Book Description
Volume 5 of an exquisite series of collector-quality photo books by RZM Publishing. Embracing an aesthetic seen only in high-end art photography books, RZM presents over 28 rolls of newly discovered combat film shot by six Waffen-SS Kriegsberichters (War Correspondents) during the renowned East Front battle of Kursk, July 1943. In addition to being an invaluable visual reference for all students of military history, this poignant six volume series focuses on the pure human experience of the front-line infantryman, a subject too often eclipsed by the grandeur of the political and military landscape of the Second World War.
Printed on deluxe European semi-matte art paper for unparalleled photographic reproduction, each page literally "pulls" you into the images, making you feel as though you are a part of the action. This documentary style series presents the photographs in the actual sequence in which they were taken, creating a visual diary unlike anything previously published on the subject. Volume 5 contains extraordinary images of the men and armored vehicles of the 1st SS-Panzer-Grenadier-Division "Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler" and the 3rd SS-Panzer-Grenadier-Division "Totenkopf," in action and at rest.
Customer Reviews:
Good Series.......2007-02-14
I purchased all 6 books in the series, at the time of writing this I had received Vol 4 and 5, the photos are all in black and white none of which I had seen before quality is good with a basic caption under each photo and a more detail information regarding the photo and what stage of the battle is at the rear.

Book Description
No soldier went off to the Civil War with quicker step than 17-year-old James Patrick Sullivan. A hired man on a farm in Juneau County, Wisconsin, he was among the first to anwer Lincoln's call for volunteers in 1861. Sullivan fought in a score of major battles, was wounded five times, and was the only soldier of his regiment to enlist on three separate occasions. An Irishman in the Iron Brigade is a collection of Sullivan's writings about his hard days in President Lincoln's Army. Using war diaries and letters, the Irish immigrant composed nearly a dozen revealing accounts about the battles of his brigage-Brawner Farm, Second Bull Run, South Mountain, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg as well as the fighting of 1864. Using his old camp name, "Mickey of Company K," Sullivan wrote not so much for family or for history, but to entertain his comrades of the old Iron Brigade. His stories-overlooked and forgotten for more than a century- are delightful accounts of rough-hewn "Western" soldiers in the Eastern Army of the Potomac. His Gettysburg account, for example, is one of the best recollections of that epic battle by a soldier in the ranks. He also left a from-the-ranks view of some of the Union's major soldiers such as George McClellan, Irvin McDowell, John Pope, and Ambrose Burnside. An Irishman in the Iron Brigade is in part the story of the great veterans' movement which shaped the nation's politics before the turn-of-the-century. Troubled by economic hardship, advancing age, and old war injuries, Sullivan turned to old comrades, his memories, and writing, to put the great experiences of his life in perspective.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful resource.......2003-12-10
I must say I was thrilled to come across this book here. James Patrick Sullivan was my great-great grandfather and I knew little about my ancestors before. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a glimpse of a soldier's recollections of the War Between the States.
JP.......2003-10-23
This is a thoroughly enjoyable book for me, as I am the great-granddaughter of Mickey Sullivan, or "JP" as we Sullivans call him. I read this book before visiting Gettysburg and so was able to retrace his steps. Gettysburg has an surreal quality about it and still seems alive with the spirits of those who fought there. JP was fortunate to come home from that war. Books such as these that speak with the actual words of the soldiers help you to understand the times and the feelings of those who fought there.
Lance Herdegen brought my great-grandfather to life for me - an opportunity I would never have experienced if this book had not been written. I have also listened to Mr. Herdegen speak, telling stories about the Civil War, about the "Western" soldiers from Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin Native Americans, who enlisted as "French-Canadians" since as native americans they were considered at that time to be "foreign" peoples...how incredible that seems to us now.
The Civil War will long hold interest and mystery. I think you will enjoy this book, as well as the others written by Lance Herdegen. He is a great authority on the Civil War

Book Description
We know theirs to have been the hands that helped build the nation’s canals and railroads, the transport for so many immigrant groups making their way to the newly formed state of Wisconsin in the mid–nineteenth century. Yet the stories of Irish people in Wisconsin and their role in our state’s history became almost invisible as time passed. The Irish in Wisconsin recounts the nature of the Irish immigrant experience in Wisconsin both in relation to other ethnic groups and to the larger story of Irish immigration into this country. David Holmes shows the impact of the Irish on the state’s early development and politics. He explores the Irish cultural contribution to the state and the current resurgence in Irish pride and identity. The Irish in Wisconsin tells this story with solid historical analysis, first-hand accounts, and rare photographs.

