Ever wonder what a tardigrade might have looked like? Or what tree wetas eat? Now you can find out, because this great nature encyclopedia answers these questions and a jillion more. Organized into sections ("The Natural World," "How Living Things Work," "Ecology," "Classification," "Plants," and "Animals"), the Nature Encyclopedia is a perfect reference for anyone curious about organisms, ecosystems, and the scientists who study them. It's full of amazing color photos and easy-to-understand illustrations and diagrams so you can feel confident when you say, "Look, there's a Periplaneta americana, otherwise known as an American cockroach! Say, did you know they evolved long before humans?" We love this encyclopedia, and its companion book, The DK Science Encyclopedia, which covers the nonliving world with excellent information on space, rocks, electricity, and more. (Ages 9 to 12) --Therese Littleton

5 out of 5 stars For the nature-challenged.......2007-09-06

This is a great book -- I tend to love the DK books anyway, but this is definitely one to have on your shelf. For all of us nature-challenged moms, this is a great one for helping the kids (whether you homeschool them or not!) understand God's creation! We love this one ... just wish it was spiral bound

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book on nature for all ages.......2005-03-14

Primarily bought as a gift for my 5 yr old nephew, I spent a considerable amount of time pouring over this book. A neat thing about this book is the wealth of information coupled with attractive, colorful pictures opening up the world of nature.

5 out of 5 stars Rekindling Our Respect for Nature!.......2002-03-16

This book has succeeded in describing the great diversity of life on earth in such an interesting way with colorful photographs and new information that one can't help but stand in awe of our great planet. The chapters discuss : How living things work, ecology, classification, plants and animals. I was afraid that the animal section in this book would be a repetition of DK's Animal Encyclopedia, but thankfully it wasn't, I found new information everytime. For those who are not familiar with DK's encyclopedias one should know that the superior photography and layout of these books really captivate children's attention and fascination with this world.

5 out of 5 stars love of nature grows the more we know.......2002-01-02

I am delighted with this encyclopedia which I ordered as a present for my six year old. This handsome book has beautiful pictures and lots of information covering many aspects of nature. Attractive and accessible, it provides great rewards for the young reader whose love and respect of nature will grow as their knowledge expands. I expect it to be used in greater depth as my daughter grows older. For now, she loves to open it up and see what she finds - and becomes engaged immediately. I highly recommend it.

The final frontier is conquered in the DK Space Encyclopedia and Eyewitness Encyclopedia of Space CD-ROM, the most beautiful, best organized family information sources yet for our galaxy and beyond. In the section called "Observing the Universe," space buffs will discover detailed diagrams of various telescopes, along with explanations of how they're used to pick up light, radio waves, and other emissions from faraway objects. In "Exploring Space," you'll find out how rockets work to launch satellites, people, and gear into space. If you're curious about what it's like to live in space, check out the information on astronauts' daily routines--did you know one astronaut smuggled a ham sandwich into his capsule after hearing how bad NASA's food was?

"Planets and Moons" introduces all the worlds of our solar system, from Mercury out to Neptune and Pluto. Fantastic photos of the planets taken by fly-by probes and the Hubble space telescope show unbelievable details like mountains, craters, and giant canyons. Moving farther away from home, "The Stars" takes you on a tour of our own sun and our stellar neighbors. The life cycle of a star is shown, as well as such strange things as novas, binary stars, rotating variables, and black holes. "Galaxies and Beyond" introduces basic cosmology, the study of the universe, with sections on the Milky Way and other galaxies as well as the latest theories about the size and age of the universe. Finally, readers get tips on how to observe astronomical objects and events, a time line of discoveries, and short biographies of major figures in the field. The DK Space Encyclopedia and Eyewitness Encyclopedia of Space CD-ROM are packed with amazing pictures, diagrams, and facts that no space fan should miss. (Ages 9 and older) --Therese Littleton

Book Description

The essential reference guide to space science and astronomy.

