Book Description
The M4 Sherman tank was the mainstay of the Western allies between 1942 and 1945. Fast and modern it was better than most of the tanks Britain had to offer. The American Chief of Staff claimed in November 1943 that it had been hailed widely as ‘the best tank on the battlefield today’. However, by the time of the Normandy invasion of June 1944 this was not the case. The new heavy tanks being produced by the Germans were able to outclass the Sherman in both armour and armament. This title describes the development and operational use of the Sherman medium tank throughout World War II and beyond.

Too Short, Format Not so Good.......2005-02-16
Although I have invested quite a pot of money into Osprey publications, some of the series are better than others... one problem is if the subject matter is so long that it cannot be handled by the short page format.
This is definitely the case in this book: since the Sherman tank became the unfortunate defacto starndard for the western allies in WWII, it can potentially encorporate a lot of space and detail. Zaloga covers the advent of the tank and how it was put through it production paces. I also learned why the production run of the Lee-Grant tanks was so short --- it was an interim version between the Stuart and the Sherman -- the turret for a gun larger than the 37 mm had not been made, so the hybrid was the only way to get large amount of up-gunned tanks into the field (even if they did look wierd).
There is a lot of detail on the many versions but I did find a few things that annoyed me:
1) There is no detail on the "why" of the choice of the Sherman. Surely a tank as critically flawed and used as long as it is either being defended by misdirected intentions, or it really has some solid points.
2) Although British and commonwealth forces were using this tank in some of the largest engagements on the western front, there is little on the variations used by these forces. There is in addition no mention of any variations that may have been shipped to Burma.
3) As carrolary of the above there is nothing on the Firefly version with the 17 lber version of its gun. Certainly arguably the most worthwhile upgrade done on this tank.
4) No mention of the impact of model development and the impact on the field. The 17 pounder on the Firefly meant that the British and Canadians could match the Panzer IV and also, in score hits on the Panther and Tiger (though still outgunned).
A good reference but I think that there was just too much info and the Osprey format was just too short.

Book Description
In this book you will discover a history of humanity unlike anything you have ever heard of. Ever wonder what happened to all of the civilizations that have gone before us? Well, the events in history are continually repeated by different cultures throughout time with the same finale, affecting the entire globe in a relatively short time. From the ancient writings of all of the historians, religious scriptures and mythology, we also find the same understanding. And their writings unveil the true nature of the forces behind the events. Yet, we are not taught about these things in schools, universities or the media. The various types of natural disasters, terrorism and war always end up producing the same result. In fact, humans and Nature are so much a part of each other that we literally take turns in accomplishing the same objective, as part of an overall process involving a living Earth.
Our ancestors were not ignorant people, but were, in many cases, very capable and intelligent. They were also celestial observers and knew astronomy so well that they have even taught us things we did not know today. They also built structures that were used as astronomical observatories. Much of this was done in an attempt to fully understand what was taking place, for there were dramatic celestial events as well.
Natural disasters have been undergoing a steady climb, as things become more and more unstable – a process that has happened many times before. These and other observations indicate that we are about to undergo a major global transformation. Notwithstanding, we can stop many natural disasters, terrorism and war by understanding what took place.
"In Defense of Nature – The History Nobody Told You About" unveils a story of the human interaction with our living Earth and living Cosmos. To say that you will be truly surprised by what has been hidden from our historical perspectives is surely an understatement. Know what coming Earth changes are about to occur and why.

