5 out of 5 stars Excel VBA for Dummies Review - Excellent!.......2007-08-23

The book is very well written and has useful examples as well as many screen shots (pictures) to help you along the way. This book is exactly what it says it is - meant for the intermediate user, but written for a dummy! A+++

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-06-14

I found this book to be an excellent introduction to using VBA in Excel. The author provides clear and usable examples to illustrate what he's talking about and demonstrate good programming practices. Clearly written for beginners who have never really used VBA, this book will get you writing VBA in no time, and best of all, it's not some boring technical manual that threatens to put you to sleep.

5 out of 5 stars Fast delivery, excellent quality.......2007-01-10

The book arrived sooner than I expected and was in perfect condition.

    Thanks again!

4 out of 5 stars Great for beginners.......2007-01-05

This is not the book for building complex applications within Excel but that's not what I got it for. I wanted something that would get me started on understanding how to manuver within VBA and do some basic coding and this book fits the bill perfectly. It's amazing how many books there are on this subject that don't fill the need for a beginner.

    4 out of 5 stars good enough.......2006-11-03

the book doesn't tell you everything, but it tells you what you need to know to get started and get some things done. It is great resource to take you from zero knowledge to proficiency with the most commonly used VBA tasks. However, a VBA beginner will quickly outgrow this book and need to move on to John's more advanced VBA books.

5 out of 5 stars Every designer in my company has this book.......2007-09-17

This is by far the best book for analog designer. The only thing I wish to see is to include some simulation examples such as: AC analysis, noise analysis...

Also, as the technology moves to sub-micron, long channel approximation is no longer accurate. I wonder if author can comment on how to size the transistors for fewer spice iterations.

Maybe we will see them in the 2nd edition.

    5 out of 5 stars Grown appreciation.......2007-06-02

The more my knowledge grew, the more I have appreciated returning to this book as a reference compared to any of the others. Razavi's explanations are lucid and directly to the point allowing me to quickly recall/re-understand concepts that I either once grasped and forgot or never really understood in the first place.

3 out of 5 stars It is OK. There could be better ones.......2006-11-12

I have used this book in a graduate class. It is good and very rigorous. It has good amount of examples and plenty of end of chapter problems. It is a good treatment of the subject. However, it might be hard as introductory.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappoiting.......2006-03-07

The book is too theory-oriented; not suitable for engineers. I felt disappointed.

And the chapters on PLL and switched-cap. are too common-sense! No use at all for practising engineers...I don't want to recommend this book -

    5 out of 5 stars Great book........2006-01-29

    Difficult Side
Read Sedra/Smith book before trying this one. It is really hard to follow. It's hard to differentiate between small and large signal analysis, since author uses the same notation for both. Watch out!

    Good Side:
Book is on CMOS analog ICs, so it's specific.
Book is very thorough. Behzad Razavi explains the function of each resistor in a circuit. Book teaches on a high level. Author put in much effort.

1 out of 5 stars This is the worst book I have ever used in my enitire college career........2006-01-21

This book was awful. Concepts are confusing, examples are lacking, and most of the homework problems do not represent the material taught in the revelant chapter.

This book is terrible in getting across concepts and procedures relating to a variety of problems. One or two examples didn't help me work 20 hw problems, and on top of this the solutions aren't in the back of the book. you have to go on their website to get any supplementary material (which sucks just as bad). It will take forever just to get started on the homework problems because you will have to figure out how it even related to what was read in the chapter.

1 out of 5 stars This book is horrible!.......2005-10-02

This is the book we're reading in my first EE class, and it sucks. Maybe if I had a great professor that actually taught and walked us through the practice problems it wouldn't be so frustrating, but he doesn't, and it makes trying to go through the book EXTREMELY difficult.

There are huge gaps in information that show up in assigned problems, which I understand can help reinforce the learning process, but there are books that do it effectively and then there's this piece of crap.

The authours of this steaming pile of cow waste leave out important details that can cost a student literally hours in trying to figure out a solution only to discover that the reason for the incorrect answer is because the book failed to mention ANYTHING that might be helpful.

