4 out of 5 stars Well-written Explanation of Operation Barbarossa.......2007-10-10

This book presents a fairly balanced review of the opening stages of Operation Barbarossa.

Through the use of letters from German soldiers to their loved ones back home it does so in a manner that allows the reader to obtain a good grasp of how these soldiers felt, fought, and had to live under arduous conditions, both in good (i.e., hot) and bad (i.e., cold) weather. Just reading the accounts of the long marches the Landser had to undertake (often 30km per day, day after day) to keep up with the German advance was exhausting.

The author also does a good job of explaining the logistical difficulties the Germans faced in stretching their front past the limits that the rear could reasonably supply it.

In addition, the author points out that the massive attrition rate of NCOs and other officers as the battle progressed, which losses were harder to replace than those of general infantry since the NCOs and officers received longer and more extensive training than the average soldier.

Well worth reading to any student of this period of history.

5 out of 5 stars Written like a first person account.......2005-09-18

Kershaw has a masterpiece here, and this book will explain in graphic detail the difficulty faced by the Landser in a 6 month period, from the start of the invasion until the end of December of 1941 and early 1942. Much of the book highlighting the words of the soldiers themselves, who had a clarity of thought in describing the horrendous and excruciating pace in few words of the bitter fighting against a foe who often proved to be suicidally brave, inflicting casualties to a German army unprepared for the level of intensity they faced in this alien foe, in this alien land, one that went on and on forever into featureless steppe, and when slogging over the top of a hill one could look out and see many more ahead, with little else surrounding the never ending march. Tired and exhausted from continual movemment to support the Panzers as they encircled yet another number of Red Army Divisions, and without the infantry the pockets could not be collapsed. The trapped Soviets inside the circle would often charge forward in mass attacks in attempts to break out of this pocket, and their bodies piled up all around German machine gunners. Some would fight it out to the end and the result were companies depleted of both seasoned officers and NCO's from the brutal amount of resulting carnage.

Some accounts tell of Soviets fighting a desperate attack to break out of these pockets and being on the verge of breaking through thin German ranks only to suddenly stop and sit down, obeying an order given from a safer distance inside the pocket by a superior officer to instead surrender. The Germans simply had no idea they would be facing this kind of enemy, one they could not make sense of and was very hard to defeat, fighting on in hopeless situations. Soviet armor is much discussed, and had the Red Army tank crews had the German Panzer crews training and tactics they likely could have inflicted staggering losses. As it were the training of Panzer crews would usually defeat the technical superiority of their T-34 tanks.

The severity that followed the German advance (looted and burned villages) would lead to an escalation of violence by both partisans and the Red Army. Many German POW's were later found dead with genital mutilations and eye gougings. This predictably lead to a further increase of atrocities from the Wehrmacht or SS in response, and the Soviet fate was no better. Only 3 of every 100 Red Army prisoners would survive themselves, most of them starved to death.

The post that the author refers to also contains Soviet letters and diaries, much of it retrieved from the dead bodies of the Soviets and somehow this information has been preserved for posterity. The power of the speech of these soldiers, both German and Soviet, says volumes in only two or three sentences. They convey a hell that will show the reader that in the first week of December this was clearly a soon to be defeated German army. Their supply chain was served mainly by only two rail lines and non-stop Luftwaffe flights. Soon they would lose their air superiority, despite enormous early losses of Soviet aircraft in the opening months as surprise allowed thousands to be shot on the ground.

Motor convoys had to deal with seas of mud and later arctic tempatures, and horse drawn transport that saw entire companies of horses die from overwork, exhaustion and exposure. All of these reasons, to include an enemy that knew the countryside and was prepared for it, further weakened the German supply chain. Much of the Germans winter clothing was stolen from Soviet homes and POW's. Newsreels and newspaper accounts of nothing but "glorious victory" were soon looked at with skepticism from a German nation that responded to appeals from Goebbels himself for warm winter clothing, and the post from the soldiers to their families, it is their words, letters, diaries and conversations of these soldiers themselves that give the power of imagination to this book, as it is their words that describe it so well, and Kershaw uses this post quite often throughout the entire book. It is a look at war through the eyes of the Landser, often in their words, junior officers and enlisted mainly.

