Customer Reviews:
Sketchy, and often inaccurate, but cheap!.......2007-03-21
Unfortunately with books of this type, they tend to try to bite off a lot more than they can convenient chew! While there are certainly a number of ships of different time periods presented, it can hardly be called anything like a full compendium. Whole classes of ships are missing, including a number of significant Russian, American, German, French and British classes of battleships, armored cruisers, cruisers, etc. This book is particularly bad for the time period 1860-1914, with very little information presented (half of Admiral Togo's battlefleet is missing, let alone the Russians of the time, and virtually NONE of the many American pre-WWI armored cruisers are discussed at all). Even WW2 is missing a number of different heavy cruiser classes, both Japanese and American with no explanation. Finally, many comments are made about different ship types with very little basis of support, and would be better not mentioned at all. All that said, for eleven bucks, it is a handy little guide.
Fantastic book for the size and price.......2006-01-23
Fantastic directory! I have many naval books (about 200) and this is the first one that covers 141 years and I can take with me where ever I go! Imagine doing this with Conway's All the Worlds Fighting Ships (this is a 4 book series covering the same period, and big books at that). It doesn't cover every ship of the period but for its size and price its superb! As for the missing classes Mr. Corwin notes, I agree but its O.K., except for one, the Talwar class entered service in 2003, the book was published in 2001. In mine oppinion there is only one serious mistake: the Hydra class where battleships not cruisers, I know I am Greek!
Too broad a subject for such a short space, but overall ok guide........2005-10-17
Author David Miller offers another Zagat-sized warship compilation guide, Warships of the World: 1860 to the Present Day offers an inexpensive, reference guide to the naval vessels of the last 145 years. Though chock full of various ships, the scope of the subject is too much for such a format, and what you get is limited information and pictures for the various ships. This is not a guide for the expert, but makes for a fun read and handy reference for the layman.
The book is broken down by ship type: Aircraft Carrier, Battleship, Battle Cruiser, Cruiser, Destroyer, and Escorts. Each category is broken down by country. The book is 479 pages in length and covers well over 100 classes of ships. Technical specs are offered for each class, as well as photographs and artist renderings(only on some).
Some problems I have with this book. There is no clear tab or title page for each countries' entries in that category. There are several classes of ships which have been placed in categories either inappropriate or highly debatable, most notably the French Dunkerque as a battle cruiser (in my opinion belonging in the battleship class), the Sovremmenny and Udaloy destroyers listed in the cruiser class, and the Krivak and Oliver Hazard Perry classes listed as escorts rather than frigates(the author uses escorts as a catch all class for FF, FFG, FFL, and Patrol craft). Also there is a horrendous lack of material on Chinese(Jiangwei and Jianhu class)and Indian naval ships, and no entries for the modern Russian designs like Nuestrashimmy or Talwar(Krivak III mod) Class FFGs.
Most naval buffs will find errors and have some disagreement over Miller's classifications, but for the most part, this is not designed to be the work of an expert. Miller has published similar guides on submarines, tanks, guns, and weapons, so I feel that his expertise is in compiling information rather than on a specific category.
Buy this one used and save a few bucks.
Book Description
This book offers a concise survey of Dutch history in the period of the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
Book Description
Maarten Prak charts the political, social, economic and cultural history of the Golden Age through chapters that range from the introduction of the tulip to the experience of immigrants and Jews in Dutch society, the paintings of Vermeer and Rembrandt, and the ideas of Spinoza. He sets the Dutch experience within a European context and examines the extent to which the Golden Age was a product of its own past or the harbinger of the more modern, industrialized and enlightened society of the future. This accessible study will prove invaluable reading to anyone interested in Dutch history.
Customer Reviews:
An Informative Introduction.......2006-06-10
In The Dutch Republic in the Seventeenth Century, Maarten Prak explores the Golden Age of the Dutch Republic. He tries to discern why it was a golden age and why it collapsed. Prak also raises the issue of this golden age's tie to Modernity. The book is a broad synthesis of the secondary literature on this period of Dutch history, and Prak investigates numerous aspects of Dutch history including politics, art, and religion. Prak's goal is not to be exhaustive; rather he wants his book to emphasize "the way society functioned" (6).
