The book I recieved & the book I ordered were different, but the model I needed happened to be in it. So i'm still happy w/ purchase. 7 days from payment to mailbox.
Limited Electrical.......2003-08-17
The book barely mentioned the trip/mileage computer much less what to do to troubleshoot, remove and replace or what else might cause a blank screen. I was very disappointed that even the wiring diagrams showed nothing concerning this unit. Also to try and track down the circuit involved the book gave no help on basics such as the fuses involved.

The manual covers too many vehicles in general with little detail for specifics. It's difficult to find what your looking for. If you need a manual, try the dealer. I've had bad luck with Chilton in the past, I should have known.
Easy does it..........2002-04-08
I recently purchased a 1997 Expedition, but couldn't find the owners manual. I ordered this book with hopes of clarifying some basic information. I think this book has quite a bit of data, but it is hard to read, index, and otherwise unfriendly. For example, the fuse box section does not tell you which fuses relate to which piece of equipment, making troubleshooting tough. The section on sizes and capacities is so small and marked with footnotes, I still don't know what size fuel tank I have. Also, too many models covered in this manual that aren't important to me, and too few pictures. I'm gonna try the Haynes version.

I used this as a beginner, and although I found the explanations at times confusing, working through the practice problems and making my own sights made it clear what to do. A great resource to have, though not one to learn basic theory from. But then again, this is not the purpose of this publication, either.
Everything you need in a compact, easy-to-use handbook.......2007-07-20
This excellent "manual" contains everything needed to perform celestial navigation at sea, or to practice the skills at home. The manual contains an instructional section at the beginning describing the process, followed by complete tables and nautical almanac for 2003-2007, providing everything needed to plot one's position with nothing more than a pencil, paper, and of course the sextant.
I took this book on my single-handed cruise to the Bahamas in 2006, as a back-up to my GPS, and also for practice and the fun and challenge of navigating by the stars. While my GPS never failed me in open water sailing, I still plotted my position by sun and stars several times on the trip, and was very greatful to have everything I needed in one compact book, given how extremely precious space on a small sailboat can be.
One consideration is that the instructions at the beginning will not give nearly as in-depth a lesson into the theory and complexities of celestial navigation as other purely instructional books will give. The book will, however, provide complete instruction for a rusty mind that hasn't performed a sight reduction in a long time, or someone who otherwise has some grasp on the concept. I personally learned celestial navigation simply from a few online instructional sites that give general overviews along with the instructions in this book. I rate the book at 5 stars because I think the "instructional" section is the perfect length for a book of this purpose.
The Complete On-Board Celestial Navigator is an excellent "everything but the sextant" handbook to use for recreational or back-up celestial navigation in today's world.
Good Resource for Intermediate to Advanced Navigator.......2006-08-26
Excellent resource if you wish to manually navigate or if you find yourself in a situation which precludes using GPS.
Complete and compact and very terse.......2006-08-10
I bought this because it combines the functions of nautical almanac and sight reduction tables in one slender volume. It provides five years of star data, sample worksheets and lots of worked out examples. So it's a lot easier than hauling around Nautical Almanacs and 3-volume sight reduction tables.
The tables trade compactness for accuracy. Sights and positions are taken to the nearest minute of latitude or longitude, rather than 10ths of minutes in the standard celestial navigation tables. I don't mind the loss of accuracy; my sights are pretty loose to begin with, and it's hard to imagine an emergency short of nuclear war where I'd actually have to depend on celestial navigation. I'm learning it only because I want to do a Transpac race and the rules require that four lines of position be determined during the race.
Also, to keep the tables small, the sight reduction methodology is non-standard and requires a few extra steps compared to the normal "Bowditch-approved" method. The geometry behind them is completely opaque, so you have to take them on faith unless you are a true expert in celestial navigation techniques. But, once you get the hang of it, it's a straightforward sequence of arithmetic sums.
The author includes a couple of methods for determining azimuth, one by table lookup and one by the use of "Weir diagrams." The latter look interesting but the explanation in the book is completely incomprehensible and I couldn't find another reference that even mentioned them.