I can't relate how many times I went online and actually looked up information in OTHER books that were 1000000 times better than this POS.

An example, you ask? On the section on combining independent current sources, it mentions (in about 2 sentences) that current sources should be combined when in parallel. That's fine and dandy, but what it doesn't tell you is that when you're doing ANY PROBLEM where current is in question, you've got to add any current sources BACK in to the answer, depending on where they appear in the circuit, or you'll get garbage as a result.

Is this common sense? Sure, I guess, if you've already taken the class and already understand circuit analysis. If you haven't and you don't, the authors apparently decided to leave you up s@#t creek without a paddle after robbing you blind.

If you're taking an EE class and see that this is the text, check out the professor before you take it, or you'll be sorry.

    1 out of 5 stars POOR BOOK.......2004-06-26

I am forced to buy this book because my class requires it. Otherwise I wouldn't have bought this book. I can get better than or as good as this book for quarter of its price. The answer to problems doesn't come with the book (not a SINGLE solution to any of the problems) so there's no way of checking if you're finding a corrent solution to the problem which is most important aspect of learning. SO WATCH OUT BEFORE YOU BUY! (As u know most science books provide a odd number solutions to check the answers to problems and teachers give even number problem for HW) The link on the book promises student problem companion, but I had to purchased it for extra 17.95$ to get it, but very few problems with solutions (5-6 problems per chapter) were offered. In other words I am ripped again. So every moment I use this book I smelled a greed for money. The website for this is confusing and unhelpful and resources that seems useful are priced. In the end I would recomment anything other rather than this book for someone who is serious about studying electronics.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent for anyone studying the basics of circuit analysis.......2004-05-21

Like the title itself says, this is an introductory book on Circuit Analysis. In the first year of my engineering graduation, I used this book for the subject of Basic Circuit Analysis and found it to be extremely helpful. I think I can even say that this book made my life a lot easier, since the author - J. David Irwin - did a very good job on explaining concepts and circuit analysis basic methods and laws very clearly.

The book is very well structred, objective and and the subjects are easily understandable for the reader with little or none electronic circuit knowledge: every chapter starts with an introduction and a list of helpful topics which the author named "Learning Goals"; then, everytime a new concept/law/method is introduced, the author tests the reader to see if he did comprehend what has been explained to him by presenting him with very basic exercices, "Learning by Doing"; the author also provides the reader with "Learning Hints" on a regular basis, which can be interpreted as algorithms to solve certain problems or simple hints for the reader to do the exercice correctly, avoiding typical mistakes; at last, when a resonable amount of concepts have been introduced, the book features many "Learing Examples" with resolutions (note that resolutions can be of an extreme importance when the reader cannot understand how a certain problem is solved).

«Basic Engineering Circuit Analysis» covers everything that a book of this kind (introductory book) should cover, and even more, all in a clear way: basic concepts (quantities and electrical elements), resistive circuits (where the ohm and kirchhoff's laws are introduced), circuit analysis techniques (nodal and loop analysis), equivalent circuits (superposition, thévenin and norton's theorems), capacitance and inductance, first and second-order transcient circuits, AC steady-state analysis, magnetically coupled networks, steady-state power analysis, polyphase circuits, variable frequency network performance, the laplace and fourier tranforms (and applications to circuit analysis - e.g. bode diagrams), two-part networks and basic semiconductor circuits (diodes and transistors).

In my opinion, this is an excelent book for everyone who wants to study the basics of electrical circuit analysis. I highly recommend it for that purpose.

5 out of 5 stars Very Nicely Put Together.......2003-02-19

I feel like this book was very nicely put together. Those who believe otherwise are just slackers that have been given everything they needed in high school. This book is a GREAT book for a electrical engineering major, but just having this book will not make you more intelligent, you will need to take the time to read it to understand what's going on.