Army Group Centre, who's advance is usually examined, contains both the discussions of Guderian and other generals who clearly are aware of what the OKW in Berlin has no concept of: The Divisions are now mere skeletons of what they once were.

Superb book, highly recommeded.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent ground-level view of the Russian Front WW2.......2004-04-24

Just finished reading this book. It is in the class of "in deadly combat", "panzer aces", "ostfront 1944" and "forgotten soldier" as THE best sources for the scale and intensity of this war. Highly recommended, especially for the moving diary entries from both sides of the battle.

1 out of 5 stars Written like he was being chased by a T-34.......2003-08-12

One of the worst pieces of writing I've seen since gradeschool. Kershaw repeats phrases and quotes repeatedly. Often, he'll quote some soldier's account, then, later, use the same quote as a sub-chapter title, and still later, have the quote again as a caption to a photograph. And don't get me started on the photographs! He says most of the photos are from his own collection. Well, he should have kept his collection to himself. These are some of the worst taken pictures I've seen, so grainy that they must have been blow-ups from microscopic negatives. The only useful data was the statistical information he provides on combat unit attrition. Now, I'm off to find the source of his statistical information - that would be worth reading!

5 out of 5 stars The Eastern Front in all it's utter brutality..........2003-06-05

While there are many excellent works on the Eastern front most tend to be fairly dry, the exception being some of the better first-person accounts, and those often lack strategic overview. Kershaw's book fills the need in this area quite well, at least regarding the first year of that titanic struggle. Weaving diaries, after-action reports and interviews he paints a grim picture of a year-long, unending hell for those involved.

Many books on this subject tend to make the summer of 1941 appear to be a cake-walk for the Germans. While I don't consider myself an expert, I'd always felt that '41 had to have been at least the EASIEST year for them. After reading Kershaw's book it is obvious that the Soviets provided no easy years. Although many authors have given convenient excuses for Hitler's failure to gain victory in '41, ie: the appearence of T-34/KV1 tanks, onset of winter, Hitler's bad decisions, etc. Kershaw's book makes it obvious that another factor must be considered, that is the tenacity and determination of the Soviet army.

One of the stories in the book is about a group of Russian wounded in no-mans-land, German medics attempt to provide aid, and the wounded fire at them, throw grenades and resist in any way possible. Although this behavior appears almost beyond comprehension, one must bear in mind that they were resisting an invader who to them had attacked without provocation.

As others have pointed out, much of Kershaw's accounts come from the German side, the reason for that is this IS a book about the German side of that war. That said, he provides a good amount of info and accounts from the Soviet side as well, making the book, I felt very balanced. I feel the book is a great, fast-paced read that actually puts a "face" on the brutality and horror of the first year of the greatest conflict this world has seen.

        Book Description

May '68 in France expressed a fundamental version of freedom: not freedom to succeed, but freedom to revolt. Political revolutions ultimately betray revolt because they cease to question themselves. Revolt, as I understand it -- psychic revolt, analytic revolt, artistic revolt -- refers to a permanent state of questioning, of transformations, an endless probing of appearances.

In this book, Julia Kristeva extends the definition of revolt beyond politics per se. Kristeva sees revolt as a state of permanent questioning and transformation, of change that characterizes psychic life and, in the best cases, art. For her, revolt is not simply about rejection and destruction -- it is a necessary process of renewal and regeneration.

