      Book Description

This outstanding textbook presents innovative interventions for youth with severe emotional and behavioral disorders. Community Treatment for Youth is designed to fill a gap between the knowledge base and clinical practice through its presentation of theory, practice parameters, training requirements, and research evidence. Featuring community-based and state-of-the-art services for youth with severe emotional and behavioral disorders and their families, this volume describes each intervention in depth, along with the supporting evidence for its utility. Most chapters present a single intervention as an alternative to institutional care. Shared characteristics of these interventions include delivery of services in the community (homes, schools, and neighborhoods) provided largely by parents and paraprofessional staff. The interventions are appropriate to use in any of the child human services sectors and have been developed in the field with real-world child and family clients. In addition, they offer a reduced cost in comparison to institutional care. Several chapters address diagnostic-specific psychosocial and psychopharmacological treatments, which are likely to be provided as adjunctive treatment in a clinical setting. Designed to update professionals in the field about effective services, Community Treatment for Youth will serve as a resource for academics, policymakers, practitioners, consumers, and researchers.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2007-03-10

Andrew Malekoff does a wonderful job of sharing what real group work is all about. He is humble, has a sense of humor and true appreciation for adolescents. He shares his years of experience and the wisdom he has gained in a generous and very understandable way.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful and enjoyable to read.......1999-08-18

This has been the most useful book I've found on this subject in 18 years of facilitating adolescent support and therapy groups. The author's clarity, clinical sense, and humor made this a pleasure to read.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate book on social group work with adolescents........1999-01-21

MaleKoff's book is an extraordinary resource for any who hope to understand the world of adolescents, and the skills that are necessary to work successfully with them. Malekoff brings to his writing several decades of work with these young adults and he has a profound understanding of the difficult and often frightening world they inhabit. The book is sound counceptually, and refers freely to the literature. Malekoff writes with grace, and empathy, as well as with humor. This particular quality, important for work with all ages, is essential in work with this age group.Malekoff also is a published poet, and the book often uses poetry, his own and that of others,to teach and inform the reader. Work with groups has been neglected for many years, as professionals have tended to find it too difficult and unpredictable. Now, Malekoff has shown us the way, and his book will be of great use for social workers with groups, for teachers, and for others who want to work effectively with these young people. The book also is a powerful testimony to the effectiveness of the group work method of social work practice in serving this population.

      Book Description

Over the past decade, urban communities have experienced unprecedented social, economic, and political transformation. Globalization and de-industrialization have contributed to the exodus of jobs, produced higher levels of inequality, and consequent, furthered marginalization of the urban poor. Urban youth have been particularly affected by this transformation. The failure of urban school districts and the lack of jobs, health services and effective prevention and intervention programs have placed large numbers of low-income urban youth at risk. In the absence of policies and institutions that respond to the needs of youth, a climate of fear focused particularly on responding to fears of youth crime has also shaped a national consciousness about urban communities and the youth within them.
Urban Youth and Community Change brings together work by leading scholars who study urban youth and who have a grounded knowledge of the issues they face. A commitment to social justice and equity is a unifying theme for this volume, and each of the authors examines to varying degrees how such values and commitments can be incorporated into public policy. The goal of this edited volume is to draw on the knowledge and expertise of these scholars from various academic disciplines and to share with policymakers and the general public insights into the impact of punitive/zero tolerance policies on young people's educational experience and well being. These chapters also offer new ideas about how to support youth placed at risk by deteriorating circumstances in urban areas and offers recommendations on how to create more humane and responsive youth policies at the local, state and federal level.

5 out of 5 stars Broad, poignant and challenging.......2007-03-28

For youth workers with a preconceived notion about the roles of young people in society, this collection may be challenging. For teachers who think they know the power of students, Ginwright may be shocking. For young people who think they understanding "the movement", this book may be eye-opening. Ginwright collects dozens of the best examples of youth-led and youth-driven activism and refines them to their finest points, charging the reader to do more than complain about apathy or revel in cynicism. He leaves us no choice other than getting up to do something. Thanks Shawn - we need that. This book is an incredible read for anyone interested in the movement at any level. Before this book the reader might want to see Global Uprising : Confronting the Tyrannies of the 21st Century : Stories from a New Generation of Activists; after it you might want to reference Future 500: Youth Organizing and Activism in the United States.

