Elementary statistics-not.......2007-08-28
This book was for a elementary statistics class. This book to me was not easy to use. The examples where very hard to follow and didn't make sense most of the time. The book was used for a online stats class thank god my professor provided great notes and examples, cause if I had to just depend on this books examples I would have made a BIG FAT "F". The author should think about making this book more user friendly.
Trash -- utter trash........2007-04-16
I am saddened to see the textbook community to mistake color, flash, graphics, and artifical examples as quality textbook. Although I understand they need to market, this book demonstrates the effect of marketing upon education.
My students complain that the text is difficult to read. Although I know they are new, I have to agree with their opinion. I sat and read the text -- and found it lacking respectable composition and clarity. I feel for my students and will not use the text again.
In addition, the examples are useless. They match the homework at the end of the chapter, but only "teach to the test". What's the point if the student don't learn methods on how to critically think and approach problems? Oh wow, they know what P(Z>1) is, but what do they know to do with it? Nothing!
Perhaps it is time for the educational community to produce their own compact books, customized to what students (and not publishers) need. I cannot recommend this book for anyone and would beg you to reconsider.
Does the trick.......2007-03-21
I think it's a well written book and it simplifies concepts well enough so that you can understand them better.
Elementary Statistics .......2007-02-22
This was the worst book I have ever come across. The only thing this "book" had was definitions in it. Definitions are fine for other subject, but not for a math subject where formulas are important. I am also disappointed at the fact that this was not a text, but a "study guide" for the text. perhaps this would be useful for someone who was going to take a CLEP test or something.
Really good book for a basic course!.......2007-01-03
I purchased this book for a basic statistic course. It's easy to understand and the best way to get an idea of statistic without long formulas or derivations. Recommandable for basic and intermediate stat-classes!

It 's the only reason I passed Elementary Statistics.......2006-02-22
I had to teach myself statistics the first time around and this book deserves sole credit for my passing grade. Furthermore, I was able to use this book to teach my classmates and everyone passed the course, a first with that professor. I used the book as tutor at more than one school, as well. Highly recommended!
Great book for begining stats!.......2005-12-26
This text is very well written with detailed information broken down enough for anyone to understand, begining with explaining basic concepts, discussing how statistics can be used in specific simple scenarios. As you progress in the text, Triola utilizes the same scenarios by adding on to the complexity that is involved as you learn more. The sections within each chapter is broken down to explain major concepts without confusing the reader as you progress from chapter to chapter. As expected, definitions, theories, and helpful hints and good examples throughout the text enhance and reinforce the learning experience. Triola also incorporates a technology section at the end of the chaters, enabling you to use Excel or the TI-83 Plus to calculate a formula that would otherwise take you 20-30 minutes to do by hand.
I used this book for an online course, and with that online course, the publishers had developed the quizes, calculator exercises, and tests that go along with this curriculum. The reason why I hadn't given this text 5 stars is because of the errors that I have found throughout the text....I guess the good part is, the text taught me enough to correct their own mistakes.
Book Is Great!!.......2005-09-18
This book came fast and in awesome condition. It has helped a lot with class and I'm glad that I bought this item!
Elementary Statistics.......2005-08-27
Elementary Statistics with StatDisk is a very well laid out text making the introduction to new concepts easy. The text assists with Excel, TI-83 family of caluculators and gives comprehensive tips for using StatDisk. Z tables are included with the text on heavy paper stock.
Good start in STATS.......2005-08-27
I used the 8th edition in my intro STATS class a year ago and I loved the book. I found that he talks about the meaning of stuff and not just gives quick excel fixes like a lot of intro STAT books. He does go over how to do the problem on the TI-83 but he still goes over the formulas and how you can do with out. In my last intro stats book my department had it talked too much about excel and the calculator making students forget that this is math and not just plug in the number

