5 out of 5 stars A fantastic reference.......2005-08-01

This book is not only a great reference to German pistols and revolvers, from the common garden varieties to the rarest of the rare. It is also extremely well written, and has provided me with hours of enjoyable browsing.

Each piece is listed with a photograph, a brief history of its development, a description of assembly and disassembly, and then a table with all of the essential statistics.

While I have no idea if this book is comprehensive, it is certainly a great resource for collectors and students of history.

Who does this lady think she is? Her books contradict each other more than the bible. In this book she claims to have experienced hell. But the first page in Eclipse, she says there isn't a hell. She needs to make her mind up before she puts her words in print.

5 out of 5 stars Opened my eyes to a new way of seeing.......2005-09-05

I remember my father reading this book back in the 1980s and how much he liked it. As I got older and more jaded by corporate life he suggested I read it, it would change my life. I kept putting it off and finally bought my own copy in late 1999. I still didn't read it though. I left it sitting on my book shelf for two more years. Well, when I finally picked it up - I couldn't put it down. I read it in one night and have reread it five times since. Mary Summer Rain and No Eyes are what I have been looking for for a long time. I read the first page and felt like I was home. Spirit Song has helped me so much to see that it's not about me, but all of us me's out there. I can't wait to read the next one: Phoenix Rising.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Journey of the Senses!!!.......2005-07-03

I just finished reading this wonderful book, and I am still awed by its' beauty! "Spirit Song" is truly a gem to behold!

Mary Summer Rain's writing style is such that I actually felt as though I was right there with her & the "old woman" - hearing, seeing, smelling, feeling, & sensing all that they did. What a wonderful journey it was!

"Spirit Song" is a story about the author's meeting, and subsequent learning from, and old Chippewa visionary. It is filled with the most beautiful imagery of the Colorado mountains - where both resided - as well as the amazing imagery of the past & potential future of life on earth.

It's about an old woman with much to teach, and a younger woman who is eager to learn. It's about that special bond we all need - friendship. It's about hardship & loss, and bliss & freedom. This book is so many things all wrapped up in a wonderfully written package.

This is the first book in the No-Eyes series - apparently there are several - and I am quite eager now to order & read the next one.

If you are at all interested in spirituality and/or the American Indian culture, this would be a great book for you. I can't recommend it highly enough! I would also recommend the book "Black Elk", which is another great portrayal of the life of an old Indian visionary.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Mary Summer Rain.......2005-03-11

This book changed my life. Seriously, it made me rethink everything I thought I knew & find out things I never thought of. I read other spiritual type books before this one that were great. But this one just really touched something in me that rang true. Defenitly a must read for anyone searching for something more meaningful in life.

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Beatific and Beautiful Book!.......2003-02-18

... My girlfriend recommended I read this book, and I'm glad I listened to her. If you have ever read, and enjoyed, any of the many books of Carlos Castaneda ( now passed away - ? ) about his continuing adventures with ( and without ) the Native American Indian shaman-teacher, Don Juan, then you most certainly will also enjoy reading this series of "NO-EYES BOOKS" ( as some call them ) by the gifted author, Mary Summer Rain. ... What a beautiful writer! What a wonderful story! What an amazing set of visions!

... Yeah, she touches upon many of the standard "New Age" bases as she weaves her tale: aliens, alternative medicine, angelic beings, astral projection, astrology, back-to-nature living, dream symbololy, earth changes, ecology, herbology, meditation, mind-reading, Native American spirituality, parapsychology, prophecy, psychic powers, psycho-kinesis, reincarnation, shamanism, spirit-guides, UFO's, vision-quests, et al ... but she does it in a way that has a natural flow and with a a lightness of spirit that is not overbearing or overly serious. She draws you in, instead of hitting you over the head with her insights.

... Is No-Eyes a real person? ... Is Don Juan, or Jesus, or even Socrates? ... Ultimately, who cares? So what?! Or, "What so!," as No-Eyes would say. All that really matters are the archetypal truths conveyed by the narrative. These truths, and "lessons" of No-Eyes, are deep, profound, and life-affirming - and they are there to be appreciated by one and all, thanks to the wise writings of Mary Summer Rain.