From the latest dramatic images transmitted by the Hubble Telescope to the possibility of fossil life from Mars, space stories are hitting the headlines as never before. as we begin the third millennium, more and more people are looking outside out world for a truly cosmic vision of the future. the DK Space Encyclopedia celebrates our newfound status as citizens of the universe, rather than mere inhabitants of planet Earth. Comprehensive and thoroughly up to date, the DK Space Encyclopedia is the definitive guide to the cosmos. The defining achievements of the 20th century has been the exploration of space. On a practical level, access to space has transformed the way we live. communications, weather forecasting, mineral prospecting, and even warfare are all now controlled from Earth orbit. and out more distant forays into space have yielded astonishing rewards. Like Renaissance navigators who sailed uncharted oceans, our probes have been discovering "new worlds" -- in this case, not strange continents but our neighboring planets. Just a few decades ago, these planets were fuzzy disks even the world's biggest telescopes. Now they are future destinations for humankind, with mountains, valleys, canyons, volcanoes, atmospheres, and possible even primitive life-forms. Unlike brain surgery, astronomy is one of the few sciences in which the amateur can play an active -- even important -- role. The DK Space Encyclopedia includes a detailed section on practical astronomy, with clear star maps, advice on what to observe, and even instructions for making a simple telescope. Equipment used by today's amateurs -- including computers and charge-coupled devices that amplify light -- is more sophisticated than that available to professionals just a generation ago. As a result, backyard stargazers are able to complement the work done by top scientists at the world's greatest observatories and by the Hubble Space Telescope. The DK Space Encyclopedia shows that anyone can become an astronomer: The sky's the limit.

excellent book ., a good one for all kids interested about Space ...

5 out of 5 stars A valuable reference for anyone interested in space.......2003-06-22

This is a wonderful book, exploring nearly every aspect of space, from the Big Bang to black holes. The book is easy to understand and fun to read whether you're doing a project about space or if you just enjoy reading about it. It's chock-full of hundreds of beautiful photographs and realistic-looking pictures, too. The book is accurate, colorful, and up-to-date, and I enjoy looking through it and reading it in my spare time.

This book covers many, many topics in space. Some of them include the solar system, the planets, the sun, meteors, comets, asteroids, the Milky Way, how the universe started and what it will be like in the future, galaxies, stars, the Big Bang, other solar systems, black holes, and much more.

Plus, the book has an entire stargazing section, with directions to make your own simple telescope, star maps, observing the sky, binocular astronomy, and a lot more!

Overall, I highly recommend this book. Adults will enjoy reading it and they will learn a lot too, and young children will enjoy looking at the photographs and having adults explain to them the text. This is a valuable and complete reference, and nearly everyone will enjoy reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2002-04-22

This is not just an ordinary book about the solar system, it is rich with information about all aspects of space from observing the universe, exploring space, the solar system, stars, galaxies and practical stargazing. Like other DK encyclopedias this is a great piece of work. Though kids (ages 8-12) might find the text a bit difficult to understand, the pictures and the way the information is presented can still awaken their interest and capture their full attention.

5 out of 5 stars A classic book - Must have if you have inquisitive kids........2001-09-11

I cannot count the number of times I have spent an entire
evening with my 5 yr old being asked to explain this or that
catchy page with its wonderful graphics and amazing photos, only
to lose myself in its lucid explanations.

I wouldn't say the CD is spectacular, but my 5 yr old seems to
think it is better than any computer game he's played. He loves
the book and the CD so much that he just can't resist the
temptation to keep telling his cousins and friends about the
wonders of space, gravity, galaxies, supermassive black-holes
and quasars! It is a while now that I've read a story book to
him at night. This book is his staple.

...P>Bottom line -- I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great space CD-ROM and Book.......2000-09-03

This encyclopedia can make anyone feel like a scientist! Not only does it have fascinating facts on everything from atoms to zephyrs, it also shows how scientists work--describing, measuring, and asking questions about the world. Filled with detailed, sharp illustrations and eye-catching photographs, this book could keep a curious kid (or adult!) occupied for weeks. The one- and two-page entries are thematically organized--much more useful than alphabetical entries for making connections and thinking about whole systems. Some of the best categories are "Reactions," "Materials," "Weather," "Space," and "How Living Things Work." But every entry has accurate, well-written text cross-indexed to related pages and to the "Fact Finder" section in the back, with charts, tables, and maps to use with each section. A glossary and index round out this thorough package. You may grow so attached to this fantastic encyclopedia that you never want to leave it behind.... For portability, we recommend the pocket version, which weighs less, but is jam-packed with great science. And for budding biologists who can't get enough of the "Living Things" section in the Science Encyclopedia, the The DK Nature Encyclopedia is sure to please. (Ages 9 to 12) --Therese Littleton

5 out of 5 stars DK Science Encyclopedia.......2007-09-17

If you have an inquisitive child and you are a little rusty on science facts and figures, this is the book for BOTH of you!! Fun and interesting to read. A great reference book as well. A little on the pricey side, but packs a lot of information in one place. Great illustrations. Nice layout.