A Disorganized and Confusing Textbook........2005-09-01
Explanations of concepts are constantly interrupted mid-paragraph by various secondary explanations, questions and diagrams that do not tie in well with the central concept that was being explained. I find it very difficult to follow when each page is scattered with little side projects for the student to try with the cd-rom or with a calculator. Just glancing at any page it is hard to find the heart of the material. I much prefer a text that focuses on straight forward explanations of concepts rather than what seems to me as mere gimmicks.
Solid, but not spectacular textbook.......2005-01-06
I was assigned this book for use in teaching an introductory statistics course. The CD is quite good, containing a PowerPoint presentation outline for each chapter. It also has a section of excellent examples, but it only goes through the first three chapters, which is unfortunate.
Each chapter begins with a "Chapter Case Study", which I found to be worthless. The text and examples in each section & chapter are pretty good, about what would be expected from a textbook. What is different is the "Technology Instructions" inserted throughout, for doing stats with Minitab, Excel XP, and the TI-83 Plus calculator (which my school requires). It's needed, because the TI-83 manual is not very good.
Where the book could be better, for my class, is in describing how a student can verify his/her own work. Too many times students make a small mistake early in a problem, which leads to a non-sensical answer -- if the student stops to evaluate the meaning of it (for example, a probability greater than 1). Particularly in hypothesis testing, students frequently build the null and alternative hypotheses backwards, and then end up with a conclusion statement that clearly contradicts the data. While this book is very clear about a five-step approach to *doing* the test, it should have included a sixth step -- verifying that your answer makes sense!
Also, some of the problems and examples have errors, as well as vaguely worded questions. This seems to be (unfortunately) typical of all textbooks -- or maybe I'm just jaded.
Overall, it's a pretty decent book for a lower-level college statistics course. I would have given it 3.5 stars on its own. The CD is worth the extra half-star. If the CD examples went beyond chapter 3 through the whole book it would get five.

Best teacher guide EVER.......2007-09-15
This booklet provides vastly more instruction on the nitty-gritty of what teachers need in the classroom. Thank you!
Marzano is a must read........2007-09-10
I wish I would have heard of Robert Marzano my first year of teaching. This book explains the research behind the classroom instruction and gives you ideas of what you should do. This is a great book to have with the "Handbook for Classroom Instruction that Works".
Great resource!.......2007-05-12
After hearing so much in teacher in-services about "Marzano strategies" I decided to check out his work myself. I was struck by the simple fact they are not his strategies as people talk about. Instead, they are research supported strategies that he and other authors/researchers have compiled and shrunk down into some user-friendly nuggets. The book is very easy to read, provides ample sources of real research, and is practical. The layout is great and the content superb. It is an excellent resource for teachers looking to improve their instruction based on reliable and somewhat traditional methods.
Solid Resource for Educators.......2007-03-17
Provides tangible ideas that any educator can take into the classroom. I would also recommend any book by Kelly Gallagher.
Marzano's Classroom Instruction That Works.......2007-01-09
An excellent text for the first time teacher. Provides techniques and examples to assist in implementation of the techniques. Gives you more teaching tools for your toolbox. Easy to read, taking one chapter at a time. I highly recommend the book.

Good Book.......2007-10-05
This book arrived right on time. IT was in great condition, I was very pleased with my purchase.
Textbook.......2007-07-15
This is an easy to follow textbook for elementary statistics. There are a lot of examples and exercises provided.
:sigh:.......2007-05-27
Elementary Statistics was the book required for my class this semester and let me tell you - IT SUCKS!
This book pulls numbers out of thin air constantly and instead of telling you how to apply (or come up with) a formula it will just say something like "use a calculator to find ______"
I honestly learned more from google than from this book, and can't figure out why someone would make this required reading material for any class.
Get your act together!.......2007-02-26
This text is in its third edition, and the NUMEROUS wrong answers in back of the book still haven't been corrected!
Well organized, but inconsistent level. Elementary?.......2007-02-25
I was assigned this book for teaching my 100-level college intro-stats course. It is much better organized than the previous book I used, but it isn't as thorough. Some topics, such as calculating a median and other percentiles using depth on an ordered list, are simply omitted in this book.
It seems that some topics are omitted or glossed over because they might be too complex for "Elementary" statistics. On the other hand, the more complex topics in the book, such as hypothesis testing -- a topic that students consistently have a hard time understanding -- are not covered in enough depth.
Our students are sold this book in a package with videos on CD, a study guide, and a couple other things. This package is, in my opinion, worthless to a student in a class. They may be valuable to someone teaching themselves, or to a student in an online class, but for a live class, I think they are a waste of money.
The CD videos show a teacher working through the topics and some of the problems in the book. However, the teacher seems to have, (hands flail) y'know, a highly repetitive, (hands flail) y'know, (hands flail) vocabulary (hands flail), and it's (hands flail) y'know (hands flail) really hard to (hands flail) y'know, watch him (hands flail) y'know, teach. Like his hands have a nervous tic or something. I'm sure I have my own quirks in class, but this guy... his hands are something else.
All in all, I think the book is pretty good, with solid examples, well-highlighted definitions and key points. The chapter exercises are good in that they start VERY easy and progress through up to reasonably difficult, while staying within the limits of the text.
I told my department head: I like the book, but I recommend it without the bonus materials (and associated costs!).

