Book Description
The Mosquito developed into one of the most versatile aircraft of World War 2, entering service with Fighter Command in early 1942. The 'Mossie' was soon defending raids on Britain's Cathedral cities and became an integral part of the country's night defences. Its airborne radar gave it the ability to 'see' the enemy at night, and its speed and devastating fire power made it the finest nightfighter deployed by any side during World War 2. This book examines the infamous Mosquito, the nightfighter that was used by many leading RAF, Commonwealth and American aces.

Tales of DeHavilland's Deadly Mosquito! .......2005-12-15
The exploits of the 50-odd aces who scored with the Mosquito fighter bomber are chronicled by author Andy Thomas in this Osprey Aircraft of the Aces volume.
Whether operating as a nightfighter, day intruder or Coastal Command strike aircraft, DeHavilland's elegant but lethal wooden wonder racked up kills over Ju 88s, Bf 110s, He 111s, V-1s, Ki-46s and assorted Axis aircraft in the ETO, Pacific and Mediterranean theaters. Thomas succintly covers these kills, scored by such Mossie aces as John Cunningham, Bob Kipp, Branse Burbridge, Roger Bannock, Bob Braham and others. Ten pages of color profiles by Chris Davey and dozens of photos of aircraft and crews complement the text.
As always, good value at a modest price. Recommended.
Will delight any avid scholar or WWII student.......2005-12-03
Andrew Thomas' Mosquito Aces Of World War II focuses on the all-wooden Mosquito aircraft, which entered service in early 1942 and was an effective fighter in Britain. It went on to counter the V-1 flying bombs in 1944 and made a name for itself with its ability to locate the enemy at night and develop hard blows with four cannons. Vintage black and white photos are packed throughout but it's the written history of the Mosquito and its 59 pilot fighters which is the meat of Mosquito Aces Of World War II, which will delight any avid scholar or WWII student.

The fifth edition has a different title.......2001-11-11
Note that the latest (1999, 5th) edition is called the "Hammond Atlas of World History," and is available at Amazon.com. There is no mention of "Time" anymore, causing possible confusion. It is superb.
Illuminating.......2001-07-05
In this day and age, where I find so many of us suffering from "historical amnesia", this book is an excellent reference to why our world is the way it is today. If you've ever wondered why that country's border is over here instead of over there, if you've ever wondered what all the fuss was about in what was Yugoslavia, if you've ever why some languages are so alike and why some languages sound like fusions of others, if you are not one of those people who believe the world came into creation after you were born, this book is for you.
The next time you see "Gladiator", "Titanic", or any period film, look at this book and see what the world looked like then. It will give you a tremendous perspective that goes beyond the scope of the films. Who were those barbarians that Maximus was fighting and where did all those other gladiator slaves come from ? It's all here.
Best of many I looked at........1999-08-11
I wouldn't rave forever like the dude from Providence about it. Some of the rivers are left unnamed on some of the maps as if they were not essentially formative during various times in history. With that caveat out of the way, I must have inspected 20 or 30 atlases seeking the most comprehensive historical atlas to help me through Gibbons' Decline and Fall... This is by far the best of the lot.
The key historical resource for every household.......1999-03-31
This book reveals history with an unusual magnetism by its ingenious use of graphic arts. It conveys exponentially greater amounts of information in a single page than even a whole normally written book can. With beautifully crafted, 3-D-appearing maps and inviting use of color, this atlas puts you in an astounding overview of world history not obtainable from normal history publications. I think this book is an absolute must for every household with growing children and a wonderful tool for adults, as well. It's also the penultimate jumping off point for anyone wishing to study history further. And, I must say, it's absolutely perfect for those who hate history! They won't hate it after seeing this book. To give you an indication of my reaction to this book, I bought it now because I'd seen it years ago in our public library at a time when I was out of money. I never forgot it. It has remained one of the priorities I swore I'd attend to as soon as I got back in the money and so, after waiting all those years, I've finally bought my own copy of it. Not many better ways to use that long-awaited money than getting a book like this. I am not a history expert so I cannot possibly have checked this book for historical content. But I don't think that's an issue with this book. I think you'll still know many times more about world history after you're done with this book than without it, even if historians found some text entry or ancient border to argue over. By the way, if my writing style sounds a bit commercial, I really am customer of amazon.com, not a plant by the publisher or something. It's just that I spent a number of years as a typesetter and so have picked up a writing style common to advertisements. That's what we typeset all day long! Sorry.

