Book Description

Even if you've never attended a wedding in the South, you'll find laughter in the pages of this deliciously entertaining slice of Southern life and love, complete with recipes, advice, and a huge dose of that famous charm"In the Mississippi Delta, funerals bring out the best in people, while weddings, which are supposed to be happy occasions, bring out the worst." So say Gayden Metcalfe and Charlotte Hays, authors of the bestseller Being Dead Is No Excuse: The Official Southern Ladies' Guide to Hosting the Perfect Funeral, who turn their keen eyes and sharp wit from the end of the life cycle to the all-important midpoint. For anyone planning, participating in, or attending a wedding (Southern or not), this book will amuse, entertain, and provide advice for marital bliss, including:--It's OK to peek at an etiquette book, but if you rely too heavily on it, people will think that you are not fully acquainted with what is right and wrong. --Anything that was not done in the past doesn't need to be done now -- consider this before ordering a groom's cake, especially one featuring a fishing-tackle or golfing theme.

5 out of 5 stars Not your typical wedding book . . ........2007-10-01

I love this book! It captures the frantic activities of all involved with such
humor that you hope one of your over-age daughters will soon be headed for the altar! It definitely lives up to the title.

5 out of 5 stars Truth Can Be So Funny.......2007-05-31

Wonderfully witty - way too tame a term! - but oh, so realistic book about weddings, interspersed with recipes and tales of weddings past. I loved it and am recommending it to all my southern and not so southern friends and relatives.

4 out of 5 stars The Wedding Book.......2007-05-17

It was very good but not quite as good as their first book.

4 out of 5 stars good book & recipes- 'being dead' much funnier.......2007-05-16

I am from the South and the funeral book had me laughing so hard i - liketa died crying. this one is good and funny but not nearly as hilarious as the first one. I have childhood memories full of the green punch so that is a great addition. The recipes look good and there seems to be extra ones including alcohol, which is probably more appropriate.

I loved how they added the author's pictures in the back. The one lady-Gayden definitely looks like she is a woman from the South. However, the other, Charlotte, definitely looks as though she has left the South, as well as forgeting her cosmetic case behind. Like myself, when you leave and live somewhere else for awhile (in the north), the pressure is off to keep yourself looking well groomed and with at least SOME makeup. Bare-faced does not look good on anyone and at least makeup protects the skin from wrinkles because of the sun's damage. If still living in the South, her friends would ask her, 'Are you OK!?' knowing she must be sick or depressed in order to be seen with no makeup and her hair looking like that. Maybe that should be their next book; the pressure of appearance, shaving your legs, and makeup in the South. I'd be happy to help them out.

I was excited to see they had another book, but it is not nearly as hilarious as the first. It seems more tamed, or influenced by someone else's editing, a humorless northerner perhaps. Still a good book with good to have recipes on hand. rms

4 out of 5 stars I keep it in my Kitchen :).......2007-05-12

There are some wonderful recipes in these books...I have this one and the one about the funerals. They are kept with my cookbooks because that is pretty much what they are. Reminds me of Justin Wilsons' cookbooks.

5 out of 5 stars Laughter.......2007-10-08

I laughed out loud reading this book, and I could relate to some of the dynamics having worked in a church kitchen. Even a Yankee can enjoy this concoction of recipes and humor. It reminded me of my charming friend in Louisiana whose southern conversation flows from her mouth like cream. This book makes a great gift for ladies!

5 out of 5 stars A True Gem for Those of Us Who Live It !.......2007-09-06

Gayden's book is beyond a cookbook---it brings to mind that culture that we lived and actually are still living in the South. A Yankee friend said she just "couldn't relate" to the book. Poor thing. I guess it just takes a Southern lady of a "certain age" to fully appreciate the authenticity of Gayden Metcalfe's descriptions of our funeral protocol!

Even when reading it all alone, I laughed right out loud on nearly every page at not only Gayden's wit, but her ability to let us see the funny side (and caring side) of our funerals and the food solace we provide before and after. It captures those customs perfectly. And, just as she said, I keep the ingredients of a casserole in my pantry at all times, just in case of a neighbor's sudden death, and my funeral suit hangs in the closet and my pearls at the top of my jewelry chest, at the ready.

I always sent my sons to church in suits and ties anyway, but I did this partly so they too would be ready for a funeral at the drop of a hat. More than once, we'd have to outfit a cousin because his mother didn't understand this, bless her heart.

Gayden's recipes are grand, really dressed up versions of our "funeral food." No Cheese Wiz is included, thank goodness.

I particulary laughed at this truth: After the cemetery part of the funeral, in the car on the way to the family home for the funeral meal, we can speak ill of the dead one quite vigorously. But once we get in the driveway of the bereaved, we straighten up and speak only of the great loss to the community his death has caused, even though he had been a rip-roaring scoundrel.

And even in the privacy of our car, understand that each criticism of the dead one had been prefaced with "Bless his heart. . ."