          Book Description

Agrarian Revolt in a Mexican Village deals with a Taráscan Indian village in southwestern Mexico which, between 1920 and 1926, played a precedent-setting role in agrarian reform. As he describes forty years in the history of this small pueblo, Paul Friedrich raises general questions about local politics and agrarian reform that are basic to our understanding of radical change in peasant societies around the world. Of particular interest is his detailed study of the colorful, violent, and psychologically complex leader, Primo Tapia, whose biography bears on the theoretical issues of the "political middleman" and the relation between individual motivation and socioeconomic change. Friedrich's evidence includes massive interviewing, personal letters, observations as an anthropological participant (e.g., in fiesta ritual), analysis of the politics and other village culture during 1955-56, comparison with other Taráscan villages, historical and prehistoric background materials, and research in legal and government agrarian archives.

Reviewed by PETER UNWIN in International Relations, Volume XIII, No3, December 1996 -

Forty years ago this autumn the world was convulsed by two acts of aggression: the Franco-British invasion of Egypt and the Soviet assault upon Hungary. Both aggressions have long since been vacated, that against Egypt almost immediately, that against Hungary seven years ago, in Europe's year of miracles. But historians have perhaps not yet fully explored the significance of either event; as Mao said of the French Revolution, it is perhaps too soon to tell.
Until recently, exploration of the Hungarian Revolution and its repression presented particular problems. In Hungary itself and in the Soviet Union, the two main protagonists of the tragedy, the subject was officially closed. Anniversaries were marked only by official, and entirely partial, statements and publications. Honest historical research of the Revolution was forbidden, and even discussion of what happened so long ago was politically dangerous. Official oblivion may not have prevented Hungarians and even Russians reflecting on what happened in 1956 but it stood in the way of any informed examination of the question and ruled out publication of objective research about it. It was left to people outside the Soviet world, and to Hungarian emigrés above all, to brood over the facts and theories about October-November 1956 and to weave them into memoirs and history.
Hungary's freedom in 1989 changed all that, and since that time Hungarian scholars have worked openly on what was without doubt the most significant series of events in Hungary's twentieth-century history. A group of historians at the Institute for the History of the 1956 Revolution in Budapest have now published some of their work in English in time for the anniversary. The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 is the result.
The book, a much modified and compressed version of a Hungarian original, provides a workmanlike account of the antecedents of the Revolution; of the dramatic and ultimately tragic events of late October and early November 1956; and of the retribution which followed when Soviet tanks had crushed Hungarian hopes. It skilfully explores the significance of the Revolution: at the time and over the decades since, in Hungary itself, in what was the Soviet empire, and in the wider world. For that dwindling band of readers of English who still care about what happened in Hungary in 1956, it provides a reliable and convenient guide.
But it also presents an interesting historiographical puzzle. `This study', the publishers claim, `is the first authentic history of the uprising which sent shock-waves through the Cold War world ... All previous accounts have been limited by incomplete or unreliable evidence. This important text takes full advantage of the wealth of newly available material following the disintegration of the Soviet Union. It includes domestic and foreign archival material, and also private papers and eyewitness reports by individuals who can at last put their experiences on record without fear.'
With some allowance for book-promotion hyperbole, all this is true. But it is fascinating to observe how little the book in fact adds to the material in English which became available within a decade of the extinction of the Revolution. Press reporting at the time, a United Nations Committee report immediately afterwards, a volume of essays written by Imre Nagy in 1955-56 and smuggled clandestinely to the West in 1957, a dozen books by Hungarian emigrés living in Western Europe and the United States, all these taken together gave us by the early 1960s almost as much information about the Hungarian Revolution as scholars working in freedom in Hungary have been able to piece together forty years later.
In 1963 I sat down to write a biography of Imre Nagy. I had lived in Hungary for the three years that immediately followed his execution and had breathed the air of that terrorized nation, logging rumours of arrests, trials and executions; but it was quite impossible for a diplomat in those years to find Hungarians who dared to talk about the Revolution. I had worked through the mendacious propaganda with which the Hungarian regime sought to put the best face on their repression, but there was nothing more objective, from Hungarian or Russian sources, to back it up. So I fell back on what I had smelt in the Budapest air, on the Nagy essays, the United Nations report, the emigrés' memoirs, and from all this I cobbled together a book. For a variety of reasons extraneous to Hungary it was not published at the time; and when my Voice in the Wilderness. Imre Nagy and the Hungarian Revolution finally appeared nearly thirty years later, in 1991, it was in a very different form. But apart from a number of post-1989 conversations with Hungarians who had been involved in the tragedy of autumn 1956, I still relied on those scrappy sources to which I had turned three decades earlier.
So I have had a very particular interest in comparing the information in Gyorgy Litvan's The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 with the facts and arguments I first discovered in those sources in the early 1960s. There are points on which he scores. He achieves a dispassion of which few of the emigrés were capable in the years immediately after the Revolution. He documents their allegations and speculations - but more often to confirm than to contradict them. He provides more precise documentation than the United Nations report could achieve on a number of incidents, and in particular on developments in Moscow and eastern European capitals at the time. He gives us accurate figures on losses in the fighting on both sides and on arrests and executions afterwards, figures which opinion in the West long afterwards still exaggerated. He is magisterially and unexcitingly right on the relationship between the Suez and Hungarian tragedies. His assessment of the true nature of the revolution and of its significance over the decades which followed breaks new ground. He and his collaborators have, in short, produced a worthy piece of work, but they leave the main outlines of our knowledge, and much of the detail, totally unaffected.
I record all this not to decry the work of historians but to suggest that we should not undervalue the impressions and facts assembled in the heat of the action by participants in great events and recorded by them, often in haste, soon afterwards. The western journalists suddenly dumped in the middle of chaos in the streets of Budapest in October 1956 mostly got things right. So did the freedom fighters who made their dangerous escapes from Hungary in November and December and sat down to record their memories soon afterwards. The young intellectuals awarded a grant and a desk in a western university while they went to work to make sense of their mysterious country for outsiders got things in pretty fair proportion. And the Committee which produced the United Nations report weighed up its witnesses and listened to their evidence and somehow made its way to conclusions which stand the test of time.
So The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 is a good book to have by one, comfortingly authoritative, dispassionate, removed from the cross-currents of the time. But it really tells us very little that we did not know in the late 1950s and the early 1960s about the Hungarian drama and tragedy of October-November 1956.