I used this book for an online stats with ease........2004-05-31
I did not have the luxary of an instructor guide me through problems and have my questions clarified in class. I took the class online and I had no problem inderstanding how to wrok out the problems. It goes into detail on how to work out problems and gives examples step by step. There are also a lot of practice problems in the text with odd numbers answered for review. The CD in also a great learning advantage with some of the chapters with E-professor. Excellent to walk you through your stats course.
Excellent Statistics Book.......2004-03-22
Excellent college book and I intend to keep this in my library for future reference. This book was well done for the beginner and some advance users. This book covers many step-by-step solutions using excel and the "TI83 calculator."

Good book - lot's of mistakes.......2007-08-26
Most people taking a course like this use Rudin and this is a reasonable supplement but there is a good bit of errata that should be downloaded from the author's site. Pugh's "Real Mathematical Analysis" is an alternative.
Loved it as a student and as a professor.......2006-10-27
This was my favorite book as an undergraduate student and I've taught from it as a professor. It is an excellent geometric approach to analysis. It can even help students who have difficulty with epsilon delta proofs understand the geometric intuition behind them. The construction of the real line at the beginning is daunting for students who aren't clear about set theory and sequences already but a few supplementary materials can help the students out there (see my webpage notes on real analysis for example). The proofs are hidden which makes it a challenge for students to try prove everything themsleves before peeking at them, but they are available. Just remember to tell your students where they are!
As a student I loved the book because it allowed me to learn everything on the metric space level while allowing students who prefer to stay in Euclidean space to do that. Now I am a metric geometer.
very helpful book.......2006-05-31
I am using this book to teach myself analysis. Because my mathematical background is limited, I cannot assess what the book is missing, or whether alternative methods of presentation would be more insightful. But in terms of clarity and comprehensibility, the book does very well. The authors write very carefully and are not cryptic; the proofs and examples are well-presented, and I rarely feel lost. The book is rigorous but not, let's say, snobbish. I am learning a lot from it.
best suited for the best students.......2006-05-18
Many other reviewers have panned this book. The overall sentiment seems to be that the book is too difficult to follow. Perhaps for them. And, granted, perhaps this is so for many readers. But some students, who are probably majoring in maths or physics and who might be amongst the top in their classes, are likely to appreciate the book.
It is a rigorous explanation of classical analysis. Frankly, for someone who will not major in maths, you are unlikely to need this level of rigour in your understanding and usage of the maths. Even theoretical physicists. But you can regard it as a good part of your maths education. If you have learnt introductory calculus at the level of Apostol or Spivak's books, then that level of rigour is continued here.
The proofs can be quite difficult to follow. It is for good reason that Marsden segregates these into the ends of the chapters. The fact that these proofs are difficult is perhaps misread by some reviewers as a flaw in Marsden's writing. Wrong. Some proofs are inherently difficult, and need a detailed and careful presentation. The Heine-Borel Theorem, for example.
Which is why I find puzzling claims by some reviewers of many errors in the text. Are they referring to simple typos? Or errors in the logic? If the latter, maybe they should cite specific cases. I went through an earlier edition, as a student, and studied carefully most of the proofs. Beyond some typos, I never found any logic errors.
a poor job!.......2005-12-09
Unfortunately this book is used at many good schools, but it should not be! Given that there are many excellent texts it is hard to understand why this book is chosen so often. The author is very brief with his proofs as though the reader is reviewing the material and not learning it for the first time. On the other hand, he explains some simple topics excessively when it's not at all necessary. I think the reason for the style of this book is that Marsden is really an applied mathematican. I would not use this book for self-study, unless I had to. There are also many errors in the book. It is possible to make use of the book by supplementing it with other books (almost any book on analysis would do!). In short, Marsden does a beautiful job of turning analysis into an ugly subject! Be warned!!

Ace Your Stats Class.......2007-01-21
This is a must have text for anyone trying to learn stats. I am currently in a stats class. The text assigned was mostly theoretical with very little real world explanations and examples. I panicked! I started looking for supplementary material so that I could understand this topic. I was swayed by the reviews of this book. Please take a minute and review them for the fifth edition. The reviews rave about the book. So I bought it, despite the cost. I am so thankful that I did. I am beginning to understand statistics and even enjoy it. I'm finding myself looking forward to my study times so I can learn more. I give all the credit to this book. The author uses real world examples that I can relate to, has lots of examples and reasons why you would use one statistic over another. The other thing I like is that there are lots of exercises for practice that include the answers in the back. I say BUY IT! You won't regret it, I promise.
Stats book.......2006-11-10
The service is great, and it came in just a few days. The book was cheaper at amazon.com then it is at school. It has a tutorial that is very helpful as well.