A Southern lady can give the most scathing statement as long as she begins with "Bless her heart. . ." An example, "Bless her heart, she's ugly as homemade soap and her children are such a disappointment. They all take after her grand-daddy on her mother's side, and bless his heart, I wouldn't pour ice tea on that rascal if he was on fire." Of course, we wouldn't do that at the family home after the funeral, only in the car on the way to it.

And we could get away with saying that to her third cousin once removed over the bridge table, but we wouldn't say it to her face. But we could say to her: "Bless your heart, that husband of yours has caused you such grief, with his runnin' around and all. I just wish you'd married Joe Bob, who made a dentist. I know your daddy wanted you to, but, Lord knows, you did the best you could at the time, you bein' pregnant and all."

3 out of 5 stars If you like cookbooks..........2007-08-13

Started off funny and was loving it..then it became pretty mundane and nothing but recipes. Some look pretty good and worth a try. But I don't think this one is as funny as it could have been with less recipes and more funny stories.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Book for Any Southern Belle!.......2007-07-27

I couldn't stop reading Metcalf's humorous and accurate descriptions of southern traditions... As soon as I finished my copy I purchased copies for all my fellow "belles" to read and all have been delighted with the hysterical accounts of southern funeral protocal as well as the delicious recipes! Also check out Metcalf's wedding version "If Lilli Beth Don't Catch That Bouquet Somebody's Gonna Die"- equally as funny and a great gift for any mother-of-the-bride!

5 out of 5 stars Girls raised in the south.......2007-07-20

I laughed and laughed with this book. One of the few books I have read several times. Read it out loud with a group of my friends and they were belly laughing. People from other parts of the country may not understand all the regional descriptions. But a must for girls raised in the south.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars A critically important addition to school district and community library Educational Laws & Guidelines reference shelves.......2007-06-10

Now in a newly updated and significantly expanded second edition, "Wrightslaw: Special Education Law" provides parents, educators, child service advocates, and family attorneys with a clear and superbly organized introduction to the federal laws affecting the education of children with disabilities. An invaluable guide to special education rights and responsibilities, co-authors Pete Wright (who has represented children with disabilities for more than 30 years including appearing before the U. S. Supreme Court in 'Florence County School District IV v. Shannon Carter, 510 U.S. 7 - 1993 in which he won a landmark victory for all children with disabilities) and Pam Wright (a psychotherapist who has worked with children since the 1970s and is the Editor of 'The Special ed Advocate' newsletter), "Wrightslaw: Special Education Law" addresses the issues of a child's right to a free and appropriate education; individualized education programs, IEP teams, transition and progress; evaluations, re-evaluations, consent and independent educational evaluations; eligibility and placement decisions; least restrictive environment, mainstreaming and inclusion; research based instruction, discrepancy formulas and response to intervention; discipline, suspensions and expulsions; safeguards; mediation, confidentiality, new procedures and timelines for due process hearings. A critically important addition to school district and community library Educational Laws & Guidelines reference shelves, "Wrightslaw: Special Education Law" should be considered 'must reading' for anyone (but most especially by parents and school authorities) charged with the responsibility for educating a disabled child regardless of the nature or degree of the disability.

5 out of 5 stars Wrightslaw: Special Education Law, 2nd Edition - wins EP Symbol of Excellent.......2007-02-15

It is the night before Jessica's first big IEP Team meeting and her parents are scrambling to find something - ANYTHING - that can help them prepare for the meeting. Try Wrightslaw. Sally's advocate is packing her briefcase as she heads out the door for the IEP Team meeting. She checks for her most critical resource. Wrightslaw. Susan, a school district attorney, checks her bag before heading off to her next meeting. Yup. Wrightslaw. Is there no one who hasn't heard of Wrightslaw?

Actually, we are sure that many readers have not, so today we review two new books from Wrightslaw. Both are second editions of books Pam and Pete Wright first released several years ago. The Wrights have updated both books to reflect the 2004 changes to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act [IDEA] and its implementing regulations. We use both books in our regular course of business and highly recommend them to parents, educators, advocates, attorneys and anyone else who has a need for quick but comprehensive manuals on special education law.

Wrightslaw: Special Education Law, 2nd Edition [Wrightslaw] is a wonderful and ready resource for all who want to be able to find and then quote chapter and verse of IDEA law and regulations. The book includes the complete text of all four parts of IDEA as enacted in December, 2004. Wrightslaw also contains the complete implementing regulations for IDEA that became effective in August, 2006. These texts alone are worth the cost of the book.

But Wrightslaw does not stop with the IDEA statute and its implementing regulations. Wrightslaw also includes the complete text of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act [FERPA]; the text to Section 504 [the Rehabilitation Act of 1973]; and the text of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. These inclusions ensure that the Wrightslaw user always has the key educational laws right at her fingertips at a moment's need. We have cited our Wrightslaw at IEP Team meetings, due process hearings, client meetings and the like.

