              Book Description

Flying a Phantom RF-4C reconnaissance jet amidst air combat-the remarkable technical details, the mission, the derring-do-and the 19 nonflying hours a day: All this told in a gripping series of vignettes by a former pilot of a U.S. Air Force photo reconnaissance jet stationed at an airbase in Udorn, Thailand, during the Vietnam conflict. Formation flying, night photo missions, confrontations with B-52s, the Officer's Club and shows at Udorn, AAA fire, SAM missiles, the "Hanoi Hilton," GIs being killed by their own side-all this and more form a work of literature quite unlike any other emerging from Southeast Asia.

5 out of 5 stars Touched by Vietnam? This is a must read........1997-11-23

This book really moves. Taylor Eubank flew 200 combat missions in Southeast Asia--all unarmed. He was a member of a small group of American servicemen to go into combat unarmed. This makes for exciting flying and exciting reading. The tales of derring-do and night flights and unarmed photo runs over Hanoi are funny and poignant and, well, gripping. I could not stop reading "The Longest Run," which recounts missiles (SAMs) coming from all around while the mission required the aircraft to fly straight and level. Try putting that down! This is a really good read. If you or yours have been touched by the Vietnam conflict in any way, you need to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Doom Pussy is a haunting account of unarmed flight.......1997-11-21

"I have flown into the jaws of the cat of death," is the English translation of a Vietnamese proverb, which applied to flying at night. American aviators simply said, I have seen the Doom Pussy. This story would be good fiction; as it is--true--it is electrifying. That, plus the story of the snake, the guard and spending Monopoly money on the local economy are enough for me to recommend this to anyone. One last pathos: combining Ed Atterberry's plane being shot down with Browning's poen "...Ghent to Aix" works beautifully. Plus we learn how even respected and veteran reporters published false information about the torture or lack of torture of Americans in the Hanoi Hilton...well, I got bleary eyed. Read this. You'll laugh more than you cry, but you'll do both.

                    Book Description

In When Nationalism Began to Hate, Brian Porter offers a challenging new explanation for the emergence of xenophobic, authoritarian nationalism in Europe. He begins by examining the common assumption that nationalist movements by nature draw lines of inclusion and exclusion around social groups, establishing authority and hierarchy among "one's own" and antagonism towards "others." Porter argues instead that the penetration of communal hatred and social discipline into the rhetoric of nationalism must be explained, not merely assumed. Porter focuses on nineteenth-century Poland, tracing the transformation of revolutionary patriotism into a violent anti-Semitic ideology. Instead of deterministically attributing this change to the "forces of modernization," Porter demonstrates that the language of hatred and discipline was central to the way "modernity" itself was perceived by fin-de-siecle intellectuals. The book is based on a wide variety of sources, including political speeches and posters, newspaper articles and editorials, underground brochures, published and unpublished memoirs, personal letters, and nineteenth-century books on history, sociology, and politics. It embeds nationalism within a much broader framework, showing how the concept of "the nation" played a role in liberal, conservative, socialist, and populist thought. When Nationalism Began to Hate is not only a detailed history of Polish nationalism but also an ambitious study of how the term "nation" functioned within the political imagination of "modernity." It will prove an important text for a wide range of students and researchers of European history and politics.

"When Nationalism Began to Hate" is an excellent book. The title is a bit sensationalistic and a bit misleading.

WNBtH is a history of eighteenth century Polish nationalism. It is an attempt to answer the question: Why is it that decent Poles, and certainly decent Polish Catholics, in the 1880s, could not and did not publicly support an anti-Semitic brand of nationalism, and yet by the 1930s, this had changed -- Polish Nationalism and Polish Catholicism were both often openly anti-Semitic?

                    What happened?

Porter takes the reader on a journey through the tragedies of Polish history, and the uprisings that Poles mounted to resist German and Russian colonizers' attempts to eliminate Polish identity, and the theorizing that went on behind these uprisings.

Philo-Semitism was a marked feature of Polish Romantic nationalism, and Jews did participate in the struggle for Polish freedom. Many Poles saw Jews as an integral part of Poland. Mickiewicz created Jankiel, a Polish Jewish hero of the national epic, "Pan Tadeusz." Patriotic Jewish Poles were not just a feature of fiction; Jews like Michal Landy gave their lives in the nationalist struggle.

