Book Description

Special forces units around the world have played a critical, though often secretive, role since war was declared on global terrorism following the September 11 attacks on the United States.

Now, through compelling narrative and explosive photos, "Shadow Wars" reveals how these units are leading the fight.

From the rugged mountains of Afghanistan to the vast deserts of Iraq, "Shadow Wars" details operations by U.S. Army Green Berets and Delta Force, U.S. Navy SEALs, Air Force and CIA special operations troops, along with Australia's Special Air Service, the British SAS and SBS, Poland's GROM, and Canada's JTF2. Also recounted is the highly-controversial raid by Russia's Alpha Group to rescue hostages held by Chechen terrorists in Moscow in the fall of 2002.

For the first time, "Shadow Wars" brings together more than 80 photos of special forces in action in the war against terrorism, some never before made public.

Author David Pugliese uncovered the inner workings of the Canadian military's Joint Task Force Two, and once again offers a must-read for anyone interested in learning more about the world of covert warfare.

4 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2005-10-26

This book is a good read. It does an excellent job of comparing SOFs from several countries, particularly the U.S., Canada, and Australia, including discussing differences in their equipment and operating philosophies. It told me several things about SOF operations in Afghanistan and Iraq that I had not read about elsewhere, and did a better job of describing a couple I knew about than I have read elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Concise and timely- Your Situation Report on Special Ops........2004-10-09

David Pugliese gives you the P.D.B. (Presidential Daily Briefing) digest of Special Operations in the recent campaign aginst terror. While the closing chapters are peppered with his political commentary on America's incursion into Iraq, his reporting on operations conducted by the elite forces of the world is a nice, tiddy historical record. The photos are interesting and it is an entertaining read for the history, military and special operations enthusiast. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it- a fine addition to your military library.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2004-06-07

As an overview of foreign forces, not bad. So far, I have yet to read a better written and narrated book than Erick Haney's Delta Force and Warrior Soul by Chuck Pfarrer.

4 out of 5 stars Cool Book on Special Forces JTF2 Delta Force SAS et al.......2004-06-04

Lots of information on SOF units in Iraq and Afghanistan, this book reads well and is jammed with pretty interesting photos. It includes almost 100 images including never before seen photos of Canada's Joint Task Force 2 (JTF2) in Afghanistan (which for me as a Canadian was worth the price of the book). Also included are pics of JTF2 Hummers and mountain operations, descriptions of their operations as well as Navy SEALs, Grom and a large chapter on the Aussie SAS (who come across really well as no-nonsense professionals.) There is also a good blow by blow account of the Moscow raid against Chechen terrorists in 2002. Up to date and worth the price.

Book Description

For more than half a century, Special Forces and CIA legend Billy Waugh dedicated his life to tracking down and eliminating America's most virulent enemies. Operating from the darkest shadows and most desolate corners of the world, he made his mark in many of the most important operations in the annals of U.S. Spec Ops.

He spent seven and a half years behind enemy lines in Vietnam as a member of a covert group of elite commandos. He trailed Osama Bin Laden in Khartoum in the early '90s, and would have killed the terrorist kingpin if his superiors had allowed it. And at the age of seventy-two, he marched through the frozen high plains of Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Hunting the Jackal is the astonishing true account of the singular career of a courageous soldier in his nation's shadow wars -- including his pivotal role in the previously untold story of the capture of the most infamous and elusive assassin in history, Carlos the Jackal.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-04-10

Great book....easy to read. Lacks substantial and detailed operational insight probably due to confidentiality. Overall a great book by a great American.

4 out of 5 stars A look behind the scenes........2007-03-19

Billy Waugh is a rare kind of man. His book gives us a look behind the scenes of Special Ops and clandestine operatives.

