Book Description
Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 was the beginning of the United States' battle with Japan during World War II. In the months following the attack, Japan was successful in a series of victories throughout Southeast Asia and the Western Paci
Customer Reviews:
An analysis of the strategy of the war in the Pacific........2006-11-13
This is not your typical book. It is a thesis on the strategy of both opponents in the Pacific. For that, it sheds new light on why the Japanese and Americans did what they did. It talks of what motivated the Japanese to go to war. They wanted to fight the Americans to a draw and keep Asia for themselves. However after their brillant series of victories, a balance was begun. At that point, either side could have won. As the author relates, the pistol was laying in the street. With that, the Americans grabbed the pistol and went on to victory.
This is dry reading at times. However it is a nice short summary of the crucial time when victory hung in the balance in the Pacific. The author sheds new strategic light on what happened during this phase of the war.
A Nice Little Book on the Thoughts of a Master in his Field.......2006-11-01
H.P. Willmott is the master of the WWII Pacific Theatre. He's forgotten more than most scholars will ever know. But this book is a bit odd. You are better off thinking of it as Willmott's essay on the May 1942-October 1943 period. He touches on everything important, make some fascinating and provocative points, but does not go into anything at length. Some will find this frustrating, but I think this is an easy read (and I do not always find his style that accessible) expressing the thoughts of an expert on what he knows best. Footnotes are very limited. It does not go into anything in sufficient depth to qualify as a quality monograph, but you will find it accessible and provacative.
Badly needs editing........2006-02-07
I am new to this subject (the Pacific War) and as far as I can tell Willmot knows his stuff. If you already know the story of the pacific war and are looking for some intelligent analysis then this is the book for you. The details of tactics and individual battles are largely skipped over in favour of strategic analysis. If you are new to the subject and just want a recounting of the basic story then I am sure there are many better books out there.
The problem with this book is the writing; Willmot is NOT a good writer and really could have used a ghost writer or at least an editor to make this a more enjoyable read. Sentences are long and disjointed, the story is hard to follow and jumps all over the place and I found myself reading entire paragraphs over and over again. And if you want to read exciting accounts of pivotal battles, go elsewhere: the author has an annoying habit of spoiling the suspense by telling you the *outcome* of each battle *before* the actual story! It doesn't lead to rivetting reading.
Having said that I did battle through and read the whole book. The strategic story is told very well, and the discussions about the strategy and the "bigger picture" are very interesting. It would be great to read a second edition of this book, with the writing improved.
Extremely good.......2005-02-15
Many books describe the Pacific Ocean naval battles in great detail.
Willmott shows you why they were fought and why they're important. While not as in-depth as his studies of the preceding period (_Empires in the Balance_ and _The Barrier and the Javelin_), this is a very well-done study of the 1942-43 clashes in the Pacific, and of high-level strategic thinking on both sides. Anyone interested in how wars in general, or this war in particular, were fought, will find this very valuable.

Making People Disappear.......2000-04-25
An excellent book which uncovers the use of retuching to produce propaganda images. It covers the Soviet Union, the Eastern Bloc, China, Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and Castro's Cuba.
It will be an eyeopener for many naive people.

Book Description
Robert Kohler shows exactly how entrepreneurial academic scientists became intimate "partners in science" with the officers of the large foundations created by John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie, and in so doing tells a fascinating story of how the modern system of grant-getting and grant-giving evolved, and how this funding process has changed the way laboratory scientists make their careers and do their work.
"This book is a rich historical tapestry of people, institutions and scientific ideas. It will stand for a long time as a source of precise and detailed information about an important aspect of the scientific enterprise. . .It also contains many valuable lessons for the coming years."—John Ziman, Times Higher Education Supplement
Book Description
Everyone has heard about animals that are now extinct. But author Bradley Trevor Greive wants everyone to learn about animals that can be saved'and then to do something about it.In inspiring narrative and striking photographs of everything from humpback whales to pigmy possums to African spoonbills, Greive and wildlife photographer Mitsuaki Iwago spell out Earth's diverse animal inventory. They highlight species that once were plentiful but now are scarce'some that are now sadly extinct'and point out specific dangers that other animals face. The authors also present a call to action: 'To preserve our home and the priceless creatures that dwell within it you need only see the world as it is and have a vision of how it could be.' Priceless is a must-have book for everyone interested in the environment, biodiversity, and in all life on Earth

This is truly a wonderful book with incredible wildlife photos accompanied by a simple yet poignant narrative highlighting the need for conservation.