Pam and Pete Wright make Wrightslaw even more valuable by including commentary on how to apply the included laws to typical special education circumstances. They talk about the No Child Left Behind Act and show how it fits into the special education law scheme. They cite and include the text of the major court cases that have shaped how special education law should be interpreted and implemented. And they have included a glossary of special education terms and acronyms with a user-friendly index.

We regard Wrightslaw as an essential resource in our practice. We believe the book should be part of every parent's [and educator's, advocate's, attorney's] special education library because of its rich and vital contents.

We also heartily recommend Pam and Pete's second book, Wrightslaw: From Emotions to Advocacy, 2nd Edition. The Wrights call this book "The Special Education Survival Guide." And well it is. The Wrights designed this book primarily for parents who need a one-stop how-to resource that will teach them to be strong and effective advocates for their children.

We cannot say enough about the contents and organization of this book. The Wrights have divided it into five sections. Section One helps parents to organize their thoughts and ideas, creating a mindset for them in their undertaking as advocates for their child. Section Two highlights the practice of advocacy, outlines the players, identifies common traps and provides strategies for resolving conflicts and managing crises. Section Three gives parents nuts and bolts information needed to make parents experts on all facets of their child's education; from file organization to testing to writing strong IEP's. Section Four walks parents through the broad principles found in IDEA's major provisions, touching on Section 504 and the No Child Left Behind Act. Finally, Section Five shows the now-well prepared parent how to advocate in the trenches: at the IEP Team meeting, collecting and documenting information; and managing and winning disputes.

We like From Emotions to Advocacy because it is loaded with sage advice that most parents will find easy to understand and apply. We especially like that the Wrights pull no punches in telling parents what they are in for as their child's advocates. Their "Rules of Adverse Assumptions," discussed in Chapter 21, are particularly powerful and to the point - don't expect others, especially educators, to see things your way. Plan and prepare to win your case on your own, using your own wits and resources. They then show you how.

Through Wrightslaw and From Emotions to Advocacy Pete and Pam Wright have provided a great service to parents, educators, advocates and attorneys, providing them with hands-on resources that pack power to the punch. We proudly award both books the EP Symbol of Excellence.

Book Description

This new edition of Perfect Daughters, a pivotal book in the ACoA movement, identifies what differentiates the adult daughters of alcoholics from other women. When this groundbreaking book first appeared over ten years ago, Dr. Ackerman identified behavior patterns shared by daughters of alcoholics. Adult daughters of alcoholics-"perfect daughters" -operate from a base of harsh and limiting views of themselves and the world. Having learned that they must function perfectly in order to avoid unpleasant situations, these women often assume responsibility for the failures of others. They are drawn to chemically dependent men and are more likely to become addicted themselves. More than just a text that identifies these behavior patterns, this book collects the thoughts, feelings and experiences of twelve hundred perfect daughters, offering readers an opportunity to explore their own life's dynamics and thereby heal and grow. This edition contains updated information throughout the text, and completely new material, including chapters on eating disorders and abuse letters from perfect daughters in various stages of recovery, and helpful, affirming suggestions from Dr. Ackerman at the end of every chapter. This book is essential for every one who found validation, hope, courage and support in the pages of the original Perfect Daughters, as well as new readers and every therapist who confronts these issues. Also includes: a comprehensive reference section and complete index.

5 out of 5 stars Wake Up Call!.......2006-11-04

I bought this book through a suggestion from a co-worker. When I received it at work in the mail, I opened the cover, checked out the chapters and turned to one in particular. I read only half the page and broke down crying. The truth is written in these pages. I have given a copy of this book to my sister. I recommend that if you are an adult daughter of an alcoholic parent, that you read this book. It ISN'T your fault, you are a valuable human being and it's about time that YOU take charge of your life. Get strong, face the truth, conquer your fears, find peace within yourself. No one says it's not going to hurt. Facing ourselves is the hardest part. Getting well is the reward. I can let go of the past and learn from it or I could go on holding a grudge. Good-bye Mom, sorry you were so sick from alcoholism. Hello new life, I am reborn. I am a wonderful human being. Thanks to this book I can say these things. It will take time to heal, but I have a new start because my eyes have been opened and I don't want to make the choices I've made in the past. I don't have to make those choices anymore, I am set free from the truth of my "brainwashing" of childhood.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Daughters.......2006-02-24

This book was so helpful with it's insight into the experience of having an alcoholic parent. It is written well, easy to follow and answers questions you didn't even know you had. I highly recommend this book to anyone, but especially to people like myself who are at the beginning of their quest for the truth and don't want to read a book that feels too clinical and complicated.