Prak locates the strength of the Dutch Republic in its political system, an institution that he claims most other historians view as the weakest aspect of the Republic. The Republic's political system does not reflect modern institutions; it did not have the level of centralization or bureaucracy that many other countries were moving towards. Instead, the Dutch Republic allowed for a more decentralized form of government, giving provincial administers more authority. Prak views this system as a balance between necessity and cooperation. This freedom to operate was possible because of the relatively short distances involved. Prak notes that even though the government was decentralized, citizens still had great confidence in it because they continued to invest in its bonds even though these bonds had the lowest interest rates in Europe. The fact that the business minded Dutch continued to invest in their government proves that this government was not as weak as historians have supposed it to be. It was not weak, it was simply different from the modern.
Prak also portrays the Dutch as a very practical people. Pragmatism played a key role in many of the decisions facing the republic. Most interesting, Prak claims that the Dutch were not tolerant by principle, but that it was practical. This view of the Dutch seems at odds with some of the other literature, but it is persuasive. The problems facing the Dutch from competing religious groups were solved on the spot in a way that was practical. Prak's discussion on the issues concerning marriage being both a state and a church institution seemed representative. Thus, Prak's Dutch are less noble than the tolerant Dutch of other historians; rather they merely dislike trouble. Of course this pragmatism was not an across the board phenomenon. Religious leaders put pursuit of truth before pragmatism in the Remonstrant's controversy, but the political leaders seemed to shoot for diffusing the situation through pragmatic gestures.
Prak's book is helpful for the student of Dutch history. His goal is to address the Dutch of the seventeenth century on their own terms, not trying to draw analogies or precursors to Modernity. He focuses on the distinctives of the Dutch Republic, giving his reader a sense for how such a small country managed to accomplish so much in such a short period of time.

Book Description
Dutch Reformed pastor Balthasar Bekker (1634-1698) has long been recognized as a key figure in the end of the witchcraft persecutions in early modern Europe. With the publication of his monumental four-volume work
The World Bewitched Bekker argued against the temporal activity of the devil and evil spirits as well as against the reality of witchcraft, sorcery, and spirit possession. Yet Bekker's ideas drew opposition from Dutch Reformed clergymen who charged that his use of Cartesian philosophy to reject the temporal activity of spirits threatened much of traditional religious faith.
This book argues that it wa Bekker's exegesis of biblical passages in which spirits and spirit activity were mentioned that was a far greater threat than his Cartesian metaphysics to the literal interpretation of the Bible which was the intellectual cornerstone of Dutch reformed confessionalism, dominant in the church since the Synod of Dordrecht (1618-1619). With an examination of the ideas of Bekker, his opponents and supporters, this book places the controversy around
The World Bewitched within the context of the Cartesian debates of the seventeenth century and the growth of confessionalism within the Dutch Reformed church.

Book Description
This is a study of the politics of the pivotal province of Holland and of its role in the political system of the Dutch Republic as a whole in the seventeenth century. It is an original, scholarly, and challenging analysis, which treats the reality of politics from the ground up. J.L. Price explores the politics of the towns of Holland in detail, examines the province's political system, and assesses the ways in which Holland influenced the policies of the Dutch Republic in its Golden Age. Dr Price's novel approach to a complex and important subject sets politics in its economic and social context, and offers valuable insights into the practical politics of the Dutch during the period when they played a major role on the world stage.
Product Description
During the seventeenth century Dutch influence on the Baltic region, both economic and aesthetic, was unrivaled. In the wake of the Dutch monopoly on Baltic trade, cultural contacts between the Dutch Republic and the Baltic world flourished. The Dutch Republic was even to fulfil an exemplary function in the Baltic world (particularly in the Swedish Empire, the dominating power in the region), not solely limited to the commerce of commodities but extending to the domain of architecture and art as well.