A Historical Atlas of the Jewish People, edited by Eli Barnavi, is one of those rare books that can literally make a reader gasp with delight and horror. It may even be the best one-volume history of Judaism in print. Beginning with "The Migrations of the Patriarchs," and continuing to the present day, the book's chapters include historical maps, timelines, illustrations and photographs, and narrative essays by leading historians (such as Moshe Idel) that help readers not only understand but visualize the movements of the Jewish people. The editors have chosen not to structure the story as leading inexorably to the Holocaust and the rise of Israel, although both events are covered in some detail. Instead, they have depicted the rich variety of lives established by the Diaspora in such far-flung places as China and England, and have been equally attentive to the joys and triumphs of Jews, both in everyday life and in national cultures, as to the considerable tragedies Jews have endured. The text of this book is smart and readable, but the real joy of the atlas is its illustrations, many of which are rarely seen, such as 20th-century artist Abel Pann's depiction of the creation of Adam, "He breathed into his nostrils the breath of life." It's the kind of image that reminds you that life really is a gift, and makes you savor it. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
The history of the Jews spans more than two millenia and encompasses most parts of the globe--an extraordinary saga which is set forth pictorially in this comprehensive, and richly illustrated and designed volume. With hundreds of brilliantly detailed maps, photographs, and drawings, and chronologies and commentaries by leading experts,
A Historical Atlas of the Jewish People is both an authoritative reference work and a sumptuous gift volume.
Customer Reviews:
This atlas succeeds beautifully.......2007-08-24
Few of the world's peoples can boast of a history as long and as varied as that of the Jews, or one encompassing such a range of achievements and tragedy. It spans more than three millennia and has touched most parts of the globe. This text sets forth this history graphically-in nearly a thousand detailed and accurate maps, brilliantly reproduced drawings, photographs, and paintings; plus chronologies and commentaries by dozens of leading experts. The result is a triumph of the bookmaking art-a comprehensive and dependable reference work.
Beyond the strictly historical, the Atlas also deals with many fascinating and important aspects of jewish culture-languages, literature, art, and music.
a great bar mitzvah gift.......2006-11-10
great information, nicely displayed. i wish i got one for my bar-mitzvah!
Excellent Overview of History and Culture.......2006-04-24
Professor Barnavi has done a great service both to Judaism and any students who are inclined to further their understanding of it. As a Christian proponent of this ancient faith upon which our own is based, I have found it an invaluable resource in my ecumenical studies involving history and development of Ancient and Modern Jewry and the vast knowledge accumulated over the thousands of years of its existance. It is a concise coverage of every age of its progression, along with a magnificent garnish of photographs and illustations which bring the entire process to life. I highly reccomend this book.
Heavily researched, beautifully depicted, fascinating and encyclopedic .......2006-01-20
This gorgeous coffee-table sized book would alone get my five stars for its detailed but clear maps and its breathtakingly diverse array of figures and illustrations depicting the major events of over 3,000 years of Jewish history. As it is, it provides detailed, well researched and very readable historical synopses of Jewish life throughout the world over this period, with each folio (two facing pages) a separate topic. Each folio includes the historical synopsis, usually a map, a series of other illustrations, including photographs, art, and other figures, and at the bottom of every page appears a time line highlighting important dates relevant to the topic. The topics range from the dawn of Judaism to present-day issues in Judaism, from Chinese Jews to the Jews of King Solomon's era, to Jewish farmers in Eastern Europe. You need to see this book in its entirety to believe it. If you ever wanted to an excellent and fascinating introduction to Jewish history, I don't think you can get better than this rare, colorful, scholarly and very engaging book. I'm so enthusiastic about it, I've bought it as a gift three times over.
An excellent, informative and beautiful work.......2005-09-19
This presentation of the history of the Jewish people through text, maps, charts, drawings, photographs, etc. is beautifully done. It is an excellent reference work for readers of all ages, a beautiful 'coffee table' book and a pleasure to use.
Customer Reviews:
simple, interesting, useful........2001-02-19
Although this book is currently out of print I wholeheartedly reccomend that you get it if you can find one. For a brief overview of world history one could not find a more useful document. The narrative is at times quite insightful for such a broad range text, and the graphics are invaluable if you ever need to explain these points to anyone (including yourself).

Fantastic visual aid for class!.......2007-10-07
I teach social studies and I've benefitted from this book as a visual aid for classes to appreciate more about ancient cultures.
Excellent historical atlas.......2004-05-05
This is a very well done historical atlas covering the time from man's earliest origins to modern times. It may be a reprint or different edition by Collins of the Times atlas of the same name. It covers the period from 2.5 million years ago to the present, but 3/4 of of the space is devoted to the period up to 150 A.D., and the remaining 1/4 text covers about the last 2000 years, so the emphasis is mainly on the ancient world, as the title suggests.
The articles focus on various topics and events during a particular period. For example, there are articles on "First Farmers of the Near East, 10,000-6,000 B.C.; Bronze Age Scandinavia, 2,000-500 B.C.; The Assyrian Empire, 950-600 B.C.; Egypt: The Pyramid Age, 3250-2000 B.C.; Han China, 200 B.C.-220 A.D.; Iron-Age Africa, 1000 B.C.-650 A.D.; The Aztecs and Their Ancestors, 900-1521 A.D.; Empires of the Andes, 800-1532 A.D.;" and many others. There is a good balance between articles on the east and the west, and even a couple of articles on what's known about the settlement of Polynesia and the Pacific Rim and the Maori settlement of New Zealand.
Other features include a color-coded timeline at the beginning of the book, an extensive index of almost 30 pages, and a glossary of archaeological terms. The text was written by an international team of scholars of dozens of specialists. There are numerous photos, maps, and illustrations of towns, villages, temple complexes, cities and so on down through the ages. Many are done as cutaway or aerial views for a better perspective and understanding.
One final feature of the book is a 25-page introductory section discussing how archaeologists used various methods, techniques of analysis, and interpretation in areas such as food, ritual, textiles, warfare, burials, settlement patterns, disease, and even underwater sites. This is a fine atlas to just browse or to read on whatever topics happen to interest you. Unfortunately, although not that old, the atlas appears to be out of print but is worth picking up used if you can find a copy.