1 out of 5 stars A cheesy way to earn a living.......2006-02-21

Having recently come to understand the role of my alcoholic parents' habits in my development as an adult, I have been seeking every possible source for information and strategies for dealing with my own behavior problems. I have found some wonderful sources -- Janet Woititz' books, for example. I had high hopes for this book, Perfect Daughters since I am such a freak but what I got was a book written in large print, at a level merely approaching 6th grade, that is 40% this man's clients' letters. His analysis is facile and offers nothing new. Yes, we all feel this way; yes we all share certain qualities, but anyone who's done only minimal research will discover this very soon. This book offers nothing new. I feel ripped off by the book's "promises", insulted by the writers' tone and plethora of marginally relevant quotations clearly pasted from quotes.com. Don't buy this book; check it out of the library and get what good you can from it. There is some there, but not $10 worth.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Daughter.......2004-01-17

I am a child of an alcoholic Mother. I try very hard to avoid books that talk about adult children of Alcoholics becuase they usually make things sound very over technical and impersonal. I am not a very emotional person and I know the decisions I make in my life are because of my families alcoholic issues. However, this was a book that was not very hard to read and I would highly recoomend it. After reading the very first story and bawling my eyes out about that little family princess who never understood and was always trying to make it okay, I knew the book was for me to read. That's ME!!! That's ME!!! I kept saying over and over. Ironically I highlighted every sentence and passage that had to do with my childhood and feelings in the book and I believe I ended up with 90% of it highlighted. I couldn't help to think that someone had a hidden journal on my heart and feelings growing up. If only that person had stepped in when I was young what a difference it would have made. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!

5 out of 5 stars An epiphany of understanding!.......2002-07-23

While my family was not one of staggering drunks and physical or overt verbal abuse, this books sheds light on why I feel the way that I do! It's easy to get turned off at first by the overt drunks experiences of many of the people's stories presented here if you yourself didn't experience that. The MOST valuable part of the book is a look at different personality traits that you may have developed during your not-so-normal childhood. This books points out the positive things that ACoA's have learned from their experiences and how to use those to our greatest advantage, while understanding and working on some of the traits we developed that are not useful to us as adults. I highly recommend this book - and that you read it several times!

Baking bread is mysterious enough. But creating truly great pizza--the transformation of next to nothing into something extraordinary--is downright alchemical. It is for no small reason that there are distinct words in Italian for those disciples of these mystic arts who bake pizza and focaccia, pizzaiolo and focacciaiolo. Peter Reinhart, he who gave us Brother Juniper's Bread Book and the multi-award winning The Bread Baker's Apprentice, takes the reader of American Pie: My Search for the Perfect Pizza right into the heart of the matter.

Reinhart begins his inquiry into pizza with his baseline palate memory for what a great pizza should be. As a teenager he had worked in a pizzeria, Mama's, and instinctively knew this pie to be the best. Returning as an adult years later, he discovered otherwise. Had he changed, or had the pizza changed? Both, it happened, were true.

So what is the nature of perfection, and where do you go to find it? In the case of Peter Reinhart, this journey includes travels through Italy and across the US. This is Part One of the book, called The Hunt. It's not the most enlivening travel writing, which would have helped elevate the insights into the nature of great pizza and the people who make it happen. But it's only a third of the entire package. The best is yet to come. In Part Two: The Recipes, Reinhart comes entirely into his own. Here is the master at work. Chapters include "The Family of Doughs", "Sauces and Specialty Toppings," and "The Pizzas." Reinhart gives you the building blocks, no matter what your kitchen, tools, and oven might be like. And then he unfolds the roadmap--pizzas from the strictly classical to the strictly whimsical.

Work diligently with American Pie and in time you will be able to call yourself, without hesitation or rising color, pizzaiolo and focacciaiolo. --Schuyler Ingle

Book Description

In the course of his extraordinary career as a baker, culinary instructor, and author, Peter Reinhart has dedicated himself to exploring the passions and techniques behind the great breads of the world. His most recent pursuit has been pizza—a seemingly simple food that has been hotly debated since Italian immigrants brought it to America more than a century ago. Allegiances run from the general (Chicago- versus New York-style, Neapolitan versus Sicilian) to the particular (Pepe's versus Sally's, Gino's East versus Pizzeria Uno), and newfangled versions like sushi pizza are extending the frontier. In AMERICAN PIE, Reinhart follows the pizza trail from Italy to the States, capturing the stories behind the greatest artisanal pizzas of the Old World and the New.

Beginning his journey in Genoa, Reinhart scours the Italian countryside in search of the fabled focaccia col formaggio di Recco. After a stop in Florence for pizza vesuvio, with its black truffles and molten cheese, Peter heads to Rome to sample the famed seven-foot-long pizza bianca, and then Naples for the archetypal pizza napoletana. Back in America, the hunt for authentic pizza begins in the unlikely locale of Phoenix, Arizona, where Chris Bianco of Pizzeria Bianco has convinced many that his pie is the best in the country. Sardinian pizza in Dallas; the pizza epicenter of New Haven; grilled pizza in Providence; the deep-dish pies of Chicago; Yugoslavian pogacha in Bellevue, Washington—these are just a few of the stops on Reinhart's epic tour.

Reinhart then returns to the kitchen, where he gives a master class on pizza-making techniques and provides his interpretations of the most memorable pizzas from his journey. His insatiable curiosity—and appetite—and gift for storytelling make this a must-have book for the avid cook, as well as a great read for the armchair pizzaiolo.

