Book Description

Created as an alternative to the punishment-oriented criminal justice system, the juvenile court is a unique American invention that has been replicated around the world. But to say that this system is without significant flaws would be misleading. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the juvenile justice system is a vital step towards improving counseling and rehabilitation programs.

Preventing and Reducing Juvenile Delinquency: A Comprehensive Framework presents the latest research and most effective programs for understanding, preventing, and controlling juvenile delinquency. Renowned specialist in the field James C. Howell examines key myths about juvenile violence and the ability of the juvenile justice system to handle modern-day juvenile delinquents. Reviewing the history of current juvenile justice system policies and practices, Howell provides a comprehensive framework for analyzing and responding to juvenile crime.

Geared toward preparing students for a career in juvenile justice or social services, this accessible volume includes

Preventing and Reducing Juvenile Delinquency explores the world of chronic, violent juvenile offenders and gang involvement. Evaluating the current "moral panic" over juvenile delinquency, the author offers an effective program delivery system that empowers individual practitioners and communities.

Intended as a supplementary text for undergraduate and graduate courses in juvenile delinquency, juvenile justice, and violent offender intervention courses, Preventing and Reducing Juvenile Delinquency is also essential reading for juvenile justice and social services research and development specialists.

4 out of 5 stars A good review of the juvenile justice field.......2006-09-07

I used this book in a Juvenile Deliquency course. It is packed with important information, theoretical orientations, and Howell spends much time addressing the history of the field and JD in general. I found the book to work very welll for the more professional orientated students in the class. For example, I had a couple of police officers who really liked the book because it addressed some very practical issues they were facing every day. Other, less experienced, students were a little put off by the small print and the textbook format. The book is also a little repetitive, and the same topics are are addressed in different places in the book. Although it was published in 2003, many of the statistics are outdated which is a shame. I would love to see a revised and/ or a condensed edition.

5 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive coverage of juvenile justice available.......2003-03-18

Dr. James Howell's book is the most comprehensive and up-to-date source currently available on the American juvenile justice system. Chapters cover the causes and correlates of delinquency, various parts of the juvenile justice system, what works and what doesn't to prevent and reduce delinquency, and presents compelling arguments about why a separate juvenile justice system (distinct from the adult justice system) should be retained. A must-read/must-have one-stop source.

Book Description

Authors Deborah Prothrow-Stith and Howard R. Spivak— two prominent Boston-area public health officials who played leading roles in that city's turnaround— show that the key to Boston's success was creating an interdisciplinary citywide movement. The city's movement— made up of educators, community leaders, police officers, emergency room workers, activist teens, teen and family member survivors of violence, and many others— worked for more than ten years to implement multifaceted preventive programs that confronted each risk factor for youth violence, including

5 out of 5 stars Very readable understanding of a complex issue.......2003-11-17

I was pleasantly surprised to find this book so readable. This issue is a concern for all parents, educators, youth group leaders, and others who care about raising responsible citizens. Drs. Prothrow-Stith and Spivak write as if they are talking to you over a cup of coffee and explain the multi-faceted, grass roots, common sense approach to understanding why violence is so much a part of American society. While the statistics are frightening, the over all tone of the book is positive. They describe what can be done and encourage us to do it.

Book Description

Terrorists and peacemakers may grow up in the same community and adhere to the same religious tradition. The killing carried out by one and the reconciliation fostered by the other indicate the range of dramatic and contradictory responses to human suffering by religious actors. This book explains what religious terrorists and religious peacemakers share in common, what causes them to take different paths in fighting injustice, and how a deeper understanding of religious extremism can and must be integrated more effectively into our thinking about tribal, regional, and international conflict.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating text.......2001-06-03

R. Scott Appleby's work is a deeply intriguing in-depth study of the role that religious actors presently play in international politics, exploring both positive functions filled and negative. He also outlines ways in which actors might be involved in beneficial capacities in the future. In my reasonably limited experience, this text constitutes perhaps the most even-handed treatment of its subject material, and has served men as a very valuable resource. Recommended highly for students of international politics.