    5 out of 5 stars happy transaction.......2007-09-15

I am very satisfied with the transaction. The shipment was on time and the product is in good quality

    4 out of 5 stars Useful .......2007-07-12

The book is useful. The worksheets downloaded from the Internet are also very clear.
Sometimes you expect more explanations on statements which use new features not connected with the subject being reviewed.
I think that I shall not need to purchase any other book on this subject.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive! A wealth of key information and examples.......2006-10-04

I found this book to be one of the best references for Excel VBA development. The book is easy to understand and follow. Contains a large amount of examples that can be easily understood. Addresses many critical aspects of excel VBA development. Not too much was spent on forms/GUI development so you will have to look elsewhere if you into that. Also addresses interfacing Excel to databases using ADO as well as API programming which is critical for superusers to extend the power of excel without the limitation of data storage. Overall, the authors have a superb job and I consider this book to be an essential of my Excel VBA library!

    3 out of 5 stars Somewhat disjointed.......2006-06-25

The first few chapters were a reasonable introduction to VBA for Excel, but after that, the examples, while being quite relevant and useful, seemed somewhat random, and did not strike me as being well supported by the text.

I think that those who are looking for an abundance of code examples will be reasonably happy. The book is full of code handling tasks that most Excel VBA programmers will need to find solutions to. Those looking for a tutorial, for examples of good coding practice and principles, and an understanding of the underlying principles of VBA in the Excel environment, should probably look elsewhere.

Walkenbach's Power Programming is excellent. VBA for Modelers, by Albright, is a book that does a great job of combining theory and practical code examples for me. For people looking for advanced material, Excel with VBA & .NET by Jeff Webb, and Professional Excel Developement by Bullen, Bovey and Green are very good.

5 out of 5 stars Fundamentals to Advanced Excel VBA - a great book.......2007-10-09

This is a great book. I've been programming in Excel VBA since about 1997. I've never had a formal class on writing Visual Basic or VBA code so I've always scratched through on my own flipping back and forth through Visual Basic books and searching through the index like crazy to find out what I needed. Programming in VBA started out as a hobby for me. Most books just state Visual Basic info and don't go into much detail. Walkenbach does a great job, especially for beginners that already have a little bit of experience with VBA. He starts out with the fundamentals and builds on them and gives plenty of example code. This helps give the reader a good grasp of how Excel's VBA environment truly works and it totally changed my perspective as far as how I program. Visual Basic books don't specifically target on Excel like this book does and VB is not necessarily exactly the same as VBA.

If you're just starting to learn VBA for Excel, then this book is worth every penny you pay and more. I have about 4 other books on VBA and I'd trade about all of them in for this one book. I definitely recommend reading about turning the automatic updating off and I think most beginners will find Chapter 11 regarding working with ranges EXTREMELY useful, especially the portion about transferring the data to a variant array for computation then back to the range for much faster macro speeds.

If you are starting out in Excel VBA, I definitely recommend this be the first book that you read.

    4 out of 5 stars Jelen & Walkenbach.......2007-09-30

This book plus Bill Jelen's "VBA and Macros for Microsoft Excel (Business Solutions)" makes for a complete volume on this subject. Walkenbach's book alone is not enough. Take it to the next level with Bullen/Bovey/Green's "Professional Excel Development."

    5 out of 5 stars Best Excel 2003 book.......2007-07-03

Best ever book on Excel 2003. Mr. Walkenbach clearly is THE guru of Excel. Until I wanted to learn VBA, I never paid much attention to Excel books. Since then I've done a lot of reading and this is by far the best, not just about VBA, but all aspects of Excel. Even reading about things I thought I knew a lot about was helpful and revealing. His writing is clear, witty, simple and to the point. I hold the user manual for cpm's SuperCalc as the gold standard of software manual clarity - even though this is ten times bigger, it's just as good. Well done. Highly recommended - thank you Mr. Walkenbach.