In this intensive cultural traffic, an important role was set aside for Dutch immigrants, architects, artists, and their agents. Apart from their regular activities as diplomats or news correspondents, agents mediated in cultural affairs for patrons in the North. As such, they occupied a key role in the relations between the Baltic world and the Dutch Republic. The pivotal element in these networks, they negotiated between Baltic commissioners and Dutch architects, artists, and suppliers of luxury items, including sculptures, tapestries, paintings, as well as a wide range of books and prints - all of which were available on the Amsterdam market. These extensive networks mark the Dutch Republic as a major centre of architecture, art, and information, crucial to the cultural development of northern Europe.
The history of this lively trade in good taste is told on the basis of rich archival material, including drawings, book and art collection inventories, correspondence, travel journals, and diaries.

Customer Reviews:
I'm Christian, but this was over the top.......2004-12-02
I liked the focus on healthy food in this book. Unlike other reviewers, I am thinking about buying a grain mill. It also referenced a few books that look interesting.
What I didn't like, were all of the Biblical references. I'm Christian, but the Bible quotes were excessive. They quickly became distracting. She puts down "relying on self and inner strength" and supports doing things for God. I'm into simple living for a variety of reasons, including Christian values, but that is different than the extreme taken in this book.
I much preferred The Simple Living Guide by Janet Luhrs. She gives depth to the topic that is missing Jackie Wellwood's book.
Thinly disguised advertisement.......2004-04-20
Despite her claim of seeking to go beyond commercialism into a richer, fuller family life, Jackie Wellwood includes a variety of advertisements into her text. Two of these advertisements are for her own company, a fact she does not disclose. The final words of the main text would allow an astute and alert reader to pick up the reference, however she should have still made the connection clear. This lapse is so distasteful that it renders the rest of her work suspect - the reader always wonders if Wellwood is making a recommendation based on its quality or that the enterprise is owned by a friend.
A great source for busy moms.......who want to simplify.......2000-07-07
Jackie's advice and ideas have been a daily dose of discipline for me as a wife and home schooling mother of three......the organizing and simplifying ideas are things that I've not found elsewhere and I feel her book was written just for me. On the days that I have felt overwhelmed it was nice to reread pages and get myself back on track.....I am of course still learning but I feel that Jackie has put me on just the right course with every chapter in this book......Well worth the cost of this book and quite frankly worth much more!
Incredibly Helpful!.......1999-08-17
If you are serious about simplifing your life, you must read this book. This book was a real life changer for my family and myself. Thank you Jackie!
THE BOOK FOR SIMPLE, NATURAL LIVING!!!!!.......1999-04-20
The Busy Mom's Guide to Simple Living is the book to read on living simply and naturally!!! Jackie Wellwood comes up with practical and creative ideas to change your life. She also reminds us that simple does not mean easy, and with time changing our lifestyles will become easier. She offers us healthier ideas for ourselves and our families. While the ideas are a bit challenging, she tells us to take it in steps and make it a slow lifestyle change process. I hope you all get out of it what I did!!!

Basic Truths & Classic Values.......2007-01-16
This is a wonderful quick read from a woman who found the things that truly matter and really work in life.
Knowing the difference between needing and wanting she had the good sense to turn down paid shopping trip because she already had the groceries that she needed. That was just one of the ways that showed Oseola McCartny had learned that more was not always better.
This book shows how to live a life with value and joy by seeing the true nature of the work we do and that in saving money and living life it's not how much you are given, its what you do with what you got.
The reason that this book is such a quick and easy read is that it just makes so much sense; it is just so agreeable. Planning for the future and using compound interest to work for you and not against you, for example.
As a crowning touch, Dr. Oseola shares with others the gift of formal education that was denied her. That her whole life has brought her to the point of being able to make such an astounding large sacrifice for scholarships is proof beyond doubt that she has learned much about the true values of life and can teach us much that we should take to our hearts.
This book is yet another generous gift from her to us and I thank her sincerely for that.