Beware! It's too intriguing!!.......2004-12-02
If you buy this book, give yourself at least a week of free time because once you open it, you're a goner. Curiosity, that insidious questioner, will keep you turning the pages from age to age, region to region, topic to topic; the incredible pictorial representations of the various stages of history kindle a wonderment and an appreciation of all the archeologists and historians, not to mention the cartographers, who have contributed to an amazing analysis of the development of our world.

From the Theatre of the mind to.........REALITY!!!.......2005-06-16
Unlike a vast majority of sociologist and scientists who's theories for tackling Social/Global problems merely laps back into pure academia, David Peat is unique in that his theories you can actually apply. This comes about because his theories and whole approach to life within the community around him in Pari(Italy) are interwoven.I know this because his ideas have already caused ripples in my part of the world and have lead to some very interesting and tangible results. Now in his bio David shows us all so much more through his experiences, and go on the journey that helped change so many lives!
Claire Appleby UK (T.A.M.S.).
The Author writes:.......2005-06-09
"Pathways of Chance" was a joy to write. It was an opportunity to look back on my life, recall the people I had met and explore the ideas that had intrigued me. The book begins in wartime England, continues with my life as a student in Liverpool at the time of the Beatles, it then moves to Canada, to a meeting with the physicist and philosopher, David Bohm, an encounter with the Blackfoot and other Native Americans, to my on going interactions with artists and finally a move to a medieval hilltop village in Italy and the creation of the Pari Center for New Learning.
The book is not only about my personal encounters, it is also an exploration and explanation of the ideas I have spent my life exploring: - the mysteries of quantum reality, the paradox of "Schrödinger's Cat", David Bohm's proposal that an activity of information pervades the universe and that mind was present from the beginning. The book discusses how the languages we speak affect what we see and do. It touches on synchronicities (meaningful synchronicities) and the ideas of Carl Jung, it looks at the way our understanding of the cosmos may be encoded within our bodies, the relationship between art and science, the possibility of new forms of ethical action and my hopes for the future.
F. David Peat is the author of twenty books including "From Certainty to Uncertainty: The Story of Science and Ideas in the Twentieth Century", "Blackwinged Night: Creativity in Nature and Mind", "Blackfoot Physics", "Synchronicity: The Bridge between Matter and Mind", "Seven Life Lessons of Chaos" (with John Briggs) and "Science, Order and Creativity" with David Bohm
What people have said about this book.......2005-06-07
David Peat possesses one of the most incisive, expansive minds I've
ever known. His work has inspired a generation. His
autobiographical Pathways of Chance is a fascinating roadmap of
20th-century learning and a beacon to the future. No one perceives
connections or explains them with greater clarity than Peat. This
book is a moveable feast."
Larry Dossey, MD, The Extraordinary Healing Power of Ordinary Things, Healing Words and Reinventing Medicine.
Yes, physicists are strange beings and usually we fail to see just what
makes them tick or we can't imagine how anyone in their right mind would
ever become one. David Peat's new book provides an informative and honest
from-the-heart answer. This autobiographical look behind the scenes will
inform and engage you as you follow along Dr. Peat's journey through time
and meet all of the characters he found so interesting.
Fred Alan Wolf, Ph.D, The Yoga of Time Travel
Here we have that rare and wonderful thing: a scientist who can truly write. Peat's
autobiography is a daring fusion of the memoir and the cutting-edge essay. It makes a
rich and readable introduction, not only to Peat's own extraordinary life and his web of
20th-century connections, but also to some of the most tantalising ideas and figures of
the period, across both science and art. It is, at times, provocative; at other times,
poignantly human. Throughout, it is erudite and, above all, keenly concerned about how
we, as a species and a planet, move forward in the 21st-century. Peat's words are subtle
catalysts, sparking in us our own potential for transformation at all levels of life.
Pathways of Chance is a fascinating book, and an important one. Read it now.
Alison McLeod, novelist The Wave Theory of Angels
David Peat has one of the liveliest, most wide-ranging, depth probing minds I've ever encountered. Peat's thoughts on physics, philosophy and the arts, put forward in a genial, gracious writing style, reads like a can't-put-down mystery novel. Pathways of Chance will surely appeal to all who are interested in any of these subjects as well as those who like reading about his and other famous people's fascinating lives.