5 out of 5 stars Tracking the Jackal and More - GREAT READ .......2007-01-27

Imagine that your Walter Mitty dream has come true and you are a star wide receiver playing in the 2007 Superbowl. You run to the huddle only to find a gray haired Joe Namath calling the signals and leading the team on a scoring drive. A dream, but for small teams of young Special Forces soldiers leading the anti-Taliban forces in southern Afghanistan is was very real. A soldier and operator who was a legend in their father's and grandfather's days is there in the middle of the fight.

Waugh, at age 72 is the middle of early days of the fight in Afghanistan, fighting not only the Taliban, but bone chilling cold in the thin air while hauling his share of gear. More than 50 years older than the young fellow soldiers, Waugh was a living, fighting legend. Few understand the impact made by mixed teams of Seals, Delta, Rangers, Air Force and CIA operators on the overthrow of the Taliban.

Understand that the literary review of this book was written by one of the testosterone deficient, panties all in a wad folks whose concept of self sacrifice is only cheating a little on their taxes. They are simply unable to comprehend two foundational truths, that they can write what they want, worship their own god, and speak their mind is created by people like Waugh and protecting their freedoms is a dirty, thankless task.

Do not expect to find the polished writing or the introspection of One Bullet Away, rather this is a story of doing, stripped of almost all emotion. Some of the reviewers questioned if the truth had been stretched. Most likely the bridging details were snipped by the CIA censors, in our interest. A google or amazon search for Billy Waugh normally points to many references to him, usually prefaced by "the legendary Billy Waugh."

Before Afghanistan there were years of fighting terrorism in the hellholes of the world. Waugh was tracking Osama almost a decade before 9-11. Later he was with the team that finally picked up the trail that lead back through a number of steps to legendary terrorist Carlos the Jackal.

Perhaps half of the book covers this lengthy search and then observation. Waugh captured the many months of frustrating waiting for the politicians in Washington to make decisions, especially when any hint that he was being tracked would have sent the Jackal on the run again to the safety of Iran or Iraq. That he was captured is a tribute to the CIA in both their ability to find Carlos and to keep the surveillance operation hidden and secret for months while the politicians fiddled, looking for a low risk way to get rid of Carlos.

In a very modest way Waugh also tells of getting leave from Walter Reed Hospital, where he was receiving care for very serious wounds, only to fly to Vietnam while on leave and ask to be sent back to the field. Despite the fact that he was still limping badly he was allowed to remain after badgering many in the chain of command.

The book has the feel the there was a lot more that was deleted during the CIA's review of the book. In some cases the deletion of information on methodology and technology leaves holes.

One wonders where do men Waugh come from, willing to devote 50 years to the service of their country, mostly in violence torn countries looking for bad guys and protecting the good guys.

My hope is that he will receive enough cooperation from the CIA to put together a few more great books.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2006-11-07

72 years old in Afghanistan! I thought I was getting a bit old at 45 for Security work. Billy Waugh is one of America's quiet professionals. (This Reviewer is Australian.)I really liked the way the man could do his job and serve his country without disparaging people from other countries. The relationships he develops with indigenous personnel are testament to this. Far too many books by American authors do so much flag waving it gets up your nose a bit.I really enjoyed the bits in Khartoum. I just returned from there and lived in the same neighbourhood where Turabi, Osama and Carlos lived. I saw Turabi's house. The bit about driving at night was spot on. To the reviewer who said it wasn't possible to jog around Khartoum at night as a Westerner....1. Billy was under diplomatic cover. 2. In Khartoum there is next to no street crime. It is safe to walk around there any time day or night. Sharia law is good for one thing. I did it all the time. I even rode the local bus. It was safer than riding around with a target for Al Queda marked on your vehicle (ie. the logo of a well known Humanitarian Organisation.) I reckon AQ is unlikely to target the local bus when there were so many UN vehicles available.

Billy's book has been a real motivator for me to get really fit again.