5 out of 5 stars DK Science Encyclopedia.......2005-09-09

This book is great. It gives many pictures and illustrations. It helped me immensely with my science class.

4 out of 5 stars The Fragility of Science.......2005-01-01

DK makes some of the world's best books for kids; that is indisputable. It's easy to nitpick, of course. The precision photography of the DK books, and the very attention to detail can render the technology information obsolete fairly rapidly. But for the here and now, DK books have no rival. However, they may well not last beyond the now. Here's my pet peeve with this particular book: It is so big and heavy, that if your kids love this book as much as mine do, the cover will quickly separate from the book, leaving the whole thing vulnerable to unravelling. We've lost our contents and index already, now we're losing our science history pages! I'm so sad about this! This book literally falls apart under its own weight, when handled by children. I will attempt a hold-together fix with some duct tape, but I'm not sure how long that will last. This book is such an incredible resource, and kids will spend hours reading it to themselves or dragging it over to you for an explanation of this or that, but its construction is not sufficiently strong for its weight and target age level. A tough paperback binding would have been a far better thing. Kids need strong, strong books. If you want to keep this book in spiffy condition, then by all means put it up on a shelf, defeat the purpose of buying it in the first place, and then your kids can sell it on e-bay in 50 years or so as an antique curiosity. If you're some hyper-organized size-5 perfect freak of nature, you can keep it on your special shelf of fragile books that you personally take down and read to your children for 25 minutes every day after Yoga, and then you can do the same for your grandchildren, if your kids ever let you see them. If you let this book just get enjoyed and learned from freely, you can expect that a: Your kids will love it and learn a lot, and b: The book won't last two years, unless you only have girls, who tend to be less destructive little beasts. I don't think girls will attempt to place this book as a bridge between couch and coffee table, then jump on it. Boys might. Punks.

5 out of 5 stars Every Home Should Have This Book.......2004-08-01

and I truly mean this. For adults, adolesents and kids as young as two years old, this is a great resource and highly enjoyable book for all ages. My 3 year old LOVES it, my 5 year old LOVES it, and when flipping through it with them together as a bedtime book, I almost always wind up reading and adding to my own knowledge-base myself. This is a book that you would expect to retail for $50 and at this Amazon price, it is a real deal.

5 out of 5 stars Great Intoduction to Science for Children.......2004-07-26

This is a book well suited to give a overview of a wide range of scientific topics. It may not be the end all as a scientific reference, but will spark your child's interest and imagination about science. After reading this book, your child will want to go on to more detailed books about their specific areas of interest.
The book is organized into chapters of broad topics such as Matter, Reactions, Materials, Electricity, Sound and Light, Weather, Space, Living things, etc. The breadth of subjects is a welcome change. The school curriculum of elementary children tends to be patchy, and this book fills in many gaps that they may not even touch on in Science Class.
Each page is filled with colorful and attention grabbing illustrations. There is a short synopsis of the subtopic and then the page is filled with factoids which match the attention span of children this age.
My son enjoyed this book immensely and it was his favorite for two years. It was a great nightime "story" book.

My three year old twins love this book!

Highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2006-11-29

I ordered this item to give as a gift, taking a chance that it would be as good as was reviewed here. I was DELIGHTED! This is a wonderful book for ANY child ages 4 to 12, I'd guess. Actually, I'm 34 and found it fascinating. The text is interesting, font not too small, not too technical or wordy. The mix of photos and models is just right. They have lots of interesting facts throughout, also. Did you know your hair can grow for up to 7 years before falling out? The writer puts amounts in ways a child can understand. For instance, the amount of blood in a baby verses a 10 year old, verses an adult is shown in bottles of red liquid next to a photo of that age person. Stunning photos of developing fetuses, pictures of white blood cells "eating" germs, and much more make this a terrific buy! We need to order ourselves a copy now. I let my kids look at it with me before we mail it to their cousin. We spent a half hour entranced before I realized we better mail it, or it would look like a used book! Buy it. You may want to get two copies!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wealth of Info.......2006-06-03

This is the only kids encyclopedia I own and we love it. I got it as a unit study for the summer for my 6.5 yo dd who is going into 2nd grade. It is perfect for her. She asks so many questions they days and this really gets and keeps her interested for hours!!! It has lots of wonderful pictures and diagrams and even a few ideas to try as well! IMHO it is a great buy!