4 out of 5 stars A helpful slice of information, especially on dough making.......2007-09-26

I found this to be a fairly serviceable treatise on the topic of pizza. The author, a baking instructor, had a longstanding interest in global pizza hunting, and always made it a point to sample the local pies wherever he traveled. Eventually, he got around to putting it all into book form, wherein he takes the reader on a condensed recap of his far ranging pizza (and foccacia) travels, from Philadelphia, to Texas, to NYC, to New Haven, to Italy, to California, to Chicago, etc., in his quest for perfect pizza.

The author then provides the reader with a basic dough recipe covering each of the (as he classifies them) major types of pizza: Napoletana, Roman, Neo-Neapolitan, New York-Style, Pizza Americana, San Francisco Sourdough Style, Grilled Pizza dough, Chicago Deep-Dish, Sardinian, etc. He then goes on to provide some basic tips for sauce, cheese, toppings, and some philosophical guidelines to help achieve balance in a given recipe.

I already knew most of what little information he provided about sauce and cheese and toppings - the primary focus in this book is primarily on dough making & handling, followed by baking methods, and there's some very helpful information here for amateur home cooks who've always wanted to learn the basics of home pizza making, either in a pan, atop a pizza stone or with a full fledged hearth insert.

I've been making pizza at home for years, and even I learned a few helpful tweaks to my technique ... and I've added a few famous pizza establishments to visit to my life itinerary.

My Nits ? I have a few.

1) IMNSHO, dusting as peel with cornmeal before using it to slide a pie into a home oven is just not practical technique for most home cooks, because it makes a mess of one's oven. The cornmeal and/or flour scorches, and causes one's kitchen (unless you're fortunate enough to have a powerful exhaust system) to reek of scorched flour and/or cornmeal. That's a technique intended exclusively for commercial pizza ovens that are easily and frequently swept out, and where keeping costs low is the golden rule. Try sweeping out a home oven, and you'll not only make a mess of your floor, but probably set your broom ablaze on the electric heating elements or gas burner. Personally, I've found that a much easier and cleaner technique for home cooks to use is to assemble the pizza on parchment paper, and bake it directly on a well heated pizza stone. Ignore the author's direction to remove the parchment after a few minutes - doing so is unnecessary, and only serves to cause your oven to lose 100F+ of precious heat, when it needs it the most. The crust doesn't come out quite as crispy after the initial baking, but if you want a crispier crust, it's a simple matter to keep the oven hot a little while longer, and rebake slices for 2-3 mins to order ... the crusts crisp up very nicely upon rebaking.

2) I'd have liked to have seen a lot more photos. This book only has a precious few of them, all of them black and white, and all of them of decidedly poor quality and exposure. In fact, the photography is downright inept.

3) I think the author aimed a little low in this book, with regards to heft. He could have, and IMO should have, squeezed more material into this book. To me, it read too quickly, and when I'd finished it later the same day, I felt it was a bit thinnish ... I wanted more regions covered, more recipes, and a lot more photos (esp competent ones).

4) I think the author could have included a 'putting it all together' chapter, where he could layout the nuances of how a home cook (i.e., most of the readership) could do a pracitcal in-home pizza party for, say 20+ people ... with nesting rising pans, pre-cut parchment, a cooling rack with screens, mis en place, and how to pre-bake and re-heat in a party settings, and how to store the equipment when not in use. Instead, the author just concludes with his list of dough recipes, and then assortment of topping combos to try.

Other than thhose 4 nits, this book is recommended. Add a point/star if you've always wanted to try making your own pizza from scratch, and this book succeeds in helping you take the plunge, or if the book inspires you to take your existing pizza dough technique to a new level (as it did for me).

Basic homemade pizza is fairly easy, and you can always strive incrementally for new levels of perfection.

4 out of 5 stars Hits the spot.......2007-06-01

I have been making pizzas for twenty years, always searching for improvements. Having no formal training in dough preparation, this book seemed to be the answer. Peter's writing is easy to read, with interesting experiences in Italy matched with excellent dough recipes and his take on the pizzas he and his fellow hunters experienced.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource on pizza.......2007-03-17

This book is divided into two equally interesting and useful sections. The first is Reinhart's quest for the perfect pizza. He discusses in detail his culinary experiences both in the US and abroad.

The second section is recipes. He has at least 5 recipes for crusts, many of which are very good. The crust recipe he recommends for frozen pizza is actually one of my favorites (prepared without freezing). The section on toppings is also great. He outlines some new ideas for pizza (at least new to me) and gives his perspective on more traditional recipes. For example, he suggests that it is not necessary to cook pizza sauce as the high oven temperature will make it more dense during the baking process. This advice has saved me time and results in a superior sauce. His pizza with red onion, pecorino, and pistachios has become one of our favorites.

Definitely a worth-while book. Not overly technical, but it does provide extremely useful tips for a successful pizza-making experience.

