Book Description

This Very Short Introduction offers a powerfully-written explanation of the war's complex origins and course, and explores its impact on a personal and international scale. It also provides an ethical reflection on the war in the context of Europe's tumultuous twentieth century, highlighting why it has inspired some of the greatest writers of our time, and how it continues to resonate today in Britain, continental Europe, and beyond. Throughout the book, the focus is on the war as an arena of social change where ideas about culture were forged or resisted, and in which both Spaniards and non-Spaniards participated alike. These were conflicts that during the Second World War would stretch from Franco's regime, which envisaged itself as part of the Nazi new order, to Europe and beyond. Accordingly, this book examines Spanish participation in European resistance movements during World War II and also the ongoing civil war waged politically, economically, judicially and culturally inside Spain by Francoism after its military victory in 1939. History writing itself became a battleground and the book charts the Franco regime's attempt to appropriate the past. It also indicates its ultimate failure - as evident in new writings on the war and, above all, in the return of Republican memory now occurring in Spain during the opening years of the twenty-first century.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Detailed Introduction.......2007-05-03

This is one of the best books on the Spanish Civil War I have ever had. Not only does it do a great job at explaining the events before and during the war, but it dares to dive into the events afterwards. The major battles, the political parties, and the prisons.
It also has a huge list of books for further reading and a great time line. I would suggest it for any person interested in Spain or history in general. Helen Graham has done a great job.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Substantial Introduction.......2006-03-17

There's so much material in this little book that I had to read it twice: the first time I was overwhelmed.

There's an 8 page chronology at the back of the book which I suggest reading first, to get an overview of the flow of events.

I had arrived at this book after reading Rudolf Rocker's "The Tragedy of Spain" and Colin Ward's "Anarchism: A Very Short Introduction", both of which discuss the role of the anarcho-syndicalist trade-union CNT in this civil war. The Wikipdea entry "Anarchism in Spain" also presents a significant role for the CNT in the Spanish Civil War. Graham references the CNT in a number of places but in minor ways, so I'm left uncertain as to whether they played as large a role as Rocker and Ward indicate. Graham notes some conflicts between the CNT and socialist groups which interfered with their working together effectively. Without help from England, France, and the United States and with limited help from the Soviet Union, the Left in Spain was at a huge disadvantage, given Italy and Germany's support of Franco. It seemed remarkable that the Left was able to fight for as long as it did.

I don't recall studying anything about this civil war in school, let alone knowing how much was involved. The relevance seems high: a country in which conservatives and liberals were in serious conflict. The conservatives started a war. A sobering lesson: bombing of, imprisonment of and execution of liberals. The conservatives won.

Graham has done her job in this introduction: I'm encouraged to read more about the Spanish Civil War. Graham provides 5 pages of further reading which includes some websites (3 in Spanish 2 in English).

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing !!!.......2001-09-15

The absolute BEST book I've ever read on France and the French. Enthusiastic though unbiased, extensive and extremely well-documented but never dry or boring, lively but not too "journalist-like", this is an absolute must-read for whoever has an interest in this fascinating - though sometimes hard to grasp - country. Readers will likely understand France better thanks to this book. A real masterpiece. The author's knowledge of France (its history, famous authors, historians, politics, cultural patterns) is simply astonishing.

5 out of 5 stars oustanding journalistic masterpiece.......1999-07-20

deep, unbiased, well researched in all aspects of the review. Written with excellent litterary talent, the book, although extensive, is never boring. One of the best I have ever read about the French and their country.

5 out of 5 stars a magnificent portrayal of France and the French.......1997-11-23

As an American in France I am particularly interested, andreasonablyknowledgeable about, works on france. I found Bernstein's book to provide an accurate and lively portrayal of a subject which is all too often romanticized or written about in a condescending way.

        Book Description

Now in its Second Edition, this book is an excellent resource for electrical students and professionals who need a comprehensive explanation of theory and practical applications of electrical machines. The book includes nine experiments enabling readers to reinforce the theory discussed earlier. Students begin with a study of magnetism and magnetic induction, single-phase isolation transformers, current transformers, and autotransformers. A unit on three-phase power refreshes the student with basic three-phase connections and calculations before proceeding into three-phase transformers.

If you are looking for clear explanations of basic electrical principles, Mr. Kaiser does an excellent job of using mathmatical formulas to explain them. His examinations of ac theory are clear, concise, and written at apprenctice-level. The writing style is certainly dry.

Motor control occupies a very short section at the end of this book, and it is badly out of date. Look elsewhere if you are interested in recent technological advances.

Even thou I have not completed this book in its entirety, I am pleased to say that I have found it to be informative.

I have been in the electrical industry for almost twenty five years and in all that time there have been several aspects of electrical theory which I have never really fully understood.

This book has made some of the mathematical problems seem so simple and easily understood that I now feel that I have just come out of my apprenticeship.

Anyone who wishes to understand the logic behind electrical theory needs to read this book.