5 out of 5 stars The best book ever written about tornadoes.......2003-10-22

Interesting, enlightening and useful are only a few of the adjectives that describe this book. It has everything from exciting stories to amazing facts. While the book includes many incredible photographs, they are intended to educate rather than just inspire awe. Whether you are interested in storm chasing or just want to recognize and protect your family from dangerous weather formations, this is the book for you. It truly has truly something for just about everyone from the light browser to the seasoned chaser. This is a book that everyone in tornado-prone areas should have as a reference!

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginner storm chasers or Midwest residents........2001-09-06

Well, it's not quite everything, but if you live in the Midwest you should really consider getting this book, whether it be used or new. It offers many different images as far as storm structures, tornado structures and clouds.

Diagrams are offered for 1) viewing the inside of a "worst-first" thunderstorm, 2) viewing the inside of a "worst-last" thunderstorm, 3) inside a tornado, 4) two pages of drawings of different "breeds" of tornadoes, 5) damage paths with debris location, etc.

There are small side notes on almost every page including "weird" information, myths, quick reference, highlights and checklists.

As for beginning chasers or settled chasers with bad luck (such as I), this is a great book to get started with. Aside from Arjen and Jerrine talking about one specific storm that spawned two tornadoes, you'll also learn about "The Storm Environment" (p.68). The Storm Environment explains the different types of clouds that are present with storms and what to expect with them. This section lasts two pages. The "Weather Words" section will get you up to date on your vocabulary used throughout the book. Although there are no scientific words that you'll never understand written throughout the book at all, it does contain words like aloft, updraft, downdraft, inflow, outflow and core. If you're unfamiliar with these words (or you simply think you know what they mean) this could come in handy. A small section is given to weather offices, such as SKYWARN and CANWARN.