A Refreshing Reminder.......2007-01-13
In this age of conspicuous and overpriced consumption, Simple Wisdom for Rich Living offers a refreshing reminder that there may be more to life than what advertisers or the Joneses would have us believe. It's worth noting that Miss McCarty never had to pay rent and she never had children to pay for, but still, we could all learn from her experiences and observations. This quick read came recommended by Houston Financial Consultant Laury Adams, and I'm glad I followed up on her advice to read it.
This is a wonderful book for all people to read........1999-08-26
Simple Wisdom for Rich Living is an outstanding tribute to Miss Oseola McCarty. I am from Hattiesburg, Mississippi and remember this fantastic lady. I always knew that there was more to her life than washing and ironing. This book is a wonderful guide to rich living. I recommend it to everyone. Her book offers instructions to all of us to work hard, persist, persevere, and not faint in the days of adversity.
Inspiring.......1999-03-30
This small book provides a glimpse of a close-knit family, and deeply spiritual, simple living woman who made a big impact by saving her money as a private laundry/ironing worker in the deep south. Through saving, she was able to donate $150,000 to the University of Mississippi for scholarships. Aged black and white family snapshots enhance the text. As a spiritual inspiration, this first-person, real-life, no-nonsense account of living a Godly life is much more inspiring than all the esoteric reads flooding the market today.

"big-picture" guide.......2004-09-29
more an inspirational guide rather than a how-to financial book
see Michael Phillips "Seven Laws of Money" reviews if you want to get an idea of what to expect
thin book, worth the $6; however, if you want more depth, consider "Get a Life: You Don't Need a Million to Retire Well, Fourth Edition" by Ralph E. Warner
Disappointed.......2000-05-10
I had hoped for useful tips on financial investing. Those who choose voluntary simplicity as a lifestyle do not always want to invest their savings in NASDAQ, so alternative, secure investments are very desirable, particularly for those who hope to one day live off their investment income.
I was very disappointed to discover that "Simple Living Investments" is essentially a booklet about the standard ideas of old age. I found little substance to this book. Chapter four shares a tip that "the importance of friendship to a satisfying and meaningful life is greatly underestimated..." I regret that I paid $ for this "wealth" of information.
Creative, realistic, different way of thinking about money.......1998-04-30
I loved this book. I came prepared to think about things like money funds, bonds, paying off my mortgage and ended thinking about flexibility and friends. It takes thinking about old age, retirement and money and turns things on their heads in a very sensible way. I laughed aloud and then agreed with his conclusions about what makes a happy and successful old age. I recomend it for my class on waste reduction. I loved the investment charts.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent- valuable tool to prepare for the Y2K.......1999-09-18
It's difficult to determine what will actually take place Dec.31/99 through Jan1/2000. As we in Canada have learned from the '98 - Montreal Ice Storms , and as have others down the east coast of the USA have learned with the Hurricans: it is better and wiser to be prepared for something than be trapped with nothing. Having had a grocery store for 35 years in our family - we know that the stores only have supplies for 3 days. Therefore - stock up as Ned says on things which you can use even if nothing happens. Be prepared and eat healthy.Excellent resourse to prepare for any looming disaster or - a resourseful tool to eat right. Enjoyed the read!!! Good wisdom Ned Vankevich!
Excellent internet reference guide for y2k preparedness........1999-09-08
Having studied eight works on y2k preparedness, I have found Professor Vankevich's work to be the best internet guide for emergency prearations. Approaching all aspects the potental problem from the natural health and alternative technology perspectives, Y2K Made Simple will be a valuable resource in the coming new age.
Great book for practical ideas.......1999-07-31
I liked this book a lot. Ned Vankecich takes spends more time coming up with practical solutions for everyday folk instead of focusing in on the original and explanation of the problem. This is not a "doom-and-gloom" book. It is written with enough "bright-side" to keep me confident that we can get through the first few months of the millennium. Some of Ned's ideas are a little odd, like keeping a body bag in your house in the event that an elderly loved-one dies. However, as Ned reiterates over and over, "what if..?"
