Book Description

Throughout the three centuries before Christ many hundreds of thousands of Thracians, in more than 40 tribes, occupied the area between northern Greece, southern Russia and north-west Turkey. Skilled horsemen, masters of light infantry fighting in broken terrain, and renowned for their ferocity, the Thracians were feared by even the greatest of their contemporaries, who were eager to employ them as mercenaries. After surviving invasions by the Persians, Greeks, Macedonians and Celts, the Thracians were finally conquered by Rome in AD 46. This concise but lavishly illustrated study of their history and material culture includes the results of the latest archaeological research, notably some remarkable tomb paintings.

4 out of 5 stars Thracian Warriors.......2007-03-31

Excellent introduction to an overlooked people. Masters of all major troop types except heavy infantry, the Thracians were one of Europe's most aggressive warrior peoples, and their mercenary armies got caught up in Classical politics time and again. This book also does a good job of portraying the substantial material wealth of this people, but, as most previous reveiwers already said, it suffers from 'noble savage' stereotypes taken from Greek and especially Roman historians. The plates alone are worth the money, being by Angus McBride.

4 out of 5 stars Useful work about an interesting people........2006-01-22

This is a good, accessible summary work about the Thracians. It packs a lot into a small package. The plates capture a good range of settings and styles.

On the negative side: I have to agree with the other reviewer about the author quoting negative contemporary stereotypes of Thracians as if they were established fact. As the other reviewer noted, the Thracians did not leave behind written accounts to counterbalance. However, the author would have been better served to point this out to more casual readers.

I will recommend this work enthusiastically, with the caution above about relying too heavily on quotes of other cultures about Thrace.

5 out of 5 stars One of their better efforts.......2005-07-30

A great book about an overlooked people who were great fighters! There is an added bonus as Mr. McBride did the illustrations. Well done!

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to the Thracians.......2005-06-08

"The Thracians 700 BC - AD 46" by Christopher Webber primarily focuses on historical mentions of this group of ancient people by their contemporary Greek and Roman authors. The book also discusses Thracian armor, weapons, clothing, and tactics, but not as in depth. Although I did learn about this ancient group of people, I found parts confusing because there were mentions of other peoples I am unfamiliar with and they were not explained. This book can add to one's knowledge of ancient people and I would recommend it to those that read the Osprey volumes on the Sarmatians or Scythians.

3 out of 5 stars ...they were of great height, with glitering shields..........2005-02-12

First of all, I have to commend Osprey for issuing this title before they tackled such better known peoples of antiquity as the Etruscans, the Phoenicians and the Hitites. I am sure the publishing of this booklet was due to the great success of the "Thracian Gold" travelling exhibition. It is still a welcome addition of starter kits for anyone interested in military history.
Cristopher Webber's text contains some interesting portions on the dress, armour and tactics of this people - something very difficult to find in a compiled form elsewhere. His historical outline, though, suffers from the same biased attitude that most of the historical sources are soaked in. The ancient Greek and Roman writers considered all non-Greek or non-Roman peoples as "barbarian" (one only has to read their descriptions of the Celts) and their lopsided descriptions of those peoples can hardly be taken at face value - especially if the nation in question had no written language. As a comparison, Osprey's Elite Series "The Huns and the Nomad People" is so much more objective in its treatment of its subject! It is surprising to me that Webber would not incorporate a little critical analysis of the ancient writers, apart from him ommitting such facts as the Thracian origins of Spartacus and the Roman Emperor Maximinus Thrax. I believe a "chronological outline", like some other Osprey titles, would have been more appropriate. For a more detailed information on the history I suggest other books, like Alexander Fol's "Ancient Thrace" - unfortunately a very difficult book to find (I bought mine in Bulgaria).
Angus McBride's illustrations are, of course, some of the best in the Osprey line-up. One thing I cannot understand is why he almost always have to depict the figures in a battle scene, making it difficult to exhibit more detail. I have always assumed that the color plates are an illustration rather than art work (although this doesn't mean they can't be artistic). Once again I would have to refer you to his splendid plate A in the Osprey's "The Greeks". Of course, my last gripe is that this format only allows for a maximum of 3-4 figures per plate - a far cry from the wealth of information in other Osprey titles.

