Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Thoroughly disappointing.......2007-07-12

The books in this series are probably the best single volume sources on these aircraft in English. As such they are almost indispensible. Unfortunately, they contain none of the excellent color profiles of the original Aircam volumes of which these are reprints. They are not even reprints; they are copies. These volumes even include the black-and-white
plan views that refer back to the color section, now useless, as there is no color section.
Moreover, the original Aircam volumes can often be had on Ebay, and at less cost. The books in this series could have been superb, as they are, merely disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Nakajima's Ki 43 Hayabusa (Oscar), the JAAF's own Zero.......2002-09-07

Up till a few decades ago the Mitsubishi 'Zero' , though not the only, certainly was the best known Japanese WW2 fighter, so many allied pilots believed they fought 'Zeros' all over Asia, e.g. the 'Flying Tigers'. The JAAF however had it's own 'Zero': the Nakajima Ki.43 Hayabusa (allied code name 'Oscar').
This plane is the subject of three remarkebly similair books: this Osprey/Aircam no.13, the ARCO/Aircam no.15, and the Schiffer Books 'Nakajima Ki.43 Hayabusa I-III', the second volume in their series about Japanese aircraft. How come? The British book is the original, the ARCO/Aircam is the Americam edition of it and the Schiffer Books' version is the revised and updated edition of the original. Together with the 'Aircraft in Profile no.46' (to be found in 'Aircraft in Profile vol.2') and a Hayabusa book by Merriam Press they form pretty much everything that has been published about this plane in the English language. It is done in the usual Aircam-style: 50 pages crammed with black-and-white photographs, 8 pages of colour art and a text portion of 8 pages in his case.
A must for the modeller, lots of painting schemes can be done with this book at hand. If and when you're fluent in Polish you can buy two Polish publications about the Nakajima Ki-43 hayabusa as well (AJ-Press "Monografie Lotnicze" and Ace Publications "Pod-Lupa"). If your knowledge of languages extends to Japanese there is a wealth of other sources, amongst them three different editions of the Bunrin-do's Famous Aicraft of the World series.

5 out of 5 stars Best thing in English on the Hayabusa.......1999-07-28

The Hayabusa was the Japanese army's equivalent of the famed Zero fighter, and was often mistaken for it in the early months of the war. (By the AVG Flying Tigers, among others.) This is a reprint of Dick Bueschel's 1970 paperback from Arco. Unfortunately it wasn't updated to include more recent knowledge, but it remains the best thing available in English on this remarkable (for 1941) aircraft.

Much the same applies to Bueschel's other titles in this series, and especially to the less-famous aircraft (pretty much everything except the Zero, which has been well-researched and written about in recent years).

      Book Description

1794. A translation of the following history of the Mission of the United Brethren among the North American Indians was much wished for by the Brethren in England and America. The delay in translating the work occasioned in the completion of it tended to its improvement, as several observations and amendments suggested by the author and North American missionaries were carefully attended to in the translation. Due to the age and scarcity of the original we reproduced, some pages may be spotty, faded or difficult to read. Written in Old English.

        Book Description

This book will be of value both to scientists and to undergraduate and graduate students who want to write successful grant or research proposals. For scientists, today's environment of limited funding from Congress and private foundations means that grant proposals must be effective, competitive, and readable. The book is designed to provide a guide to writing proposals and improving their overall quality. For graduate students in the natural sciences, courses on proposal development and writing are increasingly part of the curriculum--this book is, in fact, derived from a course taught by the authors at Dartmouth. Increasingly, research design is a part of the curriculum for undergraduates in science. This book will provide guidance during the conceptualization and formulation of a research plan as well as give specific information for effectively organizing and presenting material in a format widely used for proposal submissions.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable for new grant writers.......2007-09-08

I used to think Miner & Miner had the best book on "Proposal Planning and Writing," until I read this. Easy to read and re-read, this short book distills the wisdom of many mentors into a thoughtful, well-organized, and still timely package. Practical techniques (e.g. completing administrative and technical tasks are an easy way to get started) are interspersed with actual examples of various sections of a grant. Consider it a small investment relative to the grant you will ultimately get!

4 out of 5 stars Good overview of the content and organization of a proposal.......2004-04-14

Friedland and Folt provide a very nice, concise guide to writing research proposals. They go over the organization of the proposal, what is important to get across in what sections, and also touch on the "storytelling" aspects, such as funneling from broad themes to specifics. I also found useful the list a range of funding sources.

The only major drawback to the book as a general reference is that it is heavily oriented towards experimental biology. Much of the nuts-and-bolts advice doesn't apply to theoretical work, and little or no equivalent advice is given for theoretical proposals.