ASIN: 0500282781

Book Description

In this controversial and compassionate book, the distinguished psychiatrist James Gilligan proposes a radically new way of thinking about violence and how to prevent it. Violence is most often addressed in moral and legal terms: "How evil is this action, and how much punishment does it deserve?" Unfortunately, this way of thinking, the basis for our legal and political institutions, does nothing to shed light on the causes of violence. Violent criminals have been Gilligan's teachers, and he has been their student. Prisons are microcosms of the societies in which they exist, and by examining them in detail, we can learn about society as a whole. Gilligan suggests treating violence as a public health problem. He advocates initiating radical social and economic change to attack the root causes of violence, focusing on those at increased risk of becoming violent, and dealing with those who are already violent as if they were in quarantine rather than in constraint for their punishment and for society's revenge. The twentieth century was steeped in violence. If we attempt to understand the violence of individuals, we may come to prevent the collective violence that threatens our future far more than all the individual crimes put together.

Having read Dr. Gilligan's first book, I was very excited to see he had a sequel dealing with the prevention of violence. The first one changed my perspective on a number of things and this book expanded on that. I strongly recommend it to anyone wanting to understand the necessary factors for preventing violence.

    Book Description

Highlights the importance of creating culturally compatible interventions to stop violence by examining risk factors common to all groups of youth, such as feeling alienated from mainstream culture and searching for self-identity, and then focus on risk, resilience, and distinguishing factors among particular racial and ethnic groups, including Latino, African American, Asian American, Pacific Islander, American Indian, and White youth. Focuses on the interaction between environmental conditions and the individual risk factors that foster youth violence; Recommends interventions tailored to each group as well as advice on how to incorporate cultural competence into more general youth violence prevention programs. The social-ecological approach taken in this volume emphasizes the learned nature of aggression and violence, and many of the recommended interventions involve changing the context in which violence is taught, therefore truly encouraging long-term violence prevention.

        Book Description

Written with clarity and passion, Preventing Hazing uncovers the deep roots of hazing, how and why it permeates schools, colleges, and communities, and what parents, teachers, and coaches can do to prevent it. The author shows how to recognize the warning signs, what to do if a student has been involved in a hazing (either as a victim, bystander, or perpetrator), how to deal with the moral, legal, and emotional aspects of hazing, and, ultimately, how to heal and move forward both as an individual and a community.

I thoroughly recommend this volume to parents of adolescents and young adults who may be embarking on thier college years. Dr. Lipkins astutely points out key elements of the problem and strategies to prevent and deal with the difficulties involved in hazing. A must-read for those with interest in the topic and a need for more information on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars The must have book for every parent of a teenager.......2006-10-27

This book is one that all high schools should distribute on back to school night along with their school guidelines. As well, colleges should distribute the book at their first meeting on campus with the kids and families. It is about time someone brought out into the open what most fraternities are about. Schools only tell us the "great news of having fraternities and sororities on campus". Dr. Lipkins tells us the behind the scene actions of these "great boys will be boys organizations". This is an extremely well written book. It is a step by step guide on recognizing hazing, and what actions to take if you find your child involved in it. As parents we all want to protect our children, but how could we have protected them from the danger of hazing when we didn't even know what was going on? This book gives parents the tools we need to keep our kids safe. I highly recommend this very informative book. The author's knowledge of this subject is very visible in her writing and I command her for taking such an interest in a subject that has been swept under the rug for too long, at the cost of our childrens safety.

