4 out of 5 stars Good, but.......2007-06-02

The War North of Rome offers and excellent review of the movements of Allied combat units in the face of their German nemesis in the last two years of World War II. The book is well written and moves at an enjoyable pace, bridging the strategic and tactical movements with personal accounts of heroism and the struggles of the common Allied soldier slogging through incredibly difficult terrain and a dogged enemy. My criticisms of the book are three-fold. First, the maps provided are very limited. Unless you have a detailed knowledge of the villages, rivers, mountains and highways in Italy, it is very difficult to follow the concise descriptions of troop movements in any meaningful way (the photos provided are generally uninteresting, general and non-descript to the actions taking place). Second, while there are good references to the thoughts and actions of the German commanders, there are no accounts of the common German soldier beyond information passed along from prisoners that the bombings were demoralizing. After all, the conditions including total lack of air support, unbearable and constant shelling, and the effect of constant retreat and death for the Axis are as viable and telling as the impact of weather and constant advance for the allies. I would have liked at least a few personal accounts from the Axis grunts to help balance out the book. Finally, the end is too rushed. The Allies sweep over the Po and the Germans surrender May 2. It would have been interesting to me to see the conditions of surrender and a discussion of those involved especially as fractured units endeavoured to hold on, retreat into Austria, or surrender independently. Overall, this is an excellent military read on a front all too forgotten - its just that is could have been a bit better with another 50 to 100 pages and maps.

4 out of 5 stars Detailed, but............2006-08-03

This is a welcome book as it covers a neglected campaign, but the book is marred by an impression of sloppiness. If the publishers had provided better maps they might have realized that often left is used when it should be right, east instead of west, an endless series of misstatements geographically. As the book is a compilation of army and divisional histories, it often ignores actions not covered in its sources, creating many disconcerting gaps. For example the 8th Army storms one river line, then the book goes to a chapter or two on the 5th Army, and when it returns to the 8th Army it has advanced unnoticed twenty or thirty miles further. Sometimes it seems if no one cared: in the final chapter half the footnotes disappeared. It's a good book and worth the price, but you cannot help wishing a little more effort had been made: in the end it must be described as the best we are going to get.

3 out of 5 stars A Blizzard of Details.......2004-04-22

I originally bought the hardcover edition for research purposes. It doesn't have the narrative flow of Rick Atkinson's "An Army at Dawn" and is a bit of a slog for the casual reader. However, there are many gems contained within, such as references to the Polish troops whose heroism was rewarded at the Yalta Conference by turning them over to the Russians after the war. There is little reference to the role played by the various air forces in both tactical and strategic support, and I found that disappointing. However, the assault on the Gothic Line is pretty well covered, and there is a blizzard of details on troop movements. The action is presented in a very dry, forthright manner. It depends more on official reports than on first hand accounts. I'd still buy it as a reference work, though another reviewer presents a good case for carefully checking other sources too.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it, the real unknown war!!.......2000-08-04

I read this book while I was living in Italy, so I found it even more interesting. The fall of Rome happened the same time the Invasion of Normandy did, and with the Battles in Western Europe raging on, this arena of combat has allways been overlooked. While few can name any key battles after the fall of Rome, the combat was as heroic and bloody as in any theater. Brooks does an amazing job of recanting this remarkable campaign. The level of detail is superb, and the book was very easy to read. The vast types of units that are described (US Mountain troops, Ethnic units, and varoius allies) makes the book even more enjoyable. This might be a tough book to find, however keep trying, it is well worth it.

3 out of 5 stars Readable but flawed........1998-01-27

The book is very detailed about the progress of the campaign. But there is a very serious mistake in the last page. Brooks writes that the town of Torbole was destroyed in a house to house battle. This is absolutely wrong, I lived practically next door and can assure you that Torbole survived unscathed. This throws into doubt all the rest of the book. Also there is no record among the population that any American soldiers were killed in tunnel # 5. But while dinamiting the road a contingent of German troops (actually they were from Bolzano)was decimated by a premature explosion and were laid to rest in a side chamber in one of the tunnels; the entrance was then bricked up.