5 out of 5 stars inspiration in a delicious read.......2007-01-15

as a culinary professional, i found this book inspirational and informative. i have sucessfully implemented some of the recipes and many of the ideas in the book in my day to day prep as well as staff meals. everyone appreciates a good slice of pie, and this book will show you how to make it in your own kitchen, professional or not...

5 out of 5 stars The Most Entertaining Cookbook I've Ever Used.......2007-01-05

This book will help you cure any pizza dissapointment you may be suffering from. Peter Reinhart starts off with the story of his quest for the perfect pizza. In doing so, he takes us to sites of the pizza's origins in Italy where he cooks along side chefs in little pizzarias. Then Reinhart tracks the migration of pizza to America, where we learn about the contributions of New York and New Haven, CT, and then on to more recent contributions in other parts of the U.S. The second half of the book treats us to a variety of incredible and authentic recipies for pizza dough, sauce, and everything on top. Armed with this book I have held several pizza parties in my home and wowed many a guest with pizza much better than I can find in about 90% of the pizzarias around. And when they point to me for compliments, I point to the book that taught me everything.

This book would be cool if you had to plan different types of parties. There were only about 2 ideas we picked for our wedding. A lot of the ideas are kind of cheesey. They look very homemade. But there are good ideas in this for kids parties. Just my opinion! Good luck to everyone getting married!!

Book Description

I Told You I Wasn't Perfect begins on the night of March 20, 1992, when Denny McLain and his wife, Sharon, received the shocking news of their daughter's death. The book moves on from there, recounting McLain's loveless childhood and home life in working-class Chicago before his whirlwind marriage at age 19 and his meteoric rise to baseball superstardom. But the success was short-lived, as McLain found himself out of baseball and headed to prison after winning both the Cy Young and MVP awards in 1968.

Few characters soar to such dizzying heights and then plunge to the depths of despair like McLain did. But it is his ability to finally reflect on his mistakes and self-indulgences that makes his story especially compelling.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars DENNY McLAIN's THIRD BOOK.......2007-08-13

As a lifelong and terribly-devout Tiger fan, I give this a five-star rating.

But, for the general baseball public, a two is about it.

The book is not poorly written. Eli Zaret committed McLain's story into written form. It's not a great story.

It should be. The book reads mostly like Zaret spent a lot of time in the sports clipping "morgue" of the Detroit News and Free Press, and wrote down game notes and events. That part of the book is dry and not well fleshed out.

If you think about a man who had the world by the tail in 1968, and by 1972 was a total has-been at age 28, then ended up with TWO large prison sentences in the following two decades, you've got the genesis for a world-class book and movie. If so, it's just not here.

The print is large, and if you can't read this in a couple of hours, you aren't trying.

Then again, as a Tiger fan, I enjoyed the stories from inside the clubhouse on what Detroit fans of a certain age regard as a great baseball assemblage. McLain's take on current announcer and then-catcher Jim Price is interesting. He bashes Al Kaline, not someone that the local sporting press has dissed since 1965.

But there was so much more baseball-related information that could have been and should have been recalled and written. The endless stories about prison life - yes, Denny, we understand it was dehumanizing and hard. That's why we put you there.

4 out of 5 stars Denny McClain.......2007-07-12

It was most interesting to realize once again that no matter how high a star athlete rises in life, he or she suffer human frailties as everyday people. Denny McClain is a fine example. Little did I know that ,during my growing up years when Denny was one of my heroes, his life was unravelling off the field.

5 out of 5 stars RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "FROM 31 WINS, TO SUSPENSION FOR GAMBLING, TO FEDERAL PRISON!".......2007-06-11

I am a sports fanatic, and have read "literally" hundreds of sports books over the last decade or so. This autobiography has much more in it than a normal sports fan would expect. Sure, it has his baseball history, which shows him as perhaps the first "modern day", totally spoiled, self-possessed, spoiled brat, baseball star, who took advantage of the media's growing fascination with spoiled, rich ballplayers. He admittedly let his mouth run wild as his fame grew. Alienating, not only his teammates, but also, all "old school" players, executives, and fans. (Me!)

The beginning of the book, which traces his abusive childhood, up to his making the major leagues, leads us to the information that I already knew and expected: The last player to win 30 games in a season, (31 in 1968), the youngest player in major league history (At that time.) to win 100 games, (25 years old.) being suspended from baseball for gambling. Interesting, but old ground. Here is where his trouble really begins, and it seems like it takes forever, for Denny to realize he's the problem, not everyone else.

Here's where this book became absolutely fascinating to me, and became way more than your every day baseball book! When Denny went to federal prison, he describes in agonizing, claustrophobic, detail, what it's really like to be in federal prison, not a country club prison. What I tell you next is the absolute truth! A couple of times while I was engrossed in the portions of the book of what he went through, in his tiny, cramped cell, I actually got out a tape measure twice, and measured the size of my bed, to compare it to the cell he was in. To me this book is much more than a baseball book, it is also a "scared-straight" story. This is a story of success and arrogance gone astray. Denny went from 31 wins in a season and back to back Cy Young Awards, to Federal Prison, sharing a cell block with Gotti Jr., and innumerable de-humanizing body searches. I not only recommend this book highly; I feel it should be mandatory reading for every rookie entering the Major Leagues!