5 out of 5 stars Frieland and Folt a Success.......2000-04-06

Friedland and Folt are the Strunk and White of proposal writing. They have written a clear, concise guide to scientific proposal writing that captures the essence of the scientific enterprise.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for all beginning PhD students.......2000-03-09

Writing a PhD prospectus can be pretty intimidating. Where do you start? What do you include? What do you not include? This little book has the answers, and it has been an enormous help to me as I write my own proposal. Friedland and Folt's book is very clear and well-written, and full of practical information on how to write a clear, concise, and exciting proposal. Exercises along the way help to guide you step-by-step through the whole thought process. With this book in hand, writing a prospectus almost seems easy! This book should be sent to all first-year students, along with their registration materials.

4 out of 5 stars Getting past the government gobbledegook........2001-01-08

Most persons pursuing careers in higher education are expected to engage in research and seek funding for those efforts. In most universities, "research" is considered one of the three legs of the stool of knowledge. Moreover, doing "research" typically implies that the academic seek outside funding to pay for those research activities. Although there are many sources of research funding, the federal government stands out as the most significant source of research support. Therefore, when a group of senior level managers with funding responsibilities write a book describing the funding process, and some of the secrets and pitfalls of the process, those developing research grant applications would do well to become familiar with this book.

Pequegnat and Stover hold senior level positions in the US National Institute of Mental Health and specialize in behavioral research relating to AIDS. The book they have developed brings together more than 30 contributors who have worked in various aspects of AIDS research, many from positions at NIMH, and others from University or other research viewpoints. Because of this focus, most of the book focuses on the processes particular to NIMH and uses AIDS research as the focus for examples. It is obvious, however, that the principles and processes laid out will be useful to those seeking research support from other federal program agencies, as well as from state, industry or private funding entities.

The book has three sections and 20 chapters. Section I deals with "Grantsmanship and the Review Process;" its eight chapters lay out several important considerations for any person interested in developing a research application. The pieces deal with the general philosophy of a research program, gathering information from government communications, and an overview of the ways in which a government agency views submissions from university or other researchers. This section also addresses matters relating to research design, hypothesis development, and even ways to better understand and use feedback from application reviewers.

The ten chapters of section II deal with "Developing Sections of Your Research Application" and provide a wealth of applicable information about developing exciting hypotheses for testing, using qualitative inquiry instrumentation, relating to, and gaining assistance from other disciplines, and some nuts-and-bolts issues relating to human subjects, budget, the data analytic plan, and even presentation of staff resumes to support and strengthen the grant application package.

Section III, with two chapters covers "Disseminating Your Findings." This section addresses delivering a talk about the research, and a final chapter provides a great deal of detail on adding visuals to presentations-charts graphs and other support materials. Three appendix sections provide an actual example of a successful research application and addresses issues such as data analysis, budget justification and other issues such as charts, timelines and visual aids.

Several chapters will be especially useful for the relatively inexperienced grant-seeker. Pequegnat's chapter on "Signals to the Field" highlights the role of Program Announcements (PAs) and Requests for Applications (RFAs) that signal particular areas of interest to the granting agency. The chapter also suggests other ways in which interest is announced, ways to carefully read those communications in order to be responsive to the guidance.

AIDS is the area of interest and expertise for all of the contributors, yet the subtitle of the volume, "A Guide for Social and Behavioral Scientists" suggests useful application to other areas of inquiry. It is not difficult to extrapolate the specifics of NIMH AIDS research to other areas of health research, and to behavioral and social science research in general. The pieces on research design, qualitative inquiry, study design, and others will be useful to academics and research designers in a broad field of interest.

The book is well organized, clearly written, and not unnecessarily bound by particular jargon of the contributing researchers. It should be helpful reading to a wide group, albeit specialized, group of scholars.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Thorough, full of sound advice and strategy.......2001-04-10

To set expectations this book is heavily slanted towards winning Government business. It is also applicable to large businesses as well as small ones. That said, the information in this unique book can be effectively used by consultants and companies intent on competing for commercial contracts. I am fortunate because I have experience in Government contracting (on both sides of the fence - writing RFPs and evaluating responses when I was a member of DoD, and responding to RFPs when I was in the DoD contracting industry), and in the commercial world where I have been working as a consultant since 1988. From my vantage point I see the value of this book as advice and guidelines for developing effective proposal strategies regardless of whether you are competing for Government or commercial business.

I have used this book as a ready reference since the first edition was published in 1997. This second edition reflects a major update to the original book in that the proposal management tools in the first edition were woefully out of date and the focus was not on some of the Government opportunities for small business, such as Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR)that require a tailored proposal strategy. The second edition also addresses new Government initiatives for e-business and a plethora of other topics that were not present in the first edition.