5 out of 5 stars The Book that made my Daughter want to become a Doctor........2006-05-12

My 3+ year old daughter and I checked this out of the library. As soon as we did we had to look and read it numberous times during the day and before bed. She is down right passionate about it.

When I had to return it to the library she cried very hard so I bought her a copy for Valentine's day.

Since seeing and reading this wonderful book my daughter is determined to become a doctor. She wants to read as many body books as she possibily can so that's what I have been buying her. I've learned much about the body myself.

I think these DK books are wonderful for kids with all the photographs plus text. They are books that provide information in such a way that as they grow through the years they can learn more and more from the same book.

5 out of 5 stars Very, very good!.......2006-04-25

This book is wonderful. I looked at a TON of human body books for my first grader. It seemed nearly impossible to find one for the 5-8 year old crowd that was factually thorough and had real photographs, but that wasn't too in-depth or too advanced in vocabulary. So many books for this age group are just plain simplistic and cartoony and don't do justice to the amazing machines our bodies are!

Since my dd is highly visual, the pictures are important to us and this book slam-dunks in that category (as usual for DK). Every major body system is covered, as well as a few things you might not think to teach a Kinder to 3rd grader, like allergies and non-verbal communication. My dd LOVED the section on the circulatory system and the real-life photos of the components of blood held her interest in a major way.

I highly recommend this for a classical homeschooling family (for first grade) or just for any parent with kids who want to know how their bodies work.

5 out of 5 stars Good, solid kids encyclopedia.......2006-02-27

This encyclopedia is a good introduction into the animal kingdom. It does read well and the illustrations and imagery are well done. The categories make looking up animal groups a breeze. There is enough detail and close ups on the smaller animals, which really helps with understanding the animals.
Even the rediculous representation of the T-Rex found in the Big Dinosaur Book by DK makes a cameo, which we found amusing.

Overall a worthy purchase, promising long use.

5 out of 5 stars My son's favorite present!!.......2005-12-15

I bought this encyclopedia for my son's 7th birthday. It was his favorite gift, hands down. He still takes it with him everywhere. The book is full of pictures and lots of neat facts that are enough to challenge a 7 year old, but concise enough that he can read them simply. The book is split up into different categories of animals: Mammals, Creepy Crawlies, Birds, Reptiles, etc. Then each category has pages for different types of that creature. For example, mammals has ocean mammals, horses, marsupials, flying mammals, etc. The pictures are wonderful, and as I said, the amount of text is just right. I am so glad I bought this. My son is happy to sit for hours on end looking at this book. I highly recommend it for any animal loving child.

5 out of 5 stars 3rd Grade Teacher.......2005-02-20

I bought this Science Encyclopedia along with their basic Encyclopedia and I truly love it. My kids are always reading it whenever they get the chance. I have a 5 minute session after lunch before my class leaves to go to "specials." During that 5 minute teaching period I have been letting them pick out one subject area from one of the encyclopedias and then we review how to read nonfiction while looking over that subject briefly. I am amazed to see the sparks that start flying and how interested in all of the subjects the students have been. The pictures are wonderful and help students to connect with the information they are reading. I will buy more sets for my classroom because they are always in use!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Absaloutly Amazing.......2004-12-21

I love this book almost as much as the original E.Encyclopedia.
It's highly educational, in my opinon. Parents and Kids will love it. I could spend hours reading this, and you may too.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Research Tool for Science Research .......2004-10-13

This is the second joint project after the reference book e.encyclopedia was published in October 2003. Both books feature websites enhanced by Google. Keywords in this book direct children to exclusive DK/Google websites where they connect to pre-selected relevant and authoritative websites.

The DK/Google e.encyclopedia science website is free and children can access information once they have this book. Once they get to the sites they can watch videos, listen to sounds through sound buttons, take virtual tours, read real-time reports, access databases and take interactive quizzes.

There are 8 core sections to explain and explore over 220 science topics.