This book will also describe to you the difference between a tornado, twister, funnel, funnel cloud, wall cloud, etc. Some of them have no differences at all, even though they are thought to have different meanings.

So far, I have only gotten through the two chapters focusing on Severe Storms and Tornadoes. I'll be back to update the review after I've gotten through the entire book. Enjoy!

                        5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly written, diverse & well-illustrated tornado tome.......2001-07-04

Although the authors are Canadian, and aim the book at an audience north of the U.S., American weather enthusiasts and anyone wondering about tornadoes will soak this up. "Under the Whirlwind" is a solid work overall; and for a self-published book, it is amazingly informative and accurate. Readers may be as surprised at the Verkaiks' insight into severe storms issues, since they are not meteorologists. However, their devotion to learning scientific concepts, combined with their extensive storm observing experience and conversational writing style, allows them to succeed with this book. Although the reading is light in a purely technical sense, I found only a few typos and insignificant errors. More important are the clear messages of practicality, realism, education and compassion in the book -- which includes numerous suvivors' tales as well as segments on insurance coverage and helping children to deal with storm-related tragedy. The authors convey a wise message of safety and responsibility as well, for example: "After damaging tornadoes strike there are usually calls for better alert systems -- more bells and whistles.... But the best warning you can have comes from keeping your eye on the sky."

The illustrations are numerous and excellent, without peer in popular severe weather literature. Their deep artistic and educational appreciation for the wonders of a stormy sky pours forth in the form of dozens of full-color photos -- many consisting of spectacular storm structure scenes taken on their forays to the American Great Plains. These aren't presented just to show off the Verkaiks' mastery of storm photography, but to aid in interpreting cloud features. There are also several interesting, high-quality, contributed photos of Canadian tornadoes which never have been published before. The Verkaiks richly endow the volume with drawings, tables and color graphs as well, including numerous inset trivia boxes scattered throughout the book related to debunked tornado myths and tornado oddities.

Because this hasn't been a widely advertised book or peddled by a major publishing house since its 1997 debut, it may go under the radar, so to speak. But it is well worth the cost for students and general audiences curious about the mysteries of tornadoes.

5 out of 5 stars It was the best book I have ever read on the subject........1999-05-01

Under The Whirlwind is, one of the best books about tornadoes available. By reading the book, you will gain an amazing amount of knowledge, and be able to look at the sky with amazement and knowledge about what you see happening. It explains everything you ever wanted or need to know about severe weather and tornadoes, and it is written in understandable terms. Buy this book, and impress your friends with your knowledge of the stormy sky!

I am very pleased with this book. It gives great in-depth detail about what a victim goes through during a tornado, how to read the stormy sky, about the tornadoes in Ontario, and what to do after a tornado. I have personally met the authors.

                          Book Description

A humorous journey around Britain to uncover the history of the eccentrics, crackpots and visionaries who have tried to measure and predict the weather, meeting people obsessed with the weather today, and trying to define the effect of the weather on the national character.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughts on a Familiar Subject.......2006-03-03

There may be better subjects for conversation than the weather, but no more frequent one. It is always essential to quote Mark Twain on the subject, "Everyone talks about the weather, but no one does anything about it." This may, of course, no longer be true, since we seem to be changing our climate as time goes on. On the other side of the Atlantic, Dr. Johnson said, "When two Englishmen meet, their first talk is of the weather." Tom Fort, in his book that is about weather in general and British weather in particular, _Under the Weather: Us and the Elements_ (Century), includes this second famous quotation about the weather, but also includes what Johnson said afterwards: "They are in haste to tell each other what each must already know; that it is hot or cold, bright or cloudy, windy or calm." We do the same now, of course, but we can do more, since we can talk about predictions and what the weatherman has told us to expect. Everyone knows how faulty such predictions can be, and criticism of what the weatherman has told us is now part of the conversation. Fort has given a general history of how we came to be able to predict the weather, and to criticize the predictions, in a funny book that is full of eccentric characters historical and contemporary.

