on the global environment."Pulitzer Prize winner E. O. Wilson
In State of the World 2006, the Worldwatch Institute's award-winning research team provides concerned citizens and national leaders with comprehensive analysis of the global environmental problems we face, together with detailed descriptions of practical, innovative solutions, like the increased demand for meat production and consumption, growing awareness of corporate social responsibility, the booming industry of ecotourism, and the ethics and application of nanotechnology.
Written in clear and concise language, with easy-to-read charts and tables, State of the World 2006 presents a view of our changing world that we, and our leaders, cannot afford to ignore.

No reason not to read this report.......2006-06-15
There's really not very much to say about this book, except that every single human being who knows how to read should read it.
Some of its contents are positive, much of it is negative, but everything is equally important to know.
This world of ours deserves a better fate than being utterly destroyed by the human race. However, this nasty possibillity is approaching extremely fast, and unless people start reacting to the issues at stake we're all doomed.
This book will not save the world, but if there's one book that can really make a difference, then this is the one.
So go get it. As fast as you can. You owe it to the world.
Big trouble ahead.......2006-02-27
It seems overwhelming. Resources are being squandered, damage is extensive and accelerating.
"State of the world 2006" focuses on a few areas of concern, any one of which poses a substantial risk: quickly developing countries (with developed countries already having heavily damaged the world), the meat industry, fresh water supplies, alternatives to oils, possible impacts of nanotechnolog and mercury. The impact of disasters, the implications of sustainability upon trade, and the role of corporations are also explored.
Enough is presented to be frightening. Can each of these aress, as well as the many others that may not be sustaniable, can be effectively handled before serious crises occur? As with global warming, it seems that very serious crises are already well underway.
This book references the 2005 Millenium Ecosystem Assessment work of the World Health Organization. Downloads of much of this work are available. At it own web site, the Worldwatch Institure has more information including downloads.
Many of us are or tend to be contributors to the damage of the world. It's easy to be distracted by other problems and not address this. It's easy to think of the small impact of what just one of us does without considering the impact of billions. It seems overwhelming so it's good that an organization like the Worldwatch Institure keep it in front of us. Soon the world may be keeping it in front of us or our children even when we don't want it to. I feel rather helpless about it. Knowing more about it, as with this book, is a first step, however.
Great and pertinent information.......2006-02-25
The State of the World Series has always been a source of well-documented research of our planetary path to sustainability. This yearly report contains valuable insight to many of today's more pressing environmental problems. In particular the 2006 edition has a chapter devoted to water issues, superbly written and documented by Sandra Postel one of the foremost voices on these matters. I also liked the chapter dedicated to the meat industry, right on time for the developing crisis on avian flu.