Book Description
Milwaukeeís Irish can claim a long and distinguished heritage throughout the cityís history. The fact that Irish immigrants could speak English gave them an advantage and enabled them to become community leaders and gain economic independence. Irishman Thomas Gilbert was village president in 1844, two years before Milwaukee became incorporated. In 1839, Fr. Patrick Kelly built Milwaukeeís first Catholic Church, St. Peterís. This book captures the story of Milwaukeeís Irish community in photographs, covering everything from the early wave of immigration to todayís annual Irish Fest. ÝÝ

Calvy Family: Irish in American Rural Wisconsin.......2002-03-14
This book is the story of a real family and how they
came to live in a poor farming area in Wisconsin. Their
joys as well as their hardships are all told in a down to earth fashion by May Murphy Thibaudeau who lived as the orphaned
first granddaughter in the large family of aunts and uncles.
The stories as passed down as well as ones the author lived
through give a refreshingly different view of the Irish as
a proud, talented and witty group determined to accomplish
much and survive much. Murphy Thibaudeau's talent as a
teller of tales is evident and you will want to hear more from
her and maybe even visit the Dundee area, swim in Long Lake and
tour the grist mill which still stands. Her life story bears an
uncanny resemblance to Anne Montegomery (of Anne of Green Gables
fame). In fact a "May of Dundee" series could be her children's version of her life story!

A story of survival, love and hope.......2006-03-29
This is more than just a story about an Irish immigrant. It tells of the cruelty of life and the hope brought by love. Leaving a starving Ireland aboard a horrific "coffin Ship" in the mid-19th century, this father and daughter arrive at a prejudiced U.S., and eventually settle in Boston. With all of their difficulties, it is love and hope that keep them focused. Overcoming tragedy and setbacks, a loving and compassionate Bridget McGraw makes her way to Wisconsin and becomes a legend in her own time. Based on family memories and geneaological research, the author shines a bright light on the history of two countries going through difficult times, and the people who persevered. This book leaves you with a good taste in your mouth and a warm feeling in your heart.
A great example of family lineage.......2000-10-31
This book is an excellent example of my family's immigration to the states and the hardships they faced. I have been told so many stories and read a lot of family essays, and I feel this is a shining example. Great job Aunt Peggy Ann!
Bridget, her family and friends come alive........1999-06-20
Margrate Doar tells us the story of a young girl born in County May of the 1850's Ireland. She develops the story of Bridget as she faces life in Ireland as the child of a widowed father, travels to Boston in the USA and eventually to Wisconsin.
Bridget comes alive as she grows up, has a family and grows old. How she faces the problems of life from day to day made her the grandmother I never knew.
Bridget, her family, friends and a few special people become part of your life in this book. I will reread this one and recommend it highly.

St. Patrick's, Maple Grove.......2006-01-14
An inspiring account of Irish settlement in rural Brown, Manitowoc and Outagamie Counties, Wisconsin. Much valuable information as to the places of origin in Ireland of many families. Also includes places of settlement in eastern Canada and eastern USA for some of these families. Information on local, state, and national government participation, education, military service including the Civil War, church foundations, business, and artistic pursuits for many descendants of families from Maple Grove and neighboring townships including Reedsville, Franklin, Cato, Cooperstown, and Morrison, Wisconsin. Factual inaccuracies are few and far between, sometimes because of two separate families with the same or similar family names.

Book Description
Although by the 1980s the Soviet scientific establishment became the largest in the world, little is known about it in the West. Loren Graham presents the first concise, modern history of science in Russia, the Soviet Union, and the commonwealth of Independent States. Thoroughly up to date, the volume covers the Czarist period, the impact of the Russian Revolution, the relationship between science and Soviet society, the strengths of various scientific disciplines, and the effect of the fall of Communism.
Customer Reviews:
Mostly superficial and lacking in substance.......2007-08-13
This book does the very important job of outlining major Soviet accomplishments in the hard sciences (especially mathematics), which are missed by too many Western sources. However, the social-historical criticism is very superficial, as is the appendix on technology which completely misses the majority of development connected with military applications. Individual "technologies" are mentioned in a very superficial way which leaves one in doubt of the author's grasp of the technical issues involved, and contemporary generalities are simply repeated with no original historical analysis. This argument from ignorance is completely inexcusable now that much of the Cold War projects are declassified. But as historians as a rule lack the technical training to go beyond mere "interpretation", we should probably expect no better.

Book Description
This book studies the made-to-order genre of socialist-realist fiction that was produced at the direction of the Main Political Directorate of the Soviet Army and Navy (MPD) as a part of the war for men's minds waged by the Soviet State. The first chapter is a history of the genre, tracing it from its roots in the Revolution to the dissolution of the MDP in 1991. Topics examined in the book include the attitude toward Germans following World War II; the retirement of the World War II generation; military wives; "Dear John" letters; life at remote posts; the military as a socializing institution; the use of lethal force by sentries; attitudes toward field training exercises, heroism, and initiative; legitimacy of command; and the reception of Afghan vets.