... As she quotes No-Eyes on page 61: "Now, in old days Peoples love all stuff. They love trees, mountains, grass, animals, all stuff. Sacred powers were nature forces: wind, water, fire, lightning. Peoples know Father Sky and Earth Mother parents of all life. Every creature have spirit. All nature be People's church. It be bad stuff to force Great Spirit to crouch down into one building. Great Spirit everywhere! It forever duty of Peoples to every day give prayers to Great Mystery, to be thankful. These prayers more important to Peoples than food even. All Peoples see Great Spirit in black rain clouds, hear Him in thundering waterfalls. Peoples make all acts in life a sacred act. Peoples know sacred silence is voice of Great Spirit. This silence be ultimate balance of mind, body, and spirit. Peoples give away all one's stuff! They know stuff not where Great Spirit be. Stuff not important! Summer, that true love. That pure love!"

... How anyone cannot be charmed and moved by this wonderful little treasure of a book is beyond me! If you enjoyed reading Black Elk Speaks, you will enjoy this book. Also, we have all seen those maps of what the future of the planet is supposed to look like by, supposedly, the year 2012. Right? You've seen those maps! Well, remember, that this book was first published in 1985 - way before COMING EARTH CHANGES in 1996 by William Hutton, NOTES FROM THE COSMOS in 1997 by Gordon-Michael Scallion, and many of the other "future prophecy" books out there on the market were published. Remember that the next time you see one of those maps on someone's living room wall! ... One could also say that certain Native American people might take offense to their traditional spirituality being combined with and / or co-opted by "New Age-ism." As we all know, Native Americans very much resent their genuine religious beliefs being exploited by New Agers seeking glory and profit from their ancient wisdom. Nevertheless, Mary Summer Rain writes of these ancient and perenial truths with such respect and loving admiration that one would be hard-pressed to find fault with her. She really is sowing seeds of higher consciousness with these books, and she should be commended for that. ... YOWZA! - The Aeolian Kid

    Book Description

In 1988 Greenwood Press published the Dictionary of Afro-American Slavery to wide acclaim by the library community and scholars in the field. It was selected as a Best Reference Book by Library Journal, a Choice Outstanding Academic Book, and an American Library Association Outstanding Reference Book. Historian John Hope Franklin declared it "an indispensable tool for all students of human bondage," while the Journal of the Early Republic announced "it has something for everyone interested in Afro-American slavery, from the general reader to undergraduate student to professional historian." The Dictionary appeared at a time when the study of slavery commanded a central place in American historical thinking and, increasingly, in a host of other disciplines as well. Interest in slavery has not abated. Yet, despite a growing sophistication in methodology and complexity of analysis, the basic contours of the study remain much the same as when the Dictionary was first issued. To take the latest scholarship into account, the editors have appended a bibliography, arranged by broad thematic areas keyed to topics treated in the text. The bibliography, augmented by the historiographical review of the scholarship of the last decade, makes the Dictionary an invaluable guide for students and scholars alike.

            Book Description

This description of the Americanization of a European institution, the Puritan ministry as it was transported to the New England colonies in the seventeenth century, offers a host of new insights into American religious history. By focusing on such areas as the ministers' authority, church membership, and ecclesiastical organization, David D. Hall shows that, although the effects of the American experience might be considered liberalizing or democratizing in the first years of settlement, during the entire course of the seventeenth century the New World environment produced an institutional development that returned the churches to forms and doctrines that existed before the emigration from Europe.

The Faithful Shepherd not only sustains a bold thesis about Americanization but also affords the reader one of the freshest and most comprehensive histories of the seventeenth-century New England mind and society. This new printing contains a new introduction reflecting on how our understanding of seventeenth-century New England has developed since the book was first published.

Epistemology: Contemporary Readings is a comprehensive anthology that draws together leading philosophers writing on the major themes in epistemology. The book begins with an extended introduction by Robert Audi, one of the leading experts in the field of epistemology in which he sets the stage for the themes of the reader. Each section is prefaced by an introductory essay by the editor. Works include those by Russell, Hume, Berkeley, Quine, Carnap, Nozick, Putnam, Moore, Plato, BonJour, Coady, Carroll, Fumerton, Edwards, Foster, Howson, Urbach, Stove, Empiricus, Oakley, Alston, Gettier, Clark, Goldman, Lehrer, Paxson, DeRose, Dretske, Klein and Chisolm.

