Book Description
Describes many inexpensive ways inventors can figure out, while protecting all patent rights, what their idea's real value is long before it's necessary to spend money on the patent. Dozens of Internet and other resources are provided with complete instructions for using them to your best advantage. This book is designed as the first book a new inventor should read to figure out what they need to do, where they can get help, and how to avoid the costly pitfalls that every inventor faces. The marketing information provided and the many referrals to other resources will also be valuable to experienced inventors seeking to expedite the costly process of entering an unknown market.
Customer Reviews:
Will It Sell? The best investment you will make........2007-05-09
I am a patent agent. I am licensed by the US Patent and Trademark Office to represent clients as they apply for a patent. I recommnend this book to all my prospective clients, even though, after reading it, many decide not to hire my services. Why would I recommend a book that costs me business? Because it is in the best interest of my clients.
Mr. White is a crusty old marketing dude who is a straight shooter and does not care if he hurts your (the inventor's) feelings. Too often independent inventors, fall in love with their idea or invention and cannot see its shortcomings or flaws. Too many inventors run out and pay $5,000+ for a patent only to find later that they cannot sell either the patent nor the product. The author holds a mirror up for the inventor to determine the chances his/her product will have in the marketplace BEFORE they spend a few thousand dollars on a patent application.
Just as every new parent thinks that their baby is the prettiest, and smartest in the world, every inventor seems to think that their invention is the best thing since indoor plumbing. This trap of not being able to evaluate your invention objectively, can cost you big money. Mr. White can save you thousands of dollars on a so-so invention so you will have the money available to pursue that really great idea that is just around the corner.
An older book full of useful content.......2006-10-14
As an information consultant to industry and the government during the 1980's, it wasn't until 1998 when James White noticed an ad in the Lansing, Michigan newspaper about an inventors club. He visited it a few times and decided to join. His outspoken advice led to a club presentation, and it was after the meeting he decided it was time to put this valuable information down in book form. 'The presentation was declared a success. But it was quickly determined that the speech, which just outlined the principles for determining marketability and getting to the market, had almost no apparent effect on the counter productive behaviors of most of the club members. In the middle of this book you will find a quote from Doug Tackens, president of a household manufacturing firm with over 50 years of invention experience, which defines marketing as follows:
Marketing:
Is getting the right product
To the right people
At the right price
Through the right distribution channels
By the right promotion.
This book gets you into the heart of the matters of successful invention from the very beginning. White doesn't mince any words on what he feels is the right route to inventing a successful product. There are already plenty of books about marketing your product, this book is about the product itself. The author urges the reader to stick with something they already know and keep it small (toaster sized).
Each step of the way, White has a unique evaluation system in place that lets you rate your progress. The book has a gold mine of references for those willing to do their homework - and let's face it, if you are not willing, you have no business trying to invent something! There are plenty of website addresses, many of which are now broken links due to the age of the book. In spite of that fact, White has some good advice - "If you don't use the Internet, you'll almost always find yourself eating dust these days."
I recommend this for any would-be innovator/inventor. It may not be the easiest book for someone to comprehend, so I suggest you take your time reading and absorbing the contents a few hours at a time. Make sure to highlight and tag the pages that benefit you the most. Also, note that there is some very specific technical information, such as what kind of computer to buy and what kind of ISP to get, that is obviously out of date. I think the value of the overall wisdom conveyed overrides this obviously archaic technical advice.
Very helpful.......2006-01-15
This book convinced me that the idea I had wasn't profitably marketable. It's very blunt and to-the-point. He has a lot of tips and things to think about. I'm glad I went through the book before I wasted time and money. On to the next idea....
There should be clear descriptions when people decide to sell brochure wear.......2005-10-22
The advice seems to come from a real desire to share wisdom. However, the ideas can hardly seem impartial and objective with the degree of self-promotion the author indulges the reader in this short handbook. The author or editor of the book's description should try to clarify this position in the description. With the wealth of experience Mr. White has in this area, this book could have been written very professionally, as opposed to professionally promotional.
Prepare Yourself for the Real World of Invention.......2001-11-24
"Will It Sell?" is deap reading for the "idea person" who thought that there was a pot of gold waiting at the end of the "good idea rainbow." James E. White, author, tells you like it is--he doesn't mince words. He digs out every fact and every reason why your inventive idea can "fail," but he hopes that you will be the one-in-one-hundred-inventors whose invention won't fail.. He will be your mentor. When Jim explains a fact and each step to follow, you get the feeling that he is looking over your shoulder, correcting and helping you in your every move. "This is the book." If you think reading it is tough, then don't become an inventor. He'll tell you "how to get there," with every reference on each of the 300 pages. And he shows, like no other author, that if you fail on any one stage, don't even think about averaging-out the stages of invention to Pass. He tells the truth-- "No one said it would be easy." -- Who am I to tell you about "Will It Sell?" -- only the President of the Inventors Association of St. Louis, a large inventors' helping organization founded in 1984, that augmented in 1990 the United Inventors Association of the USA - which has over 3000 members. That's who! BUY THE BOOK - "WILL IT SELL"
Book Description
A bold forecast of how the coming auction culture revolution will radically transform what, how, and why we buy
Visionary entrepreneur Daniel Nissanoff breaks the news that the eBay auction phenomenon is about to explode in a big new way, revolutionizing how all consumers-not just eBay mavens-do their shopping, not only online but offline as well. The big payoff of this revolution is for consumers: They will be able to "trade up" more often to buy the brands they most want by embracing a new norm of temporary ownership: We will be able to buy more of the things we really want, because we'll also be regularly selling off the things we no longer want or need. We'll be transformed from an "accumulation nation" into an "auction culture." Consider this intriguing fact: In the new auction culture, Manolo Blahnik shoes, a Louis Vuitton handbag, a Hermès tie, or a Bugaboo baby stroller will actually be the better deals.
