes to the variety of human experience that modern science both rejects and neglects.

4 out of 5 stars I knew you would read this book ; ).......2007-06-07

Mayer takes on a taboo subject - often ridiculed by the religious AND the scientific communities but for different reasons. The scientists -because it is difficult to explain how esp works. The religious -because if humans were to develop their esp abilities -then we would all be prophets.
This book is filled with interesting anecdotes, experiments, ideas, and people who figure prominently in the field of esp practice and esp research. If you are interested in the topics of psychic healing, subliminal messages, meditation, premonition, intuition, dreams, remote viewing, dowsing, and why Sigmund Freud was not fond of music (and more!)- this is the book for you. Read with an open mind. There is a notes section and an index.

5 out of 5 stars Moves discussion into the new millenium.......2007-05-14

This book is courageous in its sharing of the author's personal journey toward a greater understanding of our complete and yet mysterious humanity, backed up by scrupulous clinical and research data. She takes the idea that we are more than we can ever really know about ourselves consciously out of the age of gullible new age mysticism, and puts it in the middle of thinking people's daily contemplation, challenging everyone from the church to psychologists, to even physicists to take on her incredible yet undeniable assertions about the unlmited frontier of human consciousness which she leads us to. The author died right after completing this book, yet this book has an important and exciting message for humanity that needs to be carried forward without her. It is the perfect antidote to all the fervent God-haters of late, injecting awe, humility and intelligence into the discussion of where we have been, and where we are going--to a place where God and science meet.

3 out of 5 stars where the beef?.......2007-05-13

The author makes good use of describing multiple studies that support some amazing mental powers that the human mind appears to be capable of performing. Unfortunately, none of the studies are sufficiently referenced to allow an interested reader to review the actual data. A more detailed account of the experimental set up, control group, number of participants, etc. along with the actual data would have allowed a skeptical reader to assess the validity independently, rather than accepting the "highly statistically significant" conclusion the author presents. Extraordinary claims do require extraordinary evidence. While I believe the evidence may be there, the author does not make the "ordinary" effort to share this important information with her readers. Even an appendix with more detail would have been useful. I was left wanting for more than just an appetizer, how about some real beef!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent .......2007-05-09

Lisby Mayer lived long enough to complete the manuscript for this excellent story of how an extraordinary event changed her life. Must reading.

This book was a bit disappointing. As I thought it would go more into detailing the animal world. Instead it has a lot of pictures with small captions on each page. Good for young adults.

One of the best Sylvia Brown books I've read. A child would enjoy the contents. Sylvia and her son have done a wonderful job of allowing us a look into the souls of these beautiful animals. I am truly blessed to have had the opportunity to share this experience with them. I highly recommend this book to any animal lover.

2 out of 5 stars Spirit of Animals.......2007-09-09

I did like the book but it was mostly photos of cute animals and not much more . It should be marketed as a childrens book. Not much substance for a reader who is looking for information on animals souls.

I enjoy reading Sylvia Browne's books and this one also proved to be interesting to me. It shed's light on animal's interaction with us.

1 out of 5 stars Are you kidding me?.......2007-10-07

I can buy "don't sweat the small stuff," but when the author adds "it's all small stuff" he just lost all credibility. It's ALL small stuff? Tell that to a family whose loved one was just murdered. Or a parent who has to raise three severly deformed babies. That's the problem with self-help books of this genre, everything is penned into a nicely managed coral that totally ignores the REAL pains of life. If you want inspirational truth, check out the Bible where even Jesus, who never pulled any punches, tells us "life is difficult."

5 out of 5 stars don,t sweat the small stuff its all small stuff.......2007-10-03

This book should be mandatory in high schools. It would help kids understand in simple ways how to response to emotional and spiritual and body. Very positive book for living the fast pace we live in today..I urge parents to get don,t sweat the small for teens..