A feature of Mickiewicz's Romantic Nationalism was the concept of Poland as the "Christ of Nations," that would struggle for the uplift of all humanity. This wasn't just rhetoric -- Poles fought internationally. Poles like Haym Solomon, Tadeusz Kosciuszko, and Casimir Pulaski contributed to the American Revolution in this multi-national, Christian-inspired spirit.

Poland's many uprisings against Russian and German colonizers ended tragically, with the deaths and deportation of many, and even harsher attempts to stamp out Polish language and culture.

These tragedies changed Polish nationalists' views of time -- could time really result in progress? -- and what constituted a Pole. Could Lithuanians, Belorussians, Ukrainians, and Jews ever be part of a successful Polish nation state?

Peasants presented a particular problem. A popular argument stated that Polish uprisings failed because the peasants did not support them, and, in fact, had no reason to. Did it matter to them if they slaved for Poles, Austrians, or Russians? What did peasants care about Poland's literary heritage? They couldn't read. Some regarded peasants as inherently lesser creatures, perhaps inferior because of reincarnation.

Similar questions were asked about Jews and other ethnic minorities.

The answers that Poles, struggling with a highly multi-cultural, multi-faith population, came up with are fascinating, and speak to the mult-cultural, multi-faith world many of us live in today. One can hear echoes on nightly news discussions of how to address Spanish speaking, or Muslim, immigrants to the US.

Porter emphasizes that there is nothing inherently Polish, or Catholic, or Polish-Catholic, about anti-Semitism. Anti-Semitism was a development of one train of nationalist thought, a train of thought inspired by Social Darwinism and Scientific Racism.

Roman Dmowski, the proponent of this train of thought, wrote with brutality about forcing nationalism on peasants, whether they liked it or not, and forcing deportation on Poland's Jews. Dmowski stated, "Every Pole should be the enemy of every German he meets."

Dmowski had suffered under colonization, and he was a trained biologist. He was influenced by Social Darwinism, and saw life as a struggle for the survival of the fittest. He wanted Poles, as he understood Poles, to survive.

Dmowski rejected Poland's Romantic Nationalism, as embodied by Mickiewicz, and Mickiewicz's multicultural, philo-Semitic view of Poland. That approach -- the Romantic approach -- was worthlessly "spiritual" in Dmowski's view, and doomed to failure. Poles and Poland needed to enter the Darwinian struggle for life, and renounce any touchy-feely notions of solidarity with others who were not ethnic Poles.

Again, though this is a scholarly book, it is a fasciating read. Porter writes well. The questions the book engages are questions we are all contemplating in our increasingly globalized world.

I wish I could place "When Nationalism Began to Hate" on the required reading list of all of those who read a book that made a very big splash recently, Jan Tomasz Gross' "Neighbors."

Though I'm sure Gross did not intend this, "Neighbors," and the flood of media that accompanied its release, encouraged the stereotype of Poles as mindless, inherently anti-Semitic, brutes.

As WNBtH shows, multi-cultural societies present a series of challenges, and that is especially true when multi-cultural societies face the added stress of foreign occupation, colonization, and attempts at the elmination of the culture being colonized.

Polish thinkers developed varied ways of dealing with their oppression, and of responding to multi-culturalism. Their words, written a century ago, have resonance for us today.

This is a companion to "Modern Control Systems" by Dorf & Bishop. Much of the text of this book refers back to the "parent" text, and as such some sections of this text seem somewhat "incomplete". Easy to read, good as a stand-alone review of control systems. Not much on "modern control" (most of the book covers classical control). Not a whole lot of Simulink content, mainly Matlab functions used for specific topics. Good example systems.

5 out of 5 stars Essential book for user acceptance testing & contract mgt........2001-05-06

Verification and validation are two important, if often misunderstood, aspects of delivering the big three: Reliability, Availability and Support. One of the reasons for this is technology has outstripped methods, which is what this book rectifies. V&V is not pre-production testing where the goal is to break the application or product, but is a functional qualification test (also known as user acceptance test or product test), where the goal is to ensure that what you have meets requirement specifications. Specifically, verification answers "did we build the right thing?" and validations answers "did we build it right?"