As huge as eBay has become-it is now the tenth-largest retailer in America-it has only scratched the surface of the potential for online buying and selling. In 2004, only 5 percent of all those who had bought something on eBay had also sold something on the site. But that is about to change-dramatically. Nissanoff reveals that a massive growth of online auction "facilitators" is under way that will make buying and selling online so hassle-free, so reliable, and so lucrative that the masses of consumers who have stayed away will jump aboard. Most prominent among the facilitators are dropshops, where you can bring your goods for sale and they'll handle the whole auction and shipping process. Thousands of such locations have opened in the last two years; they will soon be as pervasive as Starbucks shops. And that's only the beginning.
Daniel Nissanoff, who is at the center of the revolution as the co-founder of one of the leading-edge facilitator companies, introduces the full range of services cropping up-dropshops, authenticators, refurbishers and repackagers, personal reselling assistants, and closet cullers, as well as a wide variety of online shops that lease products, such as the hottest designer handbags and the latest-model golf clubs. He also reveals how all consumers can take advantage of these services for optimal shopping satisfaction and how entrepreneurs can get in on the booming business opportunities.
Even as the auction culture offers consumers and entrepreneurs a wealth of new opportunities, it will also pose serious challenges for retailers and brand managers. Nissanoff analyzes the challenges they will face and presents an ingenous set of strategies companies can employ to turn the challenges of the auction culture to their advantage.
Nissanoff writes, "Temporary ownership means just saying no to second-best and letting yourself reach for the things that will thrill you over and over again-guilt-free." Readers, start your auctions.
Customer Reviews:
Should have been good, had it not been so self-serving.......2007-03-13
I'm really disappointed in this book. The overall premise was a solid one, that if you can buy (say) a DVD for $12, watch it, then resell it on eBay for $5, it really only costy ou $7. The author goes into some of the history and theory of secondary markets, why they work, and why they are important.
Unfortunately, I just gave you the whole book. He repeats the above 3-5 times a chapter for 10 chapters, and weaves in commercials for his own, drop-shipping company, claiming that only fools or hobbyists would consider selling things on eBay themselves. I wish this book had been worth the time or money it took to read it, as the topic is a fascinating one, but instead I feel like I was duped into reading a barely disguised brochure for the author's company. I cannot recommend anything about this book.
Great Book.......2007-01-20
Great book , passed it on to another seller. Its ok to buy stuff and when tired of it put i on ebay. Lots of good ideas
Auction Anyone?.......2006-06-22
Nissanoff shows the reader how the future will most likely be from electronics to despoable goods. No longer will people just through out thier old products-rather create a new source of income. Not just for the individual but for the corp. world as well.
Drop off Shops: Great idea if managed properly.......2006-05-23
The book makes a strong case for eBay drop off stores. I currently have one and constantly need to watch what we sell. There is money to be made if the items sold are the right ones, otherwise, you can fail quickly. Overhead can eat you alive if you don't watch your business closely. Nissanoff makes a strong case and I agree, they are great for the masses who don't want to sell on eBay, or don't know how, or are too busy or just get tired of storing boxes and shipping material at home. Selling on EBay is not hard, just cumbersome and time consuming. Drop off stores are one solution that makes sense. The book has a few new ideas and makes for easy reading.
Interesting premise, could have organized better.......2006-04-30
While the main ideas in the book are not novel or ground-breaking, the author sustains the reader's interest through a very simple, "anecdote" based narration and some observations. The discussion focusing on the specific domains of a wide variety of mediums ranging from thrift shops to the auction houses of the world is very interesting. So is the discussion on future value and opportunity cost. The excellent premise(s) of the book gets lost in somewhat a rambling organization of thoughts and anecdotes. There is seemingly no real transition from chapter to chapter, making the reading somewhat annoying at times. Other than that, a good read. One wishes the author abstracted the examples (all or most of the examples are from his own or his friends) to more well-put observations. Anyone who has read any book on the impact of E-bay will easily relate to the topics, but not necessarily gain very new perspectives.