3 out of 5 stars very good but some part hard to believe.......2006-09-18

Billy Waugh is a great soldier. The only section of this book I would question is his description of the mission in Khartoum to hunt Carlos the Jackal. It's hard to believe a Caucasian man like Billy was able to jog unmolested, repeatedly in the open in such a small city like Khartoum. It's a place where only journalists, arms dealers, terrorists, and government employees mingle. Billy never described what his cover was. The Sudanese government knows EVERYONE who arrives and lives in Khartoum.
He should have at least been arrested!

5 out of 5 stars Who cares what these jerks say.......2006-07-16

Well first off, I am not in the military or even care to be in the military. Now that's out of the way, I can state what I think of this book without sounding like these jerke writing these reviews saying how inaccurate this book might be. First off, Special forces are not something that the public is going to have full knowledge of, or even what they do. Yeah maybe some of the pics are inaccurate on some form ,but all the same it's just giving an example rather than actually having the actual soldier right there in the studio. These guys writing reviews are nothing more than mall ninjas who only fantasize about being the real deal, while they aren't doing anything with their life(especially not writing books) and talking lies about what "special op"they have been on, and how they can tell you , but then they will have to kill you after.
And as far as this one reviewer saying that the pics did not have their face blurred out, and how the enemy now knows who they might be. Give me a break you jerk! Yeah I'm sure all the terrorists are heading to their local Borders or Barne and Nobles in their third world country, with their hard earned money, an also comparing the photos next to the book saying'Yeah ,that's the guy, Let's kill him. Get a life. I don't even care if you might have served, get a life anyways. You weren't in any special forces , you're probably in the reserves, and dreaming of being in something better.
Other than that, the book is pretty cool,I think. It shows real pics(that of course can't be inaccurate) and models that show a run down of how the soldiers and others dressed. Some facts, that of course you might have to take with a grain of salt.
I think it's the best book out there for the people who want more of a visual ,rather than imagining it in their heads. Good book.

3 out of 5 stars A slightly flawed, yet intersting book........2006-07-15

First off, I have to point out the flaws:
1. The CIA "Jawbreaker" team that went into Afghanistan was mostly armed with AKs and Browning High-power pistols, NOT state-of-the-art M-4 and M-16 variants. They bought their gear and equipment mostly from REI, not a military clothing sale store. I found the segments and desrciptions of the CIA equipment to be laughable, and several books, such as "First In" discuss this.
2. The translations are lacking. That being said, they sure did a better job that I ever could!
3. The reconstructions were good, but you could clearly see that a lot of the equipment shown was just what they could get their hands on (early M-4s, M-249s used with M-16 mags that jam in real life, stuff like that), not what was really used. I found it odd that the news photos they used didn't even match them!
Okay, now that THIS is out of the way, all in all, it's still a darned good book. Sure, there are some errors, but when you're dealing with Special Ops, it shocks me they got as much right as they did, pure and simple.
Yes, it's mostly for the modelers, airsofter crowd or "gear collector" types. So what? The bottom line is that it's still a great book with a lot of info you just don't see anywhere else. And it's great that the units of our allied nations FINALLY got their due. I can't comment on the authenticity of these sections, but I know their efforts are rarely ever written about.
The next time you hear someone say, "Gee, we were in places OTHER than Iraq?" shove this book under their noses!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Military Read.......2004-06-19

I recently purchased this book, and after reading the several reviews you see before you, I've come to several conclusions. One being that the book has been translated wonderfully. You have to understand that languages cannot be exactly translated. Two is the one picture showing U.S. Special Forces and SAS is not a mistake, if you read carefully, you'll notice two individuals kneeling and another in a prone position. Those two are SAS in 'civvies' (undercover) assisting the American operators.
The book provides excellent photographs for all of those who want a superb display of the tactical gear worn by the various Coalition Forces operating in Afghanistan. I viewed the website and only a scarce few are shown in the book.
All in all this is a great selection if you're looking for a book with magnificent crisk color photographs of the soldiers and their military gear!

4 out of 5 stars Not for the specialists.......2003-12-24

A coffee-table book packed with pictures. If you are looking for highly specialized infos, give it a miss. If you want loads of pictures (including reconstructions) and some background infos, go for it.