      Book Description

"I am highly enthusiastic about this work….this volume will be a watershed event in the field of applied developmental science (ADS) generally and, more specifically, in the study and enhancement of youth development….The editors of this book are among the premier ADS scholars in the youth development field. Indeed, their leadership has been, I would guess, the reason they have been able to assemble such a "star-studded" group of contributors to this project."--Richard M. Lerner, Tufts University

In the face of the public perception that youth are engaged in more violence now than at any other period in our nation’s history, what does it take to create a community that promotes positive opportunities for all young people? Or, in other words, how do we look at teenagers as resources to be nurtured, rather than viewing them as problems to be remedied?

Community Youth Development: Programs, Policies, and Practices focuses on positive methods for youth development that are rapidly supplanting the traditional deficit-oriented, problem-reduction approaches. Edited by eminent scholars Francisco A. Villarruel, Daniel F. Perkins, Lynne M. Borden, and Joanne G. Keith, this accessible volume provides practical tools and models for developing community-wide initiatives that strengthen protective factors, build competencies, and focus on thriving indicators. Examining the needs of multiple audiences, programs, and policies, each chapter contributes to an overall understanding of the "how" and "why" of community youth development.

A diverse and distinguished group of contributors formulate a comprehensive framework of positive youth development by examining

Community Youth Development supplies readers with the essential information to successfully create an environment that provides optimal opportunities for healthy youth development. The editors gather together the top names from many of the most innovative programs in youth development to ensure authoritative, cutting-edge coverage.

Designed for upper division undergraduate and graduate students in human development, family studies, and education, Community Youth Development is also an invaluable resource for researchers, practitioners, and policy advocates for youth and community development.

This book is alright by textbook standards. It seems like it repeats a lot of the same information, though. If you've never been exposed to community youth development programs before, you'll probably learn a lot. But, if you know anything about this topic already, it will seem like common sense to you.

      Book Description

Practical solutions for difficult clinical situations!

This unique handbook focuses specifically on the practical aspects of helping this client population. It highlights major areas of practice as they apply to maltreated children: medical findings; clinical assessment; individual, group, and family therapy; testifying in court; and the role of medication in treatment. Each clinical chapter is followed by a clinical vignette that demonstrates how the principles outlined can be applied in practice.

The Handbook for the Treatment of Abused and Neglected Children pulls together a wide range of practical information for therapists on how to effectively work with abused and neglected children. Unlike other volumes on the subject, this book puts the information in context, with a 'big picture' overview of how the therapist fits into the larger system into which the child has been swept up—Child Protective Services, legal proceedings, medical issues, disputes regarding custody, etc.

Inside, you'll find effective strategies for:

conducting individual therapy with abused children—how to begin therapy, identify distortions, effectively challenge ingrained patterns of behavior, and constructively bring therapy to a close

navigating the maze of Child Protective Services—knowing what resources are available, what obstacles are likely to arise, and how to work with social workers

understanding the medical findings of maltreated children—how information from a child's physician can provide critical insights into the child's experience, and often into children's expectations of future relationships

testifying in court as a therapist—how the court works and how to prepare to give effective testimony

facilitating parent interventions—how to help mothers and fathers develop relationships with their children to the fullest and nurture each child's potential as his or her personality develops The Handbook for the Treatment of Abused and Neglected Children will prove valuable for students and educators as well as novice and experienced therapists. Whether you see children only occasionally or focus your practice on maltreated children, this one-of-a-kind resource deserves a place in your professional collection.

          Book Description

Intuition is Not Enough explores the connections between the challenges of therapeutic practice with disturbed children and of professional training in social work and therapy. Advancing the principle that professional training must reflect the key principles of professional practice, the contributors to this volume demonstrate how the developmental principles underlying therapeutic work with young people can influence the design and practice of training. The book is comprised of contributions from participants in the University of Reading program that pioneered this method of therapeutic instruction, which has come to be known as the "matching principle." Authors who have implemented or undergone this form of training describe how they have been able to apply their learning in the course of professional practice, and the struggles they have encountered in doing so.

          1 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2004-05-26

As a clinical social worker with institute training and who suprvises extensively beginning therapits, this book was a major disappointment. Its organization is somewhat disjointed and a major failure is that it does not address non-compliant clients, silences etc.