          Book Description

Most scientists agree that temperatures near the surface of the Earth appear to be increasing, but there is controversy about what this warming might mean. This volume explores the controversy.

Is it a potentially catastrophic event caused by humans, or simply a natural and harmless fluctuation such as Earth has seen before? Should governments take steps, including those described by the Kyoto Protocols, to slow down Global Warming -- and would these steps be effective?

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The bad thing about these types of books is..........2006-08-23

to actually be able to decipher what is true in them, you need to already have read several books (in which case, why are you now reading this book?). This doesn't mean this book is bad -- it's not. It stays out of the argument and only provides the argument, doing it's best to be unbiased. In doing so, it inevitably created a book where the contributors contradict eachother since there is no real referee. If there was a referee, this book would not be unbiased. Okay, with that in mind, I see three types of people who may be interested in reading this book.

Type I: I'm uncertain about the debate and looking for knowledge. I may have some background, but I cannot tell what is fact and what is not yet when arguments on the topic arise.

Type II: I'm looking for opposing viewpoints for research, but not to find out "truth" (for example, a school research project).

Type III: I've read a lot of information about global warming already and I'm mostly aware of the issues for and against. I understand to a pretty good degree how the debate has developed in the last few years, both scientifically and politically.

          To Types I & II:
This book cannot (should not) stand alone in your research, but it is a good starting point. If it does stand alone, then you'll be even more confused about what is legitimate and what isn't than when you started -- if you do this, you will know the arguments but cannot say what is fact and what isn't. Look carefully at arguments/motives. To give this topic a fair reading, you will need to commit a good amount of time to other research. You will also need to take the approach of Type III after you get a good information base. (You could actually skip to the Type III approach immediately, but then you cannot stand up to arguments once you've made up your mind.)

          To Type III:
You may benefit by instead looking for answers to your specific questions and analysing the people behind the arguments rather than reading this book, which will afford nothing significantly new or profound insight into what is true. Do research by looking especially for people who work against their own interest and see what side they've come out on. (If a solar company executive says global warming is a fluke, you should probably take their opinion carefully since they are working against their interest. Likewise, if an oil company executive says global warming is real, then that lends them strong credibility since they are acting against their financial interest.) If you complete this type III approach and have a good knowledge base, I think you'll come out on the "correct side" (from my point of view).

If you complete "Type III" and also read the book, you will probably spot some false claims and be wishing you could let everyone who reads this book know about them (but you cannot without sounding biased, which is why I refuse to say which side I'm on... :) ).

I know I cannot really justify my disappointed about this book (I'm disappointed that it doesn't comment on what's true and what isn't), since otherwise it would just be labeled as another piece of propaganda and end up being wasted paper. If you intend to read this book, just keep in mind it is like reading articles by politicians -- what they say makes some sense, but are the basic arguments true to begin with? There are lies and poor logic scattered in this book, but sadly you won't find out who is lying or who is using bad logic without doing serious analysis. Don't look to this book to settle things, but look to it as a source of viewpoints only to start from. You probably won't really settle your opinion until you look at how people are responding for/against their interests on this topic.

2 out of 5 stars The Debate is Over!.......2006-06-03

U.S. opposition to the Kyoto Protocol has been consistent since President Bush panned it in 2001. One problem, in many Americans' eyes, is that it does not demand developing nations reduce greenhouse emissions - it seemed fairer to drafters to ask nations like the U.S. and Canada who consume large amounts of energy for luxuries, to cut back their consumption first. However, the biggest problem was the initial credibility of those claiming global warming was a serious problem.

Now, however, increased data and discussion has essentially resolved the issue in favor of those raising the alarm. Thus, reading "Global Warming" is like reading a mystery while knowing all the while how it turns out.

Normally a good thing to present both sides of an issue; however, debates today too often involve special interests that slant or even lie about data. There is considerable evidence that this has repeatedly occurred regarding the topic of global warming. Those making such false claims then take advantage of "fairness," especially when that does not offer a means of assessing the credibility of opposing claims. "Global Warming" does not do this.

Bottom Line: Cut your reading time in half and only read the chapters concerned about global warming.

Well, whether or not you believe in global warming (even I don't claim to be 100% sure), there is probably at least one scientist in this book who shares your viewpoint.

In the first half of the book are the "hard science" essays, and there are all sorts of different predictions represented here - ranging from catastrophic floods and worldwide famines to insect plagues and a land rush in the Arctic. On the other hand, there are a few essays that say that the "problem" of global warming will bring us more blessings than it will take away. And then there are quite a few essays arguing that global warming is caused by the sun or does not exist at all.

The second half of the book is devoted to essays promoting or debunking various cures and remedies for global warming.

This book is a must have or you must borrow it from your library and read it. It shows what we are doing is very wrong like what we throw away and what we could compost. There are chapters in this book on garbage, recycling, toxic waste disposal and innovations that will help reduce waste. This book has back to back arguements on each issue which is very good because then you get to see both sides of the arguement. A must for an enviromentalist and any regular person. go and read it. it will help you in life