The original text was obviously in French and the translation is not always 100% but it remains readable.

Good infos on non-US units and interesting pictures taken by the in-house "RAIDS" reporter, Yves Debay.

1 out of 5 stars Poor translation and innacurate details.......2003-12-22

1. The book appears to have been tranlated from French to English very poorly. I estimate 80% of the sentences have obvious grammatical errors and/or mispellings.
2. Many of the detailed facts specifically in the timeline section are innacurate.
3. I intended to use the book for research on Spec Ops role for an Afghanistan Campaign analysis. I didn't use anything from this book because it lacked factual credibility.

Book Description

As everyone realizes all too well after September 11th, even a small band of fanatics can bring tragedy to an entire nation. Whether it involves kidnapping, hijacking, bombing, or other threats, civilized countries respond the same way: with Special Forces. Find out how these elite soldiers are organized, armed, trained, and deployed, as well as their weapons and intelligence methods. Their spectacular, sometimes very covert, operations make for fascinating reading, with controversial incidents examined in detail.

"This book chronicles modern-era terrorist activities from the 1960s through the 1990s and the government responses to hostage crises and attempts to apprehend various terrorists."--Army. "The main hypothetical argument for a U.S. missile shield's deployment is terrorism. As one of the most thorough overviews of conventional counterterrorism techniques and engagements, this book may draw those trying to think through their positions..."--Publishers Weekly.

4 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2002-06-14

My only complaint about this book is it should have been written as a series of 3 or 4 books. There's is a ton of info in the book, though sometimes it gets a bit overwhelming (especially in the first few chapters).

Lots of information that I never knew, even though this is a subject I love to read up on. The author is able to keep all the info interesting and exciting to read. Lost a lot of sleep by staying up too lake on worknights reading this darned book. :)

A great read for those just getting into terrorism / counterterrorism research, or for the old pros.

To dive right into it: this is a must-have space filling object in the already-read-and-want-to-read-again-department of your bookcase when you're the slightest bit interested in counterterrorism. This book provides a excellent overview of 30 years of terrorism and counterterrorism, worldwide. Although in my opinion too concise in certain points, and the chapters 1 to 3 are 'guilty' of this because of their dry summary of (practically) every terrorist act in these past 30 years (my advice: don't read these chapters consecutively in one day), the overview is detailed, extensive and complete. Especially the chapters regarding to some of the most important counterterrorist operations (for example the raid on Entebbe, and the assault of the Iranian Embassy in London, as well as thirty years of activities in Northern Ireland) are very interesting and may give some new information to the relative layman. These chapters also puts the motives for the terrorists and their acts in a historical point of view, which provides a better comprehension of these acts. And to top it all, I've learned about counterterrorist units I didn't know existed (for example the American ISA or the French 29SA)....... and I have read quite a few books on the subject.

Beside chapters 1-3, the last minor downside in this book is the overextensive attention drawn to the invasion of Grenada by the US military in 1983. Although the counterterrorist units Delta Force and SEAL Team 6 were involved, this operation can not be considered a counterterrorist operation; the use of the word 'invasion' was deliberate. Even the author points this out after the story about the operation. These cost the book its fifth point, but just marginally so.

Again, for any one interested in the suject: you must have this book as a referncebook, but better to read it; once you have started in this very good read, it's difficult to close it..... and you just get motivated to know more. The world feels just a bitter saver just for knowing the contents of this book.

"One of the funniest and most unusual books of the year....Gross, educational, and unexpectedly sidesplitting."—Entertainment Weekly

Stiff is an oddly compelling, often hilarious exploration of the strange lives of our bodies postmortem. For two thousand years, cadavers—some willingly, some unwittingly—have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They've tested France's first guillotines, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure, from heart transplants to gender reassignment surgery, cadavers have been there alongside surgeons, making history in their quiet way.