4 out of 5 stars A good emersion into epistomology.......2006-03-08

This book is great for an overview of the different issues that are dealt with in the study of knowledge. It takes a great sampling of those philosophers that have made a lot of contributions to the field. My only issue with the text is that it only seems to wet your appetite for the material before they move on to the next topic.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Anthology of Epistemology and Its History.......2004-05-31

Huemer's anthology is intended to complement Robert Audi's introduction to the epistemology in the Routledge Contemporary Introductions to Philosophy series. And, as one would expect, it is an ideal text to be read in conjunction with Audi's book. Almost all the subjects discussed in that book--the exceptions being moral and religious knowledge--are given corresponding sections in this anthology. Nevertheless, I see no reason why this book needs to be used in conjunction with the other book. It is a perfectly fine selection of readings for a person who wants a picture of some of the main areas of debate in epistemology. For those who may be coming to the book without the background provided by reading Audi's introductory text, Huemer provides a short introduction to the subject matter of each chapter. And it seems he has chosen historical selections that help the reader to understand the nature of the problems being discussed in each of the sections and why someone might think those problems are important ones.

A signal virtue of this book is that it is helpful in introducing both contemporary and historical work in epistemology. Is it somewhat paradoxical that almost half of a volume in a series called Routledge Contemporary Readings in Philosophy should consist of historical papers? Somewhat so, perhaps, but it isn't all that surprising in a philosophy text. For, as any student of philosophy can tell you, the history of philosophy isn't just history; it's also crucial for understanding the nature of the problems with which philosophers are dealing and the possible solutions that can be offered in response to those problems. And this volume is quite good at introducing the history of philosophical thought about the nature, structure, and varieties of human knowledge. Its coverage of the history of the subject in modern philosophy is especially good, as it includes several selections from Hume and from Reid, along with selections from Locke, Berkeley, Kant. It also provides the reader with a introduction to the history of epistemological thought in the twentieth century, as it includes work by important figures from the earlier part of the century--Russell, Moore, and Ayer--and work by important mid-century figures, like Quine, Austin, and Goodman. Huemer also throws in a few selections from the ancients.

Though this volume is not edited by the author of the Routledge Contemporary Introductions to Philosophy, it is intended as a companion volume to that book. It takes its form Audi's introduction, in that it shifts the usual focus in introducing epistemology to the beginning student of the subject. Instead of beginning with skeptical challenges and with general issues about the nature and structure of knowledge, this volume, like Audi's introduction, begins by focusing on more particular forms of knowledge and the ways in which we can acquire them. Huemer has included sections on each of the following types of knowledge: knowledge acquired through perception, through memory, through the testimony of others, through reason (i.e. and a priori knowledge), and through inductive inferences. Most of the historical material is in these sections of the anthology--but all of these sections include at least a couple papers by contemporary figures as well.

The latter half of the volume concerns the general issues about the nature and structure of knowledge on which contemporary epistemologists tend to focus their research. Here the discussion is on the usual topics: foundationalism vs. coherentism, skepticism, the analysis of knowledge. These sections tend to include more readings than the sections discussed above, and thus, even though only half the anthology is concerned with these general issues, it still provides an excellent introduction to them. The reader should note that there isn't any separate section on internalist vs. externalist accounts of knowledge, though this topic comes up in both the section on skepticism and the section on the analysis of knowledge.

This is a very good anthology, and it's especially good for the price. It covers quite a bit of material, and it covers it quite well. The only possible problem one might have with this anthology is that its coverage of contemporary epistemology isn't as extensive as it might have been. But, importantly, it is intended as an introduction to work in both contemporary and historical epistemology rather than as an exhaustive survey of the subject. (For a more in-depth anthology in contemporary epistemology, check out the Epistemology volume edited by Sosa and Kim and published in Blackwell's Philosophy Anthologies series.)

I'd recommend this anthology for classes aimed at undergraduate students and for anyone with some philosophical background who's interested in epistemology.