Thorough and clear reference guide. Highly recommended for anyone using (or wanting to use) VBA to automate or "slick-up" excel applications.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-02-10

Excelent book to learn the capabilities of Excel VBA. I learnt VBA by viewing online examples and worked my way up to developing a small purchase system, which connects to databases. This book has taught me with good examples a way to better organize my code, and find new ways to do certain tasks.
I would definitely recomend this book to begginers and intermediate users to learn in a clean and simple way. I dont consider myself and advanced user, so don't know what kind of books these people use, but I am sure they would give it a thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars This book is worth every penny.......2005-11-10

This book is oriented for those with basic knowledges of Excel and some general understanding of Visual Basic (Visual Basic 6 not Visual Basic .NET). However, the examples are simple, sequential and conductive for constructing basic applications even if you have never used Visual Basic before.

Let the Author, Mr. John Walkenback, take you through the first 7 Chapters, type in the examples as you go, and you will rip the benefits.

1 out of 5 stars No real life examples.......2004-04-01

This book sucks! Its just a little better than the help file included in with Excel. All he does is put it in a diffrent order. I was expecting small excercises where I could put my new skills all together, but there is none. So you read the whole book, remember as much as you can, and go off and try to mix and match hundreds of commands... buy another one.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent manual for intermediate and higher programmers!.......2004-02-20

This is a great manual for those who, at a minimum, have a limited knowledge of Visual Basic and a limited working knowledge of Excel. If you don't consider yourself an expert then this is the book for you!

I've taught myself multiple computer languages (English is my natural language but that doesn't really matter now, does it?) and am very familiar with Excel -- but not so much on the programming side of things. As far as being a VB programmer, well, about two or three years ago I taught myself VB 5.0 and then never ended up needing to use it. The first time I used this book was to help me with a VB module in a customers Excel workbook. There was even an example in this book about using the Windows API to get the window to search for a directory which I was able to easily incorporate into the code. I then started reading through the chapters and just kept on learning more and more! When working on a project I can easily find a relevant chapter/section that pertains to what I'm doing or need and solve my problem!

He clearly explains his code and if the example is a code snipet. The included CD contains his examples and other files which I find very helpful, especially when I don't want to type in everything myself :-)

If you even *think* this may be a candidate for your library then stop thinking and just get it!

    5 out of 5 stars Bravo!.......2004-02-07

Outstanding reference and how to manual for Excel macro programming. A must have for anyone who has ambitions of writing their own programs for Excel. John's clear, organized, and comprehensible writing style allows even a novice programmer to immediately begin to write Excel macros that really do something, and do something useful. His book is chock full of useful code examples. Get two copies. It is that good.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for non-programmers.......2003-10-15

This book can be included in the handy tool category, a "must have" for non-programmers who want to give their Excel applications a professional look as well as get the most out of Excel without wasting much time and effort. Word of caution, a bit of familiarity with visual basic as a language and the controls etc. will be very helpful in using this book. Codes in the CD are very helpful. It is written by a practicing professional from usage point of view hence a very easy reading book and not heavy on the jargons of object oriented programming etc. I learned a lot of useful tricks after going through the book.

    Book Description

The study of the electronic structure of materials is at a momentous stage, with the emergence of new computational methods and theoretical approaches. This volume provides an introduction to the field and describes its conceptual framework, the capabilities of present methods, limitations, and challenges for the future. Many properties of materials can now be determined directly from the fundamental equations of quantum mechanics, bringing new insights into critical problems in physics, chemistry, and materials science.

    4 out of 5 stars A Gr8 Book on DFT Concepts.......2007-07-05

I like this book and would recommend it to any beginner into density functional theory. It explains all the modern electronic structure techniques in a rather simple language. Its much more easier and quicker than going into hundreds of papers and not knowing where to start.

The biggest issue with this book is a rather poor organisational structure to the book. That's why I've given it a 4/5 rating. There are some concepts that have been easily thrown in at the end, into the appendices.. and having to turn pages too frequently can be annoying.

But the good work has been done & I'd ask Mr Martin to re-organise the content.

This book has the potential to be a classic.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-03-21

As a graduate student attempting to learn density functional theory and its use in computer programmes, I have found this book to be an excellent addition to my library. Well structured and written.