5 out of 5 stars Putting life into its proper perspective.......2007-08-08

It has been my experience that life has a tendency to give us what we need (at the most unexpected times) when dealing and coping with problems in our lives. The other afternoon, for example, in my disorganized garage, was searching frantically for an old receipt for tax purposes. Now it really wasn't worth much, nevertheless, to me this tiny problem was all pressing and all stressing. In the scheme of things, it wasn't worth the energy. What I did find in one of the old boxes, though, was this terrific little book. Sitting down on a box amongst the dust, I read it for at least an hour and within that short span of time, it truly changed my perspective on what is really important to gain a more loving and stress-free existence.

Interestingly as a child my father's favourite saying was, "Don't sweat the details:" Meaning don't let little things get in the way of what is important. Richard Carlson's message is basically the same. In this treasure of a book, he has written 100 suggestions on how to deal with life's "small stuff", such as developing our patience, compassion, and our tendencies to criticise and make knee-jerk judgements; essentially developing our potential to become more caring and loving human beings.

My personal favourites:

Make Peace with Imperfection

Develop your compassion

Don't interrupt Others or Finish Their Sentences

Become a Better Listener

Become an Early Riser

Stop Blaming Others

Practice Random Acts of Kindness

There are 93 other suggestions in this book that if practiced could well change one's life for the better. But like all things truly valuable, it takes work, practice and discipline to achieve anything worthwhile on this planet.

I've decided to choose one suggestion a day and make a conscious effort to practice it; because I believe if followed will change life's vagaries and problems, at least putting them into a proper perspective.

Highly Recommended.

Book Description

David R. Hawkins details how anyone may resolve the most crucial of all human dilemmas: how to instantly determine the truth or falsehood of any statement or supposed fact. Dr. Hawkins, who worked as a "healing psychiatrist" during his long and distinguished career, uses theoretical concepts from particle physics, nonlinear dynamics, and chaos theory to support his study of human behavior. This is a fascinating work that will intrigue readers from all walks of life!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A valuable tool in the area of personal growth .......2007-10-14

Hawkins' discussion of kinesiology testing is very comprehensive, and can serve as a valuable tool in the area of personal growth. My wife and I use this methodology on a regular basis to assist us in making decisions in our lives. It is not something we rely on 100 percent to actually make the decision, but we do indeed consider it to be an important tool to apply in the decision-making process.

4 out of 5 stars A useful perspective.......2007-10-13

Other than the fact that this book could have been edited a bit, it provides an easy to read and understand formulation of one of the basic factors in the human psyche. Like another favorite of mine "Learned Optimism" this book provides insight not normally found in todays pop-psycholgy or self-improvement books.

Authors like Wayne Dyer ask readers to "trust" what is presented as true, try it out and see what happens. Dr. Hawkins on the other hand uses a fairly reliable methodology that is simple enough anyone can use it, kinesiology. You don't have to be a trained psychologist to try kinesiology testing in it's simplest applications. Test this with a friend or spouse, have them put out their arm and think to themselves "I am strong and deserving" then try to push down their arm at the wrist. Then have them say to themselves "I am weak and undeserving" then push on the arm again. You can do this test over and over with the same results. What we think DOES effect us physically. But this book takes this idea much farther into many aspects of our lives from the food we eat to the politicians we elect.

5 out of 5 stars Great food for thought.......2007-10-03

Actually I would give this 4 1/2 stars because this book is written so assertively it may be a turn-off for those who would be receptive to exploring its ideas.

Think of "Power Vs. Force" as an intellectual version of "The Secret," in that it includes scientific discussion and heavy-hitting authorities to posit similar ideas.

No matter what your opinion, this book deserves great credit for putting some extremely interesting ideas out there for discussion and debate. The cover of the book looks like you would have to be an Ivy-League professor to crack it open, but this book would actually be a great book club selection because it would open the door for a fantastic discussion.

A fun and interesting book to read, even if you don't agree. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly important read..........2007-09-15

This book is wonderful. It's a must read for anyone in the alternative healing arts. I'm a physicist and this book answers so many of the skeptics arguements about our connection to the universe and does so in a very grounded way. Should be required reading for all thinking persons...