Invaluable Disney World Guide.......2007-05-20
My first experience with the Unofficial Guide was back in 1993, when I was 16 and my parents took our family of five to Disney World around the holidays. My mom had bought the Unofficial Guide then to plan virtually all of our events and to this day (14 years later), I still remember how easy it was to hit all the favorite rides with relatively short lines.
It was for that reason that I ordered the 2006 edition of the Guide when it came time to take my family of three to Disney World while I was home on leave from Iraq in April of 2006. I was pleased to learn that it not only covered Disney World, but the Universal (and other) parks as well.
The trick to getting the most out of the book is convincing everyone in your party to follow it! We spent the first day at Universal's Islands of Adventure and had no problems, whatsoever, hitting all the great rides (that our 4-year-old was tall enough for) with short lines. That is, until my wife decided to get spontaneous and took our son in line for the Pteranodon Flyers ride, which wasn't on the tear-out plan at all. This ride gave new meaning to "Tourist Trap" - they spent about 1 1/2 hours waiting in a very slow line for an anticlimatic 60-second ride. It was a "there's 90 minutes of my life I'll never get back" event. When we got back to the hotel that night, I looked up the Pteranodon Flyers ride in the book and found the description matched exactly what we experienced with warnings not to waste any time on it.
My wife was much more inclined to follow the Guide's advice for the rest of the trip, and as a result, it was an awesome vacation. Thank you Mr. Sehlinger!
this guide used to be easy.......2007-05-14
This guide used to be easy to read, and use. Now it seems like a confused overwritten GUIDE.
If you are only buying one guide... this is it!.......2007-03-09
I was very pleased with this guide. Due to an extremely low volume of visitors during our vacation, it was not necessary for us to use the touring plans. I was certainly prepared though! I read several guides before our trip and thought this was by far the most informative. If you are easily overwhelmed, this is NOT the book for you. The authors packed loads of info into one book. I was the star pupil on the shuttle bus when the driver gave us a quiz!
THIS IS THE ONE!!!.......2007-01-17
THIS IS THE ONE!!! DO NOT PLAN A DISNEY TRIP WITHOUT IT! The time and $ this book will save you will make its cost be totally irrelevant.
We started using our first version of this "Doing Disney Bible" about 9 years ago, when we first went to Disney. We have gone back to Disney five times since then, and have always purchase a revised edition of this same book! (Need I say more.) It will make your stay as pleasant as possible, given any time of year or condition that you may encounter. We purchase the revised edition each time, because, amazingly, so many things change at the parks, and therefore, so do their recommendations.
Due to their layout, It is so easy to pick and choose the information that is important to you. I WOULD NEVER WANT TO GO TO DISNEY WITHOUT THIS BOOK!
This book is a lifesaver!.......2007-01-10
We used this book religiously, following all its tips about how to see rides in the different parks. It also helped us decide which area to get a motel in, and what restaurants to eat at. When you only have a limited time to spend in each park, and especially when it's during the busy season, this is the book to use. It made our trip to Disney World fun, even when it was over 90 degrees out!
Book Description
Using extensive materials from both published and private sources, this concise text focuses on United States-Soviet diplomacy to explain the causes and consequences of the Cold War. It explores how the Cold War was shaped by domestic events in both the U.S. and the Soviet Union and presents a variety of other points of view on the conflict--Chinese, Latin American, European, and Vietnamese. The text includes both engaging anecdotes and quotes from primary sources to support key points and exemplify policies, and recent scholarship and materials from openings of the U.S., Soviet, and Chinese archives.

Very bad survey of cold war.......2007-07-03
I wanted to check a beginner's book on cold war and was VERY disappointed. I don't understand why this book had so many editions, since it's very weak : narration is poor, overtly liberal, America is responsible for the cold war. The whole book looks as it's still in the 70s, with those laughable revisionnist ideas, old maps and cartoons.
One sentence sums up the spirit perfectly : "[The Berlin Wall] was mute and bloody testimony to the policy of both East and West which, since 1945, had preferred a divided rather than a neutralized and united Germany". (p.225) No comment.
The chapters, despite the mention "updated" are not updated at all, Zubok and Pleshakov isn't even mentioned. After reading the first chapters, i throwed it to the can. Gonna check John Gaddis instead. Oh boy, they should put a sticker "liberal orientation" on books to save people's money !