Book Description

The Middle Five, first published in 1900, is an account of Francis La Flesche's life as a student in a Presbyterian mission school in northeastern Nebraska about the time of the Civil War. It is a simple, affecting tale of young Indian boys midway between two cultures, reluctant to abandon the ways of their fathers, and puzzled and uncomfortable in their new roles of "make-believe white men." The ambition of the Indian parents for their children, the struggle of the teachers to acquaint their charges with a new world of learning, and especially the problems met by both parents and teachers in controlling and directing schoolboy exuberance contribute to the authen-ticity of this portrait of the "Universal Boy," to whom La Flesche dedicated his book. Regarded by anthropologists as a classic of Native American literature, it is one of those rare books that are valued by the specialist as authentic sources of information about Indian culture and yet can be recommended wholeheartedly to the general reader, especially to young people in high school and the upper grades, as a useful corrective to the often distorted picture of Indian life seen in movies, comics, and television.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Great, Sweet Story.......2003-07-16

This is a really simple, short read, but it offers such great insight into the lives of five young Native Americans at a mission school. The stories are sweet, but the meanings are profound. Francis La Flesche offers the reader an opportunity to step into their lives and to see how they live and learn in both cultures. I had to read it for a history class, but I enjoyed every part of it. The story does end abruptly, with an ending story unlike the other stories, but it is still worth reading and I would recommend it to anyone interested in Native American life!

      Book Description

Robin Ridington and Dennis Hastings ingeniously adopt the conventions of Omaha oral narratives to tell the story and convey the significance of the Sacred Pole. Portions of classic anthropological texts (particularly Fletcher and La Flesche’s The Omaha Tribe), Omaha narratives, and other historical and contemporary accounts are repeated—each time in a different, more enlightening context—in a circle of stories seamlessly woven around Umon’hon’ti. The result is an innovative account that effortlessly glides between past and present. This unique blend of Omaha poetics, ethnography, and ethnohistory is a significant contribution to our understanding of the religious life of Native Americans.

      5 out of 5 stars Dorsey's Cegiha Language.......2000-04-01

This (1890)is one of two large collections of Omaha and Ponca texts prepared by the Rev. James O. Dorsey for the Bureau of American Ethnology (now incorporated in the Smithsonian Institution). The other is Omaha and Ponka Letters (1891), which is a supplement to this. Two or three texts remain in the National Anthropological Archives unpublished. One referred to a Congressman of the time in disparaging terms, and the others were obscene.

This material was part of a slated series, to include also a grammar and a lexicon. These were never published, due to Dorsey's untimely death. The manuscript(s) for the grammar, based loosely on the Riggs Dakota (Santee) grammar can be consulted at the NAA, which also holds the estimated 20,000 slips of Dorsey's Omaha-Ponca lexical files, and numerous other documents accumulated by him in the course of his Siouan work.

The Cegiha language consists of two volumes bound together with a common introduction. The volumes are indexed. Each volume consists of a series of texts in Dorsey's Government Printing Office version of his orthigraphy for Omaha-Ponca. Traditional literary texts come first, then more recent stories shading into historical texts and culminating in letters. Dorsey apparently kept copies of letters of the Omaha-Ponca text of letters that he wrote for members of the two tribes.

The details of the arrangements he made in connection with the letters are unknown, but as Dorsey seems to have been scrupulous in his dealings with the Omaha and Ponca and neither his colleague Francis LaFlesche (an Omaha) or any others at the time or soon after ever made any complaints on this score, I assume this keeping and publication was done with the knowledge of the authors and did not concern them. The letters are especially valuable as historical records, besides presenting contexts for linguistic constructions that might not otherwise be as well exemplified.

Apart from the numerous individual letter dictators (and in one case, writer) with whom Dorsey worked, he worked with a series of Ponca and Omaha individuals, mainly members of or associates of the LaFlesche families. Several Omaha individuals also assisted him in editing the material, and their useful comments, sometimes attributed, are listed in the notes.

Each text is presented in interlinear literal word (or phrase) by word translation, followed by a free translation. Each text has individual end notes and there are also end note series for the two volumes.

The texts have various faults that are due to the technology for recording them (rapid ink pencil handwriting on wrapping paper) or the early state of investigation of Omaha-Ponca and other Siouan languages, and they are not without some printing errors or mistranslations, but they are a priceless linguistic, literary, and historical testament to the Omaha and Ponca people of the 1880s and their neighbors.

In addition, even without Dorsey's numerous other publications, and the large body of fieldnotes, notes, and manuscripts in progress that Dorsey left behind at his death, this volume and its companion would establish Dorsey as scholar of stature, and through Franz Boas, who used this material in seminars with his students, as a seminal influence on American anthropology and linguistics. Student after student of Boas compiled grammars and collected texts in the original on Dorsey's model as a preface to their anthropological investigations, not always willingly, but to the continuing benefit of both the Native American groups involved and subsequent generations of anthropologists and linguists.