5 out of 5 stars Parents must read this book.......2006-09-17

As a college student I witnessed countless hazings. I had friends that became emotionally scarred as the result of sorority initiation rites. Even more extreme was the physical abuse of big ten college athletes that took place in my own house. I will never forget how I felt as a bystander watching the most respected athletes of my school drag the newest members of their team through my front door, forcing them to drink until they had no control of themselves and proceed to humiliate them in front of a house full of women. I knew this wasn't right yet I was at a loss of how to handle the situation. I wish I had Dr. Lipkins book twenty years ago to help me through this. Every parent should read Preventing Hazing and discuss it with their children. Hazing is a very serious issue with severe emotional and physical implications. Finally someone has written a book to help all those involved. Please read it!!!!!!!
        Deborah Shlafmitz

5 out of 5 stars A must read for parents and coaches.......2006-09-14

As a psychologist specializing in teens I highly recommend this book for parents of high school and college-age teens as well as for educators. It contains important advice, practical suggestions and information that can dramatically reduce the risk of a teen becoming the victim of a dangerous hazing experience. It also provides critical tools for how to intervene and heal when hazing is discovered. Don't think that this can't happen in your community or to your child--it can. Dr. Lipkins clearly has the experience and background necessary to help us understand what we need to do to end the devastation of hazing.

        5 out of 5 stars Basic Review.......2006-09-13

I am currently a school psychologist, a former high school championship baseball coach and scholarship athlete--this book nails it on the head--full of very useful analysis of the culture of hazing--something that goes on at some level on virually every team and although some think it builds team morale, it really saps the energy from the team as well identified by Lipkins--the book provides a deeper understanding about how to understand and deal with hazing--. Book Description

With a view to deepening our understanding of sources of hatred and prejudice, this book uses a developmental and evolutionary perspective to explore and explain the process by which our beliefs are conveyed to the youngest members of society. Discussing the psychological obstacles to peaceful relations between groups, the authors focus on the developmental processes by which we can work to diminish ethnocentrism, prejudice, and hatred, which children learn from a very early age. Until now, scholarship and practice in international relations have gravely neglected crucial psychological aspects of these terrible problems and have not yet explored the educational opportunities related to them. Addressing these promising lines of inquiry and innovation, this book fosters a more humane and less violent development in childhood and adolescence. Educators, religious leaders, developmental and social psychologists, will find this a valuable resource, as will a socially concerned segment of the public who are looking for practical ways to work for peace.

The volume is an excellent blend of history, theory, applications, and training programs dealing with violence. I learned important facts about epidemiology, resilience, and public health models. There are also interesting special chapters on both perpetrators and on victims (especially women and girls). This book is a gold mine of useful references." --George W. Albee, Past President, American Psychological Association "Unfortunately, violence permeates every aspect of American life. . . . It's on our streets, in our schools, and even in our homes. Preventing Violence in America provides an important service by creating a greater public awareness and understanding of this challenge. This book helps in our fight against crime and violence and in reaching our ultimate goal of creating a peaceful society for America's families." --Chris Dodd, U.S. Senator (CT) and Chair, Senate Committee on Children, Family, Drugs & Alcoholism "The editors have assembled an outstanding book that combines the history, theory, applications, and training for dealing with violence in our society. They quickly dispel the common belief that, in times past, the actual conditions and social climate were better than they are today. . . . This book promotes an understanding of the social context of violent behavior, whether occurring within the family or larger community, and points out connections between violence occurring within the home and in the community. . . . I was most impressed by the chapter written by Martin Bloom, which goes into great detail about the factors that contribute to the development of a resilient person--one who can turn away from violence, in spite of living in a negative environment. . . . This book offers as complete a discussion of violence as I've seen. It should be required reading for anyone who is seriously interested in trying to reduce the incidence of violence in our society." --Joseph M. Rimmer in Science Books & Films Why are people hurting, maiming, and killing one another in our society? What can be done to address the problem of violence in the United States? Preventing Violence in America confronts violence head-on by exploring these questions and examining current strategies for prevention. A talented group of scholars and practitioners joins up to review the history and theoretical explanations of violence and then tackles issues related to the disproportionate presence of violence within minority populations, the concept of psychological resiliency, how spirituality may serve as a protective factor, and the role of TV in promoting violence. The volume also analyzes prevention and intervention strategies in public health, among gangs in the High-Risk Youth program, and the implementation of the Second Step curriculum for use in school systems. Preventing Violence in America offers the most current information in violence prevention to professionals in social work and crime reduction as well as researchers and students in victimology, family studies, developmental psychology, and sociology.