        Book Description

The Falcons have a problem. They've lost the first two games of the season. Although they have the skill, they lack height. Convinced that all they need is just one big guy, the members of the seventh-grade boys' basketball team have all but given up hope of ever winning a game. Then Michael Mancino comes across an old issue of Sports Illustrated and discovers the similarly "vertically challenged" UCLA Bruins, who went on to win the 1964 NCAA Championship with an aggressive and hard-to-beat full-court zone press used to compensate for a short roster. Convinced that this tough defensive strategy is the answer they've been looking for, Michael and the rest of the team hit the court with a surprise for everyone, including their coach. Will the Falcons be able to make a comeback and win the dreaded end-of-the-season game against the much bigger eighth-grade team?

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You cannot teach height, but you can teach the UCLA press.......2004-01-08

"Full Court Fever" tells the story of Michael Mancino and his friends on the seventh-grade basketball team, who are facing a dismal season because although these are good shooters, they are also short. Their coach teaches them how to box out to get rebounds, but the teams they play have kids tall enough to just reach over and grab the missed shots. Then Michael and his friends discover some old issues of "Sports Illustrated" that explain the full-court press than U.C.L.A. used to win back-to-back N.C.A.A. championships in 1964-1965, the first in the storied career of the Wizard of Westwood, John Wooden. The Bruins did not have a player taller that 6-5, but by working a full-court press and being in better condition, they won. Michael and his friends decide to practice the U.C.L.A. press and see if it can help them.

Consequently, "Full Court Fever" is exactly the type of juvenile sports story we have come to expect from Fred Bowen, where the point is to teach the kids who read this book a lesson about a particular sport, in this case basketball. If there is a sport where kids need to learn the right way to play the game, then that is basketball, when dunking the ball is more important than playing defense, learning to shoot, knowing how to block out, and all the other things that win games put together. Bowen always accomplishes this by using real world examples, with "The Real Story" provided in the back of the book with accompanying photographs. Of course, if you are trying to teach a lesson about basketball, there is nobody better to learn from than John Wooden (the first man to be in the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach), and this particular lesson can certainly provide results, although obviously a coach who understands the principles of this or any other press would be helpful.

A subplot in this book involves Dikembe Obiku, a new seventh-grader from Nigeria who is taller than most of the teachers and who could be the "big man" the teams so desperately wants. But while Dikembe likes to play ball and played forward or center on his team back home, he is, of course, talking about soccer and not basketball. It reminds me of a short story I read a long time ago about a high school basketball team that lacked a big man when a 7-foot student suddenly showed up at the school. The joke was that he was from France, and was a very good skier, but he joins the team and sits on the bench for the big game. The other team keeps looking at him and in the final minute of a close game he comes on the court and the other team falls apart. But Bowen has a more realistic goal for Dikembe to play in the climax this story. However, I was surprised the Bowen did not point out that some of NBA basketball stars at center who started out in life playing lots of soccer (e.g., Patrick Ewing, Hakeem Olajuwon), developed the hand-foot coordination that helped them become great shot blockers, because that is another less worth learning (especially if you are not short enough to help out on the full-court press).

        4 out of 5 stars Dave's Review.......2001-04-12

Full Court Fever was a good book. I did it for a book report, so that kind of ruined it. I'm here because I was looking for a summary and I saw this. The plot is good. The Falcons seventh grade basketball team can't win a game becuase of a lack of big men. Then Mike, a Falcons player, discoveriers the Full Court Press used by UCLA, who won a championship with it! The 7-grade Falcons beat thier biggest rivals in the end, the eigth-graders.

This book is currently in print and available from The Collins Press (1999). It provides wonderful information on the genealogy and history of the Bowen family, who were minor landlords in the north County Cork area. The description of the last garden party at Mitchelstown Castle on 5th August 1914 (the day after England declared war on Germany) is particularly evocative, especially as the occasion set the scene for the demise of the landed ascendancy in mid-Munster. Although not ranked amongst Bowen's best works, it is nonetheless a well written blend of history, folklore and personal narrative.

Between May 1905 and April 1907, the U.S. Supreme Court authorized the Secretary of the Interior to identify the descendants of Eastern Cherokees entitled to participate in the distribution of more than $1 million authorized by Congress. The purpose of the authorization was to settle outstanding claims made under treaties between the U.S. government and the Cherokees in 1835-36 and 1845.