"Once, of course," writes Fort of his fellow Britons, "we counted the weather as being one of the favours bestowed on us by a God who regarded us with particular favour among the nations of the world." This idea continues to be prevalent among many, with God's hand being held responsible for the good weather allowing for, say, the Dunkirk evacuation. It was often the rectors of the church that kept records of the natural history of their parishes, and Fort finds the earliest meteorological writings in the daily record kept by William Merle, rector in Driby village between 1337 and 1344. Fort gives a sample of Merle's diary, and remarks, "The outstanding failing of the weather journal as a literary form - its dullness - is amply illustrated by this example." Records like this, however, are fondly cherished, even though lacking any objective measurement, they cannot add to the understanding of weather or weather changes. Weather watchers can now perform their hobby with extensive equipment and objective measures. Even if you have no interest in recording detailed weather observations, you do have an interest about knowing whether to take an umbrella or not. The saddest story in this book is Vice Admiral Robert FitzRoy, who is more famous as the captain of the _Beagle_ that took Darwin on his voyage. (FitzRoy was an ardent creationist whose own book about the voyage maintained that dinosaurs were extinct because they had been too big to get through the door of Noah's Ark.) As a sailor, he knew how vital weather predicting could be, and he worked earnestly to get an inchoate weather reporting and predicting system going. When it proved to be fallible, his work was lumped with that of the cranks and charlatans known as the astrometeorologists, and he was mocked by the newspapers and his peers. He was driven to suicide.

But there are plenty of happier tales here, like the perfectly named Dr. Merryweather who invented the Tempest Prognosticator. Dr. Merryweather (Fort admits he at first thought the name was a hoax, but it is genuine) invented a weather predicting device that in his own words "is worth all the barometers in the world." Doctor Merryweather had his insight when he realized that the documented restlessness of leeches at the approach of wind and rain could be harnessed for the betterment of mankind. His Prognosticator of 1851 housed not one, but twelve leeches (toward whom he was affectionate), each in its own little bottle, each attached to one of twelve hammers that would ring a bell when bad weather approached. The device worked just fine, according to Dr. Merryweather and his supporters, but it was ignored by governmental and academic authorities, and the doctor's enthusiasm waned. However, Fort tells us all is not lost: "Enthusiasts at the Barometer Museum in Devon have recreated a working version, complete with leeches, which they say is extremely reliable." It's just the sort of touch that recurs in an amusing book, full of surprising stories, about a subject of inexhaustible interest.

                          Book Description

An entertaining and fact-filled look at the links between health and climate, this book details both short-term symptoms and life-threatening conditions that can be aggravated by the weather. It explains how to be protected from the extremes of weather as well as how to ease weather-related symptoms. Startling weather-related observations include evidence that the onset of labor is more common when barometric pressure is falling; migraines can be made much worse by cold and winds; deaths from heart disease are more common on days when there are blustery winds bringing changeable temperatures; changes in humidity can cause scar tissue to ache; and patients with noninherited forms of schizophrenia are twice as likely to have been born in extreme weather conditions as those with the inherited form of the disease.

Although I'll stop short of saying this is a scientific book, I will say that it is thought provoking. Protected from the weather by air-conditioning and other modern conveniences, have we tuned out to the impacts that come with living on Planet Earth? According to Ms Thomas, 35% of the world's population is 'weather sensitive' leading to mood disorders, forgetfulness, headache, and a host of others problems. Filled with interesting facts and a long list of references, this well-written book is worth a read for those interested in branching past traditional medicine and into the realm of alternative health.

I enjoy this book every time I read it with my 2 and a half year old twins. The paper cut-out illustrations are gorgeous and the story about a woman in the sky who makes weather change as she cleans her "house," while a boy named Kenny down on earth enjoys the fruits of her labors (without realizing who his benefactor is) is a sweet and clever introduction to nature.