            Book Description

The Omaha Tribe of Nebraska has borne more than its fair share of the burden created by the federal government’s wildly vacillating Indian policy. Mark R. Scherer’s Imperfect Victories provides a detailed examination of the Omahas’ tenacious efforts to overcome the damaging effects of shifting directions in federal policy during the last fifty years. The Omahas’ struggles are particularly significant because the tribe often bore the initial impact of experimental legislation that would later be implemented nationally.

Scherer details the disastrous consequences of postwar federal legislation that transferred control over Indian affairs to state authorities as a precursor to the wholesale termination of Indian tribalism. The legislation brought jurisdictional turmoil to the Omaha reservation and placed the Omahas in chronic conflict with local law enforcement agencies. As the tribe fought to become the first Indian group in the nation to escape the effects of that law through retrocession, they waged equally notable struggles for the redress of past wrongs with the Indian Claims Commission and in the federal courts. Scherer demonstrates that the Omahas’ successes in those campaigns have been at best imperfect victories, coming only after years of hardship and failing to eliminate many underlying tensions and problems.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book and an Important Subject.......2002-03-28

The author succeeded in using a narrow topic to teach a broader lesson on the plight of thousands of Native Americans during the last century. Every American should understand our government's policies toward Native Americans and its effect both pro and con. Mr. Scherer succeeded by telling the story of the Omahas without prejudice and by allowing the facts to paint the picture. Imperfect Victories is a brilliant introduction to these issues and the resultant human consequences. Mr. Scherer does not portend to give policy insight, but he gives the reader the facts necessary to understand the decisions made by elected officials and bureaucrats that have lasting and real effects on living human beings long after these policymakers have faded from the public scene. I'm looking forward to more books in this series on Law in the American West. I hope other authors take Mr. Scherer's lead and tackle vital policy and judicial issues with clarity and his concise writing style. Though an avid history reader I gained more insight in the 200 pages of Imperfect Victories than from much larger and better-known volumes.

                  Book Description

In the time since the second edition of The ACS Style Guide was published, the rapid growth of electronic communication has dramatically changed the scientific, technical, and medical (STM) publication world. This dynamic mode of dissemination is enabling scientists, engineers, and medical practitioners all over the world to obtain and transmit information quickly and easily. An essential constant in this changing environment is the requirement that information remain accurate, clear, unambiguous, and ethically sound. This extensive revision of The ACS Style Guide thoroughly examines electronic tools now available to assist STM writers in preparing manuscripts and communicating with publishers. Valuable updates include discussions of markup languages, citation of electronic sources, online submission of manuscripts, and preparation of figures, tables, and structures. In keeping current with the changing environment, this edition also contains references to many resources on the internet. With this wealth of new information, The ACS Style Guide's Third Edition continues its long tradition of providing invaluable insight on ethics in scientific communication, the editorial process, copyright, conventions in chemistry, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and writing style for any STM author, reviewer, or editor. The Third Edition is the definitive source for all information needed to write, review, submit, and edit scholarly and scientific manuscripts.

                  5 out of 5 stars don't know what I'd do without it!.......2007-03-08

I'm a science copyeditor, and I truly don't know how I'd manage without this book. If it has to do with chemistry, it's here (thank heaven!). And there's a wealth of clear information about how to format math, a wonderful list of unit abbreviations, and even a fair amount about physics- and biology-related terminology. It has the most lucid and concise explanations I've seen about when to apply italics or roman. And it's reasonably priced. Of course, if you specifically need to follow ACS style, this book is de rigeur, but even if you don't, you'll find it invaluable for science copyediting.

Must have for those taking the Officers Advanced Course Phase I. I found that the CD on the Effects of Nuclear Weapons distributed by the AMEDD & S to be incomplete and lacking. However, I was pleasantly surprised that the "21st Century Complete Guide..." supplemented and enhanced AMEDD's CD. The "21st Century Complete Guide..." has a listing of websites for those who would like more information on the topic which I found very helpful and invaluable. (I was able to answer questions in the OAC exam that I would not have been able to do without the help of the "21st Century Complete Guide..." !)

5 out of 5 stars An essential book that every engineer should have.......2005-07-28

It's a pity this is out of print. I have the 2nd edition which was one of the first general engineering books I ever bought. I still use it regularly. Starting with math and working through all engineering fields (up to nuclear engineering), it's well organized and clearly written. Not an academic book, this is targeted at working engineers who need quick access to reliable data or who need to call upon a skill which has become rusty with lack of use.

Highly recommended if you can find it!

The book holds the most important equations that an engineer will need in the working feild. This book is a handy size that allows one to bring along with them unlike the full lenght Perry's chemical engineering handbook. It is a must buy for a working engineer