On May 28, 1909, Mr. Guion Miller, representing the Interior Department, submitted his findings with respect to 45,847 separate applications for compensation (encompassing about 90,000 individual claimants). Miller qualified about 30,000 persons inhabiting 19 states to share in the fund. Ninety percent of these individuals were living west of the Mississippi River, but all of them were considered to be Eastern Cherokee by blood, that is, descendants of the Cherokee Nation that had been evicted from Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee in 1835. (The Interior agent submitted a supplemental report in January 1910 that resulted in another 610 eligibles.)

The volume at hand is the first in a series of books by Mr. Jeff Bowen based on the Guion Miller applications. The author begins with a helpful introduction describing the origins of the Guion Miller rolls and the methodology used in abstracting them. The bulk of the book, of course, comprises abstracts of the first 3,000 of the 45,847 examined by Mr. Miller. Mr. Bowen has culled every shred of genealogical value from the applications (part of Record Groups 75 and 123 of the Bureau of Indian Affairs), which in every case provides the application number, the applicant's name and city of residence, the number of other persons in the applicant's family, references to family members found in other applications, and the disposition of the application. In many instances, moreover, Mr. Bowen has supplemented the core elements found in the abstracts with references to other family members by name, relationship(s), and dates of birth and/or death. The researcher will find references to about 8,000 Cherokee descendants in this volume, each of whom is identified in the name index at the back.

Judging from this inaugural volume, the series Eastern Cherokee by Blood, 1906-1910 promises to be one of the most important additions to the literature of Native American genealogy in recent years.

The book was received in great condition. Information is exactly what I was searching for, just wrong application numbers. Was needing in the 26,000 and up range, that was my mistake, but the book is still extremely helpful and full of great genealogical information.

The volume at hand is the second in a series by Mr. Jeff Bowen based on the Guion Miller applications (see also Volume I, Volume III, and Volume IV). Volume II, like its predecessor, begins with a helpful Introduction describing the origins of the Guion Miller rolls and the methodology used in abstracting them. The text itself consists of 3,775 additional applications of the 45,847 examined by Mr. Miller. The name index at the back of the each volume makes it easy to find every such reference. When completed, the series Eastern Cherokee by Blood, 1906-1910promises to be one of the most important additions to the literature of Native American genealogy in recent years.

Many books have tried to shed light on why the greatest minds of 20th century physics designed the most horrific weapon in history. Brian VanDeMark tries a new tack in Pandora's Keepers: the group biography. Instead of focusing on just Oppenheimer, or Bohr, or Teller, this book encompasses the nine men at the core of the United States' effort to build an atomic bomb. By avoiding individual stories, he reveals that these men collectively were more than the sum of their brilliant parts.

It was no secret that Hitler was attempting to achieve nuclear fission, and many of the nine were Europeans who had seen the horrors of the Third Reich up close. Beyond any care for ethics or morals, they wanted to beat Hitler to the Bomb. But though they functioned as a scientific juggernaut together, some of the men suffered pangs of anxiety when alone. Leo Szilard, for instance, feared the results of his early experiments.

Szilard flipped the switch, saw the dreaded pulses, and watched them for several minutes with mounting horror.... "That night," Szilard later recalled, "there was very little doubt in my mind that the world was headed for grief."

Readers of Richard Rhodes' classic Making of the Atomic Bomb will find some new insights here as VanDeMark casts a wide net for relevant details. Pandora's Keepers tells this familiar story with new energy and immediacy, bringing to life the difficult drama of science in wartime. --Therese Littleton

5 out of 5 stars The Pride and Shame of 9 Men.......2005-12-05

Even if you've read many of the A-bomb books (as I have), you'll find a new angle here. That angle involves the personalities of 9 of the physicists who were swept from their idyllic careers of research and teaching to create the atomic bomb. Virtually everyone of them lives to regret their participation in the Manhattan Project, with the notable exception of Edward Teller. Teller, of course, goes on to develop the H-bomb in the early 1950's and is despised by most of his former atomic bomb colleagues.
Oppenheimer, Fermi, Bethe, Bohr, Teller, Lawrence, Compton, Rabi, Szillard. By book's end these will be more than names and faces; these 9 very different, very complicated men came together for a couple of short years and were forever linked. In 1943 they thought they were saving the world. By 1946 most were afraid they may have destroyed it. VanDeMark has done a marvelous job of fitting 9 biographies into a very readable, not overly long book.