If you are competing for Government business this is the most complete, accurate book I know of that covers the RFP-Proposal-Negotiation-Award process. Short of memorizing the FAR (Federal Acquisition Regulations), amassing years of proposal writing experience, and gaining the wisdom of knowing what works and what doesn't you will not find a more concise guide to the process. Also, you will benefit greatly from the wealth of tips and pointers that the author provides from his own extensive experience. If you are in the DoD contracting business, regardless of business size, I cannot overemphasize this book's value when it comes to cutting through the maze and providing a clear roadmap. If you are a proposal or capture manager I strongly recommend that you get a copy for every member of your team.

For the book's readers who are in the commercial sector the approach outlined in this book will add process and structure to your proposal writing efforts. The rigorous requirements imposed by the Government are too often lacking in the commercial process, which results in sloppy proposals that meander around issues and miss important client requirements. Also, because the proposal development process can be as large a task in the commercial sector, managing it can be a nightmare without a well thought out strategy for ensuring that all of the "t"s are crossed and "i"s dotted. The approach in this book practically hands you a ready-made process that you can apply to proposal development. This process will not only improve your ability to respond quickly and accurately to RFPs, but do so in an efficient manner. The result will be a significant competitive advantage.

For both sets of readers I think some of the advice, such as using the proposal as a marketing tool as well as a due-diligence instrument for responding to RFPs is excellent. For example, the author emphasizes backing up responses with examples to demonstrate claims. This is a powerful technique that I have used repeatedly to good advantage. It goes a long way towards assuaging client concerns about capabilities versus empty claims, and will turn a proposal that is merely responsive into one that is compelling.

Other things that make this book extremely valuable include the CD ROM of checklists and templates, and the numerous examples from the author's past proposals.

In my opinion this is the best book available for proposal development, and the only one that fully addresses every aspect of managing the proposal process for Government business. It should be on the shelf of anyone who responds to RFPs, and in the library of every company that does Government or commercial contracting.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and Professional.......2001-03-01

Don't let the trade price of this book deter you. Mr. Frey analyzes every aspect of the RFP-proposal process, and he includes a storehouse of resources to place you at a competitive advantage. No other book even comes close.

5 out of 5 stars Fueling Your Enterprise.......2000-02-08

          5 out of 5 stars A MUST-READ..........1999-01-30

Successful Proposal Strategies for Small Businesses is a MUST-READ for anyone involved in the government contracting procurement cycle. Everyone from the technical level manager in business and government to the owners of businesses and top level government managers should have a working knowledge of the information presented in this book. Specific key people who should use this book as a technical reference are:
          1. all business development staff in private industry
          2. technical managers in both industry and government
          3. all technical publications staff
          4. all government buyers, and procurement staff: including technical officers, source selection officers and source selection board and committee members.

The business development principles illuminated in this book apply equally when businesses sell to and buy from other businesses.

Moreover, I would like to see a companion periodical publication, a CD-ROM or a newsletter, that updates the rapidly changing technological and regulatory aspects of the book. Subscribers to such a service would include all full-time business development and government procurement staff.

The book's style is that of a successful proposal. The book, as the successful proposals discussed by Mr. Frey, is an effective sales document as well as en extremely informative technical reference. The key strengths of this work are its completeness and depth. Mr. Frey provides us with a broad overview of the procurement process presented from the perspective of the business developer. The book clearly shows how the various members of a small business organization should interact to produce a successful business development effort.

At each stage of the business development process the book describes all of the necessary steps to a winning proposal. Detailed schedules, document templates, document samples and examples clearly illustrate every critical step required for planning and executing a successful proposal effort. The book presents all aspects of proposal writing including the development and use of themes, illustrations, style, and even the physical production and delivery of the proposal have in a "user friendly" manner. Mr. Frey's system of handling acronyms and his implementation of the glossary are extremely valuable to the reader. The completeness of the acronym list alone is, in my view, worth more than the price of the book.

Two key concepts developed throughout the book are: the concept of proposals as sales documents, and the critical requirement for solid and continuous upper management's support of the business and proposal development process.

Private companies, both small and large, will find this book invaluable as the blueprint for establishing, and implementing their business development infrastructures.

5 out of 5 stars Great tool for winning competitive Government contracts.......1998-11-18

Mr. Frey's book covers the full lifecycle for capturing new business. He provides a clear strategy for identification and qualification of "winnable" opportunities, and a section-by-section cookbook for how to plan for and create a winning proposal. In our case, we have successfully applied the processes and guidelines found in this book to position us for capture of over $30,000,000 of new small business competitive Government contracts. This is good stuff!