5 out of 5 stars Powerful! (Not forceful!).......2007-08-29

I'll be honest with you. Some of the finer points in this book are over my head. But I do understand that when we come from a place of love, joy, peace, and acceptance, we have much power to manifest our desires than we do when we come from a place of fear, greed, pride, etc. In fact, the way I see it, love (and its associated states of being) are our only TRUE power -- a power that can manifest miracles -- and everything else we experience in life is just a matter of "force," and the consequences of force. I was first introduced to this idea in a book called Row, Row, Row Your Boat: A Guide For Living Life In The Divine Flow. Power vs. Force really expands on this idea, though, and I think it's an important book for all to read.

After years of spiritual study and reflection, inspirational speaker and bestselling author Wayne Dyer has emerged a highly esteemed teacher. His current message about tapping into the power of intention may sound like good old positive thinking: just stay focused on what you want, rather than focusing on the lack of having what you want. But the teaching here goes deeper than just controlling thoughts (although he does acknowledge that thought control is a surprisingly challenging and significant endeavor). This book might help readers land a better job, but it's more relevant for those who are ready to detach from an ego-driven life filled with quick fixes of happiness and step into a more authentic, joyful, and spiritually fulfilling life. His core teachings speak to tapping into a universal source of energy that can also be called the "power of intention." He calls people who are consciously co-creating with this energy source "connectors" and describes them as "individuals who have made themselves available for success...They don't say With my luck things won't work out. Instead, you're more likely to hear something like, I intend to create this and I know it will work out." Connectors are also committed to Dyer's "seven faces of intention"--creativity, kindness, love, beauty, expansion, abundance and receptivity, which he speaks to throughout the book. Each chapter concludes with five suggestions for becoming stronger connectors, such as how to monitor one's inner speech or shift out of low-energy beliefs. Some criticize Dyer for not giving credit to other teachers who offer this same message, especially Jerry and Esther Hicks (A New Beginning I) and even Ralph Waldo Emerson. It's impossible to know whether this was a deliberate omission, but it is obvious that Dyer has tapped into a growing conversation about co-creating with "source." Other leading-edge voices in this conversation include Eckhart Tolle (The Power of Now), Shakti Gawain (Creative Visualization ) and Lynn Grabhorn (Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting). --Gail Hudson

Book Description

Intention is generally viewed as a pit-bull kind of determination propelling one to succeed at all costs by never giving up on an inner picture. In this view, an attitude that combines hard work with an indefatigable drive toward excellence is the way to succeed. However, intention is viewed very differently in this book. Dr. Wayne W. Dyer has researched intention as a force in the universe that allows the act of creation to take place. This book explores intention—not as something you do—but as an energy you’re a part of. We’re all intended here through the invisible power of intention. This is the first book to look at intention as a field of energy that you can access to begin co-creating your life with the power of intention.
Part I deals with the principles of intention, offering true stories and examples on ways to make the connection. Dr. Dyer identifies the attributes of the all-creating universal mind of intention as creative, kind, loving, beautiful, expanding, endlessly abundant, and receptive, explaining the importance of emulating this source of creativity. In Part II, Dr. Dyer offers an intention guide with specific ways to apply the co-creating principles in daily life. Part III is an exhilarating description of Dr. Dyer’s vision of a world in harmony with the universal mind of intention.

Book Description

Dr. Laura Schlessinger is the incredibly popular and controversial psychotherapist who hosts a nationally syndicated, top-rated midday radio talk show. She has strong convictions and doesn't hesitate to voice them to callers. She urges women emphatically to lose a domineering jerk of a lover and pick one of the "good guys," to stay home and parent the babies they've made, and to follow the dream rather than some dreamboat. Above all, she exhorts women not to blame anybody or anything but themselves if they're unhappy and their lives seem a mess.

10 Stupid Things Women Do to Mess Up Their Lives uses real-world examples from Schlessinger's radio show and private practice to drive the message home. And the message is that our reticence to be bold and brave often makes us act like stupid, submissive victims. Once we muster the courage to take responsibility for our own problems and to tolerate the discomforts of risk, the possibilities for personal growth and joy are limitless.