A Priceless Reminder.......2006-07-09
This is a beautifully photographed book and the language that accompanies these images is heartfelt. This is a must have book in every home and classroom.
A Celebration of Our Environment.......2006-02-13
The combination of breath-taking photography, and insightful and inspiring prose create an awesome yet humbling book. Its appeal is universal--everyone can learn, if we listen to its message.
I Love This Book.......2005-08-19
This book is one of the simplest, yet one of the most inspiring and enjoyable books I have ever read. The photography in it is amazing and Greive deffinately has a way with his words. In addition to this intriging visiual presentation, there is much to learn in this book as well. Learn about endangered and threatened animals thoughout the world while looking at unique images of them. This is a must read for everyone and it should be a required book for schools throughout the world to read instead of many other required books that have no appeal to students.
In addition, on the inside cover it reads, "BTG (author) is donating all his author royalties from the worldwide sales of Priceless to his principal wildlife conservation charity, the Taronga Foundation." Thats gotta say something about the book in itself!!!
My favourite book of wildlife photography.......2003-10-26
Reading through Priceless is a bittersweet experience. It is a joy to look at the wonderful photography of Mitsuaki Iwago, and also a joy to learn amazing facts about some of these animals and to detect the passion for conservation and wildlife protection in author Bradley Trevor Greive's text. But there is a sadness: we learn how difficult it is for most species to adapt to the vast changes made by humans to this planet, so difficult that many of them could not do it, and no longer exist.
We learn that "even polar bears from the Arctic Circle and penguins from Antarctica, creatures from the two most isolated and pure economic systems on earth, have a substantial build-up of toxic industrial chemicals stored in their fat deposits"; we learn that the first bomb dropped on Berlin during the Second World War killed the only elephant in the Berlin zoo; that the last passenger pigeon in existence died in the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914. The most important lesson from the book, however, is that if we don't do something soon to stop poisoning our world, ultimately us humans will be the ones suffering.
But the book ends with a message of hope, telling us that there are ways we can make a difference and giving suggestions of things we can do. Greive finally pays tribute to Gerald Durrell, celebrated zoologist, conservationist and author. The last 25 pages give information and facts about all the animals featured in the photographs throughout the book.
I strongly feel that if everyone read through this book, they would appreciate their planet a little more and want to help things change for the better. If I could afford to do so I would give it to everyone I know. It is very easy to read, the text on each page limited to a few sentences which apply to the photographs. The photos range from light-hearted and whimsical to completely awe-inspiring. The perfect gift for animal lovers and environmentalists, but I urge everyone to take a look. It is an inspiring experience.
Book Description
GROWING WHOLE: SELF-REALIZATION ON AN ENDANGERED PLANET supports the search for both personal and global transformation through the powerful tools and perspectives of psychosynthesis. Written in a warm, personal style, the book offers structure and techniques for people to find and follow their own path of heart. It explores basic concepts, perspectives, and applications, with stories and examples, interspersed with many exercises the reader can use easily at home.
Customer Reviews:
Simple, straightforward, insightful and practical...........2006-05-02
In "Growing Whole" Molly Brown does a good job of summarizing the key elements of psychosynthesis as developed by Roberto Assagioli. She explains the essentials and shows how one can apply it to various aspects of life immediately.
This book is written in a simple, straightforward manner and has lots of useful exercises. Many of these exercises build on each other and they use the power of art to access the unconscious. However, you don't need to be an artist to benefit from the drawing exercises; they are more about exploring the psyche through non-verbal means.
In my opinion, psychosynthesis is an underrated tool for personal growth. It is offers a very optimistic, practical and transpersonal model that makes sense. Roberto Assagioli was a psychiatrist and he was respected by Freud and Jung. However, he was very open-minded and integrative. Therefore, this area did not develop into a very formal school with clearly delineated boundaries. That's my only explanation for why it is not more popular.
Psychosynthesis encourages being curious about your own process, working with sub-personalities which are conceptually very similar to Jungian complexes and using lots of visualization, active imagination and drawing techniques to get at one's depth.
One of the more interesting aspects of psychosynthesis is the concept of having repressed areas of the superconscious or higher reaches of the psyche. I think Assagioli has a lot in common with Jung, but in some ways his typology of the psyche is easier to work with in a practical way.
My guess is a lot of people who read this book will rate it a five and wonder why I rated it a four. My answer is that it could have contained more meat and some people might find that they want to know more after reading it. If you fall in that category of reader, I would try to get a copy of Psychosynthesis by Assagioli and branch out from there. Piero Ferrucci and John Firman are also respected authors that write about psychosynthesis.
A "portable mentor" on the journey toward Self realization.......2003-10-04
In "Growing Whole", Molly Young Brown offers the reader her wisdom, experience and guidance, rooted in the traditions of psychosynthesis and the awakening concern for our planetary environment. This book is a practical, insightful and spiritual "mentor" for a person's journey toward Self-realization. This well written guide is filled with exercises which provide a productive and enlightened model for personal transformation and ultimately leads us to "bring our gifts into action in the world". I highly recommend reading and using this book along with the audio tape companion journal also by the author (Exploring the Wilderness Within)--effective resources for "those who yearn to make a difference".
Support for personal & spiritual growth.......2001-06-29
This book provides both perspectives and methods for "growing whole" in a world full of crises and challenge. I appreciate the author's perspectives on how "work on oneself" helps contribute to the world; so often personal work and social action are seen as separate and even conflicting. The exercises found throughout are easy to do on one's own, or with others in a group.
I also recommend the accompanying audiotape/journal called "Growing Whole: Exploring the Wilderness Within."
Book Description
Endangered Planet is a timely examination of the state of the earth's ecosystems. Today, humans influence every natural habitat on the planet. The consequences can be devastatingdozens of species are wiped out each year, coasts and oceans are fouled with oil spills, and grasslands and forests are destroyed to feed the appetite of modern agriculture. Endangered Planet also reveals how renewable energy, recycling, and wildlife protection will play a key role in the survival of Earth.

