News you can use, but a bit annoying.......2006-08-29
Hohmann presents a fair amount of useful folk wisdom on enterprise software architecture. IMHO, this information is useful enough to try to struggle beyond the annoyances that Hohmann needlessly creates: (a) inventing annoying buzzwords like "tarchitecture" and misusing perjorative slang like "marketecture" (synonym: vaporware); (b) politocorrectoid smarm (all people in positions of responsibility are "she" and all low-level drones are "he"); and (c) Hohmann's very high opinion of himself.
I wish this book was on softcopy so that I could edit this stuff out. I'd have had an easier time reading it. As it is, I've had to take the book in small doses.
Reinventing the wheel.......2006-05-08
I had great hopes for this book, but for any industry veteran it is basically a repackaging of what many other "experts" have written before. The book is needlessly verbose, but yet glosses over key points with literary hand waving. The lack of significant examples, business cases, and real world process development gives one the feeling the book is merely the presentation of a thesis or philosophy devoid of concrete real world application.
For someone just starting out in the industry they may glean some basic concepts, but there are so many more publications that do a better job and do it cleaner.
Very unique, yet not gripping.......2006-01-24
One of the first things authors are asked by their agents, editors, or prospective publishers is to present an analysis of the other books in the genre that cover the same material as their books. Here, Luke must have had it very easy. He addresses a truly unique market niche (the interaction between technical architecture and marketing) in a way that really no one has done before or attempted to do since.
A book that handles both market segmentation and software product management in 300 odd pages is going to cover a whole lot of real estate and risks spreading the information pretty thin. Things important to folks in product management are not always the same things that are interesting to marketers. This facet of writing a book, target audience identification, is also frequently the subject of discussion with editors and publishes. Not having a clear target audience is where this book comes up a bit short.
Luke attempts to address such a breadth of software product concerns that it's hard for any one target group (technical architects or marketers) to get really interested. Although this book might be good for an entrepreneur or someone new to the field of software product management, it is, at best, a catalog of knowledge for tarchitects and marchitects and is unlikely to include anything that they haven't stumbled across in the field. A number of my colleagues have agreed with my final assessment that this is an easy book to peruse and become familiar with, yet a tough book to dive into and love.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but it seems that while this book might provide a nice skeleton for managers straddling the line between development (techitecture) and business strategy (marketecture), the meat is simply not present. So many opportunities for REAL examples went either unaddressed completely, or worse, were answered with meaningless little 2-paragraph sidebars filled with sentences like, "then we sat down to talk about things and we decided to approach things from a different angle, blah, blah, blah." Thanks. I can't say this book was a complete waste of time but it certainly wasn't the best use of my time, either, sadly. And the coining of these ridiculous terms like "techitecture" were truly hard to take.
Software Startup 101.......2004-07-19
Beyond Software Architecture should be required reading for anyone starting a software company - that is unless one prefers the school of hard knocks!
Luke does a fabulous job of going beyond the many books written on software and technology and beyond the many books, classes, and seminars addressing how to create a successful startup and get funded.
Hohmann's keen insight and practical advice can make an enormous difference for any group of bright and knowledgeable software engineers and/or visionary entrepreneurs with the "killer" application - a difference that can mean success. He clearly defines the space between the technology and the market and draws them together so that technologist and business person alike can gain a necessary understanding for what it takes to bring to market and sustain a successful software product.
I wish that this book had been available ten years ago and that I had read it!

Fabulous Book.......2007-09-16
This is one of the best books (and I have dozens)I have purchased regarding quilting the quilts. Actually, only one other author impressed me as much, and that was Karen McTavish. Great pictures, easy and fun to read. Read the whole thing twice and will again as soon as I get time. Have a pen and pad ready to draw. Great fun! Hope Christine is writing more books real soon!
Identifies general quilting guidlines.......2007-09-07
I have taken several quilting courses, but none ever introduced the idea of designing a quilting pattern based on how the quilt is to be used. Ms. Maraccini gave me a real "AHA" moment. Also, the way she teaches the techniques of machine quilting are excellent. This book influenced my quilting on two quilts within three months of having read it.
Tricky Quilting.......2007-08-29
This book shows how to machine quilt freehand, without a pattern! Has good examples of how to distribute pattern over the quilt, and shows clearly how to achieve this without having to fuss over tracing patterns onto your fabric first. Think of the time saved! Is a little daunting at first, but very clear and simple to follow instructions make it a very clever book.

Kathleen Miller, a practical financial planner, has compiled one of the best and most comprehensive financial resource for women facing divorce. She likens divorce to riding an escalator "once you're on you are going to get off--whether under your own power or by being thrown off by the unrelenting process of the legal system (p. 2)."
Miller takes a tough, no-nonsense, eyes-open approach while holding your hand every step of the way. She divides the process into 5 predictable stages 1) Pre-divorce, 2) Decision, 3) Acceptance, 4) Mourning, 5) Re-Equilibrium. She addresses the various kinds of wives for example the starter wife, the corporate wife, and the alpha earner wife and how each one differs and faces different problems in divorce.
She helps you decide what to do first, shows you how to make an organized plan, what to anticipate and how to navigate through various obtacles. She aims to empower you to take control (to the degree possible) of what can be an overwhelming and unwieldy process. She shows you how to stay focused on moving forward, how to assemble a team to help you through the grueling process, how to choose the type of divorce vehicle that is best for your circumstances, how to cope with change, and most of all--how to avoid poverty. Best divorce book I have read.......2007-04-10
This is the 4th book I've read on divorce. It is very well-written and highly accessible. The author approaches the process in a logical, humane fashion that left me feeling empowered, rather than burdened with list of to-dos.
The author's superb table delineating the phases of a divorce with a timeline makes it relatively easy to form the big picture of what divorce constitutes. She then deconstructs each phase with clear explanations.
After reading the entire book in 2 days, I feel confident in my understanding of what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, and the emotional and legal pitfalls that I need to be aware of.
The flow from chapter to chapter makes for pleasurable reading, an comforting experience when undertaking dissolution of a marriage. Throughout the book, I felt both supported and validated by what I read.
A Must Read for Divorcing Women.......2004-06-02