If you're looking for an all-approving hand to hold, you won't find it here. If you're prepared to take a clear-eyed look at your self-diminishing behavior and to make the move to a quality existence, there's no one better than Schlessinger to keep you honest and to cheer you on. One thing's for sure: You'll never look at your relationships, behaviors and decisions the same way after you've finished reading this book.

4 out of 5 stars Highly recommend!.......2007-09-05

During a discussion with a friend of mine about a relationship issue I had, she made me promise to get and read this book. I have to say, it's a definite must read for any girl, lady or women that has any question about a relationship she's in. The author gives so many great examples of her callers and patients that I found myself able to see a clearer picture of what I was doing in my relationship.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-04-22

I read the 10 Stupid Things Men Do, and thought it was fantastic. Then my girlfriend was reading this one. I had to pick it up and find out what was in it.

Schlessinger hits the truth so consistently. And most of it seems so obvious, as if we should have noticed it right away.

5 out of 5 stars Honest.......2007-02-22

I think that every woman should read this book ~ maybe even a requirement for young women in school. I wish I had read it when I was younger... I might not have squandered so many years doing all the things she says not to do. To me, this is the handbook for women ~ & c'mon, it's a quick, good, & life-changing read!

3 out of 5 stars not very deep.......2007-02-21

It does not have much depth. It basically tells you one thing: as a woman, be independent, do not mentally(emphasis of the book) or economically rely on men. I do not think I learned much by reading the book. Some case stories are interesting but I would expect more depth in explaning why this is so and why this is not so.

But if you are upset or depressed because a man rejected you or something like that, this book may help you feel better because you will know that it does not just happen to you becuase there are so many other more unfortunate women.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I read this as a teenager!.......2007-02-17

No one ever told me these things. This is one fabulous book. I am a university counselor and the young women I see were never told these things either. I recommend it to all of them.

Want to learn how to speak the language of critters, large and small? Easy-to-read and understand, Ted Andrews's bestselling Animal Speak shows readers how to identify his or her animal totem and learn how to invoke its energy and use it for personal growth and inner discovery. Nature lovers will love this insightful compendium, chock-full of touching stories about animals, natural history, and animal folklore. Readers will also learn magical animal rites and how to read omens. Animal Speak includes a dictionary of bird, animal, reptile, and insect totems, which describe each creature's meaning. For example, if a person's totem is dragonfly, he or she was most likely excessively emotional and passionate in early years, learning with age to balance it with mental clarity and control. If a dragonfly suddenly shows up in your life, it means you may need to gain a new perspective or make a change. --P. Randall Cohan

4 out of 5 stars Animals do indeed communicate information to us.......2007-10-02

This book was recommended to me several years ago, and since reading it I regularly refer to it as an informational resource. On many occasions I have been amazed at how relevant the information about a particular creature was to what I was experiencing at the time it happened to cross my path. I found Animal Speak to be of such value to me that I chose to include an excerpt from it within my own book. As such, I highly recommend it to any person who has interest in the spiritual path.

Animal Speak: The Spiritual & Magical Powers of Creatures Great & Small

Great book, I had seen Ted Andrews in person, what an incredible man. I already had so many books at the time, I did not buy it then and have him sign it. But recently it is the time of skunks and well, I have just seen/smell for several weeks. My friend has the book, and she read me the section about skunks, and it was amazing. how much of what it had to say about skunks, from strength, relationships, boundaries, sensuality, were the things I was looking at in my life. So I decided to buy the book after all, and it is a great thing.

5 out of 5 stars Animal Speak Still Going Strong.......2007-08-11

This purchase was a replacement for an fifteen year old copy that I simply wore out. I bought the first copy when I met Ted Andrews in 1987, I teach neo-shamanism and suggest that all of my students have this book and it's accompaniment "Nature Speak." Ted is a naturalist and knows animals and nature first hand. He combines his knowledge with ancient and modern myth and lore to give us a comprehensive guide to how animals interact in our metaphysical world.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Information about animal symbolism.......2007-07-31

"The most common belief in many societies is that spiritual guides often use animals or animal imagery to communicate their purpose and roles to humans." -From the book.