    2 out of 5 stars Not impressive.......2005-06-30

Although the topics the book embrasses are current and essential for practising chemists, physisists and materials scientists the pedagogic care with which it explains some of the topics is poor.

The author makes the assumption that the reader is familiarized with the heavy mathematical formalism and notation which is commonplace in specialized physics articles but fails to remember that graduate students that don't have a physics background, and come from other schools of thought such as chemistry, biochemistry or materials science, might be target readers.

For instance the book's introduction to Hartree-Fock theory must be the most complicated I've ever seen with constant recourse to Dirac's delta function (without even revealing its presence, stating simply that it should be there). The link between DFT and statistical thermodynamics although interesting is not essential for the heart of the discussion. Some classic program applications like Siesta are presented but you get the feeling that it's just for show off.

All in all if you're a physicist with some years of experience in the field of planewave computation you might find the book interesting.

Otherwise if you're a beginner like me forget it! The book by Efthimios Kaxiras (Atomic and Electronic Structure of Solids) is more revealing and pedagogic and supplies every detail in the mathematical formalism. Some physicists with a more chemical sensitivity such as Harrison, chemists such as Roald Hoffmann, Jeremy Burdett or Michael Springborg or materials scientists like Adrian Sutton or David Pettifor are better suited for the novice.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2004-07-07

This book was recommended to me to help me in my research, and has turned out to be one of the best recommendations I have ever received. This is a great book; by far the best I have come across on the topic of computing the properties of condensed phase materials by quantum mechanical simulations. Here are the reasons why.

    1. The chapters are well laid out and one chapter flows neatly to the next.

    2. The math is kept to a minimum; the author makes a point of communicating important principles and ideas in concise sentences without resorting to derivations. This is ideal for engineers like me; who by training do not know that much math as compared to physicists who specialize in the solid state.

    3. Important ideas are clarified up front. Many texts will lead the reader through long and windy paths of proofs and logic before arriving at the conclusion; thereby losing their reader in the process. Not here; important points are stated clearly at the beginning and at the end of each section.

    4. Compare, contrast, and context. There are many ideas, models, approximations, and theorems that have been developed in the past century related to electronic structure. Many of these are closely related to each other in their inspiration, derivation, practice, and/or applications. This book makes the connections between the different concepts. For a non-expert reading through the electronic structure literature, terms like APW, OPW, PAW, LAPW, LMTO, etc... can be quite confusing if not placed within an overriding context. This book provides that context.

    5. Good use of appendices. Electronic structure is a lot like politics; most practicioners in either field did not receive formal educations in the subject, but instead got into it under the apprenticeship of other people. This is reflected by a lot of literature by those who succeeded in the field; most of it good in showing of the authors' achievements, but generally useless in preparing the next generation of practicioners. For electronic structure, this is manifested by the many books that require prior knowledge of quantum, thermo, crystallography, mat sci, etc.. In effect, these books were written by experts to be read by other experts. Not this book. Basic ideas are kept in the text; and specific proofs and derivations are kept in the appendices. The result is a text that is much easier to read than most others.

    6. The book is concept driven; not application driven. Most texts in materials simulations are actually a compilation of chapters written independently by multiple authors. Each chapter might be given a general title; but the text will be bias towards the research of its authors. For example, a chapter on surface calculations might focus entirely on adsorption, or relaxation/reconstruction, or optical properties; but surely not touching all these subjects. This book does not do this; each chapter is driven by basic concepts, and one concept leads to the next.

In all, this is a great textbook and a handy reference book. I highly recommend it.

If you've mastered Excel and need to develop customized applications, Microsoft Excel 2000 Power Programming with VBA should have a place by your side. Written by noted Excel expert and PC World columnist John Walkenbach, it will thrust you deep into the inner workings of Excel and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to get you writing code immediately.

Somewhat text-heavy (as programming books tend to be), it still contains a number of good illustrations and screenshots to effectively teach you. The first three sections cover the fundamentals of Excel and VBA; the next three deal with programming and development topics such as user forms, pivot tables, and event handling; the final section covers miscellaneous issues like compatibility, file manipulation, and class modules.