4 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2007-05-08

Good read - lots of great stories. I think there's "a little Denny Mclain" in all of us. I recommend it for all sports fans.

3 out of 5 stars An Ego Second to none.......2007-04-03

Why Eli Zaret would have taken the time to waste on such a written piece of pap is beyond me. Showing little or no remorse for his own actions, Denny McLain one more time shows why he went from riches to rags and back again in such a swift movement. This is a story of sadness and ego, please do not get me wrong.

The loss of a daughter to what is tantamount to murder would be enough to drive most people over the edge. But, in McClain's case, his losing out on the pension funds that hurt so many was like deja vu all over again. I am saddened for the entire McLain family that it has had to go through the sick triumphs and losses of Denny himself, who has shown little or no remorse over and over again for his ill-conceived actions.

A story that should never have been written.

Book Description

Most people would love to have 20/20 hindsight on their careers. In Smart Moves for Liberal Arts Grads, college career experts Sheila Curran and Suzanne Greenwald have assembled the next best thing: the collective wisdom of a diverse and inspiring cast of success stories—twenty-three liberal arts graduates who have gone on to all manner of fascinating and satisfying professions. The authors have combined lessons from the stories with their own hands-on experience with thousands of students and graduates to outline a framework for finding a perfect career.

What makes Smart Moves different is that it provides essential career advice while being fun to read. Readers will be struck by the frankness of the biographies of real graduates whose careers have taken twists and turns. Todd turned his passion into a living as the founder and CEO of several small businesses and a professional cellist; Thad's path took him from English major to a dream job in the front office of a major league baseball team; and a subway ride helped Sharon speed her intended career leap from a luxury department store to journalism. What binds them together is that they have all made smart moves on the way to career success—both during their liberal arts education and in the real world.

Smart Moves not only champions the value of a liberal arts education, it also embraces the complexity of careers, and the notion that many different factors contribute to success: education, experience, attitude, personal characteristics, and a good dose of luck. Smart Moves is an inspiration to all those who are seeking proven strategies to follow their passion—no matter what their age.

The quarter million liberal arts students who receive diplomas each year will truly benefit from the insights of Smart Moves. But this book is equally helpful for high school students (and their guidance counselors) looking at colleges, for graduates still looking for their life's work, and for parents who want to understand career realities for their children.

An innovative career guide for our stressful, fast-paced world, Smart Moves for Liberal Arts Grads illuminates valuable career lessons with sharp advice and an unparalleled framework for success.

5 out of 5 stars The Whole Family Loved It.......2007-10-01

As a sophomore in college, I'm almost to the point of entering the "real world." But instead of feeling unprepared and anxious about this process, I am actually looking forward to it. This is entirely due to Smart Moves, and I cannot even begin to emphasize how much this book has already helped me - even though I'm still 2 1/2 years from graduation!
What really makes this book a pleasure to read is it's format. At the beginning are extraordinarly helpful pieces of advice on what to do in and once you graduate from college. Next, the book goes on to provide real-world examples of people who are enjoying their careers in just about every major field. Smart Moves chronicles their stories while not only including their successes, but their mistakes as well.
At home, my mom and my 17 year old brother looked through the book while it was laying down on the coffee table. They both loved it. Here is what my mom had to say:

"Your purpose in life is not to find yourself...it is to create yourself."
My son, a student at Duke University, received this book from the University the summer between his freshman and sophomore years. He asked me to read it, and I was delighted to find it offered, through biographical examples, some truisms that we had been trying to explain to him.

1. Follow your passion; your happiness and enthusiasm will attract the money you need to survive.
2. Be willing to work hard.
3. It doesn't always matter what you major in, there is a good chance you will change careers several times in your life.
4. Every job you have will teach you something about yourself and give you the experience to make yourself available for the next opportunity.
5. Remain open and flexible.
6. Remain curious and research-oriented.
7. Use your summers between school years to take internships or volunteer in the areas of your interest.
8. Explore the career counseling center early during your undergraduate years.

I felt the lively and entertaining writing style of the authors, Sheila Curran and Suzanne Greenwald, made this book a fun and informative read for both undergraduate students and their families.

Once again, I'd recommend Smart Moves to anyone who has an open mind!

5 out of 5 stars A necessary read for every liberal arts grad..........2007-09-11

A refreshing and timely read for every recent college graduate. Curran helps job-seekers (and their parents!) understand the challenges - sychological, cultural & socio-economic - facing every graduating liberal arts major. Her years of experience counseling the best and brightest of the country's youth has taught her a simple truth - happiness is in doing what you love to do.

What's so fascinating is the complete relevance it has to the day-to-day decisions that my 22-30 year-old peers are making every day. I can't tell you how many times I have felt compelled to share the "Smartest Moves" chapter with colleagues who find themselves "disenchanted,"
"disengaged," or otherwise, with their current career path.