It prompts you to think about all of the essential areas that comprise the development of a financial plan for now and later. It addresses budgets, insurance, QDRO's, retirement planning and so much more. Having a bad day? Read this book!.......2007-04-05
First, a caveat: I know Joel Saltzman and have worked with him. Had dinner with his family. That said, I paid full price for this book because I know that, more than knowing his stuff, Joel lives it. Shake That Brain! is indeed the culmination of Joel's own life. Get a Post-It pad (mentioned in the book as one of those accidental ideas too silly to be successful--but guess what?) and jot down some of the material, then frame your computer with them. The exuberant tone is contagious, and the premise is unarguably correct: you're the captain of your own attitude, and your mind is a storeroom full of solutions and inspiration. As an admitted self-defeating (at times) nincompoop, I have used the book to fire my own ideas and it works, from questioning assumptions, borrowing good ideas and making them better, and never throwing out an idea that isn't working at the time (it can work later, as you let it germinate). It's a modern philosophy book as much as a business title, and it demands to be put into action. More than anything, the book is FUN, and not in the superficial way that sounds. Pick it up and enjoy it. It's better than therapy, drinking, or basketball (well, professional basketball anyway). And it's fuel for your own weary but indomitable enthusiasm. Highly recommended, and I have nothing to gain from this except a better way to look at things.
Nutritious and tasty food for thought! .......2006-10-24
When I was reading this, I couldnt help myself from comparing it with works of De Bono, and remotely with NLP. The feeling is particularly strong on Chapter 9 'Take an "Opposites" Approach' which provides suggestions as follows:-
How am I going to do all this work? => How are you going to do all this fun?
How do I get them to return my stuff? => How do they get me to return their stuff?
How do I teach this device lots of different handwriting styles? => How do I teach the users of this device one handwriting style?
How do I get telemarketers to stop annoying me? => How do I start annoying them? pg 72
Beside the above, there are many great ideas presented in quotes, points and live stories throughout the book. I like its style and structure very much, in particular the concise "Chapter take away" in the end of each chapter is great, say, in Ch12: Ask yourself "If I were a ______ what would I do? " and "What does this ______ want to be?" and in Ch16: Ask yourself, "What would ______ do?"
To conclude, all who wanna read to imrprove their creativity for solutions will be satisfied well. A helpful and fun read indeed! Highly recommended!

This book will help you think outside the box and develop your own abilities in fun and productive ways. SHAKE THAT BRAIN is full of timeless wisdom but has a down to earth and engaging style. This is a laugh out loud book that is full of valuable insights and attitudes that can help you to reach your goals. If there is a better book on creative problem solving than this one, I don't know what it is. Everything in the book that I've tried works. I highly recommend this book. I will never get rid of this book.......2007-10-10
I absolutely loved this book. I got so much unexpected help from it. The title sounds like it's just an average diet book but it is so much more than that. In fact the book isn't about dieting at all. What it's really about is getting down to the core of why you might eat the way you shouldn't based on emotional baggage. It tries to get you to sift through your emotional history and things that may be bothering you. I found out so much about myself and why I eat and I was so happy and relieved to be able to change my habits. I recommend this to anyone that might eat out of emotions.

Doesn't deliver the goods.......2006-06-02
This book was hyped as a "simple" solution to weight loss. The concepts may be simple but don't confuse simple with easy. The concept of climbing mount Everest is simple too. Somehow this "simple" set of solutions leads to a seemingly endless trail of products and seminars that will eventually get you where you want to be. I have no patince for a book that is merely a tease and a marketing tool to get you deeper in debt to it's author. Whatever good ideas were in this book got lost in my anger of being shilled.

In each section, the authors attempt to "fill in" the appropriate background and then provide the student with a variety of worked examples and exercises to help bridge the gap between what he or she may already know and what is required for high-level competitions. Answers or sketches of the solutions are given for all exercises. The book makes an attempt to introduce each area "gently" assuming little in the way of prior background - and teach the appropriate techniques, rather than simply providing a compilation of high-level problems.

Excellent Book on Problem Solving.......2001-07-10
This is an awesome book on problem solving. While it is true that you should have a couple of seperate references to comprehend fully the mathematics the author uses, I'm sure it's because he assumes a working knowledge on much of the material (contrary to the preface that states that it is a transition from regular high school material---Well, this it is not!). Many exercises and Olympiad questions covering the material presented in each chapter are given. Hints and solutions to the exercises(but not Olympiad questions--whose answer you can find on many sites) are given. There are alot of interesting topics covered (numbers, combinatorics, algebra, induction, pigeonhole, etc) in ways that I hadn't seen them presented. This is an excellent buy for those interested in solving tough and interesting mathematics problems.
Well thought out, though at times hard to follow.......1997-08-16
This book traverses through many (though not all) of the subjects encountered in olympiad-style problems. One notable exception is the lack of geometry information.
The book is very much proof oriented. While this gives the problem solver deeper insight into the mathematics involved, some of the proofs are unessasarily hard to understand. Minor modifications would have made the author's logic more apparent.
Included problems well supplement the problem-solver, but require him to explore outside the bounds of what is explained in the text.
This book is definately not for the casual reader, but is a must for training high-school and early college students. Expect at least a semester of course work.