More Disney Hype.......2007-03-25
Birnbaum seems to work as an agent for Disney, giving you fluff and hype for your money. This book seems to be little more than a brief encapsulation of the Disney World resort and park attractions, without the critical information, the good as well as the not so good, you really need in order to make intelligent choices about how and where you're going to spend your money on your next Disney vacation. Pretty pictures, though. A better choice for your money would be the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World by Bob Sehlinger.
Nice tool for Disney .......2007-03-21
This was a great book to help plan our disney vacation. Unless you are going for 2 weeks you really need to map out your days and this book was a great guide to show what was good for toddlers, teens, couples, etc.
A MUST for new Disney-goers.......2007-01-17
This book was incredibly helpful. I'd never been to DW, and the book saved us from common trip planning mistakes. It is very informative, easy to read, and I HIGHLY recommend it. It really lets you know what to expect and helps with planning your trip well. Take the book with you - you will refer to it often.
Great Disney Book.......2007-01-16
I have been able to visit Disney World more than three times in the past two years and have used this book before and during each visit. It is a great guide to the parks and resorts and just about all Disney has to offer. When it is time I will definitely be updating to the new version.
You need this if you want to enjoy Disney World.......2007-01-06
An absolute necessity for any Disney World excursion. There are several gotchas and hot tips that are a must know to fully enjoy yourselves in the world of mouse.
Customer Reviews:
This book is for those who have no clue about the subject whatsoever.......2007-01-11
Never buy this book! It is extremely short: 1940's-2000's period is covered on 2-3 pages. You will get nothing from it. Simply waaaayyy toooo short. Though practice exams are OK.
Bad.......2007-01-10
Questions are way off from the real thing, ineffective prep book, do not recommending buying it.
Avoid at all cost if you are taking world history.......2005-11-26
I used this prep book to prepare for SAT II World History
It proudly states that most part of the test is concentrated on European History.
Yes, it is true.
However, it basically does nothing to cover the rest part of the world.
And even for the European History, it just barely touches the surface that you get nothing out of it after the review chapter.
Compare the thickness of this book (which also has US History and two practice for US History) and other World History prep books.
It's way too thin physically, and in content.
Although other prep books may have too much extra information. However, too much is always better than too little.
I am not giving 1 star just because I haven't had chance to check out the US History section.

PassPorter Walt Disney World Resort.......2007-06-19
This book made my trip to Disney so easy and enjoyable. It gives you tons of valuable information... maps of each theme park; dining information (i.e. type of cuisine, approximate cost, atmosphere, if reservations are needed). Practically anything you could possibly want to know to help you prepare for your trip and even many things you wouldn't have thought to ask yourself.
Great Guide!.......2006-11-10
The subtitle sums it up supremely! Wish I had had a PassPorter 10 years ago when we did the "World" with children. I'll definitely purchase the appropriate edition for any future trips to WDW.
Our Family Review of the PassPorter.......2006-11-03
Very good quick reference guide to carry in backpack while doing Disney. Good way to keep vacation organized.
I actually give this book 10 stars...**********.......2006-08-28
This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone planning a trip to Walt Disney World. It is jam-packed full of all the important information you need to plan your trip. The book has an extensive list of all the WDW resorts including maps of the resort, ratings, cost, a blueprint of the room layout, and a million other little details. The book also has a wonderful list of all the WDW restaurants; including those in the parks and at each resort. The restaurant guide is extremely comprehenisve and helpful when making any advanced dinner reservations. Of course there is also a TON of information on each of the four parks; including comprehensive, easy to read and helpful maps, touring guides, time tables, etc. You name it - this book has it.
By far the coolest part for me the is wonderful passpockets. These groovey little yellow pockets hold all your important information before your trip (helps keep it all in one place!) and during your trip (great place to cram receipts so you know where they are!). The pockets allow for quick and easy access to important papers while keeping them protected.
All in all my best recommendation is just to buy the book and see for yourself. There are probably over 1,000 features I didn't mention in this review. I can say that you won't be disappointed!
I should add that the authors of this book also keep updating. The 2006 edition is better than those of previous years, and I can only see this as being an upward trend.
WDW Novices Rejoice!.......2006-08-21
As a novice in the realm of WDW visitors, I have been planning a trip to visit WDW for Halloween. I found this book to be a terrific guide. This edition of the book is spiral bound and has fold-out maps of each of the 4 parks and a review of each ride. Also invaluable are the guides to the restaurants (sit-down as well as counter service) as well as tips to help you get through the trip without killing your traveling companion out of frustration. The book is well written and lovingly researched by Disney vacationers. The spiral binding makes it easier to open and the packing list is invaluable. Anyone who wants to visit the Kingdom of the Mouse, this book will be quite helpful in getting the most enjoyment out of your travel budget.