4 out of 5 stars Good collection; a little incomplete........2007-02-23

This anthology of metaphysics essays is pretty essential for any college student involved in the subject. I can't really imagine the average person pleasure reading metaphysics essays for fun, so I wouldn't make that recommendation to casual readers. However, for the interested metaphysician or for the starving college senior in dire need of additional sources for his/her thesis this book is pretty essential. Goes especially in detail on the universal/particular debate, and explores theories of time especially well.

4 out of 5 stars Very Useful Introductory Anthology.......2004-05-31

This volume is intended to be read in conjunction with Loux's capable introduction to the metaphysics in the Routledge Contemporary Introductions to Philosophy series. And, of course, it is an ideal text to be read in conjunction with that book. The subjects discussed in that book are given sections in this anthology, and Loux includes many, though not all, of the primary sources on which he relied in that book. Nevertheless, I see no reason why this book has to be read in conjunction with the other book. It is a perfectly fine selection of readings for a person who wants a picture of some of the main areas of debate in contemporary analytic metaphysics. Loux has provided a brief (roughly ten-page) introduction to each of the topics on which there are readings. Some of these introductions sketch the problems and quickly describe the main theses of each of the readings and how the readings relate to one other, and others simply provide a general overview of the problems without saying much about the particular readings. But all of these introductions, which are intended to explain and motivate the problem(s) to which the particular selections respond, should be very helpful to the beginner, and they probably provide enough background to begin reading the selections even if one has had no prior experience in these areas. So while this anthology doesn't cover everything of interest in contemporary metaphysics, it includes selections on enough topics that it provides the reader with a sense of what is going on in analytic metaphysics at the moment.

The subjects covered in this anthology are universals, particulars, possible worlds, time, persistence through time, and global realism vs. anti-realism. Most of the sections include four or five readings apiece, and Loux has wisely decided not to dumb down this volume by selecting only works written for beginners. The individual selections, which primarily come from journal argues and monographs on the particular subjects, aren't easy, but most of them aren't forbiddingly difficult either. They should be accessible to anyone who has had a little philosophy and who carefully reads Loux's introductions to the particular sections. (It would, of course, help to read through the relevant sections in Loux's textbook before tackling the particular selections in this volume.) Furthermore, he has wisely selected work that has been very influential but that isn't overly technical. Most of the selections here are by important figures (Russell, Quine, Putnam, Lewis, Dummett, Plantinga, Kripke, Armstrong, van Inwagen, et al.) in the field, and many of them concern views that have set the agenda in these debates.

But the reader should note that Loux has not included any work from the historical figures he discusses in his book. This is an anthology of selections in contemporary metaphysics, and so it does not include selections from important historical figures in the field. The reader should also note that Loux does not include any readings on the general structure and methods of metaphysical inquiry, though this is one of the subjects frequently discussed in his textbook. Naturally, though, the reader should acquire a sense of the general structure and methods of metaphysics by reading the various selections included here. But if you're looking for more explicit coverage of these issues, you'll need to look elsewhere.

This is a very nice anthology, and it's especially good for the price. It's not as extensive as it might have been--but, then again, it is intended as an introduction to work in contemporary metaphysics and not as an exhaustive survey of the subject. (For a more in-depth and extensive anthology in contemporary metaphysics, check out the Metaphysics volume edited by Sosa and Kim and published in Blackwell's Philosophy Anthologies series.) I'd recommend this anthology for classes aimed at advanced undergraduate students and for anyone with some philosophical background who's interested in the areas of contemporary metaphysics that it covers.

A handy collection of readings regarding the philosophical areas of Epistemology and Metaphysics that includes both historical and contemporary works, this book gives the reader a sense of how philosophical issues have evolved over time. Forty-eight selections from over 30 philosophers past and present deal with topics such as a priori knowledge, skepticism, foundationalism versus coherentism, universals, identity and change, causation, and the relationship between perception and the external world. An accessibly slim volume of some the most interesting works from philosophers past and present, this book should appeal to readers who are interested in the philosophical areas of metaphysics and epistemology.