I was drawn to this book several years ago when I had a recurring dream about an animal and felt sure that there was an important message in it for me. I have used it several times since to look up the meaning associated with certain animals that came across my path. We may think that these encounters are random or coincidental, but they're not. Often we don't see signs that are right in front of us. Does it take a billboard to get you to take notice? For me, sometimes it does, but I have tried to slow down and pay attention to these subtle natural nudges because a lot of times, they contain a powerful message or just good advice! Just as symbols, seeing/encountering certain animals may, on the surface have no meaning to us, but our subconcious knows what it means.

There is a HUGE amount of information in this book. It is very interesting to read. In addition to finding out the meanings/messages of animals, it also tells you how to find out what your nature totems are and how to work with that energy.

In chapter 4 'Reading signs and omens in nature' there are charts for the meanings or symbolism of certain trees and flowers and the positive/negative qualities of colors.

Highly interesting book and great to have for reference.

Hands of Light: A Guide to Healing Through the Human Energy Field, by Barbara Ann Brennan, is a scientist's look at the field of bioenergetic healing, offering specific techniques towards expanding perceptual tools of healing, seeing auras, understanding psychodynamics and the human energy field, and spiritual healing. Trained as a physicist and psychotherapist, Brennan has spent the last 15 years studying the human energy field and working as a healer. Hands of Light goes beyond conventional, objective knowledge while retaining scientific clarity. It details a study of the human energy field and how it is intimately connected to a person's health and well being and contains essential information for anyone involved in healing and conscious health care, including people seeking to heal themselves. Science and spirituality may currently be at odds, but fortunately there will always be scientists who are spiritual seekers, and it is in the mingling of the two worlds where wisdom is born. --Jodie Buller

Book Description

With the clarity of a physicist and the compassion of a gifted healer with fifteen years of professional experience observing 5,000 clients and students, Barbara Ann Brennan presents the first in-depth study of the human energy field for people who seek happiness, health and their full potential.

Our physical bodies exist within a larger "body," a human energy field or aura, which is the vehicle through which we create our experience of reality, including health and illness. It is through this energy field that we have the power to heal ourselves.

This energy body -- only recently verified by scientists, but long known to healers and mystics -- is the starting point of all illness. Here, our most powerful and profound human interactions take place, the precursor and healer of all physiological and emotional disturbances.

Hands of Light is your guide to a new wholeness. It offers:

• A new paradigm for the human, in health, relationship, and disease
• An understanding of how the human energy field looks, functions, is disturbed, healed, and interacts with friends and lovers.
• Training in the ability to see and interpret auras
• Medically verified case studies of healing people from all walks of life with a variety of illnesses.
• Guidelines for healing the self and others.
• The author's personal and intriguing life adventure which gives us a model for growth, courage and possibilities for expanded consciousness

5 out of 5 stars valuable reference book for healers.......2007-10-17

Excellent book covering all you need to know, easy to read, understand and apply techniques. I have worked a energy healer for the last 10 years, but have still gained points of interest from this book.
I have loaned my copy to friends who have taken in interest in this field and they have really enjoyed it,they have found the illustrations helpful. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in or currently practicing energy healing.

5 out of 5 stars hands of light.......2007-09-22

This is a fascinating book. An absolute essential for practising healers, or anybody interested in that field. The author is an extemely intelligent lady, so, I must admit that some of it went over my head, the technical parts that is, but that still does not detract from the books worth. It is the sort of book that you will keep forever as a reference book.

5 out of 5 stars Good book!.......2007-07-28

This was the text in a grad level class I took, and I'm glad the prof chose it! This is a great read for anyone that wants to learn how negotiation affects all aspects of your life as well as for those who want to improve their negotiating skills!

4 out of 5 stars Great content, very dry.......2006-11-03

The book has many excellent points, but is written in a manner that will bore you. Several of us in class have three books to read, and this one is the least interesting. I still would recommend it as a good textbook, but only if used as an additional resource to "Getting to Yes" and "You can negotiate anything". Between the three you'll stay interested and the overlap will reinforce.