Every college graduate should read this book - and so should their parents.

5 out of 5 stars Truly an eye-opener.......2007-09-04

A college sophomore at Duke University, NC, I received a copy of 'Smart Moves' over the summer, at a time when I was extremely confused over which major I should choose, which career path I should follow etc. That was, until I received this book.
Through the stories of 23 other students, all ranging in a wide variety of careers and fields, I have realized that the next 3 years of my life will be about finding out what my passions are and where my interests for the future lie, rather than about working my way towards a preordained career goal on a predetermined path which I might regret later on in life. Several of my course selections and internship plans are now being reinforced after reading this book.
Smart moves has been a really useful eye-opener and myth buster for me, and I highly recommended to all students in liberal arts colleges, regardless of whether they were in a similar position as I was in or not. Read this book, and you would have made your first of many smart moves.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for parents and students.......2007-03-29

Smart Moves provides intersting and useful advice for students as they seek to make the most out of their college experience and determine the right post-college pursuit. The book emphasizes its applicability to both parents and students by having two forewards, one written for each group.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading For My Students.......2007-03-16

Smart Moves is a fantastic resource, which I recommend to all my students, especially to the ones who approach me bewildered and anxious about internship, job, career, life mission issues. I worry about the official and unofficial messages they are receiving from a variety of sources inside and outside the university (e.g., advisors, peers, parents, recruiters, employers).

I frequently lend out my two copies of Smart Moves, and believe it should be required reading for any student seriously considering career issues.

Thanks for writing it!

Book Description

Stephen Baldwin explains why he compares his new life of faith to jumping out of an airplane without a parachute, and calls on you to take the plunge. When Stephen Baldwin was riding the wave of fame from his most successful movie, The Usual Suspects, he thought he was in his glory. Hot in Hollywood--whatever Stephen wanted, Stephen got. Years later, happily married and living his life far from Hollywood, Stephen happened upon Christianity via a most unusual conversion. Now Stephen takes us behind the scenes and tells the stories we've yet to hear--of celebrity fun, curious family, and hardcore faith. He takes an in-depth look at the church's current role in society and the extreme faith movement. It's obvious Stephen has identified his new role in life--that of a Christian--a role more radical than anything in Hollywood.

I couldn't put this book down! Steven Baldwin is funny, humble, real, inspiring and contagious concerning his faith! I will recommend this to everyone!

4 out of 5 stars typical.......2007-09-25

I started this book with an intense curiosity to see just what type of faith this man would be talking about. Certainly we can see that Mr. Baldwin is living a much better life since he adopted Christianity! There is no doubt about that.

But where he falls short is when he starts trying to preach and convert others. His claim that only his God is the right one, and his belief in a literal interpretation of the Bible point to the fact that he can only address the lower ends of the belief spectrum: the Stage ones (see my blog: BeliefStagesandGrowth.com for explanation) who are as yet totally unprincipled and need to adopt that type of religion to make their lives work and the Stage Twos who have already adopted his same type of Christianity and are happy to find their own beliefs substantiated by his.

Certainly, Mr. Baldwin's ministry is of great benefit to the Stage Ones of the world. I wish him much luck in converting all of them! But I do wish there were more understanding in the world that other forms of belief (including that held by many more advanced Christians - Stage Fours) that hold validity as well. Mr. Baldwin makes the mistake of assuming all the world either follows his religion, (called Stage twos on my blog: BeliefStagesandGrowth.com) or lives a totally unprincipled life filled with the chaos of his own pre-Christian experience. (called Stage one on my blog) He seems to try to refute the objections some of the upper level believers might offer (i.e. a God of love would never send anyone to hell,) but he does so in a typically Stage two way - with short, pat answers that come from the bible and are based simply on blind faith.

The only trouble with promoting this simplistic belief system as being the final word is that it discourages the possiblity of questioning and growth to one of the more mature forms (http://beliefstagesandgrowth.com/blog/2007/07/29/walter-clarks-criteria-for-a-mature-religion/)that people might be able to achieve, were the less mature form not being touted in such a pat way by people like Mr. Baldwin.

1 out of 5 stars Couldn't make it past the first paragraph.......2007-09-24

I decided to check this book out because I had heard some great things about the upcoming movie "Midnight Clear". As I read the first paragraph, I was troubled by the comment he made about Barney- ??? - Rubble. What is that about? We all now what that's a euphemism for. It was a red flag for me. I'm not judging the guy. I just don't want to read that.

5 out of 5 stars Stevie B has a great Holy Spirit directed book.......2007-08-30

Stevie B's book I truely believe is inspired by God HIMSELF. What the Lord is doing in the Livin it Ministries is great. You can really see the power of God in Unusual Suspect and with the wonderful stories and teaching to the Young and old, married and unmarried alike. God is AWESOME!! I really pray that the Lord Jesus does a great and mighty work with this book and the Ministry to bring many into HIS KINGDOM.