In this fascinating, ennobling account, Mary Roach visits the good deeds of cadavers over the centuries—from the anatomy labs and human-sourced pharmacies of medieval and nineteenth-century Europe to a human decay research facility in Tennessee, to a plastic surgery practice lab, to a Scandinavian funeral directors' conference on human composting. In her droll, inimitable voice, Roach tells the engrossing story of our bodies when we are no longer with them.

3 out of 5 stars Should be called "Cruelty to Animals in the name of Science".......2007-10-15

The book is funny, except for the parts that made my stomach hurt about the things we do to animals. There is a lot in here about what has been done to animals, and what is still being done to them, it breaks my heart. I don't mind experimentation on dead animals but it should be illegal to do anything to a living animal, no matter who it benefits, and I can say that if an animal experiment would have saved my mother I (nor she) would have signed off on it. If it were to save my life I say no, we don't have the right. For the most part the book is funny and educational.

5 out of 5 stars Who Doesn't Like Dead Bodies?.......2007-09-26

Or who doesn't after reading this book? Roach is an amazing writer. She approaches this delicate subject with a good balance of humor, respect, and enthusiasm, and the reader can't help but be absorbed immediately.

Each chapter is spent discussing a possible "life" for a human cadaver. There are many expected courses, such as anatomy dissections and cremations, but also many unexpected courses, such as crash test dummy calibrator, ballistics assistant, compost, and ingredient for folk (and snake oil-type) remedies. If you are extremely squeamish, you may be well-advised to avoid this book, but chances are, if you are extremely squeamish, you're not interested anyway. Roach does a good job, however, of not immersing the reader in overly disgusting descriptions (at one point, she decides the word "maggot" is not very nice, so she refers to them instead as "haciendas"). She simply presents the facts as they are.

Roach has researched her subject extremely thoroughly and I came away with a treasure trove of fascinating facts (now I just have to figure out how to drop them into conversation!). One of the best aspects of the book is Roach's writing. She is hilarious, and I found myself laughing out loud in every chapter. This was an excellent, intriguing book, and I can't wait to read her next book, Spooks!

3 out of 5 stars Talent for Diplomacy.......2007-08-17

Ms. Roach has missed her true calling...I believe she could convince even John Bolton of her good intentions. The book was worth the $3.99 "used" price I paid. It's a light, humorous yet illuminating read if not somewhat contrived; in one section it is noted that victims' bodies aren't actually physically used in analyzing airplane crashes, thus their "lives" aren't so curious after all. Still they must be referred to as cadavers to agree with the central theme. This is a good nightstand book since you can well wait to see how it ends. R.I.P.

        5 out of 5 stars Really good!.......2007-08-07

In my anatomy class my teacher said i HAD to read this book. But don't read if someone you know has recently passed or if this kinda stuff bothers you. Take it lightly and humorous.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Read.......2007-07-30

Anything you never wanted to know about dead bodies you will read in this book. The author presents the information with a "Dry as a dry martini" sense of humor. Information that would typically not be discussed at the dinner table is what you will find in this book.

There is a variety of information, everything from how dead bodies are used to determine the best seats for airline crashes to the once considered disposal of the same.

One example is a gentleman in New York many moons ago that thought using human fat to keep the street lamps burning. He felt this was a good idea and a cost saving measure.

Another is how cremation came to be and various tried and failed techniques such as freeze drying bodies.

It is not a book of gore in the least, the reason it is not is the way the information is presented. This book is an all time favorite of mine. If you enjoy science, biology, and how things work you will enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars inspiring and lyrical.......2001-04-17

This is a lyrical and inspiring collection of true stories about people who made a difference. In each case, an individual or group of citizens, motivated by love of place, decided to take on big powers and seemingly overwhelming challenges. Bottom line: determined and creative citizens can win. The book is a pleasure to read and a powerful antidote to the cynical and defeatist attitude that it is too late and too difficult to defend our habitats, watersheds, rivers, and last wild places from degradation.