full of info.......2005-04-02
This is a very informative book on the environment. The first chapter teaches us about life on earth and the things that we need to live. The next chapter tells us about threats to the earth such as population growth, the greenhouse effect and air pollution. The third and final chapter is all about things that we can do to help protect the earth such as conserving resource, recycling, and wildlife protection.
What did you like or not like about the book?
I liked the fact that at the end of each chapter has a section called Go Further. This section features vocabulary words, websites, and booklists that kids can look for to learn more.
Would you recommend this book? Why or Why not?
This is a great book for kids ages 8-11 interested in ecology. They will enjoy the mix of pictures and useful information. The book would even make a great resource for report writing

Book Description
The present rate and extent of species extinction -- estimated by some scientists as one species every 20 minutes -- are unprecedented in the history of mankind. Human activities are responsible for nearly all species loss, yet ethical aspects of this crisis are rarely mentioned. Any concern expressed tends to be over potentially valuable resources -- information for scientists, or compounds that could be used in new medicines -- that are lost when a species disappears.
In The Death of Our Planet's Species, Martin Gorke argues that such a utilitarian perspective is not only shortsighted but morally bankrupt. Holding doctoral degrees in both ecology and philosophy, Gorke is uniquely qualified to examine the extinction crisis from both scientific and philosophical perspectives. He offers a wide-ranging review of the literature on the subject, drawing together those two lines of reasoning that are almost always pursued separately.
After critical examination of the current state of relevant ecological knowledge, Gorke presents a carefully considered case for attributing intrinsic value to all of nature, including all species. At the heart of his argument is an analysis of the concept of morality. According to this analysis, the universal character of morality does not permit us to establish limits of moral considerability. More precisely, every act of exclusion from the moral community is an arbitrary act and is not compatible with a moral point of view.
The Death of Our Planet's Species sets forth a sound and original argument about the philosophical and ethical dimensions of species conservation. Throughout, the author combines a high level of theoretical sophistication with clear and straightforward writing. Orignially published in German, this Island Press edition makes The Death of Our Planet's Species available for the first time to English-speaking experts and lay readers.
Customer Reviews:
Must Read.......2003-12-10
Gorke's book brings methodological and ethical issues of practicing and using ecological research into a clear focus. He asks a series of difficult questions about the state of the science and addresses the complex sets of social and ecology interactions that must be considered in any realistic discussion of extinction, sustainability, or "ecosystem health." A must read, but perhaps troubling to the epistemologically faint-of-heart.
A profound philosophical and ecological wake-up call.......2003-10-19
Knowledgeably written by Martin Gorke (Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Ethics at the University of Greifswald, Germany), The Death Of Our Planet's Species: A Challenge To Ecology And Ethics is a profound philosophical and ecological wake-up call concerning the mass extinctions caused by the explosion of human population with all that this phenomena comprises. Expressing the terrible losses caused by the destructions of entire species, and denouncing the moral bankruptcy of valuing species only with regard to how useful they appear to humans, The Death Of Our Planet's Species is a profound, forceful, extensively researched warning of the need to respect life on Earth itself -- and should be part of every environmental activist, academic, and community library Environmental Studies collection and reading list.