Matter and Materials
Forces and Energy
Electricity and Magnetism
Space
Earth
Plants
Animals
Human Body

This has to be one of the most beautiful books DK has ever created. The colors are vibrant and the section on Space is bursting with spiral galaxies and pictures of space exploration. If you are interested in Volcanoes, you can turn to the Earth section. You can read about the eruption on Mount St. Helens and see pictures before and after volcanic eruptions.

In the Health Section, children can learn about exercise, hygiene and diet. I found the information on the futuristic nanorobots in the bloodstream fascinating.

Every section has a bold heading and interesting definition. Then, there are pages and pages of full-color pictures that can keep your attention for hours at a time. I wish we had owned a book like this when I was a child because it would have given me an information base to build on in future years. Although I must say, I think adults will find this equally fascinating. Children are always asking questions and now you can find all the answers, complete with pictures.

Fascinating Pictures:

Mangrove Roots growing upwards in coastal swamps
Tigers
Monarch Butterflies
Cross-section of a Tide Pool
High-Tech Imaging
Eye of the Storm - Hurricanes
Limestone Caves

This book also answers the following questions:

Why can an opera singer shatter glass with a single note?
How do sea organisms make their own light?
How can we reduce pollution by using Renewable Energy?
What is the lightest substance on earth and why can it float on air?

I can highly recommend this beyond amazing book to parents, teachers and librarians. E-encyclopedia is a learning resource that is not limited to just the book. While the book provides a solid grounding and interesting facts, it is actually a springboard to the Internet Universe.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book, with one reservation.......2007-08-12

I bought the book for my wife to increase her knowledge of science. It's somewhat directed at adolescents, but it's immensely useful for anyone who only learned science through many of our public schools. The explanations are concise, clear, and often go into the history of science, which I believe is essential. It hits all areas of science and shows how they tie into one another. My only complaint in what I've seen is the treatment of global warming. The authors present this as scientific fact that the earth is warming according to computer models and will increase greatly in the coming years. They fail to mention that the models are full of flaws and have had an unacceptably low predictive validity, and they also do not mention that a very large number of climatologists completely or largely reject the hypothesis. As a science book, they should stick to science, and the hypothesis of man-made global warming is more about the corruption of the scientific process with money than it is true science.

    3 out of 5 stars Emphasizing SMALL.......2007-08-15

I'm familiar with the hardcover version of this book and have always loved DK's emphasis of impressive graphics combined with useful text. This book is no different.

However, I neglected to notice how small this book was. It's still pretty thick (1-5/8 inches) but the height/width has been shrunk (6-3/4 x 5-3/8 inches). If you're used to the hardcover, it may surprise you that this is more a really thick "pocket book" and not anything like the "reference book" nature of the hardcover edition.

For some that's a plus. For me it was a huge negative. Content is 5-star ... but I'm looking for something more durable and regular book size. I'm sending this one back and will try to find one of the old hardcovers instead.

5 out of 5 stars This is a very handy encyclopedia !!!.......2006-06-09

The is a small but a thick book. ABSOLUTELY beautiful illustration printed on very nice paper with easy-to-understand words. Full of fun facts. Some types are intentionally bigger than the others so even an impatient person like myself will not give up the book so easily. Because of this book I started to realize how NICE DK Publishing's books' quality are and start looking for more of their encyclopedia ~ ! I can always find out the contents easily from the index pages at the end of the little book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for all age.......2003-04-26

I wish I had this book when I was student. I am glad I found this one for my curious son. Visuals are excellent with great explainations.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-04-24

This is an excellent book. I wish I had this book when I was student. You MUST have this if you care about learning yourself or want to teach your kids (that's why I bought it) about science.

5 out of 5 stars Compact and very useful!.......2001-10-30

The other day I was watching a show about the ocean and saw the most amazing thing. They were talking about "black smokers - strange chimneys that form on the ocean floor." Later, in a discussion with a friend, I needed some extra information and this book provided me with the specifics.

When it comes to looking up this type of information, search engines are useful to a point. However, I find having a book gives me more confidence that the information is really accurate and true. Although, I do have a real problem with evolution in these types of books. Apart from that, the information is wonderful.

There are very colorful pictures. The Maple leaves turning from green to orange is shown with an explanation as to why this occurs. There are so many pictures in this book and the type is very easy to see.

If you have children and they need a book to look up facts for their school projects, this is a nice, compact size children will feel comfortable using.

The only question you will have when this book arrives is: "What do I look up first?"