3 out of 5 stars Used in MBA program - not that useful.......2006-04-06

We used this book in our negotiations class and actually found Getting to Yes to be more useful. This is one of those textbooks that I have written about in other classes that has a lot of common sense in it but it actually makes thinking about negotiation harder than it really is. The book could easily have been shrunk from 430 pages to about 150 pages. The book actually presents too many things to think about in a negotiation that you end up becoming confused about which strategy to use or how to play defense. Of course, like any book some people might like it but I know myself and other classmates did not find it that helpful.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book........2005-10-21

Definitely recommended for anyone interested in learning more about the topic. I enjoyed Thompson's no-nonsense approach to negotiation. This book is full of interesting case examples from the real world. It is substantive and practical. Definitely a good buy.

4 out of 5 stars Great Information - Complicated Read.......2005-06-07

A good introduction to negotiations. Although it is complicated to read through the chapters, it contains valuable information about many different aspects of negotiations and strategies.

Book Description

Composed of cutting-edge reasearch and featuring an engaging writing style, the author offers compelling scientific answers to the profound human questions regarding love and work. Beginning with a historial introduction, the text logically progresses by discussing adaptive problems humans face and ends with a chapter showing how the new field of evolutionary psychology encompasses all branches of psychology. Each chapter is alive with the subjects that most occupy our minds: sex, mating, getting along, getting ahead, friends, enemies, and social hierarchies. Why is child abuse 40 times more prevalent among step-families than biologically intact families? Why, according to one study, did 75% of men but 0% of women consent to have sex with a complete stranger? Buss explores these intriguing quandaries with his vision of psychology in the new millenium as a new science of the mind. Anyone with an interest in the biological facets of human psychology will find this a fascinating read.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good Intro.......2007-10-12

This was the first book I read dealing with Evolutionary Psychology. I read it after college and law school so the textbook format was actually perfect for what I was looking for. It begins with a rudimentary and straight forward explanation of evolution by natural selection. From there it gets into the details of evolutionary psychology. It is a very solid introduction to the field in my opinion. I was told that when it comes to EP to start with Buss's book but don't end there and I sort of see why. I don't think you could go wrong by starting here.

3 out of 5 stars high on appeal, low on rigor.......2005-06-24

I used this book as a text book for a course I taught on Evolutionary Psychology. On the whole, the students really enjoyed the text and they found Buss's writing style to be very engaging and easy to read. I would agree.

Nevertheless, I feel this book--like the whole field of Evolutionary Psychology--requires a far more rigorous scientific framework before it can be considered a field that can substantively explain human behavior from an evolutionary perspective. Don't get me wrong: evolutionary hypotheses can provide a lot of insight into particular human behaviors. However, I would have liked to see much more discussion on what is science, what constitutes a scientifically valid argument, how do we falsify a particular hypothesis, etc. These issues could be covered in a few pages or so, and I think they could help flesh out or perhaps even justify some of the arguments put forth in the text. As it stands now, the book reads more like an apologetic and as I skim the pages, I get the same feeling that I do when I've been pamphleted by evangelicals. Buss's arguments are fraught with generalizations: studies on college kids are extrapolated to the whole human species, studies on plumage color in birds are used to argue for handicaps in humans, and on and on it goes. There are sentences that make pretty extraordinarly claims that go unreferenced and there are sentences that make trivial points that are tailed by six references.

Professor Buss does a good job in conveying the basics of natural selection, but then uses some of the most tenuous definitions of fitness in trying to make an adaptive argument: questionaires, age, symmetry, and even intuition are all stand-ins for fitness. This is a shame because in order to know when selection will operate, we need to know how phenotypic (including behavioral) variation covaries with fitness. Because his fitness proxies are so weak, I have a hard time buying many of the arguments advanced in the book. Other evolutionary forces are rarely discussed; such lapses are unfortunate since it is likely that drift has played some (if not a major) role in getting populations to cross adaptive valleys, as well as affecting the evolutionary dynamics of frequency-dependent selection. But I digress...