What I've Been Waiting and Hoping For -- Bonanza!.......2003-05-27
This work is history at its finest! I've always loved to read about history, but this book is much more than just another book, it is "the living monument to life," surely to escalate to the greatest accomplishment for humanity of this century. I was extremely surprised, delighted, and astounded. As a previous librarian, and research scientist, I've never read a book so deep in understanding, so interesting, and so complete. In Defense of Nature-The History Nobody Told You About is authoritatively written by a historian with knowledge of the interdisciplinary sciences. How refreshing! This "book of books" provides tremendous insight that other works attempting to understand world and human history have failed to provide. What really touch me, I mean, really enlightened me, was to learn of the Ultimate Lesson of Humanity. I was inspired, to say the very least, when Pasichnyk concludes with an observation at the end of this masterpiece, in reference to civilization: "Nature, hostile to all waste, tirelessly reabsorbs the smallest remnants of anything which once lived and uses them again to produce more life." What caused me to shiver was the evidence he presents which substantiates the next historical period for the cycles of life-renewal. We all know what that means: overwhelming, historical evidence that IT's coming up soon-the Big One! Yet, this masterpiece concludes on a positive note, and brings hope to humanity. Pasichnyk boldly ushers forth the ultimate condition that brings world peace-an end to construction of buildings and bombs, the destruction of wilderness, and turning the weapons of war into plowshares and pruning hooks to establish wilderness. This is our most selfish and self-preserving act, this is in humanity's best interest to do. Also, this is altruistic, and this is most loving, and it will be humanity's greatest triumph over global degradation. The book really makes sense, of everything! Count me in!
A truly astounding read.......2003-02-21
This book is a total surprise... and a good one at that! If a history as interesting as this were taught in school, I would have done much better in my history classes. It amazes me just how much has been left out of our "accepted" history. There are global "catastrophes" that bring civlizations around the globe to an end in a very short time. Or as the book describes, times of life's renewal. One surprise -- there are many -- is that historical writings, religious writings and mythology all discuss these periods, but somehow they aren't discussed in schools and even universities. Another surpise is that natural disasters, terrorism and war have been undergoing a steady climb from the late 1700s to the present -- a sort of climax is occuring. Even more surprising is that when natural disasters go up, war and terrorism go down, and vice versa -- we and Nature take turns in acomplsihing the same objective. I wouldn't want to ruin it for you as to why, but you should read it. The most important thing is that this book is very timely, and it explains why the world is the way it is today. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Customer Reviews:
Yes, get it for Optometry!.......2007-10-07
This is an excellent review of most ocular diseases. It is NOT too much for Optometry. Those kind of reviews are what allows other health care professionals to belittle our profession. We must know and treat all ocular diseases as Optometric physicians and this book provides great information and pictures. Of course, more pictures are always better and Yanoff and Duker have only chosen to display pictures of typical presentations of conditions. However, this book provides a good basis of important information.
Don't get it for Optometry.......2007-02-19
This book is way too much. We were required to get it for Disease class and I regret it! This book has entirely too much information and goes into too much detail. It's very hard to carry around anywhere or even to use in the office. They should have put it in 2 volumes and had it divided into surgery and disease processes or something. Bottom line, too much information for most people.
Excellent Resource.......2007-01-29
As an ophthlamology resident, I find that this is the most comprehensive textbook available in the field. While in my first year I was satisfied using the BSCS and Kanski as my primary references, I now find that I am turning more frequently to Yanoff and Duker as my primary source of information for grand rounds, OKAP studying, and Board review. While the text is large, it is highly accurate and full of high quality illustrations and figures. This translates to less time spent cross-referencing information, and more time absorbing the well-written text and learning the information. This text is an essential volume.
I like this book, but tend to use another more often........2006-04-28
I'm one who likes medical texts, and I actually try to read most of what I buy. This is a excellent text. I think the organization is good, but that there is definitely room for improvement. The pictures are good, and the text is excellent, but could be slightly more concise. For these reasons, in addition to the very large size of the book, whenever there is something I need to look up, I generally reach for the Kanski textbook first as I find the pictures are just as good, the text slightly more concise but just as informative, and it is definitely easier on my back. I would recommend this book, but would look at Kanski too before you make your decision.
Very good textbook.......2005-08-22
This heavyweight 2004 book is standard, savvy, securely state-of-the-art. You buy 8 kg worth of one volume, color coded and all. The only drawback is the fact that some illustrations are redrawn for "clarity" and lose information. There is a slight bias towards refractive surgery, but isn't this is the current _Zeitgeist_ in the field?
Overall, here is a well written scientific text. You will find it useful if you want to walk around the immensely rich and incredibly refined knowledgeable field of modern ophthalmology by reading a single volume.

Customer Reviews:
THE text for Optometrists to understand Glaucoma.......2001-12-12
This is a great book for optometry students, and optometrists alike! If you've got any questions about the peculiar disease of glaucoma, read this book. Not only does it explain diagnosis of the many forms of the disease, but has an in depth section that explains pharmacological management as well as surgical management. The discussions are fairly up to date, and easy to follow. The text does a good job at integrating as much new information and research as possible. There are some editing errors, but hey we're not all perfect!

Book Description
It is a well-known phenomenon that all deaf people depend heavily on their vision as a chief compensatory factor when communicating with other people. Some become very proficient with speechreading, while most depend greatly on body language and some form of manual communication. It is therefore an interesting fact that, historically, clinicians and researchers have given very limited attention to the visual acuity of their deaf subjects. The essence of this book should lead future clinicians and researchers to reverse that trend and give appropriate attention to the eyes of their subjects as well as to their ears. The primary purpose of this text is to make resource materials on visual assessment and follow-up processes more readily available to all professionals preparing to work with the deaf. Among other components, this book contains chapters on anatomy and physiology of the visual mechanism; assessment procedures and recommended test instruments and equipment; common and less common visual and ocular anomalies often found among deaf students; methods for altering the educational environment to make academic success more likely; a glossary of vision, eye-related, and other terminology used within the text; and a list of acronyms and abbreviations in common use among physicians and researchers dealing with vision and/or deafness. Everything in this book is original, including the high quality color anatomical figures that illustrate a color adaptation technique demonstrated in the chapter on color deficient vision. This outstanding book serves as a "stand-alone" undergraduate or graduate postsecondary level course text, as well as a supplement to other courses dealing with deafness. The book will also be of great interest to students in deaf education, audiology, speech language pathology, social work, and other allied health career areas such as optometry and ophthalmology.

Book Description
The diverse roles in physiological function now attributed to nitric oxide include those it performs in the eye. In recent years this simple molecule has become the subject of increased attention among researchers and practitioners concerned with the eye. While most books in the field have concentrated on the pharmacology of NO in the central and peripheral nervous system or the cardiovascular system, the contents of this volume encompass all aspects of the eye and NO. With authors who are leading scientists worldwide, the major sections include reports of the latest research in the mechanism of ocular hypertension and glaucoma (aqueous dynamics), ocular autonomic neurotransmission (ocular bloodflow), and the pathophysiology of uveitis; the final section contains three chapters on the role of NO specific to the retina. This book is a valuable resource for researchers as well as for ophthalmologists and other practitioners interested in the role of NO in the eye.

Customer Reviews:
Not for the beginner.......2005-05-22
This is a great book to accompany the regular textbook of the optomotrist or the ophthalmologist in training. Very concise and yet comprehensive. This is an indispensable tool.
Ocular Anatomy and Physiology.......2000-03-16
This book is written by several different authors. The quality of writing varies greatly. This is a short book that seems to be written to impress the reader with how smart the authors are. The problem is that anybody who would understand this book as written wouldn't need a quick book on eye anatomy. The first chapter is especially confusing for the novice.