Book Description
Foreword by Rick Smolan
32-page color insert and black & white photos throughout
Perhaps the most important key to success for sellers on eBay is providing good photographs of their products. In eBay Photography the Smart Way, eBay expert Joseph Sinclair teams up with professional product photographer Stanley Livingston to give readers easy-to-follow instructions for taking better pictures, helping them show off their products to the greatest possible effect. Paving the way for higher profits, the book shows how to:
* shop for and buy a digital camera
* shoot any kind of product
* photgraph and display entire product inventories
* create great thumbnails
* process photos with image editors
* use angles, lighting, studio props, and backgrounds
* organize process and work flow
On eBay, better pictures mean higher sales. eBay Photography the Smart Way reveals how to take great photos that give customers the confidence to buy online what they can't see in person.
Customer Reviews:
Very superficial.......2006-05-26
I have a good grounding in photography and was hoping for more detailed instruction on product photography. I learned practically nothing. There is a lot of very elementary filler material on general photography, digital cameras and editing software and Internet. The photos are not that great either. May be somewhat useful for someone who has no knowledge at all of these topics
Professionals only. .......2006-02-19
This is not what i expected. I needed a beginners guide. The book tells little about cameras. It's mostly how to do professional shoots...meaning expensive specialized equipment.
One Source For All The Answers.......2005-10-13
As a regular e-bayer, I'm always looking for a competitive marketing edge. This book clearly points a way to gain that edge by differentiating my offerings from a large majority of my competitors. I've often thought that most photographs used in e-bay marketing are mediocre, at best, my own included. When I see a good e-bay photographic presentation, I recognize the selling power that it represents, but I have rarely accomplished it myself. Sinclair and Livingston have produced a terrific book. If you read it and apply the material, almost anyone (including me) can produce "above average" photographs for their e-bay marketing. The book is a quick-read, but provides an excellent reference souce for later application of the material it contains. I've read a couple other e-bay books by Joe Sinclair and one thing I like about all these books is that they have a nice clean easy-to-read layout. Each chapter in this book has substantial stand-alone value. A chapter that may be a trinket to you might be a treasure to me, and vice versa. In total, however, the book will have great value to any serious e-bay marketer. If "a picture is worth a thousand words", then several very good pictures make a powerful e-bay sales presentaion, indeed. My conclusion ... a great book, complete, perfect for practical application.

A complete rip off.......2004-11-04
First of all, this is simply a poor re-write of a great book, which is How to Make a 1,000,000 in the Stock Market Automatically!
by Robert Lichello. This book mimics that book without any of the backstory. This book is mostly pages of poorly copied spreadsheets showing his stock results (from 12 years ago) and really has nothing to do with learning this system.
While it is a great system, it is also a flawed system in that it teaches you to buy stocks as they go down, which can be a hugely bad idea (see Enron, Kmart, Krispy Kreme, America West Airlines, etc...etc...etc....)
I can't believe I paid $26 to re-read the book I already own, How to Make a 1,000,000 in the Stock Market Automatically!
by Robert Lichello which is only $7 and is a much better book. I feel like I've been robbed of $26.
I Guarantee You Will Buy Low Sell High and Make Money.......2001-01-15
This is the best and most informative and usable book on the stock market that I have ever read and is suitable for investors at all levels, even beginners. I wouldn't take $100 for my copy if it couldn't be replaced. The book is not based on theory but a proven portfolio management formula developed and tested sense the 1970's. I am using the method described in the book with success. The book is not a "get rich quick" scheme but a how you can make a steady 20-30% return on your investment safely. The author is very helpful and well informed on the market. The first author I have ever written to that the author will respond promptly and with a willingness to help. The author Jeff Weber also publishes a very informative and useful newsletter for only $15 a year in HTML format. Get this.... the newsletter tells you the stocks that have been thoroughly researched and recommended for this method of investing thus practically all the work is done for you. The author also has an informative web site at: http://jjjinvesting.com I give this book a 5 Star Plus. Buy it -is my recommendation. Feel free to contact me at jimboo@pldi.net if you desire more information on this book.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.......2004-08-06
I cannot say enough good things about this book. I have the 1995 edition that I purchased as a destitute college grad. Aside from my education, this book was probably one of the best investments I have made in my career. The book details how to write thoughtful, meaningful, and impactful (if that's a word) cover letters and thank you letters. As others have written, I have received so many complements from potential employers after having used the techniques in this book. I definitely recommend using it if you want to stand out. It has served me well.
Review by CollegeRecruiter[dot]com.......2001-05-15
I have known Randall Hansen for several years and always been impressed with his level of knowledge and caring for the needs of job seekers. He and his wife Katherine have crafted an absolutely fabulous resource that all job seekers, from entry level to the most experienced, should find incredibly useful.
As the Founder and President of job board CollegeRecruiter.com, I make the final decision about which products to recommend to our users. "Dynamic Cover Letters" easily made the cut. It is a wonderful resource!

I used this book to create my cover letter. Potential employers have praised my cover letter; a recruiter asked me if she could use the same format for her career search.
Excellent Resource - A must have.......2000-07-20
I purchased this book several years ago and have successfully utilized its information to obtain interviews and even job offers. The book provides a step-by-step guide to how to effectively communicate your qualifications in a concise and professional manner. I would recommend this book to others!