The five appendices are useful for referencing Excel and VBA information, and the accompanying CD-ROM contains all the code and files you'll need to work through the book, not to mention the shareware version of Walkenbach's Power Utility Pack. (The full version is available through a free offer.) Nobody ever said programming was easy, but with Microsoft Excel 2000 Power Programming with VBA it's a lot simpler. --Rob Lightner

I have just started using Excel at work for more than just listing data in a spreadsheet. This book is very good for getting you started writing code behind the surface of Excel. It takes you step by step. It is layed out in a logical sequence for writing VBA code. I have a background in programming, so that may help in following the examples given in this book. I am a Mainframe programmer starting to crossover into the world of client/server. I use this book as my main reference along with "help" in Excel.

5 out of 5 stars Bought in 2000, still uses it in 2007!.......2007-03-27

Even though I bought this book in 2000, its proved to be an invaluable resource to constantly go back to. Much of the coding still works for Excel 2003.

Definitly a book of reference for me because it breaks down what I want to know about without droning on. There's also code snippets that are very helpful too.

The book is also easily searchable by topic which I like because there are times I want to know something really fast and not have to sit there and leaf through loads and loads of pages.

I'll agree that it dosen't cover charts as much, and if thats the focus you probably won't find what you want here.

Initally I had looked for an updated book when I got Office 2003 but found I really didn't need to because the info is still relevant.

    4 out of 5 stars A good beginner's book.......2007-01-01

This is an excellent book for beginning VBA programmers or Excel experts who want to add some VBA to their spreadsheets. Even though it does have a lot of basic introductory code and the author usually explains what each function does, a lot of times I felt that code was being thrown at me with not much explanation about why I would need it. So far the code I've borrowed from the book seems to be working in Excel 2000/2002/2003. The examples are a bit basic, so advanced users should probably stay away from this book and stick to the many other advanced books out there (like 'Professional Excel Development'). The initial read was frustrating because the first 100 pages are about the history of Windows and other non-VB info, but once it gets going, it's an excellent resource. Overall I recommend the book to beginners who want to start programming.

The book is well structured to cover the exam topics. It does, however, omit certain details in some topics which would be unclear from just the book alone if I didn't already know them or didn't find some better explanations elsewhere online. You'll need some additional resource, including .NET class library online reference and online tutorials to fully understand certain topics.

    4 out of 5 stars Pretty decent.......2005-10-17

I've not finished reading this book yet, nor have I completed all exercises. Already having a fair bit of experience with .NET and ASP.NET I can see that this book covers only the basics, though it seems to cover them quite well. I have, however, found a few code errors in the examples, which I feel detracts a fair bit from the overall quality of the book.

5 out of 5 stars A decent book if you FULLY utilize and understand it.......2005-07-26

I just passed the exam with a pretty nice score 1.5 hours ago, and relied solely on this book for preparing for the exam for 10 days. I have solid background in Web development and use of C#. That said, here is my very personal comment:

    - The quality of this book is beyond my doubt. The book might have two errors that I think I saw when I read it the 2nd time, though I wasn't 100% sure. Other than that, I didn't find any errors/typos/mistakes in it. Many subtle issues are explained in the book in a way very easy to understand.

    - looking back, I believe that if one wants to pass the exam with ease by using this book, one'd be much better off by doing and studying all the questions that come with the CD. I'm a bit regretful that I didn't finish up most of the electronic practice questions.

    - I don't know any other book on the same subject. But looking back, I feel the book (including all the materials included with it) was perfect to help me pass the exam. I have no doubt that without the help of this book (or similar), I wouldn't have been able to pass the exam.

Overall: the paper book alone may or may not be enough for anyone to rely on for passing the cert exam, but if you have taken advantage of all the materials that come with the book and if you have *FULLY* understood what is covered in the book, you'll be almost quaranteed to pass the exam on your very first try. I may be wrong on this because different people have different backgrounds, but that's what I believe while looking back.