It's one thing to perform V&V for products and monolithic applications and quite another to apply these techniques to more complex systems. This book updates the V&V body of knowledge by showing how to perform V&V in objected-oriented and distributed environments, with an emphasis on specific system types such as data warehouses, inter- and internet systems, etc.

The authors start with a description of processes, models and standards that give you a foundation for incorporating V&V, and then discuss tools and methodologies, documentation and metrics. I especially liked the metrics provided, which will allow you to effectively and accurately measure your V&V process.

Another strong point about this book is that it addresses objected-oriented methods, which are difficult to verify and validate. Here is a real life example why: a global 50 company bought into a directory-enabled security scheme as the basis for their enterprise security. Such schemes are object-oriented and complex. At no point did the company verify or validate what they were buying into, either as a concept of the component products. Worse, the consulting company that "sold" it did not have any design proofs which could be verified and validated, nor did the consulting company or the global 50 company develop any structured acceptance testing. Net result: there is a large company that is betting the security of its internal and external applications on an unverified and unvalidated security scheme. The information in this book would have given both parties a structured approach with which to ensure that what looks good on paper actually works when you implement the design, especially with products that bring with them their own set of flaws. I cited this true story to underscore the value of V&V and to show how often it is not used for mission-critical systems.

The coverage of complex system types and development approaches in this book is must reading by anyone in QA, especially if QA is only performing pre-production testing. V&V is a necessary stage in the development (or procurement) process to ensure that what is eventually going into production conforms to what was specified. If your organization does not perform V&V then this book is all the more important, and will give you the processes and approaches to integrate it into your QA organization. If you are a QA practitioner who is currently performing V&V this book will provide techniques and approaches that will help you meet the growing challenges of verifying and validating increasingly complex systems. Finally, if you are a vendor manager for outsourced application development or application services that are provided from an ASP this book with give you a complete approach to verifying and validating the product or services for which you are contracting.

                        Book Description

Constituents of Modern System-safety Thinking contains the invited papers presented at the Thirteenth annual Safety-critical Systems Symposium, held at Southampton, UK in February 2005.

The papers included in this volume bring together topics that are of the utmost importance in current safety thinking. The core of modern safety thinking and practice is a risk-based approach, and this is not only a common thread running throughout the papers, but is also explored in two of them. Other themes considered include the safety case, safety assessment, accident investigation, and the commonality between the processes and techniques employed in safety and security engineering.

Papers contain extensive industrial experience as well as recent academic research and are presented under the headings: Independent Safety Assessment, Safety and Security, Accident Investigation, Risk and its Tolerability, Achieving and Arguing the Safety of Modular Systems, and Technologies for Dependability.

Now in its fourth edition, this highly regarded text has been streamlined and updated for an undergraduate audience. The book's primary focus is feedback control systems concepts for continuous-time plants, with an emphasis on root locus analysis and design methodologies. Topics include Laplace transforms, state-space representations of systems, root locus methods, frequency domain interpretations of systems, compensators and observers, pole placement and eigenstructure assignment, linear quadratic regulators, robustness, and quantitative feedback theory techniques. The text employs many examples of feedback control systems from several disciplines (electrical, mechanical, aeronautical, etc.) to give the reader physical insight into their theoretical development. It also demonstrates the use of computer-aided design tools to assist and simply the design process. This book provides students with a clear, unambiguous, and relevant exposition of contemporary control theory, arranged in such a way as to help those wanting to pursue a course of self-study. The first few chapters develop the signals and systems background, making the text relatively self-contained.

                        4 out of 5 stars good primer.......2000-04-28

This is a good primer in control theory. Although it may not cover things in depth at times, it offers a good sense of perspective and may be a good starting point for those coming from other fields.

                            Book Description

An introduction to analysis techniques used in the design of linear feedback control systems with an emphasis on both classical and matrix methods. After introducing general state space and input-output systems, the book--which presumes no background beyond dynamics and differential equations--presents all design methods in a building-block sequence, including a thorough analysis of first- and second-order systems as well as general state space systems. In addition to classical topics such as Root Locus, Bode design methods and Nyquist stability, it examines eigenvalue placement and observer design techniques for linear systems, systems with uncertain inputs and/or parameters, analogue computer implementation, and redesign for digital implementations.