                        Book Description

Philosophy of Mind: Contemporary Readings is a comprehensive anthology that draws together leading philosophers writing on the major topics within philosophy of mind. Robb and O'Connor have carefully chosen articles under the following headings:
                        *Substance Dualism and Idealism
                        *Materialism
                        *Mind and Representation
                        *Consciousness
Each section is prefaced by an introductory essay by the editors which guides the student gently into the topic in which leading philosophers are included.
The book is highly accessible and user-friendly and provides a broad-ranging exploration of the subject. Ideal for any philosophy student, this book will prove essential reading for any philosophy of mind course. The readings are designed to complement John Heil's Philosophy of Mind:A Contemporary Introduction, (Routledge 1998), although the anthology can also be used as a stand-alone volume.

The basic tools and concepts of metaphysics are employed in virtually every branch of philosophy, necessitating a basic understanding of metaphysics to completely understand any philosophical work. This volume is a comprehensive survey of contemporary thought on a wide range of issues and provides students with the basic background to current debates in metaphysics. An introductory essay by the editors offers an overview of the volume and introduces students to the major debates that are contained within the main body of the text. The collection contains classic contemporary papers on topics such as Ontological Commitment and Methodology, Possible Worlds and Possibilia, Properties and Universals, Substances, Events, Tropes and Mathematical Objects. It also includes seven newly-commissioned state-of-the-art articles by Van Inwagen, Lycan, Bealer, Loux, Lombard, Macdonald and Field.

                                Book Description

How does an object persist through change? How can a book, for example, open in the morning and shut in the afternoon, persist through a change that involves the incompatible properties of being open and being shut? The goal of this reader is to inform and reframe the philosophical debate around persistence; it presents influential accounts of the problem that range from classic papers by W. V. O. Quine, David Lewis, and Judith Jarvis Thomson to recent work by contemporary philosophers. The authors take on the question of persistence by examining three broad approaches: perdurantism, which holds that change over time is analogous to change over space; exdurantism, according to which identity over time is analogous to identity across possible worlds; and endurantism, which holds that ordinary objects persist by enduring. Each of these approaches appears to be coherent, but each also has its own metaphysical problems. Persistence includes papers that argue for perdurantism, exdurantism, or endurantism, as well as papers that explore some metaphysical difficulties challenging each account. In this way the collection allows readers to balance the trade-offs of each approach in terms of intuitiveness, theoretical attractiveness, and elegance.

                                Book Description

Epistemology, or the theory of knowledge, is concerned with how we know what we do and what justifies us in believing what we do. The philosophical literature in epistemology has mushroomed in the past four decades, and interest in the topic continues to be widespread. In this anthology, Fred Dretske and Sven Bernecker have collected the most important and influential writings in epistemology. It provides the fullest review to date of contemporary epistemology, including frequently neglected topics such as dominant responses to scepticism, introspection, memory, and testimony. Forty-one readings are organized into fifteen subject areas that are key to a broad understanding of contemporary theory of knowledge. A readable introduction to each subject outlines the problems discussed in the essays that follow so readers can more effectively focus on analysing them. The book is primarily designed for undergraduate courses on theories of knowledge. It will also be of use to university students in other fields as well as interested general readers.

5 out of 5 stars How we know what we know - or why we shouldn't know what we know.......2005-11-15

This is a fabulous text on epistemology. There are 41 articles divided into five parts: Justified True Belief, Externalism and Internalism, Foundations and Norms, Scepticism, and Sources of Knowledge.

This book was one of a couple books required for my "Theories of Knowledge and Reality" class that I took in undergraduate school. I have not read every artical in the book but I have read many to most of them.

Some of the brightest philosophers are featured in this text: Dretske, Putnam, and Quine. Some of the most interesting and best presented arguments are "Knowledge and Scepticism," by Robert Nozick; "Brains in a Vat," by Hilary Putnam; and "A Priori Knowledge, necessity, and contingency," by Saul Kripke.

With such a wide range of topics that cover the vast range of epistemology discussed inside this book, the quality of the authors, and of course, the foundations and sound arguments made, I consider this a complete text on philosophy. It is possible and plausible that you, as the reader, may have read some of these articles before. However, it is a good compilation all in one edition.

I also recommend "Metaphysics: An Anthology," edited by Jaegwon Kim and Ernest Sosa. It is a collection of articles and essays that cover another broad topic in philosophy.

If by chance you are deciding on buying this book or not based on my review, please keep in mind that I am not a scholar of philosophy, just a "casual" reader of the subject.