Very Good Overall College Guidebook.......2006-07-21
Very good alternative to the Barrons and Princeton Review books. Great and useful rankings. Very relevant advice and supplemental features. Definitely the #1 college guide, but b/c there was no CD-ROM that I thought would help, I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.
4.5 Stars... the most complete "objective" college guide .......2006-07-05
There are many, many college search guides and books out there. The Princeton Review has a couple of good ones. But if you are at the very beginning of the process for your son or daughter (as I am currently with my daughter), you should absolutely take a look at this book.
"Ultimate College Guide (2006 Edition)", issued by US News & World Report, "the leader in college rankings", is a mammoth 1739 pager, which basically lists all colleges and universities alphbetically, state by state. This book is not a subjective evaluation on which schools are "the best", but rather a "just the facts, ma'm" type of book. It provides detailed information on everything from tuition and room/board costs, how many applied, were accepted and actually enrolled, what the average scholarship grant is, etc. etc. My daughter, who is starting her junior year when school resumes after the summer, has spent a lot of time flipping through this book (which she has not done with some of the other college guides we've gotten).
As to those rankings, if you think they don't matter to schools, think again. We recently did a campus visit and tour of Vanderbilt University. In the presentation, the Vandy rep highly touted the fact that Vandy's ranking in the last couple of years has risen from 21 to 18, and hoping to crack the top 15 within 3 to 5 years. We later checked it out in this book, and yup, there it is: ranked 18 among National Universities...
The new 2007 edition of this book comes out in October, and we'll probably check that out as well, just to get updated numbers on tuition and room/board expenses. Meanwhile, the 2006 edition will do. Highly recommended!
These Encyclopedia Guides are All Great.......2006-06-27
As someone who has been through the process, personally and for children and nieces and nephews etc, I have this advice: Get an encyclopedia guide for colleges. There are a few great ones and each has strengths over the others. But, basically each is good enough and complete enough where owning one will do the trick. Your choices are Fiske Guide to Colleges 2007 (Fiske Guide to Colleges), Best 361 Colleges, 2006 (College Admissions Guides) and this book. You must have one!!!!
Then, if you want to learn more about schools and the process of college -- and believe me it has drastically changed in even the most recent decade -- buy any one of the following: Colleges That Change Lives : 40 Schools You Should Know About Even If You're Not a Straight-A Student; A Is for Admission : The Insider's Guide to Getting into the Ivy League and Other Top Colleges (Paperback); The College Admissions Mystique (Paperback) and Pope's classic Looking beyond the Ivy League : Finding the College That's Right for You; Revised Edition (Paperback).
That list is all you need. Avoid the "How to Write an Essay that Gets You Into Harvard Even Though Your Grades and Scores Stink" books; avoid the "I Can Get Anybody In" books, avoid the "This is the Trick to Making Up for the Last 4 Years of Slovenly Laziness" books.
In the end, you will realize that you will constantly go back to the encyclopedia college guide as it is there where flashcard fast facts often accurately depict the social and other aspects of the school which "make or break" your child's decision in applying to that school.
If you choose this encyclopedia -- it will be money well spent. It has as many if not more details than the others and offers some insights into the character of the schools: something which the other encyclopedia college guides also provide -- but in a different manner.
college.......2005-10-28
Good book. Almost too much information. Can be confusing if your just searching for a college without prior direction
Good Reference Source.......2005-10-21
Overall, this is a good college "almanac" filled with facts and figures about every college and university in the nation. Be forewarned: It won't tell you much about how to succeed in college once you actually get there, but it's a solid choice for students still trying to decide where they want to go. Once you do decide, I recommend the book "How to Ace Your Way Through College and Still Have a Life" by David Kennedy. The book is loaded with tricks and tips to scoring A's in college.

The crispness and clarity of the images has been greatly enhanced by the new stock used to print the catalogue pages. More than 56,000 value changes are recorded in Volume 1. That is the greatest number of value changes in one volume since the catalogue went to six volumes more than nine years ago. Scott 2006 Sandard Postage Stamp Catalogue, Vol 1.......2007-01-10
I have been using Scott's stamp catalogue to organize a large collection of postage stamps collected over 50 years. This purchase represents an update of this catalogue for me. It also is the first time I have secured the item in disk form and will be an adjustment in the way I use the item. The catalogue allows me to organize and value (at least in a crude way) my stamp collecion. In the brief time I have used the new format, I like the fact that I can look at the pictures and text in very large format or if I am searching for something I can cover a lot using the zoom format.