Book Description
The detektiv, Russia's version of the murder mystery, has conquered what in Soviet days loved to call itself the most reading nation on earth. The first full-length study of the genre, Russian Pulp vividly illustrates how Russians understand law-breaking and crime, policemen and criminals in ways wholly different from those of Westerners. After explaining why solving a crime is always a social function in Russia, Anthony Olcott examines the staples of thrillers-sex, theft, and murder-to demonstrate that Russians see police officer and criminal, thief and victim, as part of a single continuum: all are products of human imperfection. Offering a unique window into Russian society and culture, this book is intended for all students of Russia, from those making first acquaintance to those who have worked for years to understand this puzzling country and its people.
Customer Reviews:
50 pages of information crammed into 250 pages of text........2005-07-04
Anthony Olcott wrote one of my favorite detective novels with a Russian setting, Murder at the Red October, so it was with much anticipation that I began reading his distillation of the "detektiv" genre of Russian fiction. In general, one can say that Mr. Olcott's valuable insight into the genre is to point out that a Russian's view of the world is not the same as a westerner's and that we just do not comprehend things in the same manner. While we, for example, generally tend to regard individualism as good and collectivism as bad, a Russian is very likely to hold the exact opposite view.
Mr. Olcott cites numerous - in fact, far too many - examples of this from various authors of Russian detektivy. Repetition may be the mother of learning, but re-repetition is just filling up space.
What was especially disappointing, though, was Olcott's thinly veiled attacks on those western authors who write works of fiction with a Russian setting. He disingenuously admits that these authors are successful and have sold millions of books, but he then attacks them for their egregious inaccuracy, especially in matters of Russian language usage. (Hint: Olcott is a professor of Russian.) It seems no one is spared, including Albeury, Clancy, Hyde, Ignatius, LeCarre, et al. The obvious answer, of course, is that these authors write commercially for a non-Russian audience that merely wants a good read. Those readers want as much accuracy and truth in their fiction as possible, but who in his right mind would ever expect true insight from anything written, for example, by Tom Clancy? Criticizing these authors for lacking something they never claimed to possess in the first place is just being petulant.
What's more, I expect that buyers of Olcott's Russian Pulp mostly want an examination of Russian authors' detektivy, not a criticism of the Russian-related fiction of American and British writers. Instead, though, Olcott devotes an entire chapter to this petty nit-picking. In any event, he should already know that he's preaching to the choir.
Olcott wears two hats, one as a writer of award-winning mysteries and the other as an academic. In Russian Pulp it seems that a pedantic academic has won out over the accomplished fiction writer.
Disturbing insights into the nature of Russian democracy.......2002-05-14
Russian Pulp deserves a wide audience. Regrettably, it probably won't find it unless more people come to appreciate its wide ranging implications.
Although ostensibly "about" the Russian detective novel today, the real value of this gem of a book lies in the author's splendid grasp of what the Detektiv genre tells us about Russian democracy today. As Olcott demonstrates, Russian detective novels reflect rampant cynicism and distrust of law, individualism, capitalism and materialism. Rather empowering the reader to help "solve the crime", through the use of clues and evidence, as Western detective novels typically do, the Russian detektiv is little more than a "morality play" designed to show that individuals cannot ignore the will of society.
Reflecting conditions and mores in Russia today, the detektiv depicts good cops as people who are willing to bend the law, while criminals are often portrayed as people who have the temerity to want to improve their own circumstances (the "zero-sum" implication being that, sooner or later, the society will suffer as a result).
For anyone who cares about democracy, Russia, US-Russian relations, public ethics, and many other matters, this is a lively, well-written book that will offer fresh, if disturbing insights, on every page.

Book Description
The author's broad learning and long historical perspective make this thoughtful book a welcome corrective to the shallow triumphalism that has marred much recent writing on the subject. This is a perceptive and provocative book -- David S. Painter, Georgetown University
The Superpowers traces the development of the USA and Russia from 1898 through to 2000, placing the Cold War, from inception to ending, into the wider social, economic and political context.
The Superpowers explores the intertwining history of the two powers chronologically and includes discussion of:
*the inheritance of the two great powers and their imperial background
* World War One and the Russian Revolution
*Capitalism and Socialism
* World War Two and its impact
* the conflicts in Berlin, Czechoslovakia, Vietnam and Afghanistan
*Perestroika and the end of the USSR
* the significance of the events of 1991 and their legacy.
This is the first history of the two major participants and their relationship throughout the twentieth century.
Paul Dukes is Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Aberdeen. His many books include A History of Russia and Russia, 1613-1801.