I hope future editions (and I'm sure they're on their way) will include a chapter on scientific and evolutionary epistemology. That is, I would like to see a chapter address the question: what steps do evolutionary biologists proceed through when they make an adaptive argument. This would be a timely and useful contribution given that intelligent-design folks are trying to loosen up and poke holes in the definition of science. One chapter starts down this road but never critically discusses how hypotheses are tested (and rejected!), it focuses more on how hypotheses are developed--and believe me, evolutionary psychologists are good at coming up with hypotheses. Professor Buss's book, with its profligate use of unfalsifiable hypotheses, does not help the cause in this respect. Sure, evolutionary psychologists can always hide behind Lakatos as they denigrate Popper for being too severe, or, like Dunbar et al., they can actually learn some math, some scientific epistemology, and help bring evolutionary psychology into a more rigorous, more reputable position. Buss's book does too much of the former and not enough of the latter.

5 out of 5 stars HUMAN CIVILIZATION FROM THE PRESENT: WHY WE ACT THIS WAY.......2004-03-27

Each day for twenty-something years I woke up to see reality as it was presented to me. I noticed many patterns in life that are hard not to notice -- such as the difference between men and women in how they approach sexual opportunities. Men will readily say yes, women firmly no. Why?

Evolution is such an intriguing and elegant theory on its approach to our current behavior. Boss's contention is that the present behaviors we see today in our modern era -- fear of snakes, high male sexual drive -- arose from our ancestors. Those who did not have such characteristics did not become our ancestors. Thus, over time, certain characteristics were more likely to be successful in the mating process, and those are the same characteristics we see today. Boss's insight required a lot of keen intellectual insight into many different hypothesis.

Some of these hypothesis seemed far-fetched at first. Who would think that there would be statistical differences in how maternal grandparents v. paternal grandparents relate to their grandchildren. There are, however. Maternal grandmothers have less risk in investing in a grandchild who is not biologically related since she is confident that her daughter is biologically hers, and she can be certain that her daughter's child is biologically related, too. The hypothesis that paternal grandfathers would be most distant -- since they have the most to lose -- turned out to be true. (Paternal grandfathers cannot be 100% certain that they fathered their son or daughter, and thus, they cannot be sure that that child's son or daughter is biologically related).

This is perhaps one of the most important contributions in scientific literature since Watson and Clark's published report on their findings of DNA.

Michael Gordon

5 out of 5 stars A thorough, rigorous, and illuminating book........2002-06-01

David Buss, author of The Evolution of Desire and The Dangerous Passion, brings his formidable intellect, research experience, knowledge, and writing talent to bear in this impressive introduction to the field of Evolutionary Psychology. It is obvious from reading the book that it was painstakingly researched. An impressive breadth of research studies in evolutionary psychology and relevant work from other disciplines, including anthropology, biology, and sociology are clearly explained and their implications discussed. Alternative hypotheses and interpretations of research, where alternatives have been explicitly proposed, are even-handedly explored. The chapters of the book are organized by the kinds of problems of survival and reproduction faced by our ancestors. This organization makes the broad range of specific research covered in the book easy to understand and integrate into a coherent understanding of the evolutionary origins of human cognition and behavior. Thought-provoking, absorbing, and exceptionally well written: Dr. Buss's Evolutionary Psychology text is an absolute joy to read. It is a must-have for psychologists, biologists, and any student of human nature.

3 out of 5 stars Procede with Caution.......2001-01-13

I have not read the text book. I am a former student of Dr. Buss' and suspect that it will be as vacant in theory as his previous literary attempts. Evolutionary Psychology is an extremely interesting field, but as with any field must be considered in an interdisciplanary manner. The reviewers that make blanket statements about Evolutionary Psychology being the only world view might benefit from reading some philosophy without prejudging it as merely a coping mechanism. For those of you who considering purchasing this book, the last time I spoke with Dr. Buss, he had only very superficial knowledge of the more detailed and sophisticated theories in this field of study and this will probably be reflected in the text book. To be fair, his writing is often enjoyable and as others have said, does read like a novel, but do not mistake this for depth of knowledge.