Captivating and inspirational, but ultimately disappointing.......2007-07-29
The Handbook of the Navigator by Eric Pepin is interesting and inspirational and I recommend that it be read by anyone who is on or contemplating a spiritual/metaphysical path - especially those who are new to spiritual development - but it should be read with an open and questioning mind. The book seems to have blended material gathered from numerous other books, workshops and websites: Ramtha: The White Book; A Beginner's Guide to Creating Reality, Third Edition; Prometheus Rising; The Ultimate Journey; Far Journeys; Mastering Astral Projection: 90-day Guide to Out-of-Body Experience; Energy Work: The Secret of Healing and Spiritual Development; The Secret of the Soul: Using Out-of-Body Experiences to Understand Our True Nature - to name just a few.
Had the book actually delivered on its numerous claims, or eliminated those claims, it could have rated five stars; however, the book failed to "deliver the ultimate spiritual experience" or "demonstrate how to directly plug into an empowering and limitless 'Force'" or "direct the reader into an altered state of consciousness," which claims appear on its dust covers.
I was disappointed regarding other claims made within the book and I suspect that the book is primarily a marketing tool for the author's other products.
I recommend that you download the free PDF version of Handbook of the Navigator from the author's website rather than paying for a hard copy.
The Ultimate Spiritual Experience?.......2007-07-02
I stumbled across the website of the author of this book while surfing the web. The author apparently earns a handsome income by selling cd's over the Internet. I was a bit suspicious about all the claims like "most users experience their first out of body experience in the first 2 weeks" and "offer expires soon - act now" slogans. But I could try the materials, including the book "Handbook of The Navigator" out for free, which I did. I tried out the meditation file three times and asked for a refund. OK, now about the book.
The only good things about the book are that it is reasonably well written and offers some interesting viewpoints. Most of the material, however, is mostly Hindu theology mixed in with some terminology from (sic) the Star Wars movies. The whole concept of developing ESP powers through meditation is nothing new. However, it is a path that should be approached carefully. I never paid a dime for this book and I don't advise anyone to do so. The whole "you are a Navigator" talk sounds a lot like a Cult leader looking for followers.
It is not my intention to review the author, a self-professed psychic, here, only the book. But people interested in Eric Pepin and his teachings should type in his name in a search engine and see what information pops up. I did the same and what I read made me decide to stay away from the author, his teachings and his organization for ever.
My views about the book.......2007-03-18
I enjoyed the read. As with any title of this nature, it became highly controversial. Good. This only means that some are not ready for this material yet, if ever. What we call the "Holy Bible", is still being argued, deciphered, and with many revisions. Now, am not comparing "The Navigator" to the "Holy Bible", but the same principle of understanding, or lack of understanding applies. Once beyond certain aspects of the Bible (killing, rape, incest, and murder) one is still left with many unanswered questions about "God". I've raised the issues in my blogs (will list it, if allowed)
Razors Edge - [...] yes, I have read the Bible, and have tossed it out. But, did have to bring it back as a valuable book of reference. I classify the Bible, now, as required continuous reading. I see the Bible as a brilliant mix of fact, fiction and pure myth, that only needs greater depth of understanding. Not to say that I fully understand it, but now have a greater depth of comprehending it. After 2000 years, many are still totally in the dark on what it says, means, and is periodically revised [as if God wasn't able to speak with / or to his creation] In one fashion and in a left handed manner, "The Navigator" makes more sense than the Bible, in explaining the God concept. "The Navigator" picks up, at , what had been, my "stick" point, of the God concept.
A Powerful Work.......2007-01-20
It's up to each individual to consider a philosophy and decide if they believe it. Many of the teachings in this book cannot be proven scientifically. That said, as a very serious seeker of truth, I believe this book is one of the truest spiritual/philosophical books I have ever read. I've read a lot of spiritual books in my day and this one is definitely one of the best. I'm reading it for the second time and getting quite a bit more out of it than I did the first time. For the individual that desires to really have God lead him/her, aware of the value of independently exploring God's word. If you are totally content with merely going along with what others tell you about the Bible, then this book has little value for you. But, if you are aware that even the best intentioned Bible "studies" will have subtle influences, leading you unaware down their own roads of thought, then this book is for you.
In the index there is a really fantastic list of suggested reference materials. These are the tools one needs while pursuing a methodical, systematic study.
