The truth at last about the myth of Villers-Bocage! (004).......2006-05-23

For ages, I, like many others who know something of this action, had ideas that Waffen-SS Lt Michael Wittmann had somehow destroyed an English tank battalion/regiment/brigade (depending on what you read!), single-handedly, with his mighty Tiger tank. Certainly, for a long time, there didn't seem as though there was a concerted effort by the Allies to actually debunk this myth. After all, it was this single action that confirmed the reputation of Germany's, and the worlds, greatest ever tank ace. However, in this book I found the first detailed analysis of this action, and more importantly, through the use of extensive photographs (100 in all) taken by German Kriegsberichters (war correspondents), most of which I had never seen before, and of equal importance, Wittmann's own account of his action, which I had never read before. The photos were taken the next day, and the interview with Wittmann was taken on the day of the action, so all the evidence is fresh and absolutely first hand.

Not knowing any better than what I already 'knew' about Villers-Bocage, I was surprised to read how Michael Wittmann himself actually refuted most of what I took to be true about his actions that fateful day. The photos, seen for the first time in sequence, also show a different picture to what has been, up till now, taken as fact. The author, Daniel Taylor, formerly of the British Army, and a lecturer at Sandhurst, does an excellent job of examining the evidence, and showing the reader how he came to the conclusion he arrived at. This book in no way takes anything away from Wittmann's obvious prowess as a panzer commander and ace extraordinaire. What it does do is calmy appraise the chain of events that lead to the making of the myth about his apparent superhuman achievements in his famous Tiger tank. The outcome of the day remains unchanged, the British hope of encircling the German Caen defences was shattered, and the acceptance by the Allies of the German propaganda seems to have re-enforced the morale lowering effect for the British soldier in regards to German Armour superiority in general, and the legendary Tiger tank in particular.

Outstanding!.......2005-10-01

I recently used the 'Battle Zone Normandy: Villers-Bocage' book on a trip to Normandy and Villers-Bocage. The book provides an excellent (relatively brief) history of the battle as well as three very well done 'guided tours' of the battlefield (with directions and maps). Excellent maps and photos (both current and historic) are provided throughout.

The tours in the book proved very useful, interesting, educational and accurate. The town and surrounding area have almost no markings about the battle so the book proved invaluable. The model of Villers-Bocage in the town hall, mentioned in the book, is well worth seeing but it is tucked away in a dark corner of the hall and if not for the book I would have never found it.

The historical accounts in the book are well done and provide interesting details of the battle as one follows the tours. My wife even enjoyed reading them as we went.

My only quibble with the book (as well as others in the series) is that one must flip back and forth throughout the book as one is taking a tour to refer to the various maps and photos. But this is but a minor annoyance. Also not mentioned in the book is an estimated time for each tour. Plan at least approximately two hours for each tour. The book is also focused on visitors from the UK and lacks similar tips for American visitors.

Genuinely Military.......2007-05-14

What I liked about this one is that it is genuinely a 'military history' of the Civil Wars in England, not simply a rehashed chronology - as many books on the period are. There is plenty of first hand material here, and direct quotes from period documents and books which I found particularly engaging. The angle of Scottish intervention in England gets especially good coverage. The hard back which I have is splendidly produced, and one of the things prompting this review is that at the time of writing it looks as though a soft back version is on the way.

To make it to the full five stars I would have liked to see some more campaign maps, as the English Civil is a complex period during which armies moved around crossing and recrossing different areas. This would doubtless also help readers in other countries who are unfamiliar with UK topography. Nevertheless a recommended volume.

A superb one-volume military history.......2006-05-03

From the wonderful description of James I coming to London (in almost indecent haste, if memory of Mr. Reid's text serves) to the Restoration, this book provides an excellent look at the military (army, for those in the US) factors and actions that were part and parcel of the English Civil Wars. As an American wargamer, this volume has provided information, data, orders of battle, battle descriptions, and not a little inspiration. With so little information on this pivotal point in British history available to those of us in the US, this book has proved to be a refreshing draught of cool water on a hot day. Thank you, Mr. Reid!

This text provides perhaps the most concise and authoritative resource for the field of Metallurgical Failure Analysis that I have read. Rather than apporaching failures from a cookbook perspective, that is only linking cause to failure through single case histories, this author presents the fundamental concepts of the discipline and suplements them with appropriate examples.After reading the book, I am considering using it a text to a course that previously could only be approached with personal course notes. This is the most comprehensive and fundamentally organized book I have read in years. Well worth twice the price.

I have used this text three times for teaching a fatigue course.

This text is well written. It is clear and understandable in the presentation of concepts. It covers the right amount of material for a one semester undergraduate elective course in fatigue, however, it's too basic for gradutate level study. The three apporoaches to fatigue life analysis (stress-life, strain-life, and crack growth) are clearly explained along with a cursory but useful coverage of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics. Examples are clearly laid out. One nice feature is the summary of important concepts and equations at the end of each chapter. Another nice feature is chapter 6 which compares and reviews the strenths and limits of applicability of each method.
